Denis Villenueve approached his first "Dune" film by adapting only half of Frank Herbert's original novel, betting he could tell the story's second chunk in a sequel. This gambit paid off when "Dune" became a box office success, but it meant holding back some characters for "Part Two."
Among them was Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen, nephew of Baron Vladimir and Paul Atreides' (Timothee Chalamet) counterpart. Feyd made his debut in "Dune: Part Two" played by Austin Butler, and what a debut it was. Like in the book, Feyd celebrates his birthday in the gladiatorial pits of Harkonnen homeworld Giedi Prime, killing three drugged Atreides captives. If you want a taste of what a science-fiction version of "Gladiator" would look like, there you go.
Villenueve's realization of the scene is memorable for two reasons. One, Butler, who intuitively chooses to do an impression of Stellan Skarsgård -- the actor playing his uncle...

The impact of Frank Herbert’s Dune upon its release, which reshaped the sci-fi landscape, can’t be overstated. While it would take another two decades before the novel saw its own big-screen adaptation, directed by David Lynch, it did contribute to making George Lucas’ Star Wars iconic.
While Star Wars is an amalgamation of many works, including Akira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai and Victor Fleming’s The Wizard of Oz, it’s the influence of Dune that stands out the most. But despite the similarities, Lynch was less than thrilled when asked to direct Return of the Jedi.

Before helming the first Dune adaptation in 1984, which ended up becoming one of the biggest mishaps in David Lynch‘s career, the director was initially offered to take the wheel of Star Wars.

David Lynch’s career as a renowned filmmaker, screenwriter, and artist is distinguished by his unique style, delving deeply into the human psyche with captivating, dreamlike visuals. As an auteur, he masterfully fuses experimental film techniques, blending unconventional horror and avant-garde cinema with box office profits.
Before making his first experimental shorts he studied painting at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in the sixties. His foray into film began with a one-minute short he created for a contest in Philadelphia that led him to the American Film Institute, where he made The Grandmother (1970) and started working on the indie cult classic, Eraserhead (1976).
Lynch went mainstream with The Elephant Man (1980) and ventured into science fiction with Dune, based on Frank Herbert’s novel and starring Kyle MacLachlan. Lynch would continue to collaborate with MacLachlan in future projects, including his next art house project,...

Legendary director David Lynch is giving an update on his health.
The Blue Velvet director and Twin Peaks creator says he’s been diagnosed with emphysema from many years of smoking and that he’s now housebound. He says he cannot leave his home over fears he’ll get Covid.
“I’ve gotten emphysema from smoking for so long and so I’m homebound whether I like it or not,” the 78-year-old Lynch told Sight & Sound (via The Independent). “It would be very bad for me to get sick, even with a cold.”
The director added he “can only walk a short distance before” running out of oxygen.
Lynch noted he’s unlikely to direct a film again, unless he could shoot a film remotely. “I would do it remotely if it comes to it,” he said. “I wouldn’t like that so much.”

Compared to most planets in the Known Universe in Frank Herbert's "Dune" saga, the lush oceanic planet of Caladan feels like paradise. The environmental facets of this bountiful planet are often used to evoke sharp contrasts with Giedi Prime or Arrakis, as the latter feature rough terrains and near-inhospitable conditions that have shaped its inhabitants for millennia. While Giedi Prime is a bleak, hyper-industrialist dystopia, the dunes of Arrakis challenge every invader staking a claim on the planet's resources, its sacred secrets only privy to the mysterious Fremen. In stark contrast to these harsh environments, Caladan has always been associated with a flourishing economy and general prosperity, its overabundance of water emerging as a mythic dream to those who view it as a luxury instead of a necessity.

"Dune" is an interesting science-fiction world because it is extremely fantastical in many places, like the Spice Guild's mutant navigators, the anti-gravity attack of "Dune: Part Two," everything about the giant worms, and of course, "God Emperor of Dune," a story so bizarre only a cartoon has dared adapt it. And yet, it is also a world that is clearly meant to be based in our universe. In the books, the Atraides trace their line back to ancient Greece, and Paul reads from a book that talks about Earth, or Old Terra, the planet thought to be where humanity originated. Paul even compares himself to Genghis Khan and Hitler at one point.
The line between the fantastical and the grounded is rather thin in "Dune," and in Denis Villeneuve's adaptations we almost got some very specific and contemporary Canadian lingo make its way to Arrakis. As Josh Brolin told Collider,...

