When Tim Miller's superhero film "Deadpool" was released in 2016, it felt like a breath of fresh air. The Marvel Cinematic Universe was still standing astride the Earth like a mighty colossus, releasing gigantic hit films every few months. The MCU dominated the conversation like no other series of blockbusters before, generating so much online discourse that entire subgenres of journalism sprung up it its shadow. And the McU's fans were passionately defensive, often accusing any naysayers or critics of hating fun and being ignorant to what great cinema looked like.
When "Deadpool" came out, the MCU was coming off "Avengers: Age of Ultron" and "Ant-Man," and was gearing up for "Captain America: Civil War." The MCU was in its stride. "Deadpool" sought to stick out his foot and trip the genre, hoping to cause a stumble. "Deadpool" was a crass, ultra-violent, obscenity-laced R-rated comedy which featured scenes of the...

Johnny Depp is continuing to plot his comeback to mainstream Hollywood following his defamation battle with Amber Heard. He returned to the big screen in the French-language period drama ‘Jeanne Du Barry,’ where he played King Louis Xv, produced and directed by Maïwen, who also starred in the movie as King Louis Xv’s lover.
This time, while we won’t be seeing his face, we will indeed be hearing his voice, even if we don’t understand all or half of what it’s saying.

Orlando Bloom has praised Johnny Depp for being totally immersed in the role of ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’s’ Captain Jack Sparrow. A producer on the franchise has said that the work Depp did on the franchise is beautiful, and if a proper story came along, the studio knows where to find its captain.
Now franchise star Geoffrey Rush – Captain Hector Barbossa for the uninitiated – is sharing his thoughts on kicking off another ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ franchise without Johnny Depp.
Johnny Depp’s – Commitment To Captain Jack Sparrow Praised By Co-star
It’s not going to be easy to find a captain that carries a torch to the work already done by Depp, if you ask Rush.
“Whoever takes over from Johnny, I don’t know what’s gonna happen there,” Rush told Collider.

For too long, fans of the Pirates of the Caribbean series have been parched of thirst and unable to quench it. And while that’s a pretty complicated matter, one thing is for sure: Captain Hector Barbossa is no more. Unless, of course, Disney finds a way to bring him back…But what about Johnny Depp? Barbossa himself, Geoffrey Rush, has taken the helm to comment on both and the future of Pirates.
Speaking with Collider, Geoffrey Rush said that even though Barbossa sacrificed himself in 2017’s Dead Men Tell No Tales, it’s not out of the realm of possibility that he returns if a sixth Pirates entry does in fact get made. “I did come up with a good idea, which is classically based. Hamlet’s father comes back as a ghost, and I just said, ‘I can come back…’” Considering the number of ghosts who show up,...

As Disney plans a reboot of the “Pirates of the Caribbean” films, there’s a big question – will Johnny Depp’s iconic Captain Jack Sparrow return? Geoffrey Rush, who played Captain Hector Barbossa, voiced skepticism in a recent interview.
Rush says whoever replaces Depp has huge shoes to fill. He compared Jack Sparrow’s impact to Robert Newton’s Long John Silver character, adding Depp’s performance left a huge cultural mark. Rush also shared how Depp drew from rock stars like Keith Richards to create Sparrow’s unique swagger.
The “Pirates” movies have made over $4.5 billion total since 2003. But the last one in 2017 didn’t do as well. Disney wants a new sixth film and a Margot Robbie spin-off too. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer even said he wants Depp involved if it was up to him.

Mark Cousins’ unconventional portrait of an artist “A Sudden Glimpse to Deeper Things” took top honors at this year’s Karlovy Vary Film Festival, snagging the fest’s iconic Crystal Globe alongside a cash prize of $25K to split by the Scottish-Irish filmmaker and his producing partners.
Featuring the voice work of Tilda Swinton, the award-winning doc follows the life and career of artist Wilhelmina Barns-Graham, a lesser-known master of modern art whose outlook and output underwent a profound spiritual, aesthetic and ideological transformation once the painter had a moment of epiphany atop Switzerland’s Grindelwald glacier in 1949.
The climbing expedition left Barns-Graham with a new set of obsessions and forms of expression – giving her life a new meaning.
Before claiming the Jury Prize, Lilja Ingolfsdottir’s domestic drama “Loveable” also took acting honors for star Helga Guren as well as parallel awards from the Ecumenical Jury, the Europa Cinema Label,...

