Ángel Salazar, the actor best known as Al Pacino’s trusted sidekick “Chi Chi” in the 1983 film Scarface, has died. Salazar passed away in his sleep at a friend’s home in Brooklyn, NY Sunday, his rep and longtime friend Ann Wingsong confirmed to TMZ. He was 68.
A cause of death was not revealed, but Wingsong told the publication Salazar suffered from heart issues.
Salazar collected more than 50 acting credits over the course of his 45-year career, but it was his role as Chi Chi, Tony Montana’s (Pacino) devoted henchman in the Brian de Palma-directed Scarface for which he is best remembered. One of the more memorable scenes is the “chainsaw” scene where he saved Tony’s life. He starred alongside Michelle Pfeiffer, Steven Bauer, F. Murray Abraham, Robert Loggia and Mark Margolis in the film, written by Oliver Stone.

Have you ever wondered who helped transform this single film into a multi-billion-dollar juggernaut? Enter Ronald D. Moore and Brannon Braga, the writing wizards who mesmerized us with their 1996 hit movie Star Trek: First Contact. This film not only brought out the wildest imaginations of Star Trek aficionados but also caught the keen eye of Cruise himself.

Having achieved critical success with his 2023 release, May December, filmmaker Todd Haynes joined forces with Joker star Joaquin Phoenix for an untitled gay romance. Even though the Oscar-winner was heavily involved with its screenplay alongside Haynes, just five days before the production was set to commence, Phoenix abruptly pulled out.
As for the aftermath, the whole thing has been a nightmare per producer Christine Vachon, who defended her decision to cast Phoenix, a heterosexual person, in the shoes of a gay character.
Producer Christine Vachon Addressed Joaquin Phoenix’s Abrupt Exit Joaquin Phoenix in a still from Joker: Folie á Deux | Warner Bros.
While it isn’t exactly clear why Joaquin Phoenix chose to exit the film mere days before the production began, and per Variety, the actor reportedly got “cold feet”. Reflecting on the whole fiasco, producer Christine Vachon, who deemed (via People) the whole situation “a nightmare”, defended casting Phoenix in the role.

Visual storytelling is necessarily a collaborative endeavor, which means there are multiple points where everything can go wrong. The good news is we can now eliminate some of the most unpredictable variables of the process — the onscreen talent. Mainstream movies and television are increasingly hopping aboard the deepfake bandwagon, so get ready for a creep-ass cinematic future.
5 The Book of Boba Fett
The CGI de-aging of Mark Hamill on The Mandalorian was slammed into space, so the producers of The Book of Boba Fett decided they could make a better Mark Hamill than Mark Hamill. He just stayed home while they hired some guy off YouTube to deepfake young Luke Skywalker without even the benefit of Hamill’s iconic voice. Was it cheaper? Almost certainly. Was it also worse? Oh, yes.

Actors Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson are the latest victims in a slew of robberies in Hollywood.
Law enforcement said the burglars attempted to break into the house a few weeks ago while the actors were out of town. They smashed the glass to get in, triggering the home’s security system. It is unclear if anything was stolen.
Police say the Forrest Gump actor did not appear to be targeted in the break-in. No suspects have been arrests and the investigation is ongoing.

The official announcement at D23 of Pixar’s Andrew Stanton writing and directing “Toy Story 5” is a big deal. Stanton has co-written the previous four “Toy Story” films, receiving Oscar nominations for the original and the third film.
But now as a director, he finally gets to be in total control of the franchise he helped establish. So if there was going to be a fifth “Toy Story,” he’s the perfect director for a couple of reasons.
The first is that, since “Wall-e,” Stanton has been fascinated with science fiction and the dangers of ubiquitous technology. The story for the fifth “Toy Story” allows him to double down on that fascination.
“Let’s be real,” Stanton told the packed Honda Center in Anaheim on Friday night. “Toys have some serious competition these days with phones, tablets, and technology everywhere. So, this time around, it’s toys vs. tech.

Paul Greengrass may no longer be a journalist, but he has successfully brought a journalistic style to both action films and historical dramas over his career. The filmmaker is best known for his hand-held, cinéma vérité style where the camera moves like a cameraman embedded in the scene, struggling to capture real events. His style is often imitated, though few are able to match the subtly precise way that Greengrass constructs his sequences through quick cutting and frenetic camerawork. Despite being famous for a specific filmmaking technique, Greengrass’ filmography is still quite diverse, which should be apparent in the gallery below.
He began his career working for the audacious British current affairs program “World in Action.” He transitioned to fiction filmmaking with a series of TV movies based on historical events. His breakout hit was the historical drama “Bloody Sunday,” chronicling the 1972 Bloody Sunday shootings. Greengrass was then hired to...

