Steve Carell first came to prominence as a correspondent on “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart,” appearing as a regular cast member from 1999 to 2005. He left the nightly news satire to play bumbling boss Michael Scott in “The Office,” a role which brought him six Emmy nominations as Best Comedy Actor and a Golden Globe win in 2006.
After supporting roles in such films as “Bruce Almighty” (2003), “Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy” (2004), “Melinda and Melinda” (2004), and “Bewitched” (2005), Carell moved into leading man status playing a middle-aged man seeking to have sex for the first time in “The 40-Year-Old Virgin” (2005). He received wide critical acclaim the very next year for playing a gay Proust scholar in the Oscar-winning “Little Miss Sunshine.”
Carell became an Oscar nominee himself for playing eccentric billionaire John du Pont in Bennett Miller‘s true life sports drama “Foxcatcher” (2014). He reaped a Golden Globe bid the following...

Matt Damon and Casey Affleck have both won Oscars for Massachusetts-set movies; Damon for writing “Good Will Hunting” with Casey’s brother Ben, and Casey for acting in the tragic drama “Manchester by the Sea.” Damon and the Afflecks’ latest Boston-set team-up, heist comedy “The Instigators,” is unlikely to win them any additional gold, but it’s a fun ride nevertheless.
Damon — reuniting with his “Bourne Identity” director Doug Liman — stars as Rory, a financially strapped middle-aged man who decides to give heisting a shot. He teams up with Cobby for some scores, and then gets his therapist Donna (Academy Award nominee Hong Chau) involved against her will. How does that make her feel? Not good! The cast also includes heavy hitters like Michael Stuhlbarg, Paul Walter Hauser, Ving Rhames, Alfred Molina, and Rob Gronkowski. Yes, this movie is so Boston that Gronk is in it. “The Instigators” is now...

The enduring legacy of campy cult favorite “Ed Wood” is still celebrated 30 years later.
The beloved 1994 film was directed by Tim Burton and starred Johnny Depp as the filmmaker known for helming B-movie greats, most infamously 1959’s “Plan 9 from Outer Space.” Wood’s other features include “Orgy of the Dead,” “Glen or Glenda,” and “Bride of the Monster.” He was awarded the Golden Turkey title of Worst Director in 1975.
Burton’s 1994 biopic “Ed Wood” was written by Larry Karaszewski and Scott Alexander, and co-starred Bill Murray, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Martin Landau, who won an Oscar for portraying Bela Lugosi.

Many awards prognosticators expected the drama categories at this year’s Emmys to feature an odd assortment of nominated titles. Consider it a perfect storm of sorts: With the ending of HBO’s Succession (which took the top prize for three of its four seasons) and AMC’s Better Call Saul (which garnered a staggering 53 nominations across its six seasons without a single win) — plus the fact that last year’s strikes forced shows like last year’s drama nominees The Last of Us, Stranger Things, The White Lotus and Yellowjackets to delay production — this year’s contenders for best drama series include only one previous nominee in The Crown, which won the prize in 2021.

It’s no secret that the Covid-19 pandemic upended the movie theater business in 2020, but in the years since, the industry has slowly climbed back. In 2021, 14 movies were able to cross the coveted $100 million mark at the U.S. box office. In 2022, that number jumped up to 18 films. And in 2023, there were a whopping 25 such blockbusters. So how many features released during the current 2024 calendar year will end up becoming box office behemoths? Stay tuned.
To date, the biggest money-makers of the year are a pair of highly anticipated sequels: “Inside Out 2” and “Dune: Part Two.” Scroll through our gallery above (or click here for direct access) to see all of the 2024 box office hits so far that made more than $100 million in the United States. The number will continue to grow as high-profile movies like “Wicked” and “Mufasa: The Lion King” will be released later in the year.

When fans got their first peek at the lives of the employees of Dunder Mifflin Paper Co., Scranton, little did they know how much they would fall in love with the show. And initially they didn’t. While the first season has its own fanbase, it still received a lot of flak. But how the turntables.
Over the course of the next few years, the series mesmerized fans, who couldn’t help but fall in with the characters overtime. And Ed Helms has the perfect rationale for explaining how the writers got the character development right.

