As a Stephen King fan, I always enjoy seeing the bestselling author pop up in cameo appearances. Over the years, King has made plenty of cameos, and even done some full-blown acting, like when he played doomed farmer Jordy Verrill in "Creepshow." For the most part, King tends to cameo in projects adapted directly from his work. But every now and then, the master of horror will put in an appearance in someone else's material. He did a guest voice spot (as himself) on "The Simpsons," he shows up in the rom-com "Fever Pitch," and he was even on "Frasier" once. If you ask King, his best acting work isn't in a Stephen King project at all. No, according to the author, his "finest moment" was when he showed up on the hit TV series "Sons of Anarchy."

Growing up in the 1990s, I had two obsessions: Stephen King and "The X-Files." So when it was revealed that King, the master of horror himself, was going to pen an episode of the cult hit series, I was over the moon. Then I watched the episode. Sadly, King's "X-Files" ep, titled "Chinga," was not great. For one thing, it split-up Mulder (David Duchovny) and Scully (Gillian Anderson), which never goes well — the show needs these two working side-by-side, feeding off each other. If you don't believe me, just think about how the show went downhill after Duchovny left for a period, and how worse it got when Anderson started appearing in less episodes as well. For another thing, the story, about a haunted doll that forces people to harm themselves, fails to illicit much emotion. "The X-Files" could be a genuinely scary show, but "Chinga" is almost entirely scare-free,...

In April of 1985, Stephen King told The Washington Post he was working on a sprawling new novel; a book that had him "obsessed for years." "I've been working on the rewrite, and I'm surrounded by this huge manuscript," he said. "There are times when I think I just ought to burn it." He didn't burn it. Instead, he finished the book, and it arrived on shelves a little over a year later, in September of 1986. The book was "It," and it would be King's magnum opus. Seemingly everything King knew about scaring people was packed into his massive tome about an ancient shape-shifting evil entity that likes to snack on children.
Stephen King has written a lot of books, but if I had to pick three that stand out the most, at least on a public consciousness level, they would be "The Shining," "Pet Sematary," and of course, "It." While...

Earlier this year, we heard that Ian Nathan, author of Alien Vault, Terminator Vault, Stephen King at the Movies, The Legend of Mad Max, and books about filmmakers James Cameron, Ridley Scott, David Lynch, Steven Spielberg, Tim Burton, Wes Anderson, the Coen brothers, the Coppolas, Peter Jackson, Quentin Tarantino, and Clint Eastwood, is teaming up with Creatorvc, the production company behind documentaries like the In Search of Darkness trilogy, In Search of Tomorrow, and First Person Shooter to bring us a documentary called Aliens Expanded, a 4-hour examination of writer/director James Cameron’s 1986 classic Aliens. Digital copies of that documentary can be ordered at This Link – and now it has been announced that Nathan and Creatorvc are continuing their working relationship with The Thing Expanded, a documentary that aims to be the ultimate companion to John Carpenter’s The Thing!

In 2018, the second season of David E. Kelley’s adaptation of Stephen King’s Mr. Mercedes aired once again on the Audience Network. Instead of adapting the second book in the true crime novel franchise — 2015’s Finders Keepers — the show’s sophomore season jumped ahead to the finale of the Mercedes trilogy, 2016’s End of Watch.

Get obsessed with The Fanatic (Moose), an indie thriller directed by Limp Bizkit’s Fred Durst, now streaming on Screambox.
In the film, Moose (played by John Travolta) gets cheated out of meeting his hero, Hunter Dunbar. Moose then hunts down Dunbar to get the celebrity interaction he feels he deserves.
“Harmless at first, Moose’s actions begin to take a dark turn. Against the advice of his friend Leah (Ana Golja), Moose begins to make frequent visits to his hero’s private home. As the visits continue to escalate, Dunbar finds himself in increasing danger.”
The story was allegedly inspired by a real-life fan who pursued Durst many years ago and looks to be slightly inspired by Stephen King’s Misery.
All he wanted was an autograph. Lol.
Watch it now on Screambox.

