Disney’s D23 jamboree saw director James Cameron announce the title of his next Avatar film: Fire And Ash, and tease its “high emotional stakes.”
The sequel to 2009’s Avatar and 2022’s Avatar: The Way Of Water now has an official title – Avatar: Fire And Ash. The elemental-sounding subtitle was announced at Disney’s D23 event in California over the weekend, and James Cameron himself took a few hours out of his busy schedule to talk teasingly about his upcoming sci-fi fantasy.
“The characters are so alive, and it feels so real,” Cameron said, as quoted by Entertainment Weekly. “It’s also got very high emotional stakes – more than ever before. We’re going into really challenging territory for all the characters you know and love.”
Cameron then suggested that his fiery (and ashy) sequel might defy audience expectations somewhat. “The film is not what expect,” he said, “but it’s definitely what you want.

She’s got the best of both worlds: Miley Cyrus became a first-time Grammy winner this year, and now she’s been named a Disney Legend.
Lainey Wilson took the stage to introduce Cyrus, performing her own lively rendition of the “Hannah Montana” classic “The Best of Both Worlds.” After the song, she told the singer, “Miley, I want to thank you for never being afraid to step outside the box, always staying true to yourself, and most importantly, always kicking butt.”
“I’m gonna let everybody get on a little Disney Legend secret. I’m the one that tells you what you’re not supposed to know. And what I want to say, is that legends get scared, too. I’m scared right now, but the difference is we do it anyway, and all of you can do that every single day. It’s legendary to be afraid and do it anyway.

Oscar nominee Harrison Ford has been officially declared a legend — a Disney Legend that is.
On Sunday at the D23 Expo, Ford was honored with the hall-of-fame-style award from the Walt Disney Company. Because Lucasfilm is owned by Disney, Ford’s most famous roles — like Han Solo from “Star Wars” and the adventuring archaeologist Indiana Jones — cement him as one of the studio’s most iconic actors. Next February, Ford continues his legendary run at the studio by starring in Marvel Studios’ “Captain America: Brave New World” as Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, the U.S. President who memorably transforms into Red Hulk.
Bob Iger took the stage to present Ford with the first award of the night. “Before he was the captain of the Millennium Falcon or a globetrotting archeologist, Harrison Ford was, like so many, an aspiring actor who came to Hollywood to pursue their dreams,” Iger teased to thunderous applause at the Honda Center.

Before the groundbreaking, visually stunning space thriller “Gravity” won Alfonso Cuarón his first Academy Award for Best Director, it was just an idea the filmmaker and his son banged out hoping to scrounge up some money from studios. As reported by Deadline, this weekend, prior to receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award at Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland, Cuarón participated in the latest session of the masterclass series held there where he discussed the fallout from “Children of Men” that led to him making “Gravity,” as well as the technical and financial challenges he faced along the way.
“After ‘Children of Men,’ which was a complete commercial flop ($70 million worldwide on a $76 million budget), the appetite to work with me plummeted,” Cuarón said. “So I started writing and developing a film with my son. If money is the root of all evil, the following movies are the baddest of the bad. These money-making behemoths are the only ones in U.S. history to have crossed the $500 million mark at the domestic box office. Among them are all three of the most recent “Star Wars” episodes plus a whole collection of Marvel Cinematic Universe flicks.
There is exactly one original film in the line-up (“Avatar”) and only a single true story (“Titanic”), and both just happen to be directed by James Cameron. The rest of the films, as you’d expect, are reboots, remakes and sequels. One of most recent additions is Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” (2023), which is the most successful film to ever be directed by a woman.
Scroll through our gallery below for a closer look at the box office all time domestic top-grossing movies, not adjusted for inflation. Gallery updated August 2024.

James Cameron’s The Terminator is celebrating its fortieth anniversary this year. To mark the occasion, it’s the latest one of the director’s movies to get a radical 4K restoration done by Park Road Post, a post-production facility owned by Peter Jackson’s WingNut Films. This company is behind some of the most incredible, acclaimed restorations in recent memory, including Peter Jackson’s WWI documentary, They Shall Not Grow Old, and his The Beatles’ Get Back documentary.
But they’ve also been controversial, with James Cameron using them to significantly alter the looks of several of his films as they hit 4K. Notably, each film had been completely wiped of any film-like grain, making them look more like contemporary films than those made in the 1980s and 90s. This was especially noticeable in Aliens, which always sported a grainy look due to the high-speed film stock used. With the AI-assisted transfer,...

The early reactions for Alien: Romulus have been pretty strong, with some even deeming it the best entry in the franchise since James Cameron’s 1986 sequel. For the seventh installment in the franchise, Ridley Scott, who also helmed the last entry Alien: Covenant, has taken a step back, leaving the keys to the franchise to director Fede Álvarez.
With less than a week away from hitting the big screens, apart from the strong reactions from its early screenings, the film took a creepy yet engrossing approach to promote it.

