Exclusive: Netflix has locked down rights to Hurt People, a legal thriller spec from Monarch creator Melissa London Hilfers, sources tell Deadline.
Details as to the plot of the film are under wraps. Written amid last year’s writer’s strike, it marks the rising scribe’s fifth feature spec sale to date. Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter are attached to produce for Berlanti/Schechter Films.
While Hilfers most recently created Monarch, a country music drama starring Susan Sarandon and Anna Friel for Fox TV, the writer is a self-professed justice junkie who more often than not, finds her way back to stories with the law at the center, as she has here. Previously a litigator at Cravath, Swaine and Moore Llp, she burst onto the scene with Undone, a legal thriller described as Gone Girl meets Primal Fear, which sold to Parkes + MacDonald and Black Bear in a competitive situation.

Based on Donald L. Miller’s book of the same name, and scripted by John Orloff, “Masters of the Air” follows the men of the 100th Bomb Group (the “Bloody Hundredth”) as they conduct perilous bombing raids over Nazi Germany and grapple with the frigid conditions, lack of oxygen and sheer terror of combat conducted at 25,000 feet in the air. Portraying the psychological and emotional price paid by these young men as they helped destroy the horror of Hitler’s Third Reich, is at the heart of “Masters of the Air.” Some were shot down and captured; some were wounded or killed. And some were lucky enough to make it home. Regardless of individual fate, a toll was exacted on them all.

Since the landing of the moon in 1969, there have been those who question the credibility of the famed event that gave America the winning title of the space race. Because most people will not make it into the stratosphere of space, questions, and conspiracies began to arise of whether or not the moon landing was real. As art will imitate life, it’s no surprise that the conspiracies have inspired a new film. ‘Fly Me to the Moon’ is the newest rom-com directed by Greg Berlanti from a screenplay by Rose Gilroy. The Apple Studios film hit theatres this week and opens up compelling questions about the true story of the moon landing. Mau’s You season 5 character is the guest star role of Detective Marquez.

As soon as learned that James Gunn's Superman was set to be released in theaters next summer, Superman & Lois' days being numbered was inevitable (particularly with The CW eager to move on from making pricey scripted dramas).
As a result, the upcoming fourth season will be the show's last. However, the stakes will be higher than ever in the 10-episode send-off because all signs point to us getting an adaptation of the Death and Resurrection of Superman.
Someone - or something - has to kill the Man of Steel, of course, and in this instance, the series will follow the comics by pitting the hero against Doomsday.
In a newly released extended sneak peek, Superman gives it his all in his latest battle with the seemingly unstoppable monster. Their clash rages through space (likely a cheaper option than creating a VFX Metropolis) and that allows the Kryptonian to unleash...

After its disappointing opening weekend at the box office, director Greg Berlanti's 1960s-set Space Race romantic comedy "Fly Me to the Moon" seems practically destined to become a forgotten film that will end up streaming on Apple TV+, where very few people will see it. That's a shame, because after a somewhat rocky opening few minutes, the movie settles into a nice groove and ends up becoming the type of charming, stylish throwback we're always saying we want to see more of. A huge part of the reason for the film's creative success is the casting of Channing Tatum and Scarlett Johansson in the lead roles; their chemistry is evident, and there's an old-fashioned playfulness to their banter. More importantly, though, the movie gives Johansson the opportunity to do something she's very rarely been allowed to do on screen: have fun.

Greg Berlanti aims high with ‘Fly Me to the Moon’, and the part romance, part period, part thriller, all high concept space-race picture for Apple Original Films lands him among the stars. Though pitched as a rom-com, arguably it’s more of an irreverent period comedy that asks questions more relevant than ever about media, authenticity, and truth… with a side of star-studded romance. Despite some rough edges, the great cast and characters, historical easter eggs, and beautiful visual design really bring this romp to the moon to life. The CW released a brief teaser for season 4 of Superman and Lois earlier this week, confirming that the final batch of episodes will indeed adapt the Death of Superman arc.
Now, the full trailer has hit (though it seems a longer version is still set to debut during Sdcc this weekend), and the footage indicates that the Man of Steel (Tyler Hoechlin) will be checking out pretty early on, leaving Lois (Elizabeth Tulloch) and their sons to pick up the pieces.
It looks like Jordan (Alex Garfin) will step up and attempt to fill the void left by his legendary father, but will he have what it takes to match wits with Lex Luthor (Michael Cudlitz)? The teaser also suggests that Doomsday might still be a threat, which would be a change from the comic, as Superman neutralizes his enemy before succumbing to his injuries.
Check out the trailer at the link below.

