For a while, Zack Snyder was building a cinematic universe for the Netflix streaming service that centered on his zombie movie Army of the Dead. The film was quickly followed by a prequel called Army of Thieves, a sequel called Planet of the Dead was being written, and an anime series called Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas was in the works. But Snyder has since shifted his focus over to building a multi-media universe around his Rebel Moon sci-fi movies – and The Wrap has revealed that Netflix “quietly canceled” plans for an Army of the Dead Universe.
In an article on the Rebel Moon films that features interviews with Snyder and his wife and producing partner Deborah Snyder, The Wrap mentions, “Army of the Dead, a movie the Snyders made for Netflix before Rebel Moon, had a similarly ambitious (universe/franchise) plan, with several sequels and spin-offs in the works,...

I Survived a Marathon of Zack Snyder’s Unrated ‘Rebel Moon’ — But Still Can’t Tell You Why It Exists

I’ve never seen a line for the men’s room at the American Cinématheque as long as the one that confronted me at intermission of the marathon screening of Zack Snyder’s “Rebel Moon” this weekend. Meanwhile, there were so few women in attendance that the ladies’ room had practically no wait at all — a phenomenon that said everything about the crowd that had turned out for a big-screen look at the 373-minute director’s cut of Snyder’s two-part space opera.
To call this roided-out macro-edition of “Rebel Moon” a “director’s cut” is to willingly buy into Netflix’s egregious misrepresentation of a project that had been conceived to exist in two separate versions all along: a by-no-means-neutered and still-plenty-aggro PG-13 version, and now this, a much longer and far gorier cut, crammed with exploding-head carnage so repetitive it starts to be tiresome, along with great big gratuitous helpings of nudity,...

The world premiere for Kevin Costner’s “Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter Two” is back on the horizon. It’s just a little further out there than it initially had been.
The second “Horizon” film will make its world premiere out of competition at the tail-end of the 81st Venice International Film Festival of La Biennale di Venezia. It will screen on the final day of the festival, Saturday, September 7, 2024.
“Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter One” will screen there on the same day; it premiered at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival.
Debuting his second installment at Venice has been the “dream,” Costner said in a statement.
“My dream was always to show ‘Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter Two’ at the Venice Film Festival. The fact that now they have decided to show Chapter One earlier in the day and then the World Premiere of Chapter Two that evening shows not only...

Horizon: An American Saga is a passion project of Kevin Costner’s that has definitely shaken up his life. With talks about how his self-financing the project and lengthy shooting schedule affected his personal life and his hit show Yellowstone, Costner put a lot on the line for this series of films. The drama would not end by Chapter 1‘s release, as the lackluster performance of that first film at the box office prompted Warner Bros. to suspend the planned release of Chapter 2. This decision is a devastating blow for both Costner and fans of the first movie as the story is largely a setup for future chapters.
While it remains to be seen how and when the studio plans to release Chapter 2, according to The Hollywood Reporter, this next entry in the saga will be getting a world premiere at the Venice Film Festival out-of-competition on September 7, which is...

Part two of Kevin Coster‘s Horizon: An American Saga will premiere at the 2024 Venice Film Festival.
Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter Two, directed by and starring the Oscar-winning actor, boasts a star-studded supporting cast of Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Jena Malone and Danny Huston. It is set to get its world premiere in the out-of-competition section in Venice on Sept. 7.
Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter One will also be screened on the same day after the film received a 10-minute standing ovation in Cannes in May – though critics soon piled on Costner’s Western epic. Horizon was the first film in writer-director-star Costner’s four-picture gamble that he famously leveraged one of his homes to help finance (spending $38 million out of pocket). Chapter One is three hours and is largely focused on setting the stage — introducing a sprawling ensemble of characters.

Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2 will premiere at the 81st Venice Film Festival.
The second installment of the Civil War saga starring Costner alongside Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Jena Malone and Danny Huston, will screen out-of-competition on Saturday, September 7.
In an unprecedented move, Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1, which world premiered in rival festival Cannes in May, will be screened earlier in the day.
Venice’s decision to celebrate Chapter 2 comes just weeks after plans to launch the second installment theatrically August 16 in the U.S. were delayed after a sluggish box office performance for Chapter 1 following its July 4 release.
“My dream was always to show Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2 at the Venice Film Festival,” said Costner.

