George Miller gets biblical in the opening of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, the fifth installment in his postapocalyptic action franchise. The young Furiosa (Alyla Browne) picks a ripe piece of fruit from a tree growing at the edge of a verdant forest. “We’ve come too far,” says her companion, emphasizing the forbidden nature of the act with the perfect amount of allegorical on-the-noseness. What happens next certainly has the aura of divine punishment, as Furiosa is whisked away from her home (“the Green Place” first mentioned in Mad Max: Fury Road) by a masked group of motor bikers.
She’s no helpless waif, mind you, and with her steadfast mother, Mary Jo Bassa (Charlee Fraser), in hot pursuit, Furiosa gives as good as any of the lecherous brutes tormenting her. But the fates, not to mention the narrative dictates of an origin story with an already fixed outcome,...

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga has finally announced its streaming debut on Max, scheduled for August 16. Directed by George Miller, this new installment delves into the origin story of Imperator Furiosa. Previously played by Charlize Theron, Anya Taylor-Joy steps into the role for this film, released in May. Despite strong critical reviews, with Rotten Tomatoes critic Erik Davies calling the movie powerhouse action filmmaking at its absolute best, Furiosa fell short at the box office, grossing only $172 million worldwide. The movie follows Furiosa’s abduction from the Green Place of Many Mothers and her survival in a brutal world...

Furiosa is finally making her way home. On August 16th, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, the 2024 prequel from visionary director George Miller, will be streaming on Max. For fans of physical media, the film’s 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray release is set for August 13th. It’s now available for pre-order via Amazon.
Set in the dystopian world of the Mad Max franchise, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga stars Anya Taylor-Joy as Furiosa, a role for which Charlize Theron earned significant critical acclaim in the 2015 installment. Taylor-Joy appears in the film alongside Chris Hemsworth, who plays an unhinged foe known as the Warlord Dementus.

Director George Miller decided to continue the Mad Max franchise with the Mad Max: Fury Road prequel Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga… and while the movie got good reviews (like the 9/10 review from JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray), the worldwide box office numbers just barely passed the $168 million budget, so the Furiosa story was not something a lot of movie-goers were exceptionally eager to see on the big screen. It has been on VOD for a while now, and now we know when it’s going to start streaming: SuperHeroHype reports that Furiosa will be available to watch on the Max streaming service as of August 16th.
Directed by Miller from a screenplay he wrote with Nico Lathouris, Furiosa has the following synopsis: As the world fell, young Furiosa is snatched from the Green Place of Many Mothers and falls into the hands of a great Biker Horde led by the Warlord Dementus.

Fans of the dystopian action franchise Mad Max can now see the origins of one of its most compelling characters. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga began streaming August 16 on Max, the online streaming service.
The film tells the backstory of Imperator Furiosa, played by Anya Taylor-Joy. In the 2015 film Mad Max: Fury Road, Charlize Theron memorably portrayed Furiosa as a tough, no-nonsense warrior. This prequel delves into Furiosa’s life before the events of Fury Road, showing what experiences turned her into such a fierce leader.
When it premiered in movie theaters in May, Furiosa received positive reviews. Critics praised its spectacular visuals recreating the apocalyptic wasteland setting. However, it only grossed $172 million worldwide against a $168 million budget. This disappointing financial performance has cast doubt on plans for future films in the Mad Max franchise.

An exhausted Ryan Reynolds was overwhelmed when the opening-day grosses started pouring in on July 26 for Deadpool & Wolverine, the third entry in his audacious superhero series. By July 27, the impossible was within reach: The Marvel Studios pic was going to cross $200 million in its domestic debut, something no one thought possible for an R-rated film. The final number came in at a stunning $211 million, the sixth-biggest opening of all time and $79 million ahead of the previous R-rated record-holder, 2016’s Deadpool.
“I’ve been in some form of writing, producing, performing, editing and marketing of Deadpool & Wolverine for three years. I’d say it’s hard work — but it’s closer to obsession,” Reynolds told The Hollywood Reporter upon returning from a whirlwind global publicity tour with his besties, co-star Hugh Jackman and director Shawn Levy.