David Lynch is not very fond of his film adaptation of Frank Herbert's "Dune," feeling that it was too much a studio monster than his personal vision. After the success of "The Elephant Man" in 1980, Lynch was approached by multiple studios to handle gigantic blockbuster projects; Lynch's fans will point casual readers to an anecdote he once told about being invited by George Lucas to direct "Return of the Jedi." Learning about the franchise gave Lynch a headache, especially when he learned what a Wookiee was.
The blockbuster project Lynch accepted instead was "Dune," which he was able to make in his own preferred idiom. Even so, Lynch didn't have total creative control and felt that the whole picture was a bit of a mess. Storytelling-wise, he may be correct; a lot of information flies at the audience pretty quickly, and Frank Herbert's massively complex mythology isn't easily understood...

“Final Cut” means a director gets the last word on editing a movie. But usually, contracts and studio decisions don’t let this happen. So, many directors end up just working on projects without having any real control.
Still from Dune (1984) (Universal Pictures)
As a result, even if the final version of a movie pleases the audience, it often doesn’t fully satisfy because it may lack the depth and originality that the director’s vision would have provided. The filmmaker plays a crucial role in interpreting the script and bringing the story to life. If the their vision isn’t considered, the chances of poor reviews are high. This is exactly what happened to David Lynch when he directed Dune.

A grieving boy is drawn into a magical land in Wolfgang Petersen’s ambitious fantasy adventure, rereleased for its 40th anniversary
This 1984 family fantasy adventure has been rereleased for its 40th anniversary; it is an ambitious German production in English (with the opening scenes shot in Vancouver) from director Wolfgang Petersen, featuring Spielbergian mop-haired kids and an extravaganza of wondrous beasts and princesses – surely an influence on the Harry Potter movies a generation later. It is freely adapted from one section of the popular German children’s story Die Unendliche Geschichte by Michael Ende. Oddly, given the title, the film does of course provide us with a resoundingly happy ending (although more franchise episodes were to come).
A lonely, bullied boy called Bastian (Barret Oliver) is devastated by the recent death of his mother; his emotionally cold father brusquely tells him not to dwell on his feelings and just get on with things.

Get ready for an onslaught of "Dune" material now that Hollywood has recognized there's quite an audience for author Frank Herbert's revered sci-fi saga. Not only do we have the upcoming Max series "Dune: Prophecy," the trailer for which reveals several sacrifices will be made, but we'll also see the return of Timothée Chalamet's Paul Atreides in a third movie from sci-fi maestro Denis Villeneuve.
After "Dune: Part Two" proved massively popular at a time when the box office wasn't exactly at its peak, you better believe Legendary Pictures decided to keep the spice flowing with a third "Dune" movie. The next installment in Villeneuve's epic saga looks likely to be an adaptation of the second novel in Herbert's original run, with Villeneuve previously revealing his eagerness to adapt "Dune Messiah." At this point, the man can basically do no wrong, having proven Herbert's supposedly "unfilmable...

Frank Herbert's "Dune" is one of the most celebrated and influential science fiction novels of all time, a dauntingly complex narrative that tackles many different themes, ideas, and tones — with the story getting weirder and weirder as time goes on.
It is a book long considered to be impossible to adapt because of how dense it is and how fantastical many of its concepts are. Despite the simplicity of the main story, the worldbuilding is detailed and layered (and no movie adaptation has fully captured this), and bringing this world to life requires extensive use of special effects. Still, as detailed as Herbert is in many of his universe's elements, particularly the ecology of Arrakis and how that entire world works, there are many important aspects that are left surprisingly vague in the books. Whether it's the ornithopter or every other spaceship having bizarre descriptions that are immediately striking...