Kevin Costner’s “Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter Two” is set to world premiere at the Venice Film Festival in September after its U.S. release was pulled.
The Western epic’s second chapter was scrapped earlier this month from its planned Aug. 16 release in U.S. theaters after “Horizon’s” first installment, which carried a $100 million budget, earned only $11 million on its opening weekend.
“Chapter Two” — which Costner again directs and stars in alongside Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Jena Malone and Danny Huston — will bow on the Lido out-of-competition on Sept. 7. The world premiere will be preceded earlier the same day by a screening of the first “Horizon” movie, which launched from Cannes in May to a seven-minute standing ovation.
New Line Cinema’s “Horizon: An American Saga” is a multi-faceted depiction of the Civil War expansion and settlement of the American West. In addition to directing and starring,...

Stars: Kristen Stewart, Katy O’Brien, Jena Malone, Anna Baryshnikov, Ed Harris, Dave Franco | Written and Directed by Rose Glass
Lou (Kristen Stewart) lives a remotely modest life, working as a gym manager in a small town in New Mexico. She soon meets Jackie (Katy O’Brien), an ambitious bodybuilder with dreams of competing in Las Vegas. As the two grow closer, Lou’s family dynamics take over their lives, leading to disastrous consequences.
Let’s begin by stating the obvious — Rose Glass’ work in Love Lies Bleeding has changed the lesbian canon of cinema forever. Even in 2024, a shrewd, meaningful sapphic movie that doesn’t try to be sexual for the sake of pleasure is terribly hard to come by, with golden nuggets such as Carol and Disobedience passing muster. While these often-tragic love stories are all well and good, Glass has doubled down on her unique offerings by incorporating genre and nuanced scope,...

We’ve known all along that director Zack Snyder intended to release extended, R-rated director’s cuts of his movies Rebel Moon: Part One – A Child of Fire (read our review Here) and Rebel Moon: Part Two – The Scargiver (read our review of that one Here), which were rated PG-13 in their shorter form. Snyder said that there would be an hour of extra content in each of these director’s cuts – and now the Netflix listings for the director’s cuts, which sport the titles Rebel Moon – Chapter One: Chalice of Blood and Rebel Moon – Chapter Two: Curse of Forgiveness have revealed just how much more Rebel Moon we’re going to be getting when these versions of the movies drop onto the streaming service on August 2nd. Rebel Moon – Chapter One: Chalice of Blood has a running time of 3 hours and 24 minutes, a full 70 minutes longer than the A Child of Fire cut.

Matthew Macfadyen is looking back at his career and regretting not enjoying his experience filming 2005’s Pride and Prejudice.
The Succession alum played Mr. Darcy in Joe Wright’s adaptation of the classic Jane Austen novel playing opposite Kiera Knightley.
“I didn’t really [enjoy it],” Macfadyen said on CBS Mornings of his experience filming. “I feel bad saying that. There were moments I had a good time, but I wish I enjoyed it more. I wish I was less worried about it.”
He added, “I felt a bit miscast, like, ‘I’m not dishy enough. But it worked out.”
Despite not feeling like he was fit for the role, the Deadpool & Wolverine actor says, “The most flattering thing that happens to me now is people say, ‘Were you Mr. Darcy?’ It’s a good 20 years later. So I think, ‘I can’t be aging that badly.'”

Neither of Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon movies received an overly warm response from critics or, for that matter, sci-fi fans. Now, though, both Part One: A Child of Fire and Part Two: The Scargiver are getting a second chance on Netflix with R-Rated director's cuts.
According to the Justice League helmer, these will allow fans to "experience Rebel Moon the way I've envisioned it," a peculiar statement when the first two versions being released on streaming (rather than in theaters) should have meant Snyder had the creative freedom to do as he saw fit.

Netflix has shared the official Red Band trailer and key art for the two-part Rebel Moon – The Director’s Cut. Part One and Part Two will both debut on August 2, 2024.
Delve further into the mythology and madness of Zack Snyder’s epic sci-fi saga in the viciously sexier, bloodier world of Rebel Moon — Chapter One: Chalice of Blood and Rebel Moon – Chapter Two: Curse of Forgiveness.
In Snyder’s director’s cut, a peaceful settlement on a moon in the furthest reaches of the universe finds itself threatened by the armies of the tyrannical Regent Balisarius, and Kora (Sofia Boutella), a mysterious stranger living among the villagers, becomes their best hope for survival.
Tasked with finding trained fighters who will unite with her in making an impossible stand against the Motherworld, Kora assembles a small band of warriors — outsiders, insurgents, peasants, and orphans of war who share a common need for redemption and revenge.