Nearly ten years after director George Miller returned to the post-apocalyptic wasteland and redefined the action genre with Mad Max: Fury Road, the Australian auteur returned to replace Charlize Theron with Anya Taylor Joy to tell the origin story of the warrior who helped Mad Max cross that fury road in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. And regardless of how underwhelming its box office may be, this high octane prequel will surely stand the test of time alongside the rest of the Mad Max saga, certainly more so than another follow-up from Warner Bros. to a car racing franchise way back in 1984, when the late great Burt Reynolds bid farewell to the formula comedy genre that made him a superstar alongside an all-star cast (Jackie Chan! Frank Sinatra! Tony Danza!) with Cannonball Run II.

For more than 15 years studios have done their best to avoid releasing their new movies on the second weekend of a Marvel movie. This weekend we learned the reason why. Read on for the weekend box office report.
As expected, Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman‘s “Deadpool and Wolverine” won its second weekend in a row, topping the box office with an estimated $97 million, down 54% from its record-setting opening weekend. Not only did “Deadpool and Wolverine” cross the $300 million milestone domestically this past weekend, but with $395.6 million grossed in North America, it’s only a day away from hitting the $400 million benchmark, so the race is on to see if it can catch up to Pixar’s “Inside Out 2.”
Globally, the movie has passed the $800 million mark, adding another $110.5 million overseas this weekend for an international total of $428.5 million. With $824.1 million global, it has already passed the worldwide grosses...

As we progress into 2024, the box office situation remains disappointing. While Inside Out 2 made a significant impact and helped revive the box office this summer, and Deadpool & Wolverine continued that momentum, the overall performance is still lackluster.
Earlier this year, we reported that the box office was experiencing one of its worst years in recent history. Although several potential hits were on the horizon, the improvement didn’t begin until Inside Out 2 debuted, becoming the first—and so far only—film of the year to surpass $1 billion globally.
In a recent report, Variety confirms that despite some improvements, the situation remains bleak. While revenue is increasing, it falls far short of the levels seen in recent years, indicating that overall conditions are still not improving.
If you recall from our previous reports, George Miller’s Furiosa was expected to be a major box office hit following Dune: Part 2.

We’re deep into 2024 territory as of the time of writing, but the situation at the 2024 box office is not really improving. We knew that Inside Out 2 did an amazing job and that it basically saved the box office this summer, and Deadpool & Wolverine continued on that same high note, but despite these two movies, the overall situation is still not well.
Earlier this year, we reported that the box office was the worst one in years, and despite a lot of potential hits coming in, the situation had not started to improve until Inside Out 2 came out, becoming the first and so far only film of the year to reach $1 billion worldwide.

To say Hideo Kojima is a titan in the gaming industry would be an understatement. Having pioneered the stealth action genre with the Metal Gear series, Kojima has influenced several titles with his work and continues to create waves with new projects.
While Kojima may no longer be able to create games under the Metal Gear Solid moniker, he speaks fondly of his time with the franchise. In particular, he holds one person at the company in high regard for his encouragement in releasing the second game in the series.

Having just starred in George Miller's action epic Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga and with Transformers One already well on its way, Aussie actor Chris Hemsworth could be forgiven for taking a moment to catch his breath over the summer. But before we've even had chance to see his take on Optimus Prime in Josh Cooley's Autobot origin story, the Thor star has already put another buzzy project in his pipeline. Per Deadline's reporting, Apple Original Films has won a hotly contested bid for The Corsair Code, an original sci-fi movie set to be led by Hemsworth.
Based on a short story by The Adam Project scribe Jonathan Tropper, who will also pen the screenplay for this one, plot details about The Corsair Code are closely guarded at present. For now, all we actually know about it is that it's being described as a "high-octane, sci-fi mystery adventure.

Junkie Xl has become one of the movie business’s most in-demand musical talents. In a recent chat, the composer opened up about scoring blockbusters like Furiosa and the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog 3.
Holkenborg got his start assisting Hans Zimmer on films like Man of Steel. This led to a fruitful partnership with Zack Snyder on movies like the Snyder Cut and Rebel Moon.
He divulged details about returning to the Mad Max world for the Furiosa prequel. Director George Miller told him to disregard the franchise’s past scores – “That was then. I want something new.” Junkie respected Miller’s unique, detail-oriented directing style, saying his sense of minutiae is “mind-boggling.”
In Furiosa, Junkie took on an expanded role by helping with the final sound mix. This gave him control over marrying his music into the film’s overall soundscape. He called it “liberating” and a career highlight.

