July 9, 2024 at 9:04 am #1205881016Lois Smith not even getting nominated, while Margo Martindale won for appearing on screen for 1 minute will forever make my blood boil. Academy really isn’t serious most of the time.
ReplyCopy URLJuly 9, 2024 at 10:26 am #1205881108The way we could have had one of the best run of winners ever if Smith had won for The Americans, Tyson had won for How to Get Away with Murder, Rigg had won for GoT, Kikuchi had won for Westworld and Lapotaire had won for The Crown but Emmy voters were like nah.

July 9, 2024 at 6:31 pm #1205881431Yeah, season 4 of The Americans is not only the show’s best but it is one of the decades best overall, thrilling and enticing from beginning to end.
Should have won the Emmys over GOT season 6 but at least it broke through with ATL noms that year.

July 10, 2024 at 7:45 pm #1205882368Yeah, season 5 is the weakest one, the plots just don’t float like they should and the spy plot is nowhere near as good as the contamination plot of season 4.
I will say that it felt quite introspective and evolved its characters a lot so i can’t bring myself to dislike it, it’s still an 8/10 easily.

July 12, 2024 at 1:36 pm #1205883618I’m rewatching Game of Thrones after 5 years. I forgot how incredible the series really is. No TV shows comes close even 6 years after it ends.
ReplyCopy URLJuly 13, 2024 at 6:58 pm #1205884306Finally got on the Fargo train. Rewatched the movie then started with season 5. It was okay I guess? I was on board until about halfway through the season – I guess the fantasist element is there, suspension of disbelief etc but the hierarchy of law enforcement was too confusing and it felt like a yassified, MCU post-#Metoo redemption of the movie. Hamm was scary. Temple was good but her character didn’t make much sense. JJL was impeccable. Apparently season 5 was an anomaly in terms of structure.
Then moved on to binge season 1 – much better but also completely over the top. Looking forward to binging season 2 this week and I’ll stop the series there. Not quite the sensation I was expecting.

July 21, 2024 at 2:46 pm #1205892100Finished Desperate Housewives last week. Remarkable show that should have ended sooner (omg the repetitive storylines) but what a great cast what a great group of leading ladies.

July 21, 2024 at 9:14 pm #1205892341All of the shows I’ve recently finished from the estival season of last cycle:
The Bear: Season Two — Would have been an almost perfect season of TV had it not been for the inclusion of Claire. Still, the guest star episodes were indeed amazing, as were the guest stars’ performances, and Jeremy and Ebon were incredible. 10/10
I’m a Virgo — Wonderful. Still stylish, original, and cerebral, but without any of the nauseating hybrids like in STBY. Some absurdist flourishes still alienate, but for the most part, the surrealism is appreciated. Great performances all around, and the satire is exceptionally polished and focused. 9/10
Secret Invasion — Being unaccustomed to bad TV (due to my proclivity for awards contenders), I can’t say it’s among the worst of the cycle or all-time or anything, but it’s definitely one of the worst seasons of TV I’ve ever watched (which is more a reflection on the quality of that which I watch, as this wasn’t all bad, but still). That finale in particular was atrocious, and it ruined any semblance of enjoyment that could be gleaned from the unremarkable, if somewhat competent, remainder. 3/10
Silo: Season One — Amazing sets, terrific music, and great performances (besides Common). Atmospheric and visually striking. I have high prospects for its forthcoming season. 8/10
What We Do in the Shadows: Season Five — Been on a steady but gradual decline since S3; still enjoyable though. Rehashed storylines and plot regression hindered this season, but some novel and quite clever situations mitigated this, allowing it to still thrive intermittently. Actors and BTL departments still as strong as ever. 8/10