After the release of Zack Snyder‘s space saga Rebel Moon, the director teased his true vision would come in R-rated director’s cut epics. Netflix has just released the official Red Band trailer to part one of Snyder’s Director’s Cuts, which features a bevy of blood, steamy sex scenes and even robot boobs. "Their wrath will be my vengeance." Netflix has launched the full red band trailer for the R-rated versions of Rebel Moon, the epic Zack Snyder sci-fi saga. Snyder teased this version last year when the first Part 1 opened in late 2023. This is the definitive, actually-what-he-wanted-to-make version of this movies - hard R in every sense. The new Director's Cut movies are titled Rebel Moon - Chapter One: Chalice of Blood and Rebel Moon - Chapter Two: Curse of Forgiveness. These an original Zack Snyder creation, a Star Wars-esque sci-fi adventure about a ragtag team of rebels. In a universe controlled by a corrupt militaristic government, the moon of Veldt is threatened by the forces of the Imperium, the army of the Mother World controlled by "Regent Balisarius". Sofia Boutella stars as Kora – a former member of the Imperium who rallies warriors from across the galaxy to fight back against them.

Netflix invites you further into the mythology and madness of Zack Snyder’s epic sci-fi saga in the viciously sexier, bloodier world of Rebel Moon with brand new Director’s Cuts Chapter One: Chalice of Blood and Chapter Two: Curse of Forgiveness on August 2.
Of particular note, the Rebel Moon Director’s Cuts will be rated “R,” packed with the bloody violence that wasn’t found in the PG-13 versions of the two movies now on Netflix. We’ve been promised “brutal bloody violence and gore, sexual content, graphic nudity and language.”

Chapter 2 of Kevin Costner’s Western epic Horizon: An American Saga won’t be released in August after all.
Nobody can accuse Kevin Costner of being lazy. He has financed, produced, co-written, directed and co–starred in Horizon: An American Saga, which was conceived as a four film series, each one pushing the three hour mark.
Chapter 1 was released in the UK last month, and the plan was to release Chapter 2 in August.
However, according to The Hollywood Reporter, the second film has been pulled from the release schedule. The reason given is the lacklustre box office reciepts for the first film, which took $20 million against a budget of $100 million.
It seems the plan is to encourage people to discover Horizon at home, so anticipation can build for the second film.

Yellowstone star Kevin Costner will return to the Western genre with his film series Horizon: An American Saga, the first part of which is set to arrive in theaters June 28. The first film in a planned four-arc installment premiered at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival to an 11-minute 40-second standing ovation, which brought the actor to tears.

The Dances With Wolves star revealed that production has begun for the third film and that he has plans to make a fourth. It’s been 550 days since a new episode of “Yellowstone” aired, which seems absurd for one of the most popular shows on television. But the behind-the-scenes drama since has been as fraught as the dynamics of the Dutton family, leading to the expulsion of the show’s star, Kevin Costner. His departure has been surrounded by a swirl of accusations which largely boil down to Costner demanding less time on set and “Yellowstone” mastermind Taylor Sheridan not wanting to play ball, which led to a schism and Costner’s send-off.
Why was Costner so eager to cut down on his “Yellowstone” commitments? Because he had a wildly ambitious vision for a four-part period Western epic film series named “Horizon,” that he would co-write, direct and star in — and, eventually, partially self-finance. After a mixed debut at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, the first film has debuted nationwide for audiences.

This year can’t be really considered fruitful for top-notch crime flicks. Yes, we’ve seen such decent gems as Jason Statham’s The Beekeeper and Glen Powell Hit Man that contained some elements of the genre, but the other ones were quite disappointing.
However, one incredibly captivating neo-noir gem was released this March, and it offered a unique combination of the genres that is now rarely seen on the big screen. We bet you still haven’t seen it; luckily, it begins streaming on Max already next month.
This movie gem starts by introducing us to Lou, an asocial gym manager who comes from a criminal family that is holding the whole town in its hands by possessing an illegal weapon business. She is forced to stay in town as she protects her weaker sister.
However, her life turns upside down when she meets bodybuilder Jackie, for whom she falls heavily in love.

Plot: An epic saga of the various groups who try to settle the ever-expanding horizon of the old West.
Review: Kevin Costner’s Horizon might be the most ambitious movie undertaking since Lord of the Rings. Think about it – Kevin Costner has sunk a huge chunk of his own personal fortune into making an epic Western saga, with a second movie only weeks away from hitting theatres, regardless of whether or not the first makes him any money. If that weren’t enough, he’s already started shooting pieces of the third film, and he’s sworn he’ll be making a fourth film as well. Given the scope of his ambitions, it’s hard to truly judge Horizon – Chapter 1 as a standalone film, with it so clearly part of a much bigger whole.