Film critic Andrew Sarris changed his profession forever when he introduced, to English-speaking cinephiles at least, the concept of “auteur theory.” The general conceit is that some rarified directors are so gifted, or commanding, in their control over the process of film production that they alone can give a film a “personal or unique stamp.” They are the ones who become the author of the movie you’re watching. If anyone. It’s a seductive theory which encourages the critic to look for points of narrative, visual, or thematic similarity between a filmmaker’s work. The more ideas or images that rhyme, the potentially more impressive the auteur’s command over the medium becomes.
However, while it is hard to dispute the existence of auteurs, the concept at times devalues the contributions of a film’s many other collaborators—especially if they’re, say, editors, production designers, or cinematographers a...

Lee Isaac Chung is barely settled in a café chair parked on this South Pasadena sidewalk when he begins our conversation with the question he’s most expecting: “So how did I go from Minari to this?”
He laughs about it now, but this late June meeting is on the eve of a global Twisters media tour during which he’ll likely be asked this more times than he can count. Box office tracking is promising ahead of the July 18 domestic release. Test screenings have gone well. Golden boy Glen Powell’s smile is all over the trailer. And Universal Pictures, the film’s studio, is hardly the only conglomerate in town holding its breath in hopes that this spiritual sequel to a 1996 mega-hit will put bodies in theaters at home and abroad. Yet its success is ultimately riding on the unassuming 45-year-old indie filmmaker — one who not long ago...

Director George Miller decided to continue the Mad Max franchise with the Mad Max: Fury Road prequel Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga… but to tell the story, he had to recast the role of Furiosa. While the character was played by Charlize Theron, who wanted to return for Furiosa, in Fury Road, Miller felt de-aging technology isn’t convincing enough just yet for Theron to play a much younger version of the character, so he cast Anya Taylor-Joy in the lead role for Furiosa. Theron has said that being left out of Furiosa was “a little heartbreaking” – but that hasn’t kept her from seeing or praising the finished film.
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Theron confirmed that she has seen Furiosa and, “It’s amazing, it’s a beautiful film.“
Unfortunately, Theron and Taylor-Joy still haven’t had an opportunity to meet up and discuss their experiences playing the same character.

When “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” was first announced, there was a bit of controversy because filmmaker George Miller decided to recast the lead role instead of working some movie magic to allow for Charlize Theron to return years later. According to Miller, he didn’t believe de-aging techniques would fully work for what he wanted, and instead, he brought in Anya Taylor-Joy. There were some interviews where it seemed like Theron was a bit hurt by that.

Eddie Murphy has a lot of standalone movies that are great like Trading Places, Harlem Nights, and the more recent Dolomite is my Name, but he’s also been a bit of franchise gold in the past. Obviously, Beverly Hills Cop is the biggest and most recent example, but he’s also been part of 2 48 Hours movies, a couple Nutty Professor flicks, a couple Doctor Dolittle movies and is an integral part of the mega franchise that is Shrek. While we unfortunately have to call Coming to America a franchise now after that abysmal rehash that Amazon dropped on us, there is another movie and character that I actually wouldn’t mind being brought back and has potential, under the right writer and director combo, to be a fun time and maybe even fix some of the mistakes from its predecessor. While Pluto Nash and Norbit are all time stinkers...

Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth starred in the fifth film of George Miller’s Mad Max franchise, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. The film focuses on the early life of Imperator Furiosa who was played by Charlize Theron in Mad Max: Fury Road. The prequel is set about 15 to 20 years before the events of Fury Road and tells the story of how Furiosa became an Imperator.

Charlize Theron has dubbed 'Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga' a "beautiful film" and praised Anya Taylor-Joy.The 48-year-old actress played Imperator Furiosa in 2015's 'Mad Max: Fury Road' and she and the 28-year-old actress, who played a younger version of her character in the latest movie in George Miller's money-spinning post-apocalyptic franchise, released earlier this year, are eager to meet up to "connect" over the role. She told The Hollywood Reporter of the fifth instalment in the series: "It's amazing, it's a beautiful film."Asked if she's discussed it with Anya yet, she replied: "No, we've really been trying to connect."It's been one of those – we can actually make a comedy out of it. We keep running into each other and in places when we don't have time to really talk to each other, so we're constantly like, 'Oh my god, Ok, let's get together!