There's an idea about cinema that most filmmakers will tell you about what is going to happen in the film within the first ten minutes. Fly Me to the Moon, directed by Greg Berlanti, is a perfect example of that technique. In the first ten minutes, sly marketing manager Kelly Jones, played by Scarlett Johansson, tries to pitch business executives on buying a sports car with safety belts (it happens in the 60s when any safety measures were still treated as unnecessary accessories). With seatbelts you don't have to die driving a Mustang and your wife will luckily give you permission to buy something slightly cooler than a Plymouth. This definitely sounds appealing to buyers, and this is exactly what Fly Me to the Moon intends to do, too. It offers audiences a beautiful, smooth and entertaining ride without any risk. What could possibly go wrong...? But cinema without any...

The CW has released the first footage from the fourth and final season of Superman and Lois, and while it's far from the full teaser we were hoping for (that won't arrive until after DC's Sdcc panel), it does appear to confirm which iconic comic book storyline will be adapted for these last episodes.
Though this probably won't come as much of a surprise following the events of the season 3 finale and yesterday's poster highlighting the Man of Steel's tattered cape, it looks like the final season of the show will indeed take influence from The Death of Superman.
The promo is just a few seconds long, but it gives us a brief glimpse of Doomsday taking flight with Superman in his clutches, a tearful Lois Lane, and the villainous Lex Luthor.

Directed by Greg Berlanti and produced by star Scarlett Johansson, the romantic dramedy Fly Me to the Moon was originally meant to be released directly to the Apple TV+ streaming service, but strong test screenings inspired Sony to give the film a theatrical release first. The movie isn’t setting the box office on fire, having pulled in just $20 million worldwide during its first week of release, but it will be heading to Apple TV+ soon anyway – and Berlanti and Johansson were able to establish a strong working relationship during the making of the film. That’s a working relationship they’re now set to continue with a psychological thriller called Sasha, and Deadline reports that Amazon MGM Studios has come out the winner of a five-way auction to land the rights to the project.

Earlier this week, we learned that Marvel Studios is in talks with filmmakers Joe and Anthony Russo to helm both Avengers 5 and Avengers: Secret Wars.
While the duo responsible for Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame have previously said they wouldn't be free to work on an MCU project until the end of the decade, the duo's Agbo-produced content has been a tad hit-or-miss.
Cherry starring Tom Holland wasn't the Oscar frontrunner many expected and blockbuster TV shows and movies like Citadel and The Gray Man received similarly tepid responses. Arguably the only real hit has been Netflix's Extraction movies.
As a result, a return to the Avengers franchise benefits them just as much as it does Marvel Studios.
With so much talk of superhero fatigue, Kevin Feige can't risk the two-part conclusion to the Multiverse Saga being anything other than excellent.

Ok, the big shocker of the week, at least in terms of superhero movies was the news that the Russo Brothers returned to Marvel Studios and seemingly will direct the next two ‘Avengers’ movies, the unofficially titled, “Avengers 5,” and “Avengers: Secret Wars.”
Although it might seem like a no-brainer on the surface, Anthony and Joe Russo directed four super-successful Marvel movies in a row: “Captain America: Winter Soldier,” “Captain America: Civil War,” “Avengers: Infinity War,” and “Avengers: Endgame.” The latter two are among the highest-grossing films of all time.