Kevin Costner is contemporary America’s No. 1 cowboy patriarch, the sort of actor who gives off a strong frontier-zaddy vibe while looking remarkably at home on a horse. He wasn’t the sole reason why Yellowstone became a massive hit, just the biggest; whether you love or loathe Taylor Sheridan’s ranch-style soap opera, it’s hard to argue with the sheer star power and earned sense of take-no-shit gravitas Costner brought to the role of John Dutton. That show not only gave Costner a renewed level of cultural currency — the man never stopped working,...

Kevin Costner recently joined his “Horizon: An American Saga” cast for a live recording of the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, and he said his planned four-movie saga differs from many Western films that have come before in that its female characters “drive the story in every plot line.” Costner, who co-wrote the franchise with Jon Baird, said he “couldn’t conceive of a scene that didn’t involve a woman” while shaping the story.
“Horizon” chronicles the journey of several characters during and after the Civil War as they settle the American West. Kevin Costner stars in the film opposite a sprawling ensemble cast, which includes Sienna Miller, Jena Malone, Isabelle Fuhrman, Abbey Lee and Ella Hunt. He told the “Happy Sad Confused” audience that he is aware his directorial efforts skew more towards men in their appeal, but he said strong women is what he’s most interested in.

There can be no doubt if there is one person bound and determined to keep Hollywood’s long history of Westerns alive, it has been Kevin Costner. Ok, well Clint Eastwood too.
And that has been true right from the beginning of Costner’s career, when he played the freewheeling scene stealer Jake in Lawrence Kasdan’s Silverado in 1985. He also made an impression as the title star of 1994’s Wyatt Earp. But his real mark on the genre has been not just as an actor but also as director and producer behind the scenes, first with his Best Picture Oscar-winning 1990 pic Dances with Wolves and 2003’s terrific Open Range with co-star Robert Duvall. The final The Hunger Games movie, Mockingjay Part 2, was released in 2015, and almost a decade later, lead star Jennifer Lawrence admits wanting to reprise her role as Katniss Everdeen. The famed dystopian movie franchise was based on the works of Suzanne Collins, and it remained one of the most definitive films of its genre.

Rose Glass’ sophomore feature Love Lies Bleeding will be available on digital next week. More details below.
In an age where a major studio movie starring two Oscar nominees debuted on digital after 17 days (that’d be The Fall Guy), it seems like a minor miracle that Rose Glass’ Love Lies Bleeding is only now becoming available on digital retailers.
You can own Love Lies Bleeding digitally from 2nd July. Glass directed the film and also wrote the script together with Weronika Tofilska. It’s the British filmmaker’s second film, following on the heels of the immensely disturbing but stunningly-made horror character study, Saint Maud. Seriously, if you haven’t seen that one yet for some reason, do track it down now. Also, brace yourself for an intense evening’s entertainment.

Will audiences care about the world of “A Quiet Place” without John Krasinski or Emily Blunt?
That’ll be the presiding question as “A Quiet Place: Day One,” a prequel story in Paramount’s post-apocalyptic horror series, hits theaters on Friday. The film, which takes place a while before the Abbotts (the family at the center of the prior two movies) were forced into hiding from terrifying, sound-hunting creatures, is expected to collect a solid $40 million to $50 million from 3,700 theaters in its opening weekend. The prequel cost $67 million to produce.
Lupita Nyong’o and Joseph Quinn star in “A Quiet Place: Day One” — set during the early stages of a New York City alien invasion — while “Pig” filmmaker Michael Sarnoski took over directing duties from Krasinski. Though spinoffs usually don’t do as much business as direct sequels, “A Quiet Place: Day One” is impressively eyeing a similar debut to its franchise predecessors.

Despite having won an Oscar for best director in 1991, Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1 is just the fourth film that the star has directed, and the first time he’s stepped behind the camera in more than 20 years.
Costner landed an Academy Award for his directorial debut, Dances With Wolves, which he followed with 1997’s The Postman and 2003’s Open Range; since then he’s largely focused on his acting and producing projects, but said he knew he needed to come back to the director’s chair for Horizon.
“Sometimes you wonder if you can still ride the bike, but what I knew was I believed so much in my story that I really was the one that needed to direct this,” Costner told The Hollywood Reporter at the film’s Los Angeles premiere on Monday. “I didn’t want to come away not bringing everything home...