Cousins said the film’s subject, painter Wilhelmina Barns-Graham, “lived completely, truly and utterly – let’s try to do that.”
Norwegian divorce story “Loveable” won the Crystal Globe jury prize, as well as three other awards categories, taking home the Fipresci, ecumenical and Europa Cinemas Label prizes with its nuanced look at a woman morphing into a new life.
Director Lilja Ingolfsdottir scored big with her first feature-length drama with “Loveable,” telling the audience at the Hotel Thermal Grand Hall the story helped her “find barriers we have built against connections.”

The 58th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (June 28 – July 6) came to a close this evening with an awards ceremony that saw Mark Cousins’ essay film A Sudden Glimpse to Deeper Things win the main prize in the festival’s Crystal Globe competition. Narrated by Tilda Swinton and — in Cousins’ familiar, idiosyncratic style, exploring themes of gender, climate change and creativity — the UK film offers a creative biography of Scottish artist Wilhelmina Barns-Graham (1912-2004). Coming what most have been a close second to take the Jury Prize — and Best Actress Award for its star, Helga Guren — was Norway’s acclaimed divorce drama Loveable, directed by Lilja Ingolfsdottir.

There was no rain after a morning drizzle. Instead, German-Spanish star Daniel Brühl (Becoming Karl Lagerfeld, All Quiet on the Western Front) was showered with love, appreciation and much applause as he arrived on the red carpet at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (Kviff) on Thursday afternoon. The love fest continued inside when he received the Kviff President’s Award in the jam-packed Grand Hall of the Hotel Thermal, which serves as the fest’s headquarters, and presented his 2021 directorial debut Next Door.
After charming the audience with a Czech thank you, followed by a German thank you, and an English thank you “from the bottom of my heart,” Brühl told the people in attendance: “This is the most beautiful statuette. It’s more beautiful than the Oscar.” The crowd erupted into loud applause and wild cheers.

Even Hollywood’s biggest stars may sometimes need to get away from Tinseltown and all that talk about box office declines, streaming challenges, and the threats of TikTok and generative AI.

In fact, Kviff has over the years often turned out not to only be a film fest, but also a big love fest for famous faces.

Christos Nikou’s sophomore feature Fingernails, starring Riz Ahmed and Jessie Buckley, will screen as the closing film for the 58th edition of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (Kviff) in early July.
Organizers of the film fest in the picturesque Czech spa town unveiled the news Wednesday. “The tender and idiosyncratic romance co-produced by Cate Blanchett” features “disarming performances by Jesse Buckley and Riz Ahmed,” fest organizers said, describing the movie as an “unusual romance.”
The movie, Nikou’s English-language debut, is about a new technology that has been embraced by a growing number of couples. Promising “no more uncertainty” and “no more divorce,” the simple but physically daunting test enables people to be sure they have indeed found a true love connection – the only requirement: the removal of one fingernail from each person.

To date, there are 24 distinguished individuals (living and deceased) who have won competitive Oscar, Emmy and Tony Awards. The Triple Crown of Acting, as it’s known — see the list below. And there’s no horsing around.
Glenda Jackson became the most recent person to join the club when she received the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play in for “Three Tall Women” in 2018.
While the recent 77th Tony Awards didn’t produce another Triple Crown Acting champion (there was no Tony-less Oscar and Emmy winner in contention), it is possible that some unsuspecting thespian was put on course to becoming the 25th name on the list above. And so the awards plot thickens.

I’ll appropriately start with Sarah Paulson, who accepted the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play for “Appropriate.” (It marked her first Tony nomination.

Jeff Daniels is always a reliably excellent performer whether its in comedy or drama, TV or film, and the veteran actor has turned in another masterclass performance in Netflix’s “A Man in Full.”
Adapted from Tom Wolfe‘s novel of the same name and created by “Big Little Lies” helmer David E. Kelley, “A Man in Full” follows Daniels as real estate mogul Charlie Croker, who tries to protect his empire and legacy from crumbling when he falls into sudden bankruptcy. Daniels dominated the screen here, chewing scenery, spitting it out with venom, and then re-chewing the scenery some more. Whatever you may think of the show, Daniels is never anything less than ferociously good, as noted by critics.
Nick Schager (The Daily Beast) wrote that the show “struts about with swaggering ferocity, led by Jeff Daniels’ full-bodied performance as a blustery, bloviating capitalist predator… ego is both a...