Channing Tatum captivates audiences in his latest role, drawing significant attention and almost setting a Rotten Tomatoes record with the film Fly Me to the Moon. In this cheeky romantic dramedy, Tatum portrays a smooth-talking and successful marketing manager, blending charm and competence with aplomb. Joining her are Hollywood heavyweights Woody Harrelson, Jim Rash, and Ray Romano. Harrelson plays opposite Heather Graham but mainly stays clear of any romantic entanglements throughout the film. Scarlett Johansson is no stranger to the ugly side of the industry and the actress has braced through it all to become one of the highest-paid actresses. Through her star vehicles and other celebrated works, the actress has built a successful career and has always stood up for herself and what films she wants to associate with.

Published: 2024-07-16 The curious blend of comedy, drama, and star-studded performances makes Fly Me to the Moon one of the most delightful surprises of the summer. Directed by Greg Berlanti, the film set against the backdrop of the 1968 space race, expertly navigates through its historical setting with an original script. A Risky Combination Pays Off Combining multiple genres is generally considered a risky move in Hollywood, where studios often prefer straightforward narratives aimed at specific demographics. However, Fly Me to the Moon manages to bring together elements of drama, comedic caper, and romance. It succeeds precisely because it doesn’t...

Fly Me to the Moon, directed by Greg Berlanti, might just be the movie that breathes life back into original films aimed at adults amidst the summer blockbuster season. Set in 1968, this period piece weaves a narrative where a marketing virtuoso, played by Scarlett Johansson, is tasked with ensuring that NASA’s Apollo 11 moon landing goes off without a hitch. An Unexpected Journey to Theaters The film, which had initially been slated for a direct-to-Apple TV+ release, saw its scope enlarge unexpectedly. With an estimated $100 million investment from Apple TV+, it was set to bypass traditional theaters altogether.

It was a busy weekend at the box office, even though, if one were to look at the July 12 frame on the calendar at the beginning of the year, it wouldn't have seemed like it. "Despicable Me 4" was in its second weekend, one in which it topped the charts again and helped push the "Minions" franchise past $5 billion worldwide. Neon's horror movie "Longlegs" arrived and absolutely obliterated expectations with a $22.6 million opening, a record for the studio. On paper, it didn't seem like it would amount to much, but everything clicked. However, Apple and Sony's "Fly Me to the Moon" is the big question mark as the big budget, '60s-set rom-com had a somewhat soft debut. Yet, it's one of those situations where the opening weekend alone doesn't tell the whole story.

If you've noticed that most romantic comedies seem to be going direct to streaming these days, there's a reason for that. Rom-coms have suffered perhaps more than any other genre at the box office since the advent of streaming. Perhaps it's because they're typically cozy comfort movies perfect for watching on the couch at home, and don't really demand the spectacle of the big screen. Whatever the reason, "Fly Me to the Moon" -- a '60s-set charmer starring Channing Tatum and Scarlett Johansson -- is the latest rom-com to be dead on arrival.
Directed by Greg Berlanti (best known as one of the architects of the Arrowverse), "Fly Me to the Moon" is an alternate history tale set during the lead-up to the Apollo 11 launch. Johansson plays a marketing specialist hired to manage the mission's image in the public eye, and Channing Tatum plays the director of NASA. As sparks fly between them,...

The fun thing about the box office is that it always has the potential to throw a few surprises our way, and that’s exactly what happened on this hot and humid mid-July weekend. Read on for the weekend box office report.
Universal’s animated sequel, “Despicable Me 4,” remained in the top spot at the box office this weekend with an estimated $44.7 million, down 40% from its 4th of July opening weekend, bringing its domestic total to $211.1 million. It added another $88 million internationally in 78 markets for an overseas total of $226.7 million and $437.8 million globally. It has also become the first animated franchise to reach $5 billion globally with six movies to date and a third “Minions” movie just announced for summer 2027.
The big surprise of the weekend had to be Oz Perkins‘s eerie serial killer thriller “Longlegs” starring Maika Monroe and Nicolas Cage, which received great reviews with 87% on Rotten Tomatoes...