In the same IMAX presentation that announced the potential title of Steven Spielberg’s next movie – that’d be The Dish – it was also confirmed that Denis Villeneuve will indeed have a third Dune film in cinemas by the end of 2026.
Reports have been circulating for a while that Villeneuve is making a second Dune sequel next, with Warner stating in early July that it has an ‘event film’ from the director scheduled for the 18th December 2026. Hollywood sources all suggested that the mystery film was Dune: Messiah, despite Villeneuve’s earlier suggestions that he might tackle a different project first.

When it was announced that Timothée Chalamet will be starring in A Complete Unknown, fans were already half sold about the project. It isn’t everyday that you get to see a biopic about the Like a Rolling Stone singer. Add that to the acting prowess of the Call Me By Your Name star, and you’re set to have a combination that is set to enthrall fans. But fans should not ignore another powerhouse who is also behind the making of the movie – James Mangold. To movie connieseurs, the name of the Logan director is enough proof of how good the movie ought to be.

When Denis Villeneuve's "Dune" was first announced, it already had a stellar cast in place. With Timothée Chalamet in the lead role of Paul Atreides, Zendaya playing Fremen warrior Chani, and Stellan Skarsgård portraying Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, the movie didn't necessarily need any more star power. But Villeneuve wasn't going to hold back. After all, he was finally giving Frank Herbert's supposedly "unfilmable" 1965 novel the big screen treatment it had long deserved, and such a momentous occasion demanded one of the finest casts assembled in recent decades.
So, as the casting news kept coming, we soon learned that none other than Oscar Isaac had joined "Dune" as Duke Leto Atreides, father to Paul and leader of House Atreides. It was a decision that made so much sense. Not only did Isaac come with some serious sci-fi bonafides following his work in 2014's "Ex Machina" and 2018's "Annihilation," he...

Frank Herbert’s sandy lore is returning to the screens once again through Dune: Prophecy and the buzz surrounding it couldn’t be stronger. After the majestic success of Denis Villeneuve’s film series based on Herbert’s novel series of the same name, the hype around the saga is still as strong as ever, and fans are hoping for nothing but the best.

That being said, there is one interesting element about this upcoming series that is good news for fans: The fact that the show will be adapting one major arc from the novels about the Imperium. What makes this all the more worth waiting for is that this arc wouldn’t be as minutely adapted as Villeneuve’s saga did and would explore it more widely.

The buzz around Dune: Prophecy continues to grow as the HBO Original Series promises to delve into the intricate world of the Bene Gesserit. With the premiere set for this November, fans are eagerly anticipating the prequel that explores the origins of these powerful women within Frank Herbert’s universe. Denis Villeneuve, who serves as an executive producer, has expressed his deep interest in the series, stating, The Bene Gesserit have always been fascinating to me, Focusing a series around that powerful order of women seemed not only relevant and inspiring but a dynamic setting for the television series. Indeed, this...

Denis Villeneuve's Dune: Messiah may be some way off yet (December 2026 if reports are to be believed), but we don't have that long to wait before we return to the universe of spice and space politicking Frank Herbert built. Dune: Prophecy, showrunner Alison Schapker's Bene Gesserit based prequel to Villeneuve's Dune set 10,000 years before Timothée Chalamet's Paul Atreides' time, is headed our way later this year. The new release window confirmation came along with a tantalising new teaser for the Emily Watson and Mark Strong starring sci-fi prequel series. Check it out:
The mysteries of the Bene Gesserit aren't a problem to be solved, but a reality to experience — and if this new trailer's anything to go by, it's some reality! HBO has just dropped the second teaser trailer for Dune: Prophecy (via SFFGazette.com), the upcoming small screen prequel which we believe is meant to be a standalone story unconnected to Denis Villeneuve's movies.
It's also been confirmed today that the show will premiere this November, so we're now just waiting for an exact date.
While not quite as visually stunning as those big screen adaptations, the show does have the same look and feel even if it's hard to shake the feeling it might end up being "Dune on a budget." Still, we're intrigued by what we see here and, for fans of Frank Herbert and the Sisterhood of Dune, written by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson, this story being told on screen is long-overdue.

