Keanu Reeves’ stylish scenes from The Matrix were shot with the help of green screens and wirework from a martial arts legend. Naomi Watts’ interaction with the monstrous ape in King Kong never happened on the film’s set. The behind-the-scenes photos from many of the famous Hollywood productions tell a completely different story from the actual film.

On a rainy Nov. 15, 2023, a small group of music and film luminaries gathered at the Village Recorder, the famed studio housed in an old Masonic temple in West L.A. where everything from Fleetwood Mac’s Tusk to Snoop Dogg’s Doggystyle was recorded.
Among them were Leonardo DiCaprio, Martin Scorsese, Lily Gladstone, Joni Mitchell and Jackson Browne. They had come to celebrate the life of Robbie Robertson, legendary frontman of The Band, successful solo artist and prolific film score producer for whom the studio was like a second home. Robertson had died three months earlier after an excruciating battle with prostate cancer — long in remission but back with a vengeance in 2022 — that had spread to his spine and brain. He was 80.
Scorsese emceed the memorial, in which he tearfully spoke of his brotherhood with Robertson. The director, 81, was a longtime collaborator of Robertson’s, having helmed the seminal 1978 rockumentary The Last Waltz,...

Jack Nicholson will be forever remembered as Jack Torrance in Stanley Kubrick’s iconic 1980 horror flick The Shining. Being the caretaker of the Overlook Hotel, the ghosts finally convince Torrance to do something unthinkable.

The 1980s are often viewed as a pop cultural wasteland: a post-disco, style-over-substance hellscape where music videos turned vacuous bands and singers into chart-topping titans, blockbuster-chasing executives drained films of personality and artistic merit, and television pandered to a benumbed viewership with hacky sitcoms, formula dramas, and risible nighttime soaps. This was only half-true.
There was a good bit of dreck polluting the multiplexes and the airwaves throughout the eight-year Reagan era (and the Bush I hangover), but you'd have to be a killjoy to have lived through that time and turned up your nose at the bevy of brilliant artists who were working at their absolute peak. Prince, Spielberg, Streep, Selleck ... yes, Selleck. Tom Selleck.

Nearly ten years after director George Miller returned to the post-apocalyptic wasteland and redefined the action genre with Mad Max: Fury Road, the Australian auteur returned to replace Charlize Theron with Anya Taylor Joy to tell the origin story of the warrior who helped Mad Max cross that fury road in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. And regardless of how underwhelming its box office may be, this high octane prequel will surely stand the test of time alongside the rest of the Mad Max saga, certainly more so than another follow-up from Warner Bros. to a car racing franchise way back in 1984, when the late great Burt Reynolds bid farewell to the formula comedy genre that made him a superstar alongside an all-star cast (Jackie Chan! Frank Sinatra! Tony Danza!) with Cannonball Run II.

In László Benedek's 1953 crime drama "The Wild One," a young woman dancing with a member of the Black Rebels Motorcycle Club asks their leader, the pouty-lipped Johnny (Marlon Brando), what he's rebelling against, to which Johnny replies, unsmiling, "Whaddya got?" The most famous line of Brando's career up there with "I'm gonna make him an offer he can't refuse," it also might as well have been a mission statement for the notoriously temperamental, wild card actor.
Brando's career trajectory reflected his disposition. Where the 1950s saw him collecting accolades and awards left and right, the actor's ill-reputable conduct overshadowed practically everything he did onscreen in the decade that came after. It wasn't until the '70s that Brando's legacy as a screen icon was restored, even as he continued to try and sabotage himself with his unpredictable behavior and seeming apathy towards many of the films he worked on.

One of the oldest restaurants in Los Angeles, once frequented by stars like Mae West, prominent politicians, and the city’s powerbrokers, was severely damaged by fire during the early morning hours Saturday.
The Pacific Dining Car restaurant, a century-old a building on the outskirts of downtown Los Angeles, was a replica of a railway train car. In its heyday, it was a fixture of fine dining in L.A. and appeared in television shows and movies, including 1974’s Chinatown starring Jack Nicholson and Faye Dunaway, and the 2001 film Training Day, with Denzel Washington and Ethan Hawke.
The restaurant was shuttered during the pandemic, but the family vowed to bring it back, even after auctioning off items from it. Last year, the vacant building officially became a historic cultural monument in the city of Los Angeles.