One actor who came close to comic book movie stardom is Santiago Cabrera. In a recent Hollywood Reporter interview, he opened up about almost playing Aquaman back in 2007. Cabrera – best known from TV’s Heroes – said he officially got the part when George Miller was going to direct Justice League: Mortal.
Miller, the genius behind Mad Max, had cast Cabrera as Aquaman and the movie was gearing up to shoot down in Australia. Cabrera flew all the way there just to meet Miller and try on his Aquaman costume. “It felt so real in that moment,” he reflected. But things change fast in Hollywood. Right as filming was about to start, the writer’s strike hit and stopped the whole project in its tracks.

Many potentially great superhero movies have failed to materialise over the years, though George Miller's Justice League: Mortal remains among the most intriguing.
Only bits and pieces have ever been revealed about the project (an early version of the screenplay is floating around online if you search hard enough), including the fact the Mad Max director considered shooting it completely in motion capture, similar to Beowulf.
Unfortunately, Justice League: Mortal ended up being a victim of the 2007/2008 writer's strike, though it got far enough along to assemble an impressive cast of young actors. The idea was for them to grow into their roles over a series of movies that would have launched a shared DC Universe around the same time the MCU was created.

George Miller’s Furiosa is heading to DVD, Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray next month: more on the release here.
The best blockbuster of the summer? Well, George Millers fifth Mad Max film, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. That just about edges out The Fall Guy and the pleasantly surprising Twisters thus far, even though Furiosa failed to ignite at the box office. A direct prequel to the superb Mad Max: Fury Road, it wasn’t quite up to the standard of its forerunner, but still: nobody is making cinema like this.
On an IMAX screen, it was spectacular. At home? Some of the spectacle is inevitably going to be diminished. Still, the 4K disc promises to offer quite the home cinema workout, and we now know when the movie’s landing on DVD, Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray in the UK.
The date to note down is 12th August.

In 2010 the academy reintroduced the preferential ballot to decide the Best Picture winner. Over the ensuing 14 years, there has been a difference between the winners of that award and Best Director at six Academy Awards ceremonies. Prior to this such splits were fairly rare. Why the change? (Scroll down for our updated 2025 Oscar predictions for Best Director.)
At the Oscars, the winner of Best Picture is determined by a weighted ballot and the outcomes of the other 22 races, including Best Director, are decided by a popular vote. While voters simply select one nominee in those other races, when it comes to Best Picture they are asked to rank all the nominees. If one contender garners more than 50% of the first-place votes, it wins. If, however, no nominee crosses that threshold, the film with the fewest first-place votes is eliminated, with its ballots being reapportioned to the second-place pick. This process...

From Inside Out 2 To The Fall Guy, Here Are The Box Office Winners & Losers Of 2024(Photo Credit –YouTube)
This summer has shown us too many sequels, and while some of them have done incredibly well at the box office, others weren’t much celebrated in 2024. Despite ticket sales mounting for every blockbuster release, some sequels should have skipped theatres altogether, yes, we’re talking about the Mad Max franchise’s latest release, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. As much as fans expected the movie would live up to the earlier instalments, this chapter faced a treacherous road of failure. And yet, some films managed to pack in crowds, like Dune: Part Two, which performed well at the box office. As we wait for more sequels and new movies for the remaining 2024, let’s explore the winners and losers of 2024 at the box office till now.

George Miller’s high-octane prequel film “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” doesn’t have a ton in common with “Janet Planet,” the quiet, small-scale indie darling from playwright-turned-filmmaker Annie Baker. The films were only released a month apart, so any real influence is pretty unlikely. But according to Baker, she can still see a connection.
Speaking in a recent interview with Letterboxd, Baker was asked what fascinates her about mother/daughter stories. She denied that “Janet Planet” was influenced by any one story in particular. But she did just see “Furiosa,” which centers on a daughter losing her mother and trying to find her way back home, and Baker felt it definitely made an impression.
“I really liked ‘Furiosa,’” she said. “I can’t say it was an influence on ‘Janet Planet’ since I saw it last weekend, but I’m a big fan. I’m a big fan. ‘Furiosa,...

Almost nothing’s more important than a first impression. It’s a chance to put your best foot forward and leave a mark that folks will remember. But what if you don’t want them to remember your best foot? What if the impression intended to be left is of five toes digging into their backsides—and crawling under the skin?
It’s a funny idea, yet for more than a hundred years filmmakers have reached for exactly such visceral reactions to character introductions and entrances. They have striven to create sequences, movie moments, and performances that promise or forewarn of terrible sights to come, and characters who will never be forgotten. But not all villain intros are created equal, and in this list we humbly attempt to figure out some of the most infamous and revered.

