Patrick Lussier's 2011 film "Drive Angry" might belong to a genre hereby designated "neo-grindhouse." There was a wave of films in the late 2000s and early 2010s that sought to evoke the style or the content of a very specific type of exploitation movie that was popular in the 1970s. In addition to the Quentin Tarantino/Robert Rodriguez 2007 twofer "Grindhouse" and its spinoffs, films like "Redline," "The Man with the Iron Fists," "Turbo Kid," "Kung Fury," "Hatchet," "Torque," "Deathgasm," "House of the Devil," and "The Love Witch" popped up on the regular.
"Drive Angry" gleefully embraced its goofy, action/horror premise with aplomb. A dead race car driver named (sigh) John Milton (Nicolas Cage) escapes the clutches of Hell having stolen Satan's persona gun, a device called the Godkiller. On his tail is Satan's Accountant (William Fichtner), assigned with nabbing John and dragging him back to Hell. John,...

It’s hard enough to live with the existence of lost media you’ll never get to experience; some of these mofos are out here creating works of art for that express purpose. Maybe it’s a publicity stunt or a metaphor, or maybe they’re just trying to escape bad reviews, but whatever the case, some of us aren’t living to see…
5 ‘My Place in History’ by Dolly Parton
Buried somewhere in Dollywood is the song Parton intends to be her last, not to be dug up until her 100th birthday in 2046. Nobody else has ever heard “My Place in History,” and it’s entirely possible they never will. “I figure it’ll probably disintegrate and nobody will ever hear it, that’s what bothers me,” Parton has said, adding, “I don’t know whose damn idea that was.” After all, it’s not like she won’t...

It’s a bad time to be Eli Roth.
A miscalculation of near-mythic proportions, “Borderlands” has a whopping six percent on Rotten Tomatoes heading into its opening weekend. Those bad reviews (IndieWire gave it a “C-“) are the least of the “Hostel” filmmaker’s problems, as Lionsgate’s misguided video game adaptation has inspired assessments of not only the director’s filmography but also whether his impact on pop culture has been at all valuable.
This ranking can’t account for all of that. If you’re a fan of the types of genre films that Roth makes, read on. If you’re not, do not pass go, do not collect $200, and enjoy the “Borderlands” dogpile — a massive multiplayer online affair now available free of charge.
Last year, Roth’s meaty and murderous “Thanksgiving” did well for the provocateur. The seasonal holiday slasher, starring Nell Verlaque, Patrick Dempsey, and Addison Rae among others,...

Eli Roth has hinted Addison Rae will appear in 'Thanksgiving 2'. The 23-year-old singer and actress starred as Gaby in the 2023 holiday horror movie, and Roth - the director and co-writer of the first and second films - has admitted Rae's character was "kept alive for a reason". He said: "I love Addison Rae. We kept her alive for a reason. It doesn’t feel like a ‘Thanksgiving’ movie without Addison Rae."However, sources have told Variety that Rae is yet to officially sign up to the project. 'Thanksgiving' was based on the spoof trailer 52-year-old filmmaker Roth made 16 years ago for the Quentin Tarantino-Robert Rodriguez double bill 'Grindhouse'.The movie told the story of a serial killer who terrorised the residents of Plymouth, Massachusetts, while dressed as a 17th century pilgrim. Rae's character survived, as did Scuba (Gabriel Davenport), Ryan (Milo Manheim), Bobby...

Almost any search of Josh Hartnett will return a bevy of articles with a headline that is some variation of “Why Josh Hartnett Left Hollywood,” which is fair. It’s a fascinating story about a guy who saw himself as an artist thrust into the spotlight of a teen heartthrob. It’s the rare story of a human choosing a simpler, more purposeful life over ultra-fame.
It’s more than admirable. A great story. But today, in honor of his latest leading role in M. Night Shyamalan’s Trap, we’re just here to talk about blood, guts, and Josh Hartnett’s strange relationship with the horror genre.
It all began with The Faculty in 1998. Though Halloween: H20 was released first, he was offered the role of Zeke in The Faculty beforehand and had to work on both simultaneously. This started his career working with Dimension Films and the dreaded Weinsteins.

Rob Zombie has said that for every one film project of his that moves forward, there are five potential projects that fall by the wayside. We haven’t heard of quite that many unmade Rob Zombie movies, but we have heard of several over the years that never got off the ground… and unfortunately, most of them sounded pretty interesting. A little over a year ago, Zombie had said he didn’t know what his next movie is going to be, but he did know what it’s not going to be: he won’t be continuing his Firefly franchise, and he doesn’t want to make a sequel to The Munsters (which was poorly received). So while he figures out his next cinematic move, we we have put together a list of Rob Zombie Movies We Want To See!