Stunt casting can always be really hit or miss — sometimes audiences are excited to see a fun guest star in a surprising role, and sometimes the gimmick ends up feeling, well, gimmicky. Even when it works, like Marlon Brando playing Jor-El in Richard Donner's "Superman," it's frequently a major headache for folks behind-the-scenes. After all, stunt casting involves bringing an actor or star not used to a certain genre or medium into that arena, and actors used to art films and dramas might have a hard time adjusting to the very different requirements of science fiction, fantasy, and horror movies. This goes double for major franchises, where the actor has to contend not only with the unique challenges of a new genre but also the expectations of the fandoms. Since there are few fandoms as intense in their love or as scrutinizing as "Star Trek," stunt casting has to be done very,...

Stephen King’s opinion on Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining is well-known lore and a big driving force behind a second take at adapting his popular horror novel more faithfully with the TV movie mini-series The Shining. One of King’s gripes with Kubrick’s iconic film is the casting of Jack Nicholson, since Nicholson already sported an intensity about him prior to The Overlook, and King insists that the scariest notion of Jack Torrance is that he was a normal, unassuming dad who is driven to be a monster. Enter Steven Weber, who is known for his long-standing role as Brian Hackett in the sitcom Wings. Weber was primarily seen as a comedic actor, which made his casting as Jack more what King had envisioned.
Weber would share a little anecdote about working with King when he appeared on the Inside of You podcast. During the production of the mini-series,...

Perhaps one of the most fantastical and unconventional movies directed by Tim Burton, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005) made waves in the musical as well as fantasy genre. The movie has managed to hold attention of fans for several years due to Burton’s whimsical style and the illustrated plot.
What most fans managed to overlook is a slight connection that exists in this movie with another one of Burton’s masterpieces, Batman (1989). The link is very subtle and can classify as intelligent wordplay or inspired reference.
The hidden plot twist or is it?
In the 1989 Batman movie directed by Tim Burton, one of the major plot lines involves a fictional chemical compound used by Gotham’s notorious bad boy- Joker. This chemical was called ‘smylex’ which supposedly once released in the air could cause people to laugh uncontrollably, eventually causing death.

Rotten Tomatoes might just be a review aggregator, but its influence is significant — inordinate, you might say. The website that should give you a rough guide as to what critics think about a film has become the arbiter of whether a film is deemed good or not, or in Rt parlance, "fresh" or "rotten." This binary would be fine if Rt wasn't as influential as it is, but these days the Tomatometer's reach is wide, and our adherence to its decrees often borders on unflinching. A green splat is enough to put most casual viewers off a film, which is a shame because that means hordes of people are overlooking unfairly-maligned classics like "The Comedy," or worse, the delights of the seven John Travolta movies to achieve a 0% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Stanley Kubrick’s “The Shining” is a movie that lives in its own special sphere. Simply put, I think it may be the most fascinating horror film ever made…that’s not scary. The most fascinating horror film ever made that is scary is “Psycho”; that’s because it’s the ultimate film to watch yourself watching. And let’s be clear: I realize that “The Shining” is widely considered to be a terrifying movie. But I saw it the night it opened — on May 23, 1980 — and have seen it a dozen times since, and while the film’s mood and mysteries have deepened for me, to the point that I find it a uniquely seductive piece of cinema, I have always had the same problem with it, going back to that very first viewing.

There have been all kinds of iterations of the Joker over the years. Some veered more towards the exaggerated mobster route, like Jack Nicholson in Tim Burton’s Batman; there was Heath Ledger’s nihilistic terrorist in The Dark Knight; Jared Leto’s eccentric tattooed gang leader in Suicide Squad. But in Joker, Joaquin Phoenix gave us a totally different conception of who Batman’s arch-nemesis might be – a lonely, disenfranchised failed comedian whose inner turmoil spills over into violent acts that bring out the darkness festering in Gotham City. In Todd Phillips’ film, Arthur Fleck wasn’t a villain, let alone a maniacal schemer – more a mercurial, unpredictable force moving through the world in his own unique way.
And so, in Joker: Folie À Deux – the much-anticipated sort-of-sequel that sends Fleck to Arkham, where he’ll strike up a music-fuelled relationship with Lady Gaga’s Harley ‘Lee’ Quinzel – we...