NBC’s “Brilliant Minds” is continuing to grow its cast. The medical drama has added Mandy Patinkin in a recurring role, and Steve Howey and André De Shields as guest stars, showrunner Michael Grassi announced on Sunday at the Television Critics Assn. press tour in Pasadena.
Both Howey and Patinkin will star in two episodes.
Patinkin will play an esteemed family doctor who joins the staff of Bronx General Hospital and brings his own “unconventional methods to the workplace.” According to the press release, “his affinity for house calls and long-standing patient relationships wins the respect of our lead, Dr. Wolf, and fosters a mentor-like relationship between the two men.” According to Grassi, he “really shakes up our world.”
Howey portrays a “rugged motorcycle mechanic” who comes to Dr. Wolf looking for help with a gunshot wound and is “forced to make a heartbreaking decision.” De Shields plays “an Alzheimer...

Animation continue to the be hero of the summer office thanks to Despicable Me 4 and Inside Out 2, but Neon’s Longlegs can rightly take a bow after scoring the biggest opening for an independent horror pic in a decade with $22.6 million in ticket sales.
From Illumination and Universal, DM4 easily stayed atop the domestic box office chart in its second weekend with $44.7 million from 4,449 theaters as it jumped the $200 million mark to finish Sunday with a North American tally of $211.1 million. Overseas, Gru and the mischievous Minions also continued to stir up strong sales, earning $88 million from 78 markets for a foreign tally of $226.7 million and $437.8 million globally.
In a notable milestone, the Despicable Me/Minions franchise has crossed $5 billion mark in global ticket sales, a feat no animated franchise has achieved before. (Earlier this week, Illumination announced that a Minions 3 is in the works.)

“Longlegs,” an occult-tinged horror mystery about an FBI agent on the trail of a serial killer, opened to a phenomenal $22.6 million, easily outgrossing “Fly Me to the Moon,” a $100 million dollar rom-com featuring two of Hollywood’s brightest stars.
To pull off that upset, “Longlegs” got a lift from some sensational reviews, as well as a creepy performance by Nicolas Cage. The film’s opening weekend results are a record-breaking debut for Neon, the indie distributor that did an outstanding job of generating word-of-mouth for “Longlegs” thanks to a viral marketing campaign. It was one that saw the studio create a “90s-style website” highlighting the gruesome crimes of its antagonist, as well as a phone number that people could call to hear a demented message from Cage. It’s a page right out of the playbooks of previous cult hits like “The Blair Witch Project,” where it worked so well...

Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum in “Fly Me to the Moon,” in theaters July 12, 2024. Photo Credit: Apple TV+ Greg Berlanti’s Fly Me to the Moon attempts to combine humor and an examination of the 1960s space race through Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum as protagonists, yet fails at creating any connections among its cast or creating any form of on-screen chemistry between characters. The film struggles to maintain its tone, shifting rapidly between comedy, political themes, and intense drama – leaving audiences bewildered and diluting each element’s impact; jokes feel empty while serious scenes feel out-of-place. Though a love story set during the 1960s space race should be riveting, Johansson and Tatum’s relationship in this movie does not engage audiences to its full extent. Due to a lack of depth between their characters or genuine connections being developed between actors and viewer engagement being hindered. The film features...

A new rumor doing the rounds online is claiming that the planned DC Studios/Max Booster Gold series has found its lead, and the titular time-hopping hero will be played by an actor who made his MCU debut just three years ago.
According to Nexus Point News, Kumail Nanjiani - who played Kingo in Marvel Studios' Eternals - has been cast as Michael John Carter in the upcoming Dcu show.
How much stock should we put in this? Well, the source has been reliable in the past and seems very confident in their story, so we'd say there might well be something to it.
If it is accurate, expect the trades or James Gunn to confirm fairly soon.
Nexus Point News previously reported that Gunn and Peter Safran had tapped Danny McBride, John Carcieri and Jeff Fradley, the creative team behind the HBO Max Original series The Righteous Gemstones, to work on the show.

