Many of the best golf trips don't involve hotel rooms.

Getting a group of guys, gals or family members to stay in a nice house or condo on a golf vacation is great for the 'hang.' In these instances, everybody eats and drinks together and sleeps under the same roof - all fun things that help foster closer camaraderie.

We have tapped into Vrbo's extensive rental pool to come up with the best summer golf destinations where golf groups of all sizes should go for their next team trip. Here's how it works. Simply go to the Vrbo website and add the golf destination you're interested in to the search function. Once you hit Enter to search for selections, use the filters function to click on Golf Course under the location and/or activities tabs to pull up the best options near golf courses.

Some of America's best golf destinations offer dozens of home, cabin, villa and condo rentals perfect for your next adventure. Here are five of our favorite summer golf destinations home to hundreds of Vrbo rentals any golfer would love to visit:

  1. Traverse City, Mich.
The Bear at Grand Traverse Resort & Spa - hole 3
The narrow third green ends the first par 5 on The Bear at Grand Traverse Resort & Spa.

Perfect weather. Lakes. Beaches. Golf. Breweries. Wineries. A casino. There are lots of reasons to visit Traverse City for idyllic summers in northern Michigan. Vrbo offers hundreds of home rentals that could be ideal for golfers. I'd recommend going the cabin or cottage route, even if you're not on a golf course, just to experience the true beauty of Michigan's north woods. The golf options range from underappreciated local gems like Bahle Farms to highly regarded championship courses like The Bear at Grand Traverse Resort. This three-bedroom condo is just a five-minute walk from Grand Traverse's three courses.

  2. Lake Geneva, Wis.
    Grand Geneva Resort
A view of a green with water coming into play at Grand Geneva Resort

With Wisconsin's explosive growth in golf the past decade, Lake Geneva sometimes gets lost in the shuffle, but it's a fantastic golf outpost in its own regard. It's historically a summer playground for Chicagoans hoping to escape the city for the area's lakes and slower pace of life. Vrbo reports hundreds of golf homes are available for rent. I'd argue this is one of the Midwest's best options when it comes to value. The hard part would be choosing between the three courses at Geneva National, two at Grand Geneva Resort, plus Hawk's View, Lake Lawn Resort and Abbey Springs. This four-bedroom home sleeps 10 and includes your very own golf cart.

  3. Monterey Peninsula, Calif.
Bayonet course at Bayonet/Black Horse - hole 8
The par-5 eighth hole on the Bayonet Course at Bayonet/Black Horse plays downhill to a three-tiered green.

The good news is you don't have to stay at Pebble Beach to play Pebble Beach Golf Links. The bad news is a resort golf package remains the only way to guarantee advanced tee times. For golfers looking to save a little money by staying off property and rolling the dice on getting that perfect tee time, the Monterey Peninsula offers hundreds of golf-related options available to book through Vrbo. Even if you don't gain access to Pebble Beach, the Monterey Peninsula is still stocked with plenty of quality golf - Poppy Hills, Bayonet/Black Horse, Pacific Grove, Del Monte, Quail Lodge and the fact that Spyglass Hill and the Links at Spanish Bay rarely fully book up. This three-bedroom home inside Pebble Beach's gates in the Del Monte Forest sleeps eight.

  4. Lake Oconee, Ga.
Reynolds Lake Oconee - Great Waters
Great Waters at Reynolds Lake Oconee features an abundance of lakeside holes.

Although Reynolds Lake Oconee boasts a nice Ritz-Carlton hotel, there are dozens of rental homes available in the community and surrounding area available to golfers through Vrbo. Although it's hot in summer in Georgia, Reynolds offers that lake life that will cool you down after golf. Most of the resort's courses are open to the public if you stay within the community, the most celebrated being Great Waters by Jack Nicklaus. This three-bedroom condo, located within walking distance to trails, the Ritz-Carlton hotel and more, offers that access necessary to book tee times.

  5. San Diego
    Madeas 8th hole
The par-5 8th hole at Maderas Golf Club.

San Diego might be the only golf destination in America where there's comfortable weather to play in year-round. Summers are sublime and typically a break from the heat that many around the country are experiencing.

According to Vrbo, there are thousands of homes available for rent that are marked as golfer-friendly, meaning they are either on a course or near one. That number ranks it among the top five overall golf destinations in Vrbo.

Like everybody else, Vrbo golfers will have a hard time getting a tee time on Torrey Pines' famous North and South courses. The best choice might be Maderas, a fantastic Troon Golf facility in Poway. Golfers also can't go wrong with the foursome of courses in Carlsbad - the North and South at La Costa, Aviara Golf Club and the Crossings at Carlsbad. This four-bedroom house right on the beach in Oceanside near Carlsbad sleeps 10, so it could house two foursomes if necessary.
