The Glen Powell business is booming in Hollywood, and if “Twisters” does well in theaters this weekend, expect the actor’s ascension to superstardom to happen even more swiftly than it already is. “Twisters” is Powell’s last big release of 2024, but he has Ari Aster‘s “Huntington“ and Edgar Wright‘s “The Running Man” remake on the way, too.

Viggo Mortensen is slamming Amazon for the “shameful” release of 2022 film “Thirteen Lives.”
Directed by Ron Howard and based on the true story of a Thai cave rescue, “Thirteen Lives” received a limited theatrical release plus a Prime Video debut less than a week later. Mortensen is now revealing that prior to the MGM-Amazon buyout, the film was set to have a full, wide theatrical release. According to the actor, that deal was not honored by Amazon.
“They were going to put it out worldwide in many, many, many thousands of theaters,” Mortensen told Vanity Fair. “Then Amazon bought MGM, initially promised to respect the deal that MGM had made with Ron Howard, and then they went back on that. Basically you saw that movie for a week in Chicago, New York and L.A., London, and that was that. Then you had the streaming, which I thought was really sad.

"Backdraft" is a deluxe dad movie. It's a dad movie with daddy issues wherein the un-dad protagonist attains maximum manhood by becoming his dad. That all these dads and potential dads are not just firemen, but Chicago firemen blasts this dad movie into the Daddysphere.
Now that a whole generation of moviegoers that grew up watching "Backdraft" with their dads are themself dads, it's time for Hollywood to tempt dad movie fate with a dad movie remake. Why are dad movie remakes such a perilous undertaking? Because dad movies only become dad movies by becoming couch worthy. This takes years of rewatches on casual Saturday and Sunday afternoons. And there are dad movie tiers. Some dad movies are bad movies that contain enough dad-friendly elements to justify the sit in a chore-less situation. Others are good enough to make a little nagging worth it.

Have you got any salt handy? You may want to take a pinch of it for this one. Following recent star turns in Top Gun: Maverick, Anyone But You, Richard Linklater's Hit Man, and buzzy summer disaster movie blockbuster Twisters, it would be fair to say that Glen Powell is very hot right now. But he could be about to get hotter — quite literally. In a recent interview with CNBC posted to the broadcaster's YouTube channel, Imagine Entertainment co-founder Brian Grazer said not once, but twice, that a remake of Ron Howard's 1991 firefighting classic Backdraft is in the works, with none other than Powell set to star. Check out the interview clip below (feel free to scrub through to 1:20 and 2:20);
Now, as we say, some salt-pinching is required at this stage because neither Powell nor original Backdraft director Howard are on the record as saying this film is happening just yet.

Viggo Mortensen has made his displeasure known regarding Amazon’s handling of Ron Howard’s film Thirteen Lives. Speaking recently to Vanity Fair, Mortensen voiced concerns over the streaming giant’s treatment of the critically acclaimed film, calling it appalling and shameful. Hollywood Franchises Under Fire The star, best known for his iconic role as Aragorn in Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy, didn’t hold back in criticizing blockbuster franchises. He said Hollywood franchises are not usually that good and are often kind of predictable. This sentiment comes from a seasoned actor who chooses roles based not on the budgets or...

Actor and director Viggo Mortensen has publicly decried the studio’s handling of Ron Howard’s 2022 drama, Thirteen Lives.
Viggo Mortensen isn’t a fan of Amazon Studios’ handling of the 2022 drama, Thirteen Lives, and the actor and filmmaker has some rather choice words for the company. Mortensen co-starred in the Ron Howard film which dramatised the real-life rescue of thirteen young people trapped in a Thai cave as diving experts risked their lives to save them.
The film was originally bought by MGM and set for a wide theatrical release until the studio was purchased by Amazon. At that point, Thirteen Lives was instead switched largely to a streaming-only debut.
A couple of years on, Mortensen has thoughts on the matter, and he claims that Amazon broke promises to Ron Howard and his collaborators. He said to Vanity Fair, “Amazon bought MGM, initially promised to respect the deal that...