In recent weeks, Kevin Costner embarked on a multicity tour promoting Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1, the first of four big-budget Westerns that he directs and stars in. He appeared on local morning shows, did press junkets and visited at least one military installation.
Costner also taped personal messages for various theater chains, all of which are based in America’s heartland. That included sitting down with Greg Marcus, the affable CEO of Marcus Theatres, for a custom Horizon video that’s airing in Marcus cinemas.
It’s the middle of the country that Costner and Warner Bros. are counting on to boost Horizon throughout the Fourth of July corridor and beyond. Last year, the indie film Sound of Freedom opened on July Fourth, coming out of nowhere to become one the biggest hits of summer thanks to Middle America. In the more than 20 years that have passed since Kevin Costner last stood behind the camera and delivered his third feature as a director, 2003's well-received "Open Range," a lot has changed within the studio system. For one thing, there are fewer independent studios in operation these days compared to the turn of the century, when the very idea of Disney absorbing 20th Century Fox in a hostile takeover or Paramount Pictures desperately seeking a merger would've felt laughable. For another, the advent of streaming has completely upended the status quo, transforming bravura spectacles crafted specifically for theaters — even one directed by the legendary Francis Ford Coppola — into an exception rather than the rule. And, of course, ever-volatile moviegoer habits combined with a once-in-a-generation pandemic have further convinced industry bigwigs to embrace risk-averse strategies, spurning auteur-driven passion projects in favor of the safer shores of superheroes and other franchises.

It would be unreasonable to expect Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1, as the first of a planned four-film series about the expansion of the American West, to tie all of its narrative threads together. But Kevin Costner’s grand opus gets off to an inauspicious start, with its various storylines often muddled by the consistently haphazard editing, to the point that it becomes difficult to tell how many of the countless characters are related to one another.
If the audience is meant to be privy to where things are heading, there should at least be some clearly defined motivations or character development, perhaps even something resembling narrative momentum. But Horizon Chapter 1 is all table-setting, with the stories lacking in polish and dramatic momentum and the characters never developed beyond archetypes. There’s even little sense of either geographic or temporal scope to make this entry feel like part...

Zack Snyder has developed an infamous reputation for being divisive among fans. While no one can deny that he is an auteur with a specific stylish approach to filmmaking, his work has not necessarily impressed the fans and the general public. His first two films Dawn of The Dead and 300 remain his most beloved works which showcased the best of Snyder as a director.

The latter was an adaptation of the comic book series of the same name by Frank Miller and Lynn Varley. The director approached Warner Bros. for the adaptation and had bold ideas on how to execute the film. While initially skeptical about the film, Snyder’s one-take sequence that he shot for the film impressed studio heads big time which led to the film getting greenlit.

When Zack Snyder’s Sucker Punch premiered in 2011, it was met with a polarizing reception. Critics and audiences were off-put by its unique style, ambitious narrative structure, and the way it blended genres. As someone who initially viewed the film through a less mature lens, I found myself unimpressed by its convoluted plot and perceived lack of substance. Hell, I even watched it twice upon release to make sure I wasn’t missing anything. As time went on, I had moved on from the stale taste it bestowed upon me. So much so that I had even skipped any future Snyder offerings, yes, this includes his Dceu output. Maybe I’ll get to those one day. Who knows? However, one thing I do know is for certain: Zack Snyder loves himself a director’s cut of his films. Recently, he has expressed his determination to give his first original film the ol’ Snyder Cut treatment,...

This post contains spoilers for "Donnie Darko."
Richard Kelly's "Donnie Darko" opens with a nightmarish conversation in the dark. An ominous-looking rabbit named Frank (James Duval) warns a young Donnie (Jake Gyllenhaal) about the world's imminent end — in 28 days, six hours, 42 minutes, and 12 seconds, to be precise. Although Frank looks more like a man in a rabbit costume than a tall bipedal rabbit, there is something eerily otherworldly about his presence, with the suit's soulless eyes adding a touch of the macabre. Since this fateful meeting, Donnie is guided by Frank towards a particular end, and the volatile, melancholy teen undergoes several rites of passage over the span of 28 days. Frank's mysterious influence over Donnie is just one baffling aspect of the film, as the mind-boggling nature of the events invites varied interpretations, often blurring the lines between reality and dreams, and ones where the two overlap.

Kevin Costner announced via social media on Thursday that he and the hit television series “Yellowstone” are officially through. The 69-year-old Oscar, Emmy, and Golden Globe winner is deep in promo mode for his massive “Horizon: An American Saga” project, and still circling his wagons to get the third and fourth chapters financed and filmed. As such, he told fans, “I just want to reach out and let you know that after this long year and a half of working on ‘Horizon’ and doing all the things that that’s required and thinking about ‘Yellowstone’, that beloved series that I love, that I know you love. I just realized that I’m not going to be able to continue, Season 5 or into the future.”
He added that the modern-day Western created by Taylor Sheridan and John Linson, which inspired two prequel series and has several other spinoffs in development, “was something that really changed me.