Keanu Reeves’ stylish scenes from The Matrix were shot with the help of green screens and wirework from a martial arts legend. Naomi Watts’ interaction with the monstrous ape in King Kong never happened on the film’s set. The behind-the-scenes photos from many of the famous Hollywood productions tell a completely different story from the actual film.

We recently learned that Paramount Pictures' and Edgar Wright's long-gestating adaptation of Stephen King's The Running Man is finally moving forward with Glen Powell in the lead role of Ben Richards, and rumors are beginning to swirl about the movie's supporting cast.
Following on from a recent report that Sydney Sweeney - who previously starred alongside Powell in romantic comedy Anyone But You - is being eyed to play the female lead, Daniel Richtman has heard that Katy O'Brian is also up for an undisclosed supporting role.
No details on who she would play, but there are really only two significant female characters in the book: Richards' wife Shelia and his hostage, Amelia.
O'Brian had a small role in season 3 of The Mandalorian, and also played Jentorra in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. She's been getting a lot of attention in Hollywood thanks to her more recent work in Love Lies Bleeding.

Lionsgate released its first quarter financial results after the spinoff of the media giant’s studio business into a separately traded stock.
The studio, led by CEO Jon Feltheimer, posted a first quarter net loss attributable to shareholders at $59.4 million, compared to a year-earlier $70.7 million loss, on overall revenue falling to $834.7 million, against a year-earlier $908.6 million.
“We’re pleased to report a solid quarter despite unprecedented industry disruption and the aftereffects of the strikes,” Feltheimer said in a statement that accompanied his company’s latest financial results. “There are things in our environment over which we have little control: the impact of disruption on our buyers & distributors, market volatility and the long tail of the strikes and the pandemic,” Feltheimer argued.

Exclusive: Judy Greer (The Best Christmas Pageant Ever) is set to star alongside Owen Wilson in Apple TV+’s new, currently-untitled golf comedy series from Jason Keller (Ford v Ferrari), Deadline can reveal.
Greer will play Amber-Linn, the ex-wife of Wilson’s over-the-hill, ex-pro golfer, Pryce Cahill. She takes over the role from Jamie Neumann, whose reasons for departing the project weren’t made clear.
Created, showrun, written and exec produced by Keller, the show’s plot hinges on the fact that Pryce Cahill’s golfing career was derailed prematurely 20 years ago. After he gets fired from his job at an Indiana sporting goods store and his wife walks out on him, Pryce hedges his bets entirely on a troubled 17-year-old golf phenom, to be played by Peter Dager.
Others set for roles in the 10-episode series include Marc Maron, Mariana Treviño and Lilli Kay.

Pumpkinhead II: Blood Wings was originally released in the UK at a time when I was heavily getting into horror yet was, legally, still too young to rent 18-rated titles from the local video shop (a shop which to this day I credit with the formative years of my movie tastes). It was also at a time when Jeff Burr was being hailed, at least in some corners of the UK and US horror press, as the future of the genre. After all, he had helmed the fan-favourite Vincent Price-starring horror anthology From a Whisper to a Scream and then the very successful sequel The Stepfather 2, before hitting the “big time” as director on the third film in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise.

“Presence” will soon be felt.
Steven Soderbergh’s highly anticipated ghost story, written by David Koepp and starring Lucy Liu, Chris Sullivan and Julia Fox, will be released theatrically by Neon in January 2025. The studio released a brand-new teaser for the psychological thriller on Wednesday, which you can watch below.
The approach that the teaser takes is nifty — it just lists off some of Soderbergh’s past masterpieces, while a camera slowly moves from outside of a suburban house to inside. That’s it. The implication is clear: “Presence” is an event, as only the second Soderbergh movie to be released theatrically since 2018’s “Unsane” and the other film (“Magic Mike’s Last Dance”) was made for streaming before being changed at the last minute to a theatrical release. That really does make “Presence” special.

Since each month brings a plethora of new additions to streaming libraries across all platforms, from Netflix to Tubi, that means an insane selection of all styles and types of horror available at our fingertips. A brand new month means a new Max horror guide.
Max doesn’t just serve as the spot for Warner Bros. titles, but offers hubs to connect you to HBO, Cartoon Network, TCM, and curated selections to find even more pockets of horror. That means a variety of horror from nearly every era, though expect this month’s new additions to be light.
Here are the best Max horror movies you can stream right now.