J.D. Vance, formally accepting the Republican nomination for vice president tonight, gave a speech that aimed over key swing states of Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania, as he shared heartwarming and sometimes amusing biographical details of his life.
But in his first address on the national stage, he was surprisingly low key, less fiery in delivery than much of his social media posts would suggest. It was the type of speech that Donald Trump, who was watching from the VIP box, might have even labeled “low energy,” at least compared to the speech delivered earlier in the hour by his son, Donald Trump Jr.
“To the people of Middletown, Ohio and all of the forgotten communities in Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Ohio and every corner of our nation, I promise you this: I will be a vice president who never forgets where he came from,” Vance said.

Some of the entertainment industry’s top filmmakers will go up against each other at the 76th Emmy Awards.

The Disney+ film about the Muppets creator is nominated for Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Special, and Howard scored a nomination for directing the film. See the full list of Emmy documentary nominees below.
Howard is far from the only prominent name to earn recognition in the documentary categories. Viggo Mortensen called out Amazon in an interview with Vanity Fair magazine for the company’s decision to scrap an extensive theatrical release for Ron Howard’s 2022 movie “Thirteen Lives” and give it a global streaming launch instead. Mortensen, who starred in the well-reviewed Thai cave rescue thriller opposite Colin Farrell and Joel Edgerton, said the film was a “really good movie” that MGM intended to give a full blown theatrical release to after “they did their test screenings for that movie and got the highest scores in the history of that studio.”
“They were going to put it out worldwide in many, many, many thousands of theaters,” Mortensen said. “Then Amazon bought MGM, initially promised to respect the deal that MGM had made with Ron Howard, and then they went back on that. J.D. Vance's story is very inspiring. As his 2016 memoir, "Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and a Culture in Crisis," related, he was raised in abject poverty in the suburbs of Ohio by his Kentucky-born grandparents, and his mother wrestled with addiction all her life. He managed to rise out of poverty, serve a stint in the military, and was eventually accepted into Ohio State University. He eventually achieved a degree from Yale and now, at age 39, Vance has realized his ultimate goal: to be a whiny, sycophantic bootlicker for a clownish would-be fascist. In 2024, Vance will serve as the running mate of Donald Trump, and the pair hope to enact Project 2025, a piddling wish-list of evil, theocratic dictates that aims to rob women, the poor, and queer people of rights and turn the president into an Emperor. We've come a long way, baby.

Ron Howard is reportedly developing a sequel to the 1991 hit film Backdraft, and Glen Powell is said to be considering joining up.
Here’s an interesting story which suggests that Backdraft, the 1991 firefighting drama may be getting a sequel. Well, another sequel that is given that Universal Pictures Home Entertainment released a direct-to-video follow-up in 2019. Given that Ron Howard’s production company are involved this time though, we’d imagine that should this come to fruition, this one would be a proper bells and whistles sequel with a sizeable budget and lots of movie stars.
One movie star whose name was almost certain to pop up was that of Glen Powell.
He’s the man of the moment right now and he’s not averse to putting in a turn in legacy follow-ups either. Powell is currently appearing in Twisters, a loose follow-up to the 1996 film, Twister. He’s also...

On day one of the Republican National Convention, Donald Trump tapped Jd Vance to be his vice-presidential running mate. And with that announcement, a four-year-old movie — the Ron Howard-directed adaptation of Vance’s memoir, “Hillbilly Elegy” — leapt almost instantly into the Netflix top 10.
For many Americans, that chicken-fried Bildungsroman will be their introduction to a veep with less than two years’ government experience. In both the book and its middling Netflix adaptation, Vance portrayed himself as an Appalachian kid from poor stock who’d escaped the Rust Belt for an Ivy League education and a lucrative career.
It was that dimension of Vance’s narrative that clearly attracted director Ron Howard and producer Brian Grazer — both self-avowed liberals, who may have created a monster by legitimizing his origin story, much as “The Apprentice” producer Mark Burnett did by giving Trump a reality TV spotlight back in 2004.

