Joss Whedon has been labeled quite a controversial figure in Hollywood. After numerous allegations of being verbally abusive towards his co-workers, the director was alienated by the industry and has been in exile since. However, during his prime, he took on some very successful projects, including his time with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Heading the first two Avengers films, he has been credited for how iconic they are, even though fans understand the horrible things he allegedly did.

"Avengers: Age of Ultron" climaxes with the Marvelous heroes fighting the titular tin man and his army of duplicates in fictional European nation Sokovia. Ultron has built a giant engine beneath a Sokovian city to lift it off the ground, intending to slam it back onto the Earth and cause a mass extinction event. "When the dust settles, the only thing living in this world will be metal."
This scheme is not inspired by a Marvel comic, but rather another film about a robot army and floating city: Hayao Miyazaki's "Castle in the Sky," the first film made by Studio Ghibli. (Though "Nausicaä Of The Valley Of The Wind" brought Ghibli's soon-to-be founders together.) "Castle In The Sky," set in a Wales-like fantasy world, follows orphans Pazu and Sheeta as they search for Laputa, a long-lost advanced civilization.
Laputa is like Atlantis if it soared above the clouds instead of collapsing beneath the waves.

Disney has confirmed that its $2 billion-plus Frozen IP will get a three-quel in 2027. Disney exec Jennifer Lee, who is also one of the directors of Frozen and Frozen II, released a concept art of the film at the ongoing D23 event. The film was inspired by Christian Andersen’s old fairy tale The Snow Queen. The two films grossed a total of $2.76 billion at the box office.

Lee also hinted at a potential fourth film in the franchise, which obviously draws a comparison to Pixar’s seminal four-part film franchise, Toy Story. From the numbers and the success of Inside Out 2 & Despicable Me 4, the Frozen franchise is likely to surpass the $3 billion-grossing franchise.

Do studios just have no earthly idea how to market their latest movies and shows anymore, or is it the children viewers who are wrong? That age-old debate rears its ugly head practically every time a highly-anticipated title ends up underperforming in theaters or otherwise failing to reach its intended audience. Netflix is notorious for acquiring some of the buzziest and most exciting offerings ... only to promptly bury them under an avalanche of vague, algorithmically-defined parameters that ensures they'll never see the light of day (or even just the streamer's main page) again. Genndy Tartakovsky’s Fixed gets the Coyote vs Acme treatment at Warner Bros. after the studio decided not to release it. With the relaunch of Warner Bros. Animation, the studio was supposed to offer a global platform for animated films. However, Fixed is the latest in the list of animated films passed on by the studio.

WB earlier abandoned the Scoob! prequel, Scoob Holiday Haunt!, and Coyote vs. Acme. They also passed on Bruce Timm’s Batman: Caped Crusader, which luckily found a platform in Prime Video. Some of the live-action films also got the same treatment, like Brendan Fraser’s Batgirl, which was a completed project.

Hayao Miyazaki has several masterpieces under his wing, two of which have won the Oscars. In fact, among the 13 Oscars received by Japanese movies, two belong to the legendary Studio Ghibli founder. But the director is only human and has moments of error.
However, even Miyazaki’s errors find their way into becoming right, and fans love the man’s zeal. In a watercolor illustration book for Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, Miyazaki has poured his heart out about everything that plagued his mind while creating the illustrations.

Here in the States, we are very much enjoying your raucous Northern Irish film Kneecap, which our own Olga Artemyeva described as "bold, entertaining and boisterous - both as a cinematic piece and as a statement. It is also genuinely hilarious." Frankly, we don't have anything homegrown to offer in return, so may I recommend something completely different? Now playing in UK and Ireland, Hayao Miyazaki's My Neighbor Totoro is a perfect picture to watch in a cinema, where you can become enraptured by the gorgeous animation and delightful story: "Two girls move to the country to be near their ailing mother" and "have adventures with the wondrous forest spirits who live nearby," according to an official synopsis. So, just like Kneecap, only with less...

Zendaya and Robert Pattinson are in early talks to star in “The Drama,” helmed and written by “Dream Scenario” director Kristoffer Borgli.
Project details are still being kept under wraps, but rumors suggest it’s a romance that takes an unexpected turn before the couple’s big day.
This marks another film collaboration between A24 and Square Peg, with others including “Hereditary,” “Midsommar,” “Dream Scenario” and the upcoming films “Death of a Unicorn” starring Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega, and “Eddington” starring Joaquin Phoenix, Pedro Pascal and Emma Stone.
It’s been a big year for Zendaya, who led this year’s hits “Dune: Part Two” and “Challengers.” She’s next set to reprise her Emmy and Golden Globe winning role as Rue Bennett in the third season of HBO’s “Euphoria.”
Pattinson will next be seen in Bong Joon-ho’s science fiction drama “Mickey 17,” due out in January.