Fly Me to the Moon director Greg Berlanti doesn’t think of himself as a director first and foremost. He’s a storyteller with a keen sense of how he can best serve a project, be it as a producer, writer or director. In the case of Fly Me to the Moon, the New York native had been talking about working with Scarlett Johansson for some time, and the opportunity to helm a hijinks-filled romantic comedy-drama that’s set in and around the Apollo 11 Moon landing was something he couldn’t resist.
His reasoning for signing on was also the polar opposite of why he chose to direct his previous comedy-drama, Love, Simon (2018), which chronicled the coming out story of teenager Simon Spier. (The critically acclaimed hit paved the way for Hulu’s spinoff series, Love, Victor.)

A cool 1960s vibe, an old-fashioned love theme, dramatic music befitting a lunar landing: Daniel Pemberton’s score for “Fly Me to the Moon” needed to accomplish all these and more.
Greg Berlanti’s rom-com with Scarlett Johansson as Kelly Jones, a Madison Avenue marketing genius hired to sell the moon to the American public, and Channing Tatum as Cole, the NASA director in charge of the Apollo 11 launch behind America’s first moon landing, meant Pemberton could incorporate different musical strands “from the fun aspect to the romantic couple element, and then NASA and a kind of Americana nostalgia,” says the English composer whose credits include “The Trial of the Chicago 7” and “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.”
“I was trying to capture this beautiful, melancholic nostalgia for a time that feels very distant now in America,” Pemberton adds. “One of my favorite pieces in the film is when Apollo...

Animated blockbuster Despicable Me 4 will be aiming to set records across its UK-Ireland run, as it opens in 688 cinemas this weekend through Universal.
Produced by Universal-owned animation stalwarts Illumination Entertainment, the Despicable Me franchise is among the most profitable of recent decades. The first film opened to £3.9m on its way to a £20.2m total in 2010; before the sequel started with £10m and ended on £47.5m in 2013; and was in turn surpassed by Despicable Me 3, which opened to £11.2m and closed on £47.9m.

Yes, I see that title and I immediately picture “ole’ blue eyes”, a trench coat draped over a shoulder, crooning that catchy 1954 Bart Howard classic. And that’s just what the producers want to evoke, to get you in a nostalgic mood for a frothy romance set against the backdrop of the “space race”. Mission accomplished, but could a “rom-com” really work against the somber historical backdrop we’ve seen in heavy, serious films like First Man, A Million Miles Away, Hidden Figures, Apollo 13, and the HBO miniseries, “From the Earth to the Moon”.Now, that’s the trick, much like the possible results facing NASA, Will it blast off or crash land? But it’s “star power” rather than rocket fuel that propels Fly Me To The Moon.

It’s easy to assume that a screenwriter with the last name Gilroy had an effortless foray into show business, but that was anything but the case for Fly Me to the Moon’s Rose Gilroy.
As the daughter of Dan Gilroy and Rene Russo, as well as niece to Tony and John Gilroy, Rose attempted to steer away from the family business by trying her hand at pre-med and pre-law trajectories during college, but neither option ended up being in the cards for her. Upon graduating Colgate University in 2016, she then modeled for a stretch, but it soon became apparent that writing was in her DNA as well. After all, she’s also the granddaughter of the late Frank D. Gilroy, who won a Pulitzer and a Tony for his 1965 play, The Subject Was Roses.
So she started writing scripts, including a psychological thriller called The Pack, which is...

This article contains Fly Me to the Moon spoilers.
It’s a breathtaking shot. More than 50 years after the world watched Neil Armstrong take his one small step for man, and his one giant leap for all mankind, we now see those steps toward the lunar surface from Armstrong’s point-of-view. As the door to the Apollo 11 capsule opens, it is from the astronauts’ perspective we glimpse the fresh, unvarnished moon rock awaiting human footprints.
If this image felt faintly familiar while watching Greg Berlanti’s Fly Me to the Moon, a fusion of the an old school ‘90s romantic comedy with the slipperiness of a conspiracy thriller laugher of the same era, that’s because it’s more or less the same shot in Damien Chazelle’s First Man, an underrated Armstrong biopic that waits until this exact moment to change the film stock and camera lens to true IMAX.