Whatever impact Ohio Senator J.D. Vance has on the election as Donald Trump’s vice presidential candidate, Netflix is already seeing a return. “Hillbilly Elegy,” Ron Howard’s 2020 film adaptation of Vance’s best-selling memoir about growing up in Appalachia, was #6 on Netflix’s top 10 most-watched movie chart as of Tuesday, July 16. This comes the day after Trump announced Vance as his pick, and three days after the assassination attempt on the Republican presidential candidate.
It’s rare for an original Netflix feature film to return to its viewing charts after initial release. Higher-profile, awards-oriented titles like “Hillbilly Elegy” often have brief initial runs, then disappear. (An exception is when the original returns after a sequel.)

After Donald Trump’s announcement of J.D. Vance as his running mate on Monday, viewership of “Hillbilly Elegy” increased by 1,179% compared to the day before, per Luminate.
The 2020 Netflix film, based on Vance’s 2016 memoir of the same name, was watched for 19.2 million minutes on Monday — a huge leap from the 1.5 million minutes the film was watched on Sunday, by which point Vance’s VP bid was already a sweeping rumor.
Monday’s total comes out to an estimated 163,836 views. This is calculated by dividing the number of minutes watched by the film’s 117-minute runtime, which means, for example, that watching half of the movie would constitute half of a view, etc.
Upon its release in 2016, Vance’s memoir was widely discussed as giving context for why working class white voters may have been attracted to Trump. The film debuted on Netflix in November 2020 after a limited theatrical run and received negative reviews.

Interest in J.D. Vance’s Hillbilly Elegy is soaring after the author and senator was selected to be former President Trump’s vice presidential nominee.
The 2016 memoir from Vance became the No. 1 and No. 2 best-selling books on Amazon on Tuesday, representing both the paperback and hardcover editions of the book. Making the rise more notable: Tuesday was also Amazon’s Prime Day, which it characterizes as one of the biggest shopping days of the year.
And the 2020 film adaptation, which was directed by Ron Howard and starred Amy Adams and Glenn Close, is also surging on Netflix.
Four years after it was released on the streaming platform, the film returned to the streamer’s top 10 list of U.S. movies Tuesday, where it appeared at the No. 6 spot.
Vance, 39, was selected by Trump on Monday to be his vice presidential nominee, ending a bakeoff that also included North Dakota Gov.

Audiences are revisiting the film adaptation of J.D. Vance’s memoir Hillbilly Elegy after the author was named as former President Donald Trump’s running mate in the upcoming presidential election.
Viewership of the film on Netflix grew 1,180% to 19.2M minutes watched on July 15, according to data from Luminate. Compare that to the 1.5M minutes watched the day prior.
The film has a runtime just under two hours, so Monday’s data equates to roughly 164,000 viewers — much more than the 9,000 or so that tuned in on Sunday. Pedro Almodóvar’s first English-language feature film, “The Room Next Door” — starring Oscar winners Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton — will likely launch from the Venice Film Festival, which is putting the final touches on a stellar lineup ahead of its official announcement next week.
“Room Next Door” is Almodóvar’s follow-up to 2021’s “Parallel Mothers,” which bowed at Venice and scored the fest’s best actress Volpi Cup for Penelope Cruz’s performance. Almodóvar’s latest is also believed to be in competition at the festival, according to several sources.
Almodóvar’s New England-set film is “about a very imperfect mother and her resentful daughter, who live separate lives because of a profound misunderstanding,” as the director has put it.
“Room Next Door,” which is produced by Almodóvar’s El Deseo banner, is set to hit theaters this year via Sony Pictures Classics in the U.S., Middle East and India,...

