Btw yall billboard confirmed Sabrina is eligible and Tate McRae isn’t
Link?

Carpenter has not been previously nominated for a Grammy, which generally results in disqualification from best new artist. And she has not been entered in the best new artist competition three times, which is an automatic disqualifier. Tate McRae has been entered three times (the last three years), so she is not eligible to be entered again. Carpenter has been entered twice – in 2017 and 2024, so she does not run afoul of that rule.
Interestingly enough they, for whatever reason, also say, “If the screening committee does accept Carpenter, they may be more apt to also allow two other “borderline” cases, Megan Moroney and Chappell Roan.” I have no idea how on earth Chappell is “borderline”, she is like, undoubtedly eligible, no borderline needed.

They did away with that rule a couple years ago I believe (EDIT: They did as per this article), Mitski literally submit last year on album number 7 or whatever.
ReplyCopy URLJune 26, 2024 at 10:32 am #1205871648Yep. These are the official and updated rules for the GRAMMY Awards.
ReplyCopy URLJune 26, 2024 at 10:45 am #1205871655So, Sabrina is officially in, until the Academy consider that her breakthrough record was Emails I Can’t Send. They should considering Feather was #1 in pop radio before Espresso release.
Also, what exactly is “breakthrough”? For pop artists what chart achievement would be enough? I mean, artists from genres as americana, folk, jazz, blues, gospel don’t even need to chart to be considered. But in Sabrina’s situation, #56 for Nonsense and #23 for Emails I Can’t Send was a breakthrough or not? These rules are stupid as fuck.

I also consider EICS her breakout personally and I hope the Academy does too tbh

June 26, 2024 at 11:10 am #1205871691The rules should be more restricted and easier. New artists with debut album or at least 5 songs during the eligiblity period. Period. Artists with two albums or more than 30 songs should be out of competition. And they should be allowed to submit only once.

We will only get this answer when her FYC banner gets published or when major submissions comes out.
Honestly, the Recording Academy won’t be deciding if Sabrina is eligible or not, they’ll be deciding who’s the next Best New Artist, Sabrina or someone else.
Considering her past albums, “nonsense”, The Eras Tour… I really don’t feel like this era is her “breakthrough” to public consciousness. She just got more popular and that’s it. It’s not the same case as Anitta, as an example, or even Måneskin.

Academy rules for BNA to be like:
Pop, Rap, R&B: go mainstream and have a hit on the charts.
Rock and Alternative: get a good review from critics and be considered one of the best albums of the year.
Country: go mainstream as well or become well known enough among your peers.
Non-commercial genres: “Hey, have you heard of this new musician? Let’s spread the word among the music community”.

June 26, 2024 at 11:17 am #1205871703They should just change the category name to Best Breakthrough Artist, all these rule changes are a whole mess every year to make someone elegible.

I kind of see the submission thing, I think 2-3 is fine, but I agree the album limit needs to come back. Imagine if fucking Mitski had been nominated last year on her SEVENTH album. Would’ve been a ridiculous looking nomination (even if deserved).

I think Chappell is going to put up a fight with Sabrina, I’m interested in the race now.