The tales of tyranny from the set are legendary, with stories of endless takes and Duvall suffering from nervous exhaustion.
Shine On: The Forgotten Shining Location examines an area of the film not previously covered in documentaries like Rodney Ascher’s 2012 film Room 237.

Russell Crowe appeared as the genius scientist Jor-El of Krypton in Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel. Snyder’s vision for the character was entirely different from Richard Donner’s Superman, where Marlon Brando played the role. Crowe later revealed that he did the role of Superman’s birth father as a tribute to The Godfather actor.

Crowe recalled the story of how Brando loved one of his performances so much, that he left a gift for him after his death. Besides Crowe, Sean Penn and Clive Owen were also considered for the role of Jor-El. He briefly reprised his role in Zack Snyder’s Justice League.

Few movie sets in Hollywood history have generated more interest than the Overlook Hotel from Stanley Kubrick’s “The Shining.” The fictional Colorado hotel provides the backdrop for Jack Torrance’s (Jack Nicholson) descent into madness, and Kubrick devotees have spent countless hours analyzing symbolism in the production design and the disorienting effects created by the hotel’s impossible floor plan. The hotel sets, hailed by many as some of the defining craftsmanship of Kubrick’s filmmaking career, now get their moment in the spotlight in a new documentary set to be released on the late director’s birthday.
Produced in partnership with the Stanley Kubrick Film Archive and the director’s estate, “Shine On — The Forgotten ‘Shining’ Location” dives into Kubrick’s process of scouting locations for the film and working with his design team to bring his vision to life. (Warning: This article has major spoilers for "Twisters," so proceed with caution.)
The hit 1996 disaster movie "Twister" is packed with memorable moments. Whether it's one of the visual effects-laden sequences that put Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton in the middle of several deadly tornadoes, including that one with a flying cow (which isn't duplicated in "Twisters"), or the late, great Philip Seymour Hoffman throwing around phrases like "the suck zone" and "imminent rueage." But perhaps the most visually striking moment of tornado mayhem comes at night when a destructive funnel cloud is only visible amidst flashes of lightning that surround it.
During one of the moments of levity between intense storm-chasing sequences, Jo (Helen Hunt), Bill (Bill Paxton), and the rest of the crew are relaxing near a motel with a drive-in movie theater just next door. Robert Altman was in Houston filming “Brewster McCloud” when he met Shelley Duvall at a party. After the filmmaker and his crew became close to Duvall, Altman was convinced that she would be perfect as the off-beat young woman who falls for Brewster. Duvall, who had sold cosmetics and studied nutrition in college, was stunned. “I’m not an actress,” she insisted. To which Altman replied, “Oh yes, you are.”
At least that’s the way that Keith Carradine, a frequent collaborator of both Altman and Duvall, heard it. “I love that story,” Carradine says. “It’s so Bob, it’s so Shelley.”
Duvall died on July 11 at the age of 75, having long ago left Hollywood, but she left behind a treasure trove of indelible onscreen performances, playing Jack Nicholson’s terrified wife in “The Shining,” as well as a series of quirky roles in Altman films like “Nashville,” “3 Women” and “Popeye,...

Welcome back to Oscars Playback, in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng revisit Oscar ceremonies and winners of yesteryear. This week, we cover the 56th Academy Awards in 1984, honoring the films of 1983.
On her fifth Best Actress nomination, Shirley MacLaine finally took home the coveted prize for “Terms of Endearment,” which scored five wins total, including Best Picture. Declaring “I deserve this” at the end of her speech, MacLaine defeated her onscreen daughter, Debra Winger, for the prize — the penultimate time a film has produced double Best Actress nominees. Did MacLaine deserve it over Winger? Would Winger have won in supporting? And will we ever see double Best Actress nominees again?