Pennywise the Clown is arguably horror author Stephen King’s most famous creation. During an interview, he discussed the impact his novel It will have on popular culture after his death. His take on the situation seems a little myopic. The Carrie author doesn’t take his cinematic legacy into account as much as he should.
Stephen King said Pennywise the Clown will be around forever
During a 2022 interview with Bloody Disgusting, King revealed that he viewed Pennywise as his sturdiest creation. “I think that when I die I will kind of disappear from the paperback racks,” he opined. “But that f****** clown is going to live forever. That’s one thing I’ve got going for me.”
While King has written several sequels over the years, he won’t write a sequel to It. “Well, I don’t have a relationship to Pennywise now,” King said. “Because I have...

One of the biggest icons in horror is Pennywise the Clown from It. That doesn’t mean he’s a good character. In fact, anyone who watched It and It: Chapter Two closely will notice he fails so hard as a villain that it’s embarrassing.
Why Pennywise the Clown scares people even though he’s a terrible character
Some people are terrified of clowns, whether they’re regular clowns, horror movie clowns, well-written clowns, or poorly written clowns. Moviegoers with hardcore coulrophobia were going to hate Pennywise no matter what. For better or worse, some people are so frightened by the image of a clown that they cannot notice that Pennywise is a bad character.
While the first film plays him up as a force to be reckoned with, he’s ultimately defeated by a bunch of kids who aren’t even old enough to get a learner’s permit.

Despite a slew of rumors to the contrary, it looks like Anyone But You co-stars Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney will Not be re-teaming on Edgar Wright’s upcoming adaptation of The Running Man. This rumour had been picking up steam recently, with many outlets claiming an official announcement of the two re-teaming was imminent. Collider debunked the rumor with them noting unnamed sources as saying she had never been involved. While I suppose they could be wrong, I tend to take Collider’s word on this one, as it seemed unlikely the two would re-team so shortly after Anyone But You, despite them having said to be looking for future projects to collaborate on.
If anything, I can understand why this rumour started. The Running Man remake is set to be directed by Edgar Wright, who also has a Barbarella remake in the works with Sweeney. The Running Man...

Apart from trying to avoid back-to-back Stephen King, trust me, he will be coming back this year as its kind of inevitable, I also like looking at modern horror adaptations. This is two-fold as the internet has done the 80s and 90s to death but also because there are some genuinely original and fantastic IPs that have yet to get the spotlight they deserve. The most recent example of this is The Ruins which is a horror one hit wonder from Scott Smith, yeah, he did other things but that was his only horror novel, and that’s a cool and original piece. The Ritual wasn’t one of those immediate releases where the book was churned into a movie before the book had time to cook and it is the only adaptation from a very U.K author’s works. While the movie did extremely well on Netflix and...

"This ain't America... this is Derry."
HBO has released the first footage from the upcoming It prequel series - which now appears to be officially titled It: Welcome to Derry - and while Pennywise himself doesn't appear, we do hear the evil entity's laugh and catch a glimpse of one of his signature red balloons.
The rest of the brief teaser features shots of children looking understandably terrified as the demonic creature asserts its influence over the townspeople by making their worst fears a reality.
Bill Skarsgård has been confirmed to reprise the role of Pennywise from the movies.

Stephen King movies have been with us almost as long as Stephen King books — King's first novel "Carrie" became a film two years after it hit bookshelves. And while the adaptations have been coming steadily since the '70s, King movies and TV shows experienced something of a boom in the 2010s. This was primarily due to 2017's film adaptation of "It," which became a horor blockbuster, hauling in $701.8 million at the box office. Suddenly, everyone wanted to be in the Stephen King business again, and the aftermath of "It" saw a wealth of adaptations get the green light. This trend hasn't died out, either — new King adaptations continue to come our way. A long-delayed take on "Salem's Lot" is due out on Max later this year, and film adaptations of the King short stories "The Life of Chuck" and "The Monkey" are both on the horizon.