The role of Superman is undeniably one of the most coveted in the superhero genre. For fans and actors alike, it’s a dream part, offering a lot to take in and enjoy. However, Hollywood often sees actors misjudging the potential of certain roles. Take Sean Connery, for instance, who famously turned down the role of Gandalf due to a lack of understanding.
Recently, we reported that renowned British actor Jude Law had once declined the opportunity to play Superman. Now, we have another intriguing tale: Josh Hartnett, a notable actor, also turned down the Superman role—twice!
The actor in question is Josh Hartnett, a former global star who chose to step back from the blinding lights of Hollywood to protect his mental and physical health. He is now enjoying a happy and peaceful life while successfully reviving his career.

The role of Superman is undoubtedly one of the most exciting ones in the world of superheroes. So, if you’re into that sort of thing, there is certainly a lot to take from the role, and it is one of the best roles that an actor can get. But, as it often turns out in Hollywood, some actors tend to have a false perception of a role at one point. Just remember that Sean Connery (in)famously rejected the role of Gandalf because he did not understand it, whatever that means.
Not that long ago, we reported how famous British actor Jude Law rejected the role of Superman some time ago, but we now have a story about another famous actor who rejected the role, but not once – he rejected it twice!

With Deadpool & Wolverine out now, we look at how a two-minute Deadpool test reel from 2014 led to a film that is about to change the MCU for good.
The general public was never even meant to see it, and yet the test footage for Deadpool has made more of a dent on pop culture than some multi-million dollar films with huge marketing departments behind them.
To this day, nobody has publicly admitted to leaking that footage in 2014. Some have pointed the finger at director Tim Miller; franchise star Ryan Reynolds has playfully hinted that he might have uploaded it to the internet that July. There are theories that the studio that commissioned it, 20th Century Fox, may have leaked it deliberately as part of an elaborate publicity campaign.

The Children, Eleanor!
We’ve spent the month of July discussing the badass babes of Robert Rodriguez’s Planet Terror (listen), the queer undertones of Stanley Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut (listen), and the “very bad weather” of Jan de Bont‘s 1996 tornado film, Twister (listen).
Now we’re wrapping up our de Bont double bill with his less successful 1999 special effects remake, The Haunting!
In the film, sheltered Eleanor (Lili Taylor) is recruited for a dubious insomnia study at the infamous Hill House by questionable doctor David Marrow (Liam Neeson). Along with bisexual Theo (Catherine Zeta-Taylor) and horny Luke (Owen Wilson), Nell is terrorized by annoying ghost children and the monstrous owner of the house, Hugh Crain (Charles Gunning).
As the spectral hauntings become more and more severe, Nell must uncover her tenuous connection to the previous victims before the terrible CGI swallows her and the other participants whole.

On track for megastardom, the actor turned down the part of Superman (twice) and turned his back on Hollywood. Now living in rural Hampshire, he talks about choosing fulfilling projects, his hippie childhood, the perils of stalkers – and the fun of owning pygmy goats
Every morning, as soon as the actor Josh Hartnett wakes up in his home in the Hampshire countryside, there are mouths to be fed. Most obviously, those of his four young children. But also: the dog, several guinea pigs, several more chickens and a small herd of pygmy goats. The goats, Hartnett notes, are his favourites.
“They’re the sweetest animals on the planet,” he says, over Zoom, from his home. “They’re like dogs. They would live in the house if they could. In fact, I’ve seen people having their goats in the house with diapers on, but we felt that was kinda cruel.

Robert Rodriguez, the mastermind behind some of the most violent and action-packed films of the 90s, took a drastic turn in his career by creating movies that his own kids could enjoy. After years of making gritty films like From Dusk Till Dawn and Desperado, Rodriguez shifted gears to create family-friendly movies that would become a staple in many children’s entertainment diets. It all began with 2001’s Spy Kids, a spy adventure film that introduced audiences to a new generation of pint-sized secret agents. But it was 2005’s The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl that really showcased Rodriguez’s ability to...

The celebrated legend Bill Paxton, known for his diverse and intense roles spanning from drama to action flicks, is perhaps best remembered for his impactful performances in movies like Aliens, True Lies, and Apollo 13. But unfortunately, despite his illustrious career, Paxton faced a unique personal challenge, where his children struggled to experience his work firsthand.