What made The Office the success it was, was how well it could make us fall for, and hate at the same time, characters who were total pricks.

The Rise of a Phenomenal Actor Few actors have had as diverse a filmography as the great Paul Dano. If ever there was an actor who could convince you he burned his foot on a George Foreman Grill, it’s Steve Carell. And while Michael Scott has several Dundies to his name, Carell never won a single Emmy for playing the beloved Dunder Mifflin boss, something that still bugs the cast of The Office.
There isn’t a whole lot that gets the Creed Bratton character worked up, but the actor (also Creed Bratton) remains dumbfounded that Steve Carell didn’t take home a Primetime Emmy for The Office despite six nominations. As he put it, “There were other people who were against him – there was no comparison. That’s a travesty. So that’s still a bone of contention. I’m chewing it, boys, I’m gnawing on it.” As for who Carell lost to, there’s Tony Shaloub for Monk, Ricky Gervais for Extras, Alec Baldwin for...

Director Bennett Miller is working on his first feature film since 2014’s Foxcatcher and it’ll focus on AI.
AI is a popular theme in today’s films. In fact, we’ve just written about the worrying undercurrent of it in Netflix’s Heart Of Stone. Other recent films such as Ex Machina, The Creator and M3GAN have also ruminated on the possibilities of AI on the big screen.
Another director to tackle the subject is Bennett Miller, the director of Capote, Moneyball and Foxcatcher. In fact, Miller hasn’t made a film since his 2014 Oscar-nominated Foxcatcher, which transformed Steve Carrell into troubled millionaire and wrestling enthusiast John E du Pont.
Miller recently told Config24 (via World Of Reel) that he’s developing a new film about AI, something that featured strongly at his art exhibition at Gagosian.
“Well, my next film … I don’t know how much I should say … A.

Post-2005 Doctor Who main TV-show companions. That’s the first qualifier to add to the following list. For now at least, we’re celebrating only the Nu-Who main companions who had their own proper stint travelling in the Tardis, or any of the many wonderful actors who preceded them in the classic era.

Among the show’s standout stars, Krasinski rose to significant prominence. Apart from his comedic excellence on-screen, he also came up with a brilliant idea to hook the star cast behind the scenes – which meant installing instant messenger on the cast computers.

Despicable Me 4 Box Office (Worldwide): Crosses $350 Million Mark Overseas( Photo Credit – YouTube )
The audience has not forgotten Illumination’s biggie, Despicable Me 4, amid the arrival of movies like Twisters and, most recently, Deadpool & Wolverine. The animated film with Steve Carell as the lead voice cast is set to cross a significant milestone at the worldwide box office. Keep scrolling for the deets.
The makers maintained the franchise’s tradition of releasing the movie on the Fourth of July week and the Minions and Gru are always loved by the fans. Hence, it is the highest-grossing animated film franchise ever and has crossed the $5 billion mark. In this fourth installment, Will Ferrell and Sofia Vergara have joined the cast as the main antagonist and his girlfriend, respectively. Music-centered biopics are one of the hottest commodities in Cinema today. From the upcoming Michael Jackson biopic to the retellings of the Whitney Houston and Elvis stories, it feels as if you’re a figure in music, you will get a biopic onscreen. However, there is an upcoming biopic about one of the biggest musicians out there. That is a little more unconventional. Pharrell Williams’ biopic, ‘Piece by Piece’, had a trailer before the new ‘Despicable Me’ movie. While many people were excited to see a Pharrell Williams biopic, many were confused as a biopic does not portray the Pharrell Williams story with actors. Rather, ‘Piece by Piece’ is a Lego movie, meaning that the Pharrell Williams story will be told with animated Lego characters. “Deadpool and Wolverine” is now playing in theaters, and although Hugh Jackman probably won’t receive any major awards nominations for his anticipated return as his comic book character, he has been nominated for an Oscar as well as other major trophies throughout his career. Let’s look back at his many awards races.
After his breakthrough performance as Wolverine in the first “X-Men” film, Jackman spent most of the 2000s appearing in summer action blockbusters like “Swordfish” and “Van Helsing” as well as “X-Men” sequels and a prequel. He was never a serious awards contender for the 2001 romantic comedy “Kate & Leopold,” but he did receive his first Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy. The other nominees were Ewan McGregor for “Moulin Rouge!,” John Cameron Mitchell for “Hedwig and the Angry Inch,” Billy Bob Thornton for “Bandits” and Gene Hackman for “The Royal Tenenbaums,...