When Duke Leto Atreides took on stewardship of Arrakis, he did so at the behest of the Imperium. The transfer of stewardship featured all manner of pomp, which cost the Imperium “1.46 million and 62 solares,” according to Mentat Thufir Hawat.
Those external shows of extravagance are about all that viewers get to see with the Imperium, in both Dune and its sequel Dune: Part Two. If "House of the Dragon" season 2 isn't quite enough to scratch your itch for great noble houses, plotting, and backstabbing, then don't worry, backup is on the way! It comes in the form of "Dune: Prophecy." a prequel series set 10,000 years before the events of Frank Herbert's original novel (recently adapted into two movies by director Denis Villeneuve), which tells the origin story of the Bene Gesserit. This sisterhood of space witches uses ancestral memory and preternatural foresight to manipulate power across the galaxy through careful "breeding" of the noble houses.
The first teaser for "Dune: Prophecy" felt very much like "Game of Thrones ... in Space!" -- though that is pretty much the entire premise of the "Dune" franchise (which predates "Game of Thrones" by several decades). Alison Schapker, who has prior experience bringing elaborate sci-fi worlds to life on "Westworld" and "Altered Carbon" serves as showrunner for the series.

In just a few short years, Denis Villeneuve's blockbuster adaptation of Frank Herbert's classic sci-fi novel "Dune" has become quite the beloved film franchise. "Part One" set the table for Timothée Chalamet's rise to power as Paul Atreides, while "Part Two" saw him become the leader of an ominous revolution that is poised to lead to a disastrous future. We'll find out soon enough when "Dune: Messiah" arrives, though no specific release date has been formally announced yet.

Frank Herbert's "Dune" is an unkillable intellectual property. The novel was rejected by a multitude of publishing houses before a company best known for putting out auto-repair manuals took a chance on the sandswept sci-fi saga. Despite poor reviews and soft sales, the book caught on via word-of-mouth, spawning a series of bestselling novels that, unsurprisingly, caught the eye of Hollywood producers eager to find the next "Star Wars." They failed. Repeatedly.
Peyote Western pioneer Alejandro Jodorowsky sought to craft a mind-bending epic out of Herbert's novel, and, as recounted in the un-making-of documentary "Jodorowsky's Dune," dreamed too big. David Lynch was the next man up, and I think, as a fan of the first few books, succeeded in delivering a wildly truncated, yet generally coherent rendition of the novel on his own delectably perverse terms. After writing his magnum opus, "Dune," Frank Herbert penned several science-fiction books, including 1986's "Man of Two Worlds," written in collaboration with his son, Brian Herbert. Although much more contained in scope and ambition than his "Dune" saga, "Man of Two Worlds" delved into the intriguing premise of human and alien minds, and how beautiful and disastrous it would be if one body were to house these warring identities. The collaboration between the two authors birthed a fascinating if somewhat shaky foundation for a world that could have been, weaving fantasy and satire into a story that feels both dense and nostalgic. Brian's involvement in his father's work is not limited to this — he kept the "Dune" legacy going by piecing together prequels and sequels based on his father's notes, penning companion pieces such as "Legends of Dune" and "Sandworms of Dune" over the years.

David Lynch is one of the most prominent filmmakers in the entire entertainment industry, renowned for how surreally he brings his pieces to life. With hits like Eraserhead and Mulholland Drive to his name, he has made sure to leave his audiences truly enchanted. But among all of those masterpieces, there have also been a few disappointments, like his version of Dune (1984).

While this particular live-action adaptation of Frank Herbert’s saga was indeed pretty flawed, it was still bearable. But the director has the harshest criticism for it, considering it a “total failure.” However, surprisingly enough, while he may not consider the 1984 film a worthy piece, Longlegs actress Alicia Witt does, and is even grateful to Lynch for having cast her in the respective movie.

Now that "Dune: Part Two" has smashed box office milestones and assured the spice will keep flowing with "Dune 3," it seems the universe first created by author Frank Herbert will be part of our cultural landscape for some time. While we await Denis Villeneuve's next film adaptation, the real world is actually catching up with the futuristic tech of "Dune" -- specifically, with spacesuits that mimic the function of stillsuits from the novels and films.
In Herbert's 1965 novel "Dune," stillsuits are described as "a micro-sandwich — a high-efficiency filter and heat-exchange system." The suits, designed most effectively by the desert-dwelling Fremen people, allow wearers to traverse arid landscapes such as the planet Arrakis without running out of hydration. In the book, Herbert reveals that the suits not only recycle sweat, but that, "Urine and feces are processed in the thigh pads," so, yes, wearers are essentially drinking their recycled waste.