Jenna Ortega and Glen Powell are two stars who know a thing or two about legacy sequels. Ortega has helped spearhead the latest Scream reboot in recent years and is about to star in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, whilst Powell has proven his movie star chops with standout turns in the likes of Top Gun: Maverick and Twisters. But, according to Deadline, it looks like the duo are set to leave franchise fare behind to team up on the latest film from J.J. Abrams. Per the trade's reporting, Ortega and Powell are both in final talks to board Abrams' as-yet-untitled latest movie at Warner Bros.
It wouldn't be an exaggeration to say we know next to nothing about what Abrams is cooking up over at his Bad Robot HQ at this point, beyond the fact the Star Wars: Episode IX — The Rise Of Skywalker director has written the script himself and — as...

“House of the Dragon” fans who were expecting the Battle of the Gullet in the Season 2 finale were disappointed, but showrunner Ryan Condal says the wait will be worth it.
The finale concludes with nearly all the various gathered armies marching to what seems like all-out war. One of those mustered forces are The Triarchy who — thanks to the mud wrestling skills of Tyland Lannister — have been recruited by Team Green to bust Corlys Velaryon’s blockade of the Gullet. This leads to one of the bloodies sea battles in Westerosi history: The Battle of the Gullet.
In a press conference following Sunday’s Season 2 finale, Condal explained they wanted to do the Battle of the Gullet justice and “build anticipation.”
“We were trying to give the Gullet, which is arguably the most anticipated — well, I would say maybe the second most anticipated action event of “Fire & Blood,” trying to...

Jenna Ortega is in talks to join Glen Powell in J.J. Abrams’ forthcoming, untitled Warner Bros. movie.
Ortega will next be seen in Warner Bros.’ “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” and would star alongside Powell, whose summer blockbuster “Twisters” (a Warner Bros. co-production) is nearing the $200 million domestic mark.
Not much is known about Abrams’ new film except that it is not a time travel movie (as had been previously speculated) and that Abrams both wrote the script and will be directing. The project will be produced by Abrams and his production company Bad Robot.
Ortega, in addition to returning for the second season of “Wednesday,” recently finished filming Taika Waititi’s “Klara and the Sun,” A24’s “Death of a Unicorn” and an untitled film directed by Trey Edward Shults. “Wednesday,” it’s worth noting, is the most-watched Netflix series of all time. The upcoming TV series Welcome to Derry, which will serve as a prequel to Warner Bros’ two-part adaptation of the classic Stephen King novel It (pick up a copy Here), was originally meant to be for the Max streaming service, but we recently learned that it will be airing on HBO as well. The show went into production in Port Hope, Ontario earlier this year, aiming for a 2025 premiere – and not only did some footage from the show make its way into the HBO promo embedded above, but it has also been revealed that production has wrapped!
Brad Caleb Kane (Tokyo Vice) and Jason Fuchs (Wonder Woman), who was a co-producer on It: Chapter Two, are the showrunners on Welcome to Derry. The show is being executive produced by Andy Muschietti and Barbara Muschietti, the sibling director/producer duo that was behind the two It movies, through their production company Double Dream.

After co-starring in Anyone But You, Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell look like they’re set to reunite for Edgar Wright’s take on The Running Man.
While it’s by no means a done deal, reporter Daniel Richtman is claiming that Sydney Sweeney is in line to star in the new take on The Running Man alongside Glen Powell. The two actors generated lots of headlines for their 2023 romcom Anyone But You, with their very successful press tour lighting up the world of social media and presumably being one of the reasons that the film went on to gross $220m theatrically from a $25m budget. Cripes.
Onscreen, the duo enjoyed plenty of chemistry too and perhaps that’s why Edgar Wright is said to be looking at entreating Sweeney to star opposite Powell in his adaptation of Stephen King’s dystopian tale. The film is set to enter production...