Is the Despicable Me franchise a Darwinist project in which the Minions started their evolution back at the beginning of life on Earth, or did intelligent design deliver Gru his wacky yellow Tic-Tac workers? More importantly, are the films’ writers finally ready to answer the Hitler question?
When Despicable Me premiered in the summer of 2010, the star of the smash-hit kid’s comedy wasn’t Steve Carell playing the lead villain Gru, or Jason Segel’s alternate antagonist Vector, or even the thankfully-since-fired Russell Brand as the brilliant scientist Dr. Nefario. No, regardless of the billing order, the undeniable headliner of the massively successful movie that launched a seven-film franchise was the collective order of the Minions, Gru’s colorful cronies whose slapstick antics and love of bananas captivated children and adults alike to the tune of a half-billion-dollar return at the box office.

As the situation comedy disappears from broadcast television, we might be losing more than simply 23 minutes of laughs surrounded by Progressive commercials. Over the past 50 years, the sitcom has been a surefire cannon from which to launch unknown comic actors onto the A-list.
Here are 7 sitcoms that turned anonymous comedians into the biggest stars in the world…
1 Mork & Mindy
Robin Williams was a 1970s club comic with a growing reputation as an improvisational genius. A guest turn on Happy Days — producer Garry Marshall’s kid was into Star Wars so Marshall ordered writers to invent a funny alien — launched a spin-off series that turned Williams into a star practically overnight. Also up for the Happy Days alien cameo? A young Richard Lewis.
2 Bosom Buddies
Want a idiotic premise for a sitcom? How about two guys who decide to pose as women so they can get a permanent room in an affordable women-only hotel.

Fourteen years ago, ‘Despicable Me’ premiered in theatres, winning the hearts of children and adults alike. Audiences all over the world fell in love with Gru, his adopted daughters, and, of course, the minions. ‘Despicable Me’ was huge, and there was no doubt that a sequel was in the works. Fast forward fourteen years, and not only has there been a ‘Despicable Me’ sequel, but two spin-off films that focus on the minions, and a third and fourth film has been added to Gru’s story. With all of the minion mania feeling so far away, audiences are beginning to question the integrity of the fourth film… was ‘Despicable Me 4’ really needed? Bad Monkey, Bill Lawrence’s adaptation of the Carl Hiaasen 2013 novel of the same thing and a longtime passion project for the power producer, is finally set to premiere. Having firmed up plans for its Aug. 14 release, Apple TV+ dropped the first trailer for the project on Wednesday.
The Florida-set dramedy mystery tells the story of Andrew Yancy (Vince Vaughn), a former Miami P.D. detective whose transfer to the Keys quickly resulted in him getting bounced from the force entirely to work as a health inspector. When a privileged tourist hooks a human arm on a fishing trip, Yancy is drawn into a murder mystery whose resolution he thinks might earn back his badge.
Filling out the comically large ensemble of oddball characters related to the case are L. Scott Caldwell, Rob Delaney, Meredith Hagner, Natalie Martinez, Alex Moffat , Michelle Monaghan, Ronald Peet and a capuchin playing the titular primate.

Apple is trying to sever itself from overpaying for its Apple TV+ series and films.
Apple, the world’s richest (and only $3 trillion) company, is now practicing frugality as it pertains to entertainment content, Bloomberg reported. If only they’d do the same for the price of our iPhones.
For Apple, cost-cutting, the latest push toward profitability in streaming, is a Pro Display Xdr-sized about-face. To launch Apple TV+ the company courted huge talent, and did so with a seemingly unlimited budget.
Apple TV+ debuted on November 1, 2019 with “The Morning Show” starring Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, and Steve Carell, “See” with Jason Momoa, and a deal with Oprah Winfrey to turn her book club into a streaming series. It would soon court the likes of Martin Scorsese, Ridley Scott, and Brad Pitt, to name a few. And, at a certain point at least, the “Ted Lasso” cast couldn’t have come cheap.