Kevin Bacon is one of the biggest names in the entertainment industry. The actor started his career in the late 1970s, but he was shot in the spotlight in the mid-80s for his mesmerizing role in the renowned musical drama film Footloose. Since then, his stardom only grew as he continued to work in countless smash-hit blockbuster films.

From Hollow Man to X-Men: First Class, his career is full of iconic projects. As a result, he became a household name while working with names like Tom Cruise, Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, and many more. However, he had a fantasy of being a common man for once and wanted to experience how an ordinary person would spend their day.
Sadly, his dream soon culminated in a nightmare, as he described the simple yet massive drawbacks of not being a famous face.

Screenwriter Will Beall has talked about his unused script for Zack Snyder’s Justice League, and says it ‘owed a lot’ to Back To The Future II.
An entire book could be written about Zack Snyder’s Justice League, its difficult production, and its later re-edit. One of the first people to work on the 2017 superhero team-up film, though, was screenwriter Will Beall.
While 2013’s Man Of Steel was still in post-production, Beall was hired to write a script for Justice League – one that would ultimately go unused. David S Goyer was brought in as his replacement, and then Chris Terrio was later brought in to rewrite Goyer’s draft. Such is Hollywood.
Over a decade later, Beall has talked briefly about his involvement with the DC universe and his writing on Justice League in particular. He revealed that some of the ideas in his draft ended up in the finished movie,...

Australia has juiced its tax incentives for foreign, mostly Hollywood movies and TV series that shoot locally.
The federal government has passed legislation to boost the 16.5 percent location to 30 percent. The near doubling of the location offset will apply to local Australian movies but with a catch. Producers must have budgets of at least Aus$20 million (US$13.3 million) for production, or Aus$1.5 million (US$1 million) per hour for a TV series.
That means mostly foreign and especially Hollywood productions will benefit from the increased location offset for blockbuster projects as Australia looks to be more competitive with rival international jurisdictions and draw more projects and employment to its shores.
“This is fantastic news for the industry. The 30 percent location offset will provide certainty for international productions, supporting a stable pipeline of work for thousands of Australian screen workers and businesses and triggering investment into new industry capacity and capabilities,” Kate Marks,...

Note: This is not a ranking but rather a collection of 2024’s best movies so far.
10. Civil War — War Action
If you’ve ever wondered what may happen to our country if the divide worsens,
Alex Garland’s got you covered. Civil War revolves around exactly what you’ve already deduced from the title, following a group of army journalists on their journey across dystopian America as they try to reach the White House before the rebels.
9. Immaculate — Horror
For those of you starving for either good ol’ horrors or more Sydney Sweeney content, Michael Mohan released Immaculate. This movie is a story of a devout woman of faith who settles down in a seemingly peaceful new convent… Only to soon discover that its dark secrets leave no place for the faithful in a square mile.

George Miller’s Mad Max franchise is one of the most renowned action movie series of all time. The franchise’s recent addition, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, featuring Chris Hemsworth and Anya Taylor-Joy, serves as a prequel that adds to the popularity of the post-apocalyptic franchise. Despite having mixed reviews, fans had a great time watching the film on the big screen.

However, a fan has pointed out a new detail in the prequel that has been hiding in plain sight for all this time. This sinister secret exposed minute but remarkable contrasts between the two movies, illustrating the variations in what might have happened if Mel Gibson’s Mad Max had given in to his demons.

Driving into town in his beat-up Chevy Nova, Detroit detective Axel Foley (Eddie Murphy) still cannot believe the sights of Beverly Hills. He looks with bewilderment at high-fashion stores, a man dressed like a rockstar, and a blonde in a Corvette who offers a playful wink despite her boyfriend in the adjoining seat. Foley ends the sequence with his infectious chuckle, out of place in Beverly Hills but not out of ideas.
When Foley returns 40 years later for Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, he repeats the drive in yet another beat-up vehicle. He notices a new set of California absurdities, including a child shooting video for his Instagram modeling mother and a woman in full burka passing Tom Ford’s store. But nothing here shocks Foley these days. Nothing drives him to his classic chuckle. Instead he gives it all a knowing smile and drives on.