As far as child actor debuts, it's not quite Hailee Steinfeld in Joel and Ethan Coen's "True Grit." But now that the whole world knows full well that Glen Powell is a bona fide movie star (a fact getting slammed home with a tempestuous fury this week in "Twisters"), we can look back at his first big-screen appearance in Robert Rodriguez's 2003 film "Spy Kids 3: Game Over" and kind of see it.
Powell's big scene arrives early in the movie, when Juni (Daryl Sabata) wanders into a massive arena. It's here Juni meets the Long-fingered Boy (identified as such only in the credits), who zips the Spy Kid up to the top of a tower, throws him into a robotic suit, and informs him he'll be doing battle with a formidable combatant named Demetra (Courtney Jines). These days, it feels like George Clooney is known more for his political opinions than his acting career. Billions earned at the box office? Meh. Billions more raised in advocacy, humanitarian efforts, and charity? Yawn. Two-time People Magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive? Getting closer, but nah. Donald Trump calls you a “rat” on Truth Social? That’s when you know you’ve made it.
Believe it or not, George Clooney used to be famous for something other than his political flip-flops. Well, hold onto your hats because there was actually a time before Clooney’s latest head-scratcher: penning a New York Times op-ed calling Joe Biden unfit for office mere weeks after throwing him the mother of all fundraisers. Yes, you heard that right – he hosted a record-breaking cash bash for Biden, the biggest ever for a Democrat candidate, then declared to the world that the guy shouldn’t run.

Filming wrapped on director Eli Roth‘s adaptation of the Borderlands video game series from Gearbox and 2K way back in June of 2021. A year and a half later, Deadpool director Tim Miller had to step in to handle the project’s two weeks of reshoots because Roth had the chance to finally – after sixteen years – make a feature based on the Thanksgiving faux trailer he put together for the Quentin Tarantino / Robert Rodriguez collaboration Grindhouse. The Borderlands reshoots have been completed, Thanksgiving has come and gone, and Lionsgate is now gearing up to finally release Borderlands into the world on August 9th… and with that date right around the corner, a featurette has arrived online to give us a look at the “dysfunctional family” of characters at the heart of the story. Horror was in a bit of a funk in the late 90s. Then 25 years ago, in July 1999, The Blair Witch Project came along and changed everything.
In a 1996 article published in The Philadelphia Enquirer, film critic Desmond Ryan bemoaned the state of mainstream films. Citing such films as Independence Day, Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Eraser, and that year’s hurricane thrillride Twister, Ryan argued that Hollywood had become more interested in special effects than logic or character.
“It all began,” Ryan wrote, “when Twister’s killer tornadoes sucked up everything in their path – tractors, cows, common sense, continuity, plausibility, and the quaint notion that movies should have characters you care about.”
By the end of the 1990s, the horror genre appeared to have descended into a creative funk of its own. Of the horror films released toward the end of the decade, many of the most high-profile examples were remakes or sequels in somewhat tired franchises.

After accidentally (?) killing first his cat, and then his girlfriend (Kei Fujiwara) – with his new metal drill dick no less – the salary man and the fetishist engage in a destructive battle of wills that only ends when they fuse together. Together at least, the lovers set out to destroy the world.

After accidentally (?) killing first his cat, and then his girlfriend (Kei Fujiwara) – with his new metal drill dick no less – the salary man and the fetishist engage in a destructive battle of wills that only ends when they fuse together. Together at least, the lovers set out to destroy the world.

"Death Proof" is usually ranked lowest among Quentin Tarantino's directorial efforts, which is a shame since newbies might take that to mean it's not worth seeking out. (It absolutely is.) A 1970s exploitation homage initially released as part of his and Robert Rodriguez's failed 2007 "Grindhouse" double-feature experiment, the movie lends Tarantino's distinctive banter to a slasher about an over-the-hill stunt double, dubbed "Stuntman" Mike (Kurt Russell), who slays his victims using a rigged stunt vehicle.
"Death Proof" abides by the expectations of its genre for its first half, following Mike as he hunts his prey, not by stalking them under the cover of night but by schmoozing them up at a bar and cunningly striking when their defenses are down (but their blood-alcohol levels are up). It's only in its second half that the film stealthily -- and swiftly -- evolves into a women's empowerment story by way of a revenge thriller,...

For cinephiles who came of moviegoing age during the 1970s and/or '80s, there is a shortlist of movie stars that, if you were talented and fortunate enough to become a filmmaker of some renown, you'd give anything to direct. And if you grew up with a hankering for horror and science-fiction flicks, the name Kurt Russell was probably at or near the top of that list.
Russell wasn't always one of the cool kids. In fact, he was a literally uncool kid for Disney as the teenage star of family comedies like "The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes." Indeed, no one viewed Russell as a grown-up actor until he impressed in the title role of Carpenter's 1979 TV movie "Elvis." This did the trick. Two years later, Russell slipped under the scaly skin of laconic scoundrel Snake Plissken in Carpenter's dystopian actioner "Escape from New York." Then he went the...