The Dune franchise has become a spectacular piece of cinema with Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of the Frank Herbert novels. Starring Timothee Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Zendaya, and Florence Pugh among so many other actors, the expected trilogy is already two movies down, with one more in the works. But before Villeneuve changed people’s mind about the spice fields of Arrakis and the Empire, there were a few other tries to bring this story to life.

The most successful of them, it terms of the audience getting a full length movie, was the one made by David Lynch. The 1984 adaptation of Dune was a critical and commercial failure, becoming one of the few films in David Lynch’s career that was not accepted by the people. As film writer Max Evry once said, it was the “black sheep of David Lynch’s filmography.

What Do We Know About Dune Prophecy? More than you may think. With the second part of Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of Frank Herbert’s classic science fiction novel a critical and box office success, it is going to be several years before we see the next feature film in the series, Dune Messiah. Luckily, production on the small-screen prequel /spin-off was concurrent with Dune: Part Two which means before the end of the year we are going to return to the fictional realms of Arrakis, Geidi Prime, and more via Max.

The original plan was for Villeneuve to helm the series in addition to his big screen directorial duties. The series, originally announced as Dune: The Sisterhood,...

Frank Herbert once said there is no real ending. It’s just where you stop the story. This is perhaps ironic given the author famously wrote six Dune novels without ever coming to a final satisfying conclusion to his millennia-spanning saga. But then knowing when and how to stop has always remained an elusive challenge for storytellers, even when they’re working at the height of their craft.
The history of cinema is littered with many great films that seemed to breeze right past the most obvious grace note in favor of underlining, expanding, or even subverting a theme or idea integral to the story. Whatever the motive, these choices sometimes can leave us wishing their films had concluded minutes earlier. Here are some films that we particularly wish ended when the story was already over.

We had learned last month that several Max Original shows are being rebranded as HBO Originals by Warner Bros. Discovery, with shows including “Welcome to Derry” now confirmed to air on HBO in addition to streaming on Max. “We felt like we had to delineate between an HBO show and a Max show,” HBO/Max’s Casey Bloys had explained earlier this summer.
Deadline brings us an update on the shift this morning, officially confirming that both “The Penguin” and “Dune: Prophecy” will also be rebranded as HBO Originals. And like “Welcome to Derry,” this means they’ll be airing on HBO in addition to streaming on Max.
Deadline explains, “It is part of a strategy to rebrand its highest profile titles into HBO Originals, giving them a linear airing on the premium cable network as well as a streaming bow.”

When Variety broke the news last month that HBO and Max content CEO Casey Bloys had changed the delineation between what an “HBO show” and a “Max show” is, there was an asterisk attached. Max’s big-budget, tentpole Warner Bros. IP projects like the “Harry Potter” TV show, the “It” prequel series “Welcome to Derry” and the Green Lantern adaptation “Lanterns” — were moving to under the HBO umbrella, but those coming before 2025 would not.
Here was the rub, much to Bloys’ chagrin: The two shows premiering this fall that had inspired Bloys to change his tune, “The Penguin” and “Dune: Prophecy,” couldn’t contractually make the switch. The shows had already been sold to international outlets as Max Originals, and those kinds of complicated deals are hard to unwind and revise.

Last month, Warner Bros. Discovery shifted three of its highest profile Max Originals – Harry Potter, Lanterns and It prequel Welcome To Derry – to become HBO Originals.
The company is now continuing this shift with the move of The Penguin and Dune: Prophecy.
Both shows will now premiere on HBO as well as launching on its Max streaming service.