“Memoir of a Snail,” directed by Oscar winner Adam Elliot – and voiced by “Succession” star Sarah Snook – has debuted a teaser ahead of its premiere at Annecy.
The film is set as the opening title of the Melbourne International Film Festival in August and will have its Australian commercial release, via Madman, from Oct. 17.
In the film, little Grace Puddle is separated from her twin brother Gilbert following their parents’ deaths. Things only get worse from there, she later admits to a garden snail named Sylvia – the only creature interested in her tragic story.
“I gravitate towards the underdog. People who are perceived as different, marginalized. I am not interested in heroes. It’s probably because I am ultimately making films about myself. I really empathize and identify with my characters,” the director told Variety.
“The truth is, they are all based on real people: they just happen to be my family and friends.

Image Source: Amazon It’s amazing to think that Pixar’s beloved film Finding Nemo is now two decades old. This award-winning animated gem has truly become a classic, in the history of Walt Disney and Pixar. The stellar voice cast of the film included Albert Brooks, Brad Garrett, Elizabeth Perkins, Stephen Root, Allison Janney and Geoffrey Rush. One standout performance was Willem Dafoe’s portrayal of the antagonist character. Voice acting is a very difficult procedure, especially for animated movies like Finding Nemo. It can take years to finish, as many people may already be aware. When the finished product is seen by the public, all of the hard work pays off. For Dafoe being part of Finding Nemo was a great experience. Upon the film’s release he shared his thoughts on what it meant to him. (Click on the media bar below to hear Willem Dafoe) https://www.

While the Pirates of the Caribbean film series became an iconic franchise thanks to the maverick genius of Johnny Depp, veteran actor Geoffrey Rush was equally instrumental in its blockbuster status. The Oscar winner who starred as the wily Captain Hector Barbossa in the 5 films, fed off Depp’s Jack Sparrow perfectly to create a brilliant chemistry.

While the franchise started losing its appeal as time passed, Disney still found massive success with its Pirates of the Caribbean movies.
Johnny Depp deserves much of the credit for that, but Amber Heard's allegations of domestic violence and a series of messy court battles led to Disney scrapping plans for a sixth movie. Depp's Hollywood career was put on hold and the studio went back to the drawing board with the franchise.
It's unclear exactly who is developing the next iteration, though the expectation is that the spotlight will shift to another character in place of the iconic Captain Jack Sparrow.
Talking to Et Online, Pirates of the Caribbean producer Jerry Bruckheimer made it clear that, he at least, is willing to bring Depp back into the fold.
"If it was up to me, of course. I love having Depp," he said. "He's a great actor and good friend.

Nowadays, in the era of the prominent box office domination of the superhero movie franchises, made by Marvel, DC and other studios, it’s hard to amaze the audience with a movie following a person with supernatural abilities. The subgenre starts to repeat itself and to use the same tropes in every subsequent movie again and again.
Back in 1999, there was a star-studded comedy that made fun of the typical superhero movies long before the Avengers fever and even before Prime Video’s The Boys series, also appearing to be a satire to the MCU and other films about courageous supermen.
Its plot focuses on the tragedy happening in the fictional Champion City: it lost its main defender, a superhero named Captain Amazing. He was relentlessly captured by the villain Casanova Frankenstein, and it leaves the town in a vulnerable position.

“Slow Horses” star Gary Oldman is the frontrunner to win Best Drama Actor at the upcoming Emmys. Oldman earned his first and only Oscar six years ago for his portrayal of World War II-era British prime minister Winston Churchill in “Darkest Hour.” That win was sandwiched between two other lead bids for “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy” (2012) and “Mank” (2021). His sole Emmy nomination to date came in 2001 for his guest appearance in the two-part seventh season finale of “Friends”; he lost to Derek Jacobi (“Frasier”).
On Apple TV+’s “Slow Horses,” which is based on a series of novels by Mick Herron, Oldman plays Jackson Lamb, a particularly uncouth MI5 officer saddled with the responsibility of supervising a group of service rejects. This constitutes his very first regular role on a continuing series and his first live action TV performance at all in over two decades.

Fred Schepisi is set to direct Israel-based thriller “The Dimona Affair,” Variety has learned exclusively.
The project is based on the story of a whistleblower who claimed Israel was building a nuclear weapons program. (The country has always denied it has nuclear weapons).

He was then reportedly lured to Rome by a female Israeli secret service agent in a honeytrap operation where he was kidnapped and repatriated to Israel. Vanunu eventually stood trial for espionage and treason before being convicted and jailed.