Although Quentin Tarantino has long been a living legend, his legacy is not limited to his work as a director.
There are many films in which Tarantino was involved as a writer or producer, and his style is evident in each of them.
1. True Romance, 1993
In the early 1990s, when Tarantino was making his way in Hollywood, he wrote two scripts with the idea that selling one would give him the money to bring the other to the screen. Suddenly, it was clear that both scripts had equal sales potential, and Tarantino had to choose which one to save for himself.
He chose the one called Reservoir Dogs — and he was right. The second script fell into the hands of Tony Scott, who turned it into a romantic action movie.
The wild tale of love between two misfits — comic book salesman Clarence and call girl Alabama — was a box office flop,...

How much money do you need to make a good movie? This question seems to be an eternal one for filmmakers, but at the same time some of them are successful in creating quite inexpensive masterpieces.
Here are 5 low-budget flicks that became big hits, loved by Redditors.
1. The Blair Witch Project - $200,000–750,000 vs $248.6 million
First comes a cultish horror with a budget estimated under $1 million that still managed to rake in more than 200x its cost. The story about college filmmakers on their way to make a movie about a local myth is indeed a must-watch that is worth such a hype.
2. Napoleon Dynamite (2004) - $400,000 vs $46.1 million
You probably didn't know that one of the most iconic coming-of-age comedies was created on a tight budget. The film’s lead, Jon Heder, who portrayed the titular nerdy high-school student, was initially only paid $1,000 for his work on this hit.

For members of Gen Z and Gen Alpha, the popularity of comic book movies, sci-fi/fantasy franchises, and other attendant IP has always been the norm, while for us in the Gen X or millennial generations, it's been a roller coaster of emotions. There was the rising exhilaration of seeing characters and material long regarded as merely silly or lesser-than suddenly legitimized in a big way, followed by the over-the-hill period we're living through right now, in which many feel groggily hungover by the chokehold that comic book movies and cinematic universes have had on populist cinema for the last several years.

Back in the mid-1990s, Robert Rodriguez wrote the screenplay for a Predator sequel that would be titled Predators… but the studio decided to put that one on the shelf for fifteen years before circling back to Rodriguez and giving him the chance to bring Predators to the screen. Rodriguez produced the movie and hired Alex Litvak and Michael Finch to rework his old script. The search for a director came down to two contenders: Control, Vacancy, and Armored director Nimród Antal and Dog Soldiers, The Descent, and Doomsday director Neil Marshall. The job ended up going to Antal, but more than a decade later, Marshall is still hoping he’ll get his chance to make a Predator movie someday.
Marshall was asked about being in the running for Predators while speaking with Inverse, and he said, “As far as I’m aware, I got down to the last two directors.

There are a few household names in comics. Frank Miller is one of those names. Through his grim film-noirish comic book stories using characters like Batman and Daredevil and original works like Sin City and 300, Miller has etched his way into the hearts and minds of comic book fans for decades.
The film Frank Miller: American Genius premieres on June 10 with a one-night-only theatrical screening in Los Angeles that will screen simultaneously in Cinemark theaters nationwide. The documentary by Silenn Thomas, CEO of the artist’s production company Frank Miller Ink, the film explores Miller’s incredibly successful multimedia career. And the dark side, too.
The heavy list of people interviewed for the film ranges from film directors like Zack Snyder and Robert Rodriguez to comic legends like Jim Lee, Neal Adams, and Jim Shooter. Miller’s unique storytelling and drawings have made him a heavyweight in the comic...

Hostel is in the works for the small screen. Paul Giamatti is attached to star in a television series based on Eli Roth’s horror franchise, from Roth, Chris Briggs, Mike Fleiss, all of whom worked on the films, and Fifth Season, Deadline has confirmed.
The show is currently in development and does not yet have a network or streamer attached, but it’s described as an “elevated thriller with Roth’s trademark kills” and a modern reinvention of the horror franchise.
No details yet, but Giamatti is set to play a key role. Roth will direct and write with Briggs, and Roth, Briggs and Fleiss will executive produce.
The original film franchise, first released in 2006, followed three backpackers headed to a Slovak city that promised to meet their hedonistic expectations, with no idea of the hell that awaited them. The first two films were written and directed by Eli Roth and produced by Roth,...

If you have Hulu (or Disney Star in Canada), you might have noticed that Danny Boyle’s 28 Days Later is no longer available. Indeed, Disney lost the rights to the independently financed original film, with them now only owning the rights to the Searchlight-financed sequel, 28 Weeks Later. That’s why you can’t find it on streaming sites and why the Blu-ray Disc is out of print. Sony now owns the rights to the film, with it being part of the package they acquired when they bought the rights to finance the upcoming Danny Boyle/ Alex Garland sequel, 28 Years Later. So, presumably, Sony will be reissuing the film in the near future, and there’s a chance that when they do, it’ll look much better than it ever did before. But why?