Hide your discarded pizza boxes — Unky Herb is coming back to Springfield.
Back in February 1991, Danny DeVito showed up to The Simpsons, and, as he loves to do, delivered arguably the show’s greatest all-time guest performance. In “Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?” DeVito played Homer’s wealthy and magnanimous automobile magnate half-brother Herb Powell who was mercifully unencumbered by the stupefying “Simpsons gene” — that is, until he let his “everyman” brother design a car that destroyed Herb’s career and his fortune faster than you could honk “La Cucaracha.”
Late last month, The Simpsons producers announced that the upcoming premiere of Season 36, which will air on Fox this September 29th, will feature a star-studded list of celebrity guests that includes former superstar Simpsons writer Conan O’Brien, national Dad Tom Hanks and DeVito, who has lent his voice acting talents to the role of Herb in three Simpsons episodes in the last 33 years.

Watch our interviews with all five of these Emmy nominees below by clicking each name.
“Masters of the Air” follows the men of the 100th Bomb Group, also known as “The Bloody Hundredth,” as they conduct perilous bombing raids over Nazi Germany and grapple with the frigid conditions, lack of oxygen and sheer terror of combat conducted at 25,000 feet in the air. From Caligula to Forrest Gump and My Neighbour Totoro, rereleases are hitting the big screen once again – and are proving lucrative at the box office
Glance at the lineup of films at your local cinema and you might briefly believe you have passed through a time portal. Stirring athletics biopic Chariots of Fire sits cheek by jowl with schmaltzy Tom Hanks fable Forrest Gump; magical Japanese animation My Neighbour Totoro finds houseroom next to melancholic Hungarian art film Werckmeister Harmonies; 1990s action yarn The Mummy galumphs alongside Francis Ford Coppola’s paranoid 70s classic The Conversation. The surge of reissues and restorations appears unstoppable. This week sees the release of a new edit of the notoriously sleazy Caligula, first released in 1979, with the Tex-Mex crime story Lone Star (1996) and Coraline (2009) to follow shortly.

Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg joined forces with writer Erik Jendresen to adapt Stephen E. Ambrose’s book, Band of Brothers, into a miniseries. The show told the story of the paratroopers of Easy Company, 2nd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division. Out of the 10 episodes that began with their training and followed their horrific experience in World War II, Jendresen has a clear favorite.

Jendresen and Hanks met with Major Richard “Dick” Winters, who contributed largely to Ambrose’s book. Major Winters was the commanding officer of the company and he was initially silent on his experiences. According to Jendresen, one of the episodes helped all the soldiers who were silent about their experiences to open up to their close ones.

“Saturday Night Live” has already booked Maya Rudolph to return as Vice President Kamala Harris, but who should play her newly named running mate, Midwestern nice guy and governor of Minnesota Tim Walz?
The most apparently obvious candidate — similarly white-haired comedian Steve Martin — has, sadly, already turned down the gig as of Wednesday. But fear not, we’ve got plenty of other suggestions for Lorne Michaels to consider, including A-listers like Tom Hanks, Brad Pitt and John Goodman.

The 25th anniversary of Deep Blue Sea is generally not seen as a significant cultural event. In the grand context of a world spinning wildly off its axis, finding time to remember that movie where scientists use shark brains to cure Alzheimer’s can be difficult.
Yet Deep Blue Sea deserves to be remembered. Not for the events of the film itself—though it is, remarkably, still one of the best shark movies ever made—but rather for the incredible original rap song that plays over its end credits, “Deepest Bluest (Shark’s Fin).” In that rousing ballad, rapper and Deep Blue Sea co-star LL Cool J delivers what could best be described as a shark’s diss track to the rest of the world sung from the shark’s perspective. Best remembered for the lyric, “Deepest, bluest, my hat is like a shark’s fin,” it occasionally makes the...

Few filmmakers have been able to do what Steven Spielberg has been doing all these years. With films like Jaws, Jurassic Park, Schindler’s List, and more, the director has proven that there really aren’t any limits to what can be achieved in the film industry. Once again, in 2017, Steven Spielberg showed the world just what he’s made of thanks to the political thriller, The Post.
Steven Spielberg’s The Post (2017) | 20th Century Fox
Based on a true event, The Post stars two of Hollywood’s greatest actors, Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep. When Steven Spielberg was first handed the script for the film, he knew that it couldn’t wait and decided to get right down to business. Why? Well, simply because of the story’s relevance to what was going on in the world at that moment, aka Donald Trump’s first run as President.