Nutcrackers, David Gordon Green’s heartfelt comedy starring Ben Stiller, is set to open the 2024 Toronto Film Festival on Sept. 5.
The TIFF opener — marking Stiller’s first starring role in a movie since Mike White’s Brad’s Status and Noah Baumbach’s Netflix family drama The Meyerowitz Stories in 2017 — will have a world premiere at Roy Thomson Hall, which is filled with ordinary moviegoers (and not only industry people as in Cannes and Venice).
Written by Leland Douglas, Nutcrackers follows Mike (Stiller), a straight-laced workaholic who has to travel to rural Ohio to care for his four nephews after their parents die in a car accident. After weeks of farm-life mayhem, Mike realizes he won’t have to find a new home for the orphaned children. They found a new home for him.

This year’s Toronto International Film Festival will open with a familiar face: filmmaker David Gordon Green’s latest, the world premiere of his heartfelt comedy “Nutcrackers,” will kick off the festival on September 5. While Green is a regular at the annual festival, screening everything from his Jake Gyllenhaal-starring Boston Marathon biopic “Stronger” to his horror re-quel “Halloween” at the event, 2024 marks the first time he will officially open the fall fest.
The film also sounds as if it marks a return to early form for the longtime auteur, who has spent his most recent years helming a series of horror-centric sequels and remakes, including three “Halloween” films and last year’s “The Exorcist: Believer.” For his newest feature, Green seems to be reinvested in the kind of personal drama that drove early films like “All the Real Girls” and “Undertow,” albeit with a slightly lighter touch.

Let’s flashback to the summer of ’95 when movies were more than flicks—they were cultural events, grand spectacles that had everyone buzzing. That year, theaters were ablaze with standout blockbusters that defined the summer movie season. Michael Bay’s explosive Bad Boys kicked off the buddy cop genre into high gear with Will Smith and Martin Lawrence turning the charm up to eleven. Then there was Die Hard with a Vengeance, where Bruce Willis teamed up with Samuel L. Jackson in a thrilling game of cat and mouse through the streets of New York, which, for my money, is the best of the bunch. But let’s save that for another day. Even Disney threw its hat in the ring with Pocahontas, captivating audiences with its lush animation and heartfelt storytelling.

Any regular theme park attendee probably has a list of their favorite roller coasters and rides (and maybe a go-to churro stand or two). But what about the hyper-specific category of special effects shows? Live stunt shows don't count, because those are too well-known. Instead, we're talking about more obscure attractions, the ones people might wander into on a whim between waiting in line for the park's ultra-popular rides.
In these special effects shows, most of which have since been closed down or revamped into other attractions altogether, park visitors were essentially herded into a controlled area to witness some kind of bombastic demonstration. Younger visitors may not even remember these, but they experienced their heyday in the 1990s, and were often based on a popular movie from the time.

Ya know that feeling when you watch something dumb, and even though you know it’s stupid, you can’t help but laugh and enjoy yourself? The 1980s are full of comedies like that. Yeah, we know they’re dumb and not especially clever, but whatever, man, every now and then, you’re in a bad mood, and you want to turn your brain off. That’s why they made seven Police Academy movies. No one thought they were good, but we watched them anyway because they were stupid in a pleasing way.

Season 21 of NCIS has already ended and we have to wait at least two months for season 22. How do you fill your free time?
We offer you naval stories packed in the format of a full-length movie – if you watch one a week, you can just make it to the release of the new season of NCIS.
1. In the Heart of the Sea, 2015
In 1819, the ship Essex set sail from a port in Massachusetts with a crew of two dozen to hunt whales. In the fall of 1820, a year and a half of successful hunting was interrupted when a giant sperm whale attacked the ship, forcing the sailors to take to the boats. For more than three months, they struggled to survive.
In this movie, director Ron Howard tries to connect fiction and reality, adding a sense of mysticism to the story of the voyage of the whaling ship Essex.

It’s a story that’s ripe for a documentary. And for such an incident that’s tied to a high-profile name, it’s seemingly big enough for two documentaries.