Tobias Menzies has become one of our most reliably excellent actors of late. Classically trained, he had an extensive theatre career in his native England during the noughties and early 2010s before he rose to prominence with roles in “Game of Thrones” and “Outlander.”
Menzies’ profile then increased further thanks to his lauded portrayal of Prince Phillip in “The Crown” and his stock has again risen thanks to his role as another major historical figure in Apple TV’s “Manhunt.” The acclaimed limited series follows the death of President Abraham Lincoln (played by Hamish Linklater) and the subsequent 12-day manhunt for assassin John Wilkes Booth (Anthony Boyle).
Menzies stars as Edwin Stanton, the Secretary of State and personal friend of Lincoln who headed up the hunt for Booth. Menzies proves himself capable of carrying this compelling show entirely on his own. His complex, gruff portrayal of Stanton is what makes the series soar,...

You may recall that this January, Sir Elton John became the 19th person ever to win the coveted Egot by claiming his first Emmy. But what you may be less familiar with is the fact that Emma Stone can become just the 20th actress (and the 25th entertainer overall) to claim an Eggocc if she triumphs in the race for the Best Drama Actress prize at this year’s Emmy Awards for her performance in the Paramount+/Showtime series “The Curse.” Too, Robert Downey Jr. is poised to be only the sixth actor to claim an Eggocc should he take home the Emmy prize in September for Best Movie/Limited Series Supporting Actor for his work in the HBO limited series “The Sympathizer.”
What is an Eggocc, you ask? Why, it’s Emmy, Golden Globe, Oscar and Critics Choice statuettes, of course. And as just alluded to, winning all four...

Whether you love or hate them, remakes have been around for a long time, and they’re not slowing down anytime soon. An update on The Crow is set to arrive this summer, with Hollywood’s version of Speak No Evil not far behind, just as two upcoming examples.
While not all remakes can hold a candle to the original, there’s been no shortage of fantastic movies that reworked genre favorites in thrilling new ways. Some of which even managed to eclipse the original classics, like 1986’s The Fly or 1982’s The Thing.
This week’s streaming picks are dedicated to horror remakes that set themselves apart from the source material, either through expanded storytelling or heightened, visceral horror.
Here’s where you can stream them this week.

Since the inception of the Academy Awards, the U.S.-based organization behind them has always strived to honor worldwide film achievements. Their extensive roster of competitive acting winners alone consists of artists from 30 unique countries, three of which first gained representation during the 2020s. The last full decade’s worth of triumphant performers hail from eight countries, while 42.1% of the individual actors nominated during that time originate from outside of America.
The academy’s history of recognizing acting talent on a global scale dates all the way back to the inaugural Oscars ceremony in 1929, when Swiss-born Emil Jannings (who was of German and American parentage) won Best Actor for his work in both “The Last Command” and “The Way of All Flesh.” Over the next three years, the Best Actress prize was exclusively awarded to Canadians: Mary Pickford (“Coquette”), Norma Shearer (“The Divorcee”), and Marie Dressler (“Min and Bill...

David Seidler, the London-born playwright and screenwriter best known for “The King’s Speech,” has died while on a fly-fishing vacation in New Zealand, as per a report in The Guardian. His spokesperson said he was in the location he most revered, doing the activity he most loved when he passed: “It is exactly as he would have scripted it.” The winner of the Academy Award and BAFTA for Best Original Screenplay for the Colin Firth-led film was 86 years old.
Seidler’s career began in Australian television in the late 1960s. He came to the United States in the early 1980s, working for the soap opera “Another World,” then writing television movies like “Malice in Wonderland,” something of an early version of the series “Feud” as it concerned Hedda Hopper and Louella Parsons starring Jane Alexander and Elizabeth Taylor. He also wrote “Onassis: The Richest Man in the World” starring...

David Seidler, the Academy Award-winning writer of the 2010 film “The King’s Speech,” died on Saturday. No cause of death was given. He was 86 years old.
Seidler’s film took home both Best Original Screenplay and several other Academy Awards at the 2011 ceremony, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor. The movie told the story of King George VI (Colin Firth), who battled a stutter, and his relationship with speech therapist Lionel Logue (Geoffrey Rush).
Telling the story of George VI was a longtime dream of Seidler’s because he also grew up with a stutter. As relayed by the Stuttering Foundation, Seidler contended with the condition from his third birthday until the age of 16. He explained, “I had huge trouble with the ‘H’ sound, so when the telephone rang, I would break into a cold sweat, because I couldn’t say ‘hello.'”