Sony Pictures has moved up the release of TriStar’s “Here,” the upcoming drama that reunites “Forrest Gump” trio Robert Zemeckis, Tom Hanks and Robin Wright, to Nov. 1.
Also starring Michelle Dockery and Paul Bettany, the film focuses on a single spot of land from the creation of Earth to the present day, eventually focusing on a couple that gets married and moves into the house that is built on that land.
“Here” was previously set for release on Nov. 15, but now has some space from two major tentpole films: Universal’s “Wicked” and Paramount’s “Gladiator II.”
The movie will now be released alongside a pair of specialty titles with Oscar potential: Focus Features’ Vatican thriller “Conclave” starring Ralph Fiennes and Stanley Tucci, and Searchlight’s Sundance acquisition “A Real Pain” starring Jesse Eisenberg and Kieran Culkin. Unlike those films, “Here” will be a wide release.

Updated with new release date: Sony said Tuesday that it will now open Miramax’s Here, the reteam of Forrest Gump filmmaker Robert Zemeckis and its stars Tom Hanks and Robin Wright, on November 1. It’s the only studio theatrical release going wide on that day after Samuel Goldwyn’s Liam Neeson title Absolution, Viva’s animated Hitpig and the George Huang-directed Luke Evans movie Weekend in Taipei. There’s been no buzz that Here will land a place at the fall’s film festival troika of Toronto, Venice and Telluride.
Previously, June 21: Sony said Friday that its new film Here, reuniting the director, writer, and stars of the classic Forrest Gump, will open wide via TriStar Pictures on November 15.
Previously, the film had been scheduled for an exclusive run in Los Angeles in New York on that date, with a limited and wide release to follow on November 22 and November 27, respectively.

Based on Donald L. Miller’s book of the same name, and scripted by John Orloff, “Masters of the Air” follows the men of the 100th Bomb Group (the “Bloody Hundredth”) as they conduct perilous bombing raids over Nazi Germany and grapple with the frigid conditions, lack of oxygen and sheer terror of combat conducted at 25,000 feet in the air. Portraying the psychological and emotional price paid by these young men as they helped destroy the horror of Hitler’s Third Reich, is at the heart of “Masters of the Air.” Some were shot down and captured; some were wounded or killed. And some were lucky enough to make it home. Regardless of individual fate, a toll was exacted on them all.

The Season 5 premiere of “9-1-1: Lone Star” promises an epic disaster to kick off the Fox series’ return: A train full of toxic chemicals crashes, leading to a “poison cloud of death,” as dispatch tells the rattled firefighters of the 126 in the trailer that Fox shared on Monday.
Captain Owen Strand (Rob Lowe), channels Tom Hanks in “Apollo 13,” when he says, “Dispatch, we have a problem,” after seeing that passengers who survived the crash are bleeding from their eyes and mouth.
The multi-episode arc puts both Strand’s firefighters and Captain Tommy Vega’s paramedics team in danger. (Watch the trailer in the video above.)
Meanwhile, Judd (Jim Parrack) resigns to take care of his recently handicapped son Wyatt (Jackson Pace). As was previously reported, Sierra McClain, the actress who has played Judd’s wife for four seasons, will not be returning for Season 5. Her departure has sparked speculation...

Jimmy Kimmel, the host of the two most recent Academy Awards ceremonies and two others before them (2017 and 2018), and John Mulaney, the host of the most recent Academy Governors Awards ceremony, have withdrawn themselves from consideration for the job of emceeing the 97th Oscars on March 2, 2025. That, of course, begs the question: who will the Academy, its Oscars telecast producers (likely to be the same team that oversaw the well-received 2024 ceremony, minus Kimmel’s producer/wife Molly McNearney) and its broadcasting partner ABC land for the gig — if anyone? Tom Hanks grew to know Denzel Washington when they both collaborated in the feature Philadelphia. And according to Washington himself, Hanks had a special quality that he only found in one other actor decades later.

Hanks has always been regarded as one of the kindest and most genuine actors in Hollywood. It was a reputation that Washington agreed with when he first got together with Hanks. In 2016, Washington saw himself working alongside a large ensemble cast in the western The Magnificent Seven. It was the first time he teamed up with Marvel star Chris Pratt, who exuded the same qualities that Hanks did years prior.

As this year heralds the 30th anniversary of the much-loved film Forrest Gump, we can’t help but reminisce about the box of chocolates that is life, so eloquently depicted in this timeless cinematic gem. Showered with six Oscars, including the trifecta of Best Picture, Best Actor, and Best Director, Robert Zemeckis’ 1994 masterpiece threaded the tale of a sweet but simple-minded everyman, portrayed to perfection by Tom Hanks.