The summer of 1999 had big things planned for the supernatural horror genre. In the midst of high-budget blockbuster movies emerged a small Indie movie named The Blair Witch Project. Directed by two University of Central Florida students, Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez, the movie drew inspiration from Steven Spielberg’s 1975 masterpiece Jaws.
Joshua Leonard in The Blair Witch Project (1999) || Artisan Entertainment
Initially many studios dismissed it, considering it a risky venture. However, The Blair Witch project brought in an incredible $248.6 million worldwide, despite having a $60,000 shooting budget. Further, the movie continues to haunt the audience even after 25 years of its release.
How Steven Spielberg’s Jaws inspired The Blair Witch Project
The movie, which tells the tale of three student filmmakers named Heather Donahue, Michael C. Williams, and Joshua Leonard, was a major factor in polarizing the found-footage horror genre. To document the Blair Witch legend, the three of them head into the Maryland woods.

There were bigger movie stars than Al Pacino in the 1970s, but between 1971 and 1975, he gave six utterly electric performances that placed him in the American film acting stratosphere alongside the likes of Marlon Brando, Dustin Hoffman, Jack Nicholson, and Robert De Niro. And as brilliant as those guys were, the virtuosity on display in "Panic in Needle Park," "The Godfather," "Scarecrow," "Serpico," "The Godfather Part II" and "Dog Day Afternoon" made a solid case for Pacino as the best of the bunch. He could be seductive, sympathetic, vulnerable, pathetic and terrifying –- sometimes all in the same movie. And his peers were dazzled enough to nominate him for four straight Oscars.
The full range of Pacino's genius can be found in Michael Corleone's journey from principled World War II returnee to brother-killing monster, but for sheer thespian fireworks, you can't top his live-wire portrayal of bank robber Sonny Wortzik...

It’s a fine line between genius and madness, and an even thinner, barely visible gossamer thread that demarcates genius and being categorized as difficult. Faye Dunaway has been labeled both, though in a competition between those two descriptives, “difficult” often had a three-to-one lead. Most documentaries about legendary stars would sand off its subject’s rough edges and try to present the most hagiography-friendly version imaginable. Faye, much like the force of nature (note that we did not say maelstrom) at the center of this movie, takes a bumpier road less traveled.

Film folklore is long shadowed by a story as intricate and subtle as the haunting hallways of the Overlook Hotel. It’s not going to be simple, but are you prepared to explore the rumors that circulated practically immediately after Stanley Kubrick’s iconic film The Shining came to light in 1980?
These murmurs weren’t just about the bone-chilling performance of Shelley Duvall, whose portrayal of the tortured wife almost immediately became the stuff of Hollywood legend. But it was also about the tempestuous sea that was the film’s production, where it was said that Kubrick, in his compulsive quest for perfection, demanded a symphony of takes for each scene, pushing Duvall to the brink of endurance.

When Shelley Duvall was cast to play Wendy Torrance in Stanley Kubrick’s “The Shining” (1980), the film she would become most famous for, it was overwhelmingly the most mainstream movie she’d ever done — but more to the point, it was the most mainstream character. Duvall, who died July 11 at 75, had spent the better part of a decade playing vibrant kooks and eccentrics in Robert Altman movies. The Shining, a landmark movie in Hollywood, and one of Stanley Kubrick’s greatest achievements, stands as a testament to how art can turn into a vivid nightmare and how passion can be corrupted by obsession in a single scene.

The film that made Jack Nicholson the ‘Here’s Johnny’ meme king and earned Shelley Duvall an insulting Razzie holds a dark and tortured history underneath the polished surface of its pop culture fame and timelessness.
The Shining: A Slow Descent Into Depravity
Despite earning a Golden Raspberry for it, Shelley Duvall’s powerful performance in the film was not entirely an act. A tale as old as time — the terrifying chase scene through the Overlook Hotel that followed the baseball bat-wielding wife defending herself from the axe-wielding husband was maniacally filmed over 100 times to get the perfect result.