It has been 14 years since Despicable Me first hit the theatres in 2010. On 5th July, 2024 the fourth installment in the franchise or ‘fourthquel’, began its theatrical run. Not much about the characters has changed. Of course, Gru is no more the bad guy. But he’s still the same. So are his girls, and the minions, as well as the movie’s stellar performance at the Box Office. The franchise has already broken some crazy Box Office records. And it is on the way to break some more.

Friday started off with a bang as the cyber world was thrown into turmoil. With airlines in the United States facing communication issues with the Faa and major airlines grounding operations worldwide, it seemed like the world was on the brink of disaster. Screens at airports turned blue, Fids systems crashed, and chaos reigned as the systems that were meant to protect us from hackers inadvertently caused more harm than good.

The Office completely revolutionized the mockumentary-style sitcom genre. The show, which was adapted from the same-titled British series, debuted in 2005 and ran for nine seasons. However, despite having a sizable fan base that continued to this day, the show had its fair share of embarrassing moments. One that specifically features Jim Halpert (John Krasinski) and Pam Beesley (Jenna Fischer) at the forefront.

The duo was an embodiment of couple goals on the show. However, some of their earlier interactions on the show might raise concerns. In one particular scene in question, Jim was blamed for crossing a major line. But was he the only one at fault?

The hit show ended in 2013, but several scenes and plots are echoed by fans even to this day.

The almost-cast list for the character of Michael Scott on The Office (US) is long and illustrious. In the run up to filming the remake’s pilot episode, Better Call Saul’s Bob Odenkirk was in contention for the part, as were Oscar-nominee Paul Giamatti and Oscar-winner Philip Seymour Hoffman. US comedy stars Patton Oswalt, Adam Scott, Rainn Wilson and more all were auditioned (see the evidence here), before Steve Carrell made the role undeniably his own.
Another name to add to that already starry list? Ricky Gervais.
The Office co-creator and star was quick to rubbish the idea, as he told British TV producers Peter Fincham and Jon Plowman in a 2021 episode of BBC comedy podcast What’s Funny About…, but was apparently offered the remake’s lead role in very early discussions. Gervais described getting his first phonecall from US producer Ben Silverman about a potential remake, and...

NBC's "The Office" may now be considered one of the most beloved sitcoms in television history, but when the network first announced its plans to produce an Americanized version of the critically acclaimed BBC series, the reaction from fans of the original was far from joyous. Ricky Gervais and Stephan Merchant's "Office" was spiky and profane in a way that network shows simply couldn't be (thanks to their companies' Standards and Practice watchdogs). It was also narratively compact, running a mere two seasons and 14 episodes (counting the two-part Christmas special), which kept the show from getting stale. Most of all, it just felt kind of perfect (which Gervais proved when he tried to revive the series himself). A U.S. rendition stretched out over 20-plus episodes per season was bound to pale in comparison.

Few sitcom characters have become more firmly entrenched in pop culture than Steve Carell’s Michael Scott on the American version of “The Office.” But modern television history could have been altered forever had the casting process broken slightly differently. After the likes of Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Paul Giamatti turned down the role, producers also considered casting Bob Odenkirk as Michael Scott. But the “Better Call Saul” star, who later went on to appear in an episode of the show, is at peace with how it all played out.
In a recent appearance on the “Office Ladies” podcast, hosted by “The Office” stars Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey (via The Hollywood Reporter), Odenkirk reflected on losing the iconic role. Rather than be bitter, he explained why Carell was a better fit than him to play the famously bumbling boss.

“Despicable Me 4” loomed large at the international box office, earning a mighty $88 million to top charts. The animated sequel’s global haul now stands at $437.8 million. Over the weekend, the “Despicable Me” series of movies became the first animated franchise in history to cross the $5 billion mark.
“Despicable Me 4” brings back Steve Carell as Gru, a reformed supervillain, and pits him against Will Ferrell as Maxime Le Mal, a former schoolmate turned bad guy and rival. The movie is playing in nearly 80 foreign markets, including China, where it debuted across 35,000 screens and 11,000 locations to earn $11.8 million. Universal and Illumination produced the movie.