But this is not all. The film earned some contrasting opinions, including those from Groom and other critics, like Taylor Sheridan.

Last year, there was a massive uproar when “Barbie” filmmaker Greta Gerwig was left off of the Best Director lineup at the Oscars, despite the blockbuster movie reaping eight total nominations including Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay (for Gerwig and Noah Baumbach). “Anatomy of a Fall” helmer Justine Triet, who won the prize for Best Original Screenplay, did wind up earning a directing bid, and it was only the ninth such time in Academy Awards history for a woman. So will the upcoming 2025 Oscars include any female Best Director nominees? Let’s consult Gold Derby’s Oscar Experts.
According to the rankings of our pundits from major media outlets, the five most likely directing nominees will all be men: Steve McQueen for “Blitz” (Apple TV+), Sean Baker for “Anora” (Neon), Denis Villeneuve for “Dune: Part Two” (Warner Bros.), Edward Berger for “Conclave” (Focus Features), and Ridley Scott for “Gladiator II...

The seed for In & Out, according to screenwriter Paul Rudnick, was planted during the 1994 Academy Awards when Tom Hanks, accepting the best actor Oscar for Philadelphia, thanked his high school drama teacher, who was gay. What if, Rudnick wondered, that teacher lived in a small Indiana town and wasn’t gay—or, more to the point, what if that teacher was gay and just didn’t realize it yet?
The comic tone of Frank Oz’s film recalls the 1993 episode of Seinfeld titled “The Outing,” in which Jerry is falsely labeled as gay in a college newspaper. That episode’s refrain, “Not that there’s anything wrong with that”—offered by the central characters as both a badge of liberal awareness and a declaration of their skittishness concerning the subject of gay sex—works as a comedic complement to the prestige orientation of something like Philadelphia. After all, the subject...

The most recent ceremony in 2023 featured a tribute to Eddie Murphy. Actress Jane Fonda received the DeMille two years before.

The first few minutes of Harold and the Purple Crayon feature charming hand-drawn animation very much in the style of the 1955 classic children’s picture book by Crockett Johnson, making it easy to see why it’s still popular nearly 70 years later. In the original story, Harold was just a young boy, creating a wonderful world for himself thanks to his magic crayon. Unfortunately, in the new big screen, live-action/animated adaptation directed by Carlos Saldanha (Ferdinand, Rio, Ice Age), he’s all grown up. And despite the appeal of star Zachary Levi, it’s unlikely the film will have the same staying power.
There have been numerous attempts at a film version of the book dating back years and involving such major talents as Maurice Sendak, David O. Russell, Will Smith, Steven Spielberg and Spike Jonze (what a movie he would have likely made!). Even this version has been delayed more than once,...

Tom Hanks’ versatile talent has seen him play many diverse and challenging characters across many decades. Through these varied roles, the Oscar winner has portrayed protagonists who have mostly been some of the most upstanding and inspiring people with towering virtues and qualities.

2002’s Road to Perdition was a shift from this image for Hanks. The film based on Max Allan Collins‘ graphic novel of the same name, saw the celebrity channel negative shades as a mob enforcer and a father who shares a complex relationship with his son. The Forrest Gump star was well aware though, that it wasn’t all that easy for fans to forget his quintessential ‘nice guy’ image.

When The Simpsons returns to television on September 29th, the series will kick off its 36th season with a premiere centered around Bart Simpson’s birthday party, a star-studded event that will feature honored celebrity guests such as Conan O’Brien, Tom Hanks and John Cena. But the best birthday present of all would be the presence of a long-absent Unky.
Right now, The Simpsons and its staff are staring down the barrel of the last season on the show’s current contract with Fox. Though many Simpsons mainstays have maintained that yet another renewal for the longest running primetime series in American television history is an inevitability, the show’s producers are taking no chances on the series’ continued success as they make some splashy moves to ensure solid viewership upon their return this fall. At San Diego Comic-Con this past weekend, a handful of Simpsons executives teased the guest...

When one talks of artistic collaborations in Hollywood, the duos of Chad Stahelski and Keanu Reeves, and Christopher Nolan and Cillian Murphy come to mind immediately for their successful partnerships together. Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks are not far behind, having shared a memorable association in 5 films and being co-producers on 2 miniseries, Band of Brothers and its spin-off show, The Pacific.

The director who was impressed with the idea, unfortunately could not commit to it owing to a busy schedule of films under his belt.
