Producers Robert Greenblatt and Neil Meron are developing Studio 54 The Musical, a new show with a book by Chad Hodge and music by the greatest disco artists of all-time. Directed and choreographed by Tony winner Sergio Trujillo, this Broadway-aimed musical is set to trace the astonishing ascent and sudden downfall of the most legendary club in nightlife history.

Would it be done at Studio 54? That would be apropos.

I was expecting an adaptation of the 1998 film 54.

Of course Studio 54 had quite a history before it became a disco, as a theater and radio/TV studio.

A quick look back at history will tell you disco doesn’t play on Broadway. Pass.

Obviously this would have to go into Studio 54 or don’t bother. I think it could be a lot of fun to take in the storied history of a place while you’re actually inside said place.

If they get a great catalog of hits and can sell it as a fun night out, it could enjoy a similar type of success as &Juliet. While some disco-themed ventures didn’t last (most recently Summer, though I think that was more about fatigue with bio-musicals), you also have Mamma Mia as the 9th longest running show in Broadway history.

Perhaps they could use Ottawan’s “D.I.S.C.O.” about a self-absorbed diva. I did enjoy Disaster!, which had some disco songs.