A third "Dune" movie is in the works from Legendary and director Denis Villeneuve, but it may be a while until it reaches audiences: The Hollywood Reporter recently shared the news that his next film is due in theaters December 2026, and it may not even be a "Dune" sequel. Cinema fans should get excited for any new project from the filmmaker who's also brought us movies like "Blade Runner 2049" and "Arrival," but sci-fi fans understandably can't wait to see the director return to the world of Arrakis.
When Villeneuve's "Dune: Messiah" adaptation does appear, it'll follow a tricky chapter in Frank Herbert's book series. As /Film's Michael Boyle pointed out in a piece written after the third film's announcement, "Dune: Messiah" sidelines one of the franchise's most important characters, Rebecca Ferguson's now-villainous Lady Jessica. Like the prophetic Bene Gesserit, director Denis Villeneuve always seems to have his mind partly in the future. When it comes to casting his "Dune" films, based on the novels by Frank Herbert, he's managed to hire some of the biggest stars in the world to play bit parts all by pointing to what comes next. While many actors would jump at the chance to work with Villeneuve or be in that kind of star-studded production, there's also a lot involved and smaller roles might not feel as rewarding for huge, busy stars. So how did he manage to get Florence Pugh to play Princess Irulan in "Dune: Part Two"? By promising her some great things for her future playing the character, all pointing to a third film based on "Dune Messiah."

Say his name. The 81st Venice International Film Festival will kick off this year with the world premiere of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Tim Burton’s hotly-anticipated sequel to his 1988 comedy-horror hit.
The film will have its world premiere in Venice on August 28, screening out of competition.
Beetlejuice alums Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, and Catherine O’Hara re-team for the sequel, joined by Justin Theroux, Monica Bellucci, Jenna Ortega, and Willem Dafoe. The Warner Bros. release goes out in North America on September 6 and internationally beginning September 4.
“Beetlejuice Beetlejuice marks the long-awaited return of one of the most iconic characters of Tim Burton’s cinema, but also the happy confirmation of the extraordinary visionary talent and the masterly realization of one of the most fascinating auteurs of his time,” said Venice artistic director Alberto Barbera, noting the festival was “honored and proud to host the world premiere of a work that features a...

(Welcome to Ani-time Ani-where, a regular column dedicated to helping the uninitiated understand and appreciate the world of anime.)
There are plenty of anime shows that slowly grow over time, and their tone becomes more serious as the characters face stronger consequences. There are even a few shows with drastic twists so early in their run that they prove the need for the so-called "three-episode rule," like "Deca-Dence" revealing that the first episode was just a setup.
But in recent years, there hasn't been as drastic a tonal change as with "Delicious in Dungeon," a show that doesn't exactly pull the rug from under the audience, but rather organically reveals that the silly little comedy you've been watching was actually a brutal fantasy epic with big stakes and ancient conflicts coming to a head. The greatest trick this anime pulls is recreating the feeling of watching "Predator" for the first...

In a move that has electrified the sci-fi community, Warner Bros. has announced a December 18, 2026 release date for what is widely believed to be “Dune 3,” the highly anticipated conclusion to Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of Frank Herbert’s iconic novel series. This announcement comes on the heels of “Dune: Part Two’s” resounding success at the global box office.
Villeneuve, a three-time Oscar nominee, has been deeply immersed in the world of Arrakis since his 2021 adaptation of “Dune.” The sequel, released in 2024, has further cemented the franchise’s popularity, grossing approximately $711.8 million worldwide and earning critical acclaim with a 92% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes.
While Warner Bros. has not officially confirmed that the 2026 slot is for “Dune 3,” industry insiders suggest that the studio is eager to capitalize on the franchise’s momentum. The third installment is expected to adapt “Dune Messiah,” Herbert’s 1969 sequel, and bring closure to Villeneuve’s epic narrative.

And just like that, 2024 is already half over. Crazy, isn’t it? It feels like Christmas was just a minute ago, but here we are in the middle of summertime. Before we know it, the fall festivals will open up, the awards race will begin, and people will start debating the year’s best movies.
But here’s the thing – whenever people start talking about the best movies of the year, they always neglect all of the films that came out in the first half of the year. Studios know this, which is why high-profile, prestigious movies always bow in the fourth quarter of the year. So, to give these movies a bit of a spotlight, we here at JoBlo have decided to list the 10 best movies of 2024…so far (in no particular order).