Ridley Scott's "Alien" comes very close to perfection. The 1979 space horror uses reined-in suspense to set up its terrifying premise, and once the Facehugger graces our screens, the anxiety is ramped up and sustained until the last minute. The astonishing kernel of realism that "Alien" embraces might have been tough to replicate, but James Cameron cooked up the massively satisfying "Aliens," a worthy sequel that raises the stakes to the extreme. Cameron's sequel did not need to recapture the singular aura of the original as it went for a completely different vibe: huge set-pieces, exaggerated, cool-as-heck fight sequences, and a dramatic emotional thread that ties the spectacle together. The return of Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) feels momentous, as we get to witness more of her no-nonsense badassery intertwined with measured vulnerability.

Pandora is coming to Disneyland, but it won’t be a clone of the Walt Disney World Avatar land. Details are sparse, but it’s based on the second and upcoming third Avatar movies.
From the Disney Parks Blog…
As Disney Experiences Chairman Josh D’Amaro announced during Horizons: Disney Experiences Showcase at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, we’re venturing further into Pandora with a new destination at Disney California Adventure. While Pandora—The World of Avatar at Disney’s Animal Kingdom is based on Oscar-winner James Cameron’s “Avatar” film, this new destination draws inspiration from “Avatar: The Way of Water” and upcoming Avatar films to bring Pandora to life in a brand-new way.
No opening date has been announced, and neither have any attraction details. But here’s the released concept art, which does seem to show what seems to be a variation of the Na’vi River Journey.

The west coast is about to experience the world of James Cameron’s “Avatar.” A new land, themed around two of the three most successful movies of all time, is headed for Disney California Adventure.
Josh D’Amaro, the head of Disney Experiences, made the announcement at D23.
Imagineer Ali Rubinstein said about the new land, “We are taking our guests to a whole new location on Pandora. As you know, our land in Florida is set in a rainforest amongst the floating mountains, which feels like we’re stepping into the first ‘Avatar’ film. For our new destination we are inspired by the second movie and the upcoming ‘Fire and Ash’ and future ‘Avatar’ films. It will be at a scale and at a level that is worthy of these epic stories. An innovative new attraction will bring all the action, all the excitement of ‘Avatar’ in a new and thrilling way.

Celine Dion has denounced the use of her song “My Heart Will Go On” by Donald Trump during a president campaign rally in Montana on Friday night.
“In no way is this use authorized and Celine Dion does not endorse this or any similar use,” noted a statement released on Saturday.
Dion concluded her statement by questioning the wisdom of the song choice, given that it famously soundtracks James Cameron’s Titanic, a movie about a sinking ship. “…And really, That song?” she remarked. Perhaps Trump is resigned to his fate in a head-to-head matchup against Kamala Harris.
Last month, Dion her live comeback, performing Edith Piaf’s “L’Hymne à l’amour” at the opening ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympics. The singer has faced a series of health challenges in recent years due to her ongoing battle with stiff-person syndrome.

We love "Avatar," don't we folks? Writer/director James Cameron sure does — he's devoting a massive chunk of his career to making movies in that franchise, and while we can joke about long delays between movies all we want, Jimmy C is getting the last laugh because audiences seem to love these films. We've said it before and we'll say it again — never bet against Jim Cameron. While some people still scoff at the idea of the blockbuster filmmaker continuing to make "Avatar" movies, the fact remains that these movies become huge, huge hits. It's also worth noting that the films are only improving — not only was the technology for "Avatar: The Way of Water" superior to the first film, but the film itself was a huge step up in terms of emotional storytelling. In short, Cameron knows what he's doing. And he plans to show us even more stuff.

There are few film franchises where a simple title reveal is enough to excite audiences. Avengers, Star Wars and James Bond among them. And then there’s Avatar, which stands as a class as its own.
While the franchise doesn’t have many films to its name, the first Avatar (2009) stands as the highest grossing film of all time, and sequel Avatar: The Way of Water (2022) holds the record for the third highest grossing movie ever.
So when James Cameron announced that his third Avatar will be titled Avatar: Fire and Ash, it was enough to spark big applause at D23 Friday.

“Avatar 3” is officially called “Avatar: Fire and Ash.” James Cameron took a trip to Anaheim on Saturday to appear at Disney’s D23 convention and unveil the “Avatar 3” title to an audience of 15,000.
The sequel follows 2022’s “Avatar: The Way of Water,” the decade-in-the-making sequel to 2009’s “Avatar.” The second “Avatar” film grossed over $2.3 billion at the box office and ensured Cameron’s intention of filling out the franchise with four sequels will likely come to fruition.
“It’s so gratifying to feel that love for this world of Pandora and these characters that my team has been working on for over 18 years,” Cameron said at D23. “I can’t wait to show you what we’ve been working on for ‘Avatar 3.’ Every day when I’m reviewing new shots, it’s like Christmas morning. The characters are so alive and it all feels so real. As you’d expect,...

Avatar 3 is officially titled Avatar: Fire and Ash.
James Cameron and stars Zoe Saldaña and Sam Worthington took the stage Friday at D23 to show off concept art, not footage, with a look at the fire Na’Vi people.
“I came 7,000 miles from New Zealand for this,” Cameron told to the full house at the Honda Center before revealing the title in a snippet of footage. The filmmaker wasn’t ready to show off any clips.
“Holy crap, that’s a lot of people. Is this epic or what? Most epic event for most epic fans,” he continued.
“High emotional stakes,” is how the filmmaker described the threequel.
