Cher is asking a Los Angeles judge to make her conservator of her son’s estate, saying that Elijah Blue Allman is not currently capable of managing his own finances.
Allman is the son of late musician Gregg Allman, who died in 2017, and receives distributions from the G.A. Robbins Descendants Revocable Trust. According to a petition filed Tuesday, a temporary conservator is urgently needed because there are assets that must be distributed by Dec. 31 and he is “currently unable to manage his assets due to severe mental health and substance abuse issues.”

Conservatorship of an estate involves oversight of only financial and/or business matters — unlike a conservatorship of the person, which would also implicate medical and other personal decisions. It would be easy to conflate the two since the high-profile legal fight to end Britney Spears’ conservatorship involved both, but the petitions filed this week only relate to control over Elijah Blue Allman’s financial assets.
Cher is asking the court to appoint her temporary conservator of her son’s estate while the court considers whether a longer-term arrangement is appropriate and necessary. She is asking the court for authority to receive distributions owed to Allman from the trust, open an account in the name of the conservatorship estate on his behalf, and deposit the trust payments into that account.
“Elijah is entitled to regular distributions from a trust established by his father for his benefit, but given his ongoing mental health and substance abuse issues, Petitioner is concerned that any funds distributed to Elijah will immediately be spent on drugs, leaving Elijah with no assets to provide for himself, and putting Elijah’s life at risk,” writes Cher’s attorney Gabrielle Vidal of Loeb & Loeb in the petition. “[D]ue to Elijah’s struggles with severe mental health and addiction issues, detailed in the concurrently filed Confidential Supplemental Information, Elijah is currently unable to manage his finances and the distribution of funds directly to Elijah would not be in his best interests.”
Cher’s petition also states that she “has worked tirelessly to get Elijah into treatment and get him the help he needs” and “loves Elijah immensely and has always acted with his best interests in mind.”
The confidential supplement also details surrounding Allman’s divorce from his wife, Marieangela King. Cher believes that “until recently, Elijah and Angela were estranged and their tumultuous relationship has been marked by a cycle of drug addiction and mental health crises” and that King would not be an appropriate conservator of his estate because they’re in the midst of a divorce and she believes it “would result in the immediate loss or dissipation of Elijah’s assets for self-destructive purposes.”
Cher argues that Allman “is unable to form or express a preference concerning the appointment of a conservator for his estate” but notes that two of his siblings have agreed his mother should be appointed.
A hearing on the appointment of a temporary conservator is currently scheduled for Jan. 5.