Channing Tatum can’t recall the first scene he and Scarlett Johansson filmed together for “Fly Me to the Moon.” He does, however, remember where they first met: at a table read for the romantic comedy.
Although Tatum and Johansson were both involved in the films “Don Jon” and “Hail, Caeser!,” the two actors “never crossed paths,” as Tatum puts it, until “Fly Me to the Moon.”
“I remember us going down right after the table read to go into hair and makeup and start to try to figure out our look for the movie — it’s period and everything — and she was trying to figure out her wig for the movie,” Tatum told Variety at the “Fly Me to the Moon” premiere in New York City on Monday night. “I just immediately started making fun of her wig. Warner Bros. never quite figured out the whole "shared universe" thing, with the Dceu, Arrowverse, and various other TV shows, all standing separate from one another.
Arguably the most successful of all those realities was The CW's. Starting with Arrow, the "Arrowverse" rapidly expanded to encompass several small screen franchises, including The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, and eventually even Supergirl.
Crossovers took place far more frequently than in the Dceu, with Crisis on Infinite Earths becoming one of the Arrowverse's greatest successes.
Greg Berlanti was the one who helped start it all and remains a creative force in the background of those TV shows. He's since moved on and, in an interview with Deadline, confirmed he's ready to see what DC Studios comes up with when James Gunn and Peter Safran launch the Dcu.

Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com audio film review for “Fly Me the Moon,” an alternative history satire about the Apollo 11 first-msn-on-the-moon mission, featuring Scarlett Johansson, Channing Tatum and Woody Harrelson. In theaters on July 12th.
Rating: 3.0/5.0
The premise is basically a parallel universe to the actual event in 1969 as Channing Tatum is Cole Davis, the flight director for Apollo 11. When expected funding is being held up by Congress, the Nixon administration sends an uncover CIA spook named Moe (Woody Harrelson), who helps NASA to hire a hot shot Mad-Men era marketing expert named Kelly Jones (Scarlett Johansson) to boost the profile in the space race against the Soviet Union. This confuses Cole’s right-hand man Henry (Ray Romano) and puts pressure on the rest of the mission, including a commercial film director hired by Kelly named Lance (Jim Rash), who is given a peculiar assignment.

As has been the case most of the year, any weekend with a big movie tends to be followed by a lighter weekend with a bunch of odds and ends, and that’s the case this weekend as well. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.

Can good old fashioned star power and solid reviews propel “Fly Me to the Moon” to the top of the box office?
Well, even Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum, whose names appear above the title, are no match for Gru. “Despicable Me 4” is widely expected to top the charts in its second weekend of release, earning more than $30 million. However, “Fly Me to the Moon,” a romantic comedy set against the backdrop of the 1960s’ Space Race, is on track to debut to $12 million. That’s a solid result for a movie aimed at adults, particularly one that’s opening in the midst of summer, a time of year dominated by franchise fare and animated titles.
However, getting Johansson and Tatum to meet cute in the halls of NASA wasn’t a cheap proposition. “Fly Me to the Moon” cost more than $100 million to make, so it’s probably...

Exclusive: At the height of Peak TV, Greg Berlanti’s career took off like a rocket. His Berlanti Productions had a record-breaking 15 shows on the air simultaneously, from DC properties like The Flash, Supergirl and Arrow to Riverdale and Blindspot. Berlanti will have six shows on air this fall, which gave him time to launch Fly Me to the Moon, starring Scarlett Johansson, Channing Tatum, Woody Harrelson and Ray Romano. The rom-com pairs Johansson as a gifted but shady sales person trying to outrun her past, and Tatum as a fighter pilot-turned-NASA leader trying to help beat the Russians to the moon. She comes to Cape Canaveral at the behest of a Nixon fixer (Harrelson), hired to stage the moon landing for a telecast to run on global TV if things go awry. It’s the first film Berlanti has directed since 2018’s Love, Simon, a crowd pleasing theatrical release.