Glen Powell is set to play Ben Richards in Paramount Pictures' and Edgar Wright's long-gestating adaptation of Stephen King's The Running Man, and we may know who'll be joining him as the movie's female lead.
According to reliable insider Daniel Richtman, Sydney Sweeney - who previously starred alongside Powell in romantic comedy Anyone But You - is being eyed to play an undisclosed role. There are a number of characters from the book she could play, but we'd say Ben's hostage, Amelia Williams, is the most likely possibility.
Sweeney is fast-becoming one of the most sought-after young actors in Hollywood after starring in the likes of Anyone But You and Immaculate, and is also set to play the title role in another upcoming Edgar Wright sci-fi re-adaptation, Barbarella.

In the dystopian future, a group of youths partake in a wildly popular, and very deadly, competition that's become a major source of entertainment. Sounds like "The Hunger Games," right? Well, that's not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about "The Long Walk," Stephen King's nasty 1979 novel published under the pseudonym Richard Bachman. Now, I'm not saying "The Hunger Games" is a rip-off of "The Long Walk," but there are definitely major similarities — which is probably why Francis Lawrence, the helmer of several "Hunger Games" movies, has been hired to bring "The Long Walk" to the screen.
Lawrence is by no means the first filmmaker attached to this project. At one point, the legendary George A. Romero wanted to turn "The Long Walk" into a movie. Later, Frank Darabont, who directed the Stephen King movies "The Shawshank Redemption," "The Green Mile," and "The Mist," was attached to helm. Eventually, like Romero,...

"Can Stephen King scare even himself? Has the author of 'Carrie,' 'The Shining,' 'Cujo,' and 'Christine' ever conceived a story so horrifying that he was for a time unwilling to finish writing it? Yes. This is it." So said the book jacket for "Pet Sematary," Stephen King's modern gothic horror novel about a burial ground that raises the dead. It was a great hook — the master of horror had written something so damn scary that even he was scared of it! But was such a claim accurate — or just good marketing material? The truth lies somewhere in the middle.
Published in 1983, "Pet Sematary" is one of King's most popular novels, and its concept of a cursed graveyard that brings the dead back to life has been fully ingrained into the public consciousness. If someone a mentions a "pet cemetery" in any context, there's...

Curiously, the book alluded to in the headline is not "Christine," the novel Stephen King published in 1983. "Christine" follows a young man named Arnie who buys a disused 1958 Plymouth Fury and decides to fix it up. The car, however, begins asserting an eerie influence over Artie, turning him into a defiant 1950s greaser. He names the car Christine, and it soon begins acting with a mind of its own, chasing down anyone who would do Artie harm. Christine is a jealous girlfriend that feeds on Arnie's affection.
Celebrated director John Carpenter famously adapted "Christine" to the big screen the same year as its publication, and many of Carpenter's eerie visuals are still scary to this day. The scene where Christine "grows back" after being smashed up by bullies is a sequence on par with the werewolf transformation scene in George Waggner's 1941 classic "The Wolf Man." The 1980s was a conservative time,...

Stephen King might not typically be the person folks look to for Western movie recommendations, but the horror legend took to Twitter/X recently to recommend an overlooked Western starring the always-great Kurt Russell. King has written some stories that are Western-adjacent, especially his "The Dark Tower" series, but generally his work is in a very different genre. The movie he recommended, however, totally makes sense, because it's probably the most horrific Western ever made.
The Western King recommended was "Bone Tomahawk," S. Craig Zahler's 2015 film that stars Patrick Wilson as Arthur O'Dwyer, whose wife Samantha (Lili Simmons) has been kidnapped by the terrifying "Troglodytes," a group of cannibalistic cave people. Russell plays Sheriff Franklin Hunt, who gets drawn into helping O'Dwyer with a ragtag group of townsfolk, including bloodthirsty lawman John Brooder (Matthew Fox) and the town's doctor, Deputy Chicory (Richard Jenkins). Stephen King's books have enjoyed countless movie and TV adaptations over the years, but not all of them are winners. Sure, there's "Shawshank Redemption" and "Misery," but there's also the recent "Firestarter" remake, or whatever that 2017 "Dark Tower" film was. When a new King adaptation is announced, there's no guarantee that it'll be worth the watch. In a 2017 interview with Vulture, the author himself gave his theory for why some of the adaptations fail, and why some of them don't:
"I think that sometimes when people buy a book, they just want the situation and then they'll build the movie off it. It's like buying a launch pad and putting your own rocket on it: Sometimes that works, and sometimes it explodes. A lot of times, I feel like the filmmakers are better off if they follow the arc of my stories closely. Now, maybe that's egocentric, but that's the way I feel.

“Mayor of Kingstown” is coming to an end, for now.
Ahead of the third season finale, which streams Sunday on Paramount+, TheWrap is thrilled to bring you an exclusive clip, featuring Jeremy Renner’s Mike McLusky and Tobi Bamtefa’s Bunny.
In the sneak peek, the pair can be seen divvying up Kingstown, the fictional city that runs on the for-profit prison system. “There’s a whole lot of ambition right there,” Bunny tells Mike as they are assessing their plan. Bunny will settle for Kingstown, while Mike gets — well, he’ll get “some sort of peace,” according to him.
And if you have no clue what is going on in the clip, have no fear. Stephen King, one of America’s most celebrated authors and the writer behind (among other things) “The Shining” and “It,” recently tweeted, “I have no f–king clue what is going on in ‘Mayor of Kingstown,...

The writing duo of Steve Desmond and Michael Sherman received screenplay credit alongside director M. Night Shyamalan on the film Knock at the Cabin, which was an adaptation of the Paul Tremblay book The Cabin at the End of the World. Now The Hollywood Reporter has broken the news that Desmond and Sherman are set to write to write the script for a horror thriller called Wilderness Reform, which is being produced by Pet Sematary: Bloodlines director Lindsey Anderson Beer and is based on a novel written by Harrison Query and Matt Query.
Wilderness Reform is set up at Paramount Pictures. Beer is producing the film through her Lab Brew production company, with the project being part of her first-look deal with Paramount. Scott Glassgold is also producing through his company Ground Control.
The novel by the Querys is said to have “shades of classic Stephen King stories, dealing with themes of loss of innocence.

DC’s Joker has been through the ringer ever since making his debut more than 80 years ago. Even on the small and big screens, the character has encountered his share of adventures, exploits and sheer menace. And it’s all about to evolve like never before. Many have argued that 2019’s Joker should have been a standalone film, but even those who welcomed a sequel never would have anticipated that it would be a musical. But that’s just where Folie à Deux will next take the Clown Prince of Crime. So, where else have Todd Phillips and Joaquin Phoenix envisioned Arthur Fleck?
Todd Phillips and Joaquin Phoenix were so enamored with Joker that they immediately started kicking around ideas for a sequel on the set of the first one. As Phillips told Empire, “Joaquin and I talked about another one the whole time while we were making the first movie,...

What happens when you watch something described as barely watchable especially when the original narrative it was based on was termed as “awful” by its own author? Hi, I’m Niki, and this is The Tommyknockers for Horror TV Shows We Miss.
I’m sure we have quite a few Stephen King fans among our viewers so it will be interesting to see what even the most hardcore of you think. Do we agree with King, the critics, and maybe most of humanity? Or is there something here that we’ve been missing? This is not the worst adaptation I’ve ever seen– at least not yet. The first part started off slow for me, and even though I wanted to bail at certain points I stayed. It may have been my love for Butch, or Gard’s drunken intrusive thoughts, or the complete and utter fever dream that this presents as.

Stephen King’s opinion on Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining is well-known lore and a big driving force behind a second take at adapting his popular horror novel more faithfully with the TV movie mini-series The Shining. One of King’s gripes with Kubrick’s iconic film is the casting of Jack Nicholson, since Nicholson already sported an intensity about him prior to The Overlook, and King insists that the scariest notion of Jack Torrance is that he was a normal, unassuming dad who is driven to be a monster. Enter Steven Weber, who is known for his long-standing role as Brian Hackett in the sitcom Wings. Weber was primarily seen as a comedic actor, which made his casting as Jack more what King had envisioned.
Weber would share a little anecdote about working with King when he appeared on the Inside of You podcast. During the production of the mini-series,...