Studio Ghibli films aren’t famous because of their beautiful backgrounds and innocent characters. They are renowned worldwide because of how they tackle serious issues while simultaneously portraying the beauty of a slow life. No other animation studio has been able to capture the same essence except one Disney movie.

From the surface, it looks like a cartoon that promotes family values, but fans have been able to find its themes, storytelling, and backgrounds very similar to Ghibli films.

The world of animation has progressed drastically in the many decades that have seen time flow. Studios such as Disney and Hayao Miyazaki’s Ghibli have always been on top of their game with such media and continue to grow as well. In a time when live-action adaptations find themselves dominating industries, animation is finding its own unique ways to hold onto the foundations that captivate not only younger audiences but also older ones.

For the longest time, both studios have been competing and also working hand in hand to spread the beauty that is created through the work of animation. Both studios have worked towards bringing out some of the most astonishing masterpieces when it comes to animated media but Miyazaki may give Ghibli Studios the upper hand.

The great Japanese animator and co-founder of Studio Ghibli, whose 1988 masterpiece My Neighbour Totoro is back in UK and Irish cinemas, embraces the universe yet never shies away from life’s grittier elements
Is Japanese film-maker Hayao Miyazaki “the greatest family entertainer of our time”? That was the conclusion I reached about the writer-director behind such animated wonders as Kiki’s Delivery Service (1989), Spirited Away (2001) and Howl’s Moving Castle (2004) when reviewing Miyazaki’s 2008 charmer Ponyo in this paper. A few years later, while compiling a list of the 25 best films for children – a list that ranged from Chaplin’s 1921 classic The Kid to Nora Twomey’s 2017 beauty The Breadwinner – I wrote that “it’s hard to decide which of Hayao Miyazaki’s matchless animations to include in this list”.
Born in Tokyo in 1941, Miyazaki joined Toei Animation in 1963 and co-founded Studio Ghibli in 1985, creating a stream of world-beating animations, any one...

Japanese indie record label Kakubarhythm's official YouTube channel has started streaming a music video for a newly-recorded 2024 version of "Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind" sung by actor Narumi Yasuda . In 1983, Yasuda won the grand prize out of 7,500 applicants in the image girl contest for the 1984 anime film of the same name directed by Hayao Miyazaki. The opportunity to sing the image song for the film was a side prize for the grand prize. The song was originally composed by acclaimed Japanese artist Haruomi Hosono . It was released as Yasuda's debut single on January 25, 1984, and peaked at #10 in Oricon's weekly single charts, becoming the biggest hit in her singing career. Though the song was not used in the film, it was recognized as one of the most well-known anime songs of the year. On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the song's release this year, Yasuda...

Whenever Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli join hands, the planet is treated with extraordinary masterpieces. Since the 1980s, the duo has given multiple hits. All of his movies have been critically acclaimed. He won the Oscars with The Boy and the Heron. But there is another particular movie that could have won the Oscar.
Fans believe that The Wind Rises should have won the Oscar in 2014. Miyazaki’s work left everyone stunned. Unfortunately, Frozen won in the Best Animated Feature category, beating The Wind Rises. Frozen was also a great movie, but it was one scene from Miyazaki’s movie that won everyone’s hearts.

This post contains spoilers for "Howl's Moving Castle."
The Studio Ghibli aesthetic blueprint evokes a sense of nostalgia that is comforting to cling onto. Here, lush green meadows bloom with fantastical flowers, the innocence of childhood merges with the growing pains of adolescence, and the everyday wonders of sharing a warm weal or talking to a loved one cultivate a safe space like no other. When Hayao Miyazaki weaves a Ghibli tale, the spiritual and mundane come together to pave the path for surreal, unforgettable adventures, such as the one Chihiro embarks on in "Spirited Away," and Kiki is nudged towards in "Kiki's Delivery Service." Although every Miyazaki-helmed Ghibli offering is visually stunning; they transcend their singular aesthetic identity with complex, layered themes, tugging at the essential aspects of being human and what it means to embrace or turn away from this innate humanity.

This article appears in the new issue of Den Of Geek magazine. You can read all of our magazine stories here.
During the earliest production stages of an animated movie, it is common to begin the process with a series of exploratory paintings.
“They are abstract and loose and just delicious paintings,” says Chris Sanders, the director of films such as Lilo & Stitch, How to Train Your Dragon, and The Croods. During the earliest production stages of an animated movie, it is common to begin the process with a series of exploratory paintings.
“They are abstract and loose and just delicious paintings,” says Chris Sanders, the director of films such as Lilo & Stitch, How to Train Your Dragon, and The Croods. But something special happened during the production of Sanders’ latest film, The Wild Robot, while he was sitting in a meeting and being shown some of these conceptual paintings.

Humble Beginnings and Steady Growth Japanese animation has been around since the very early days of film. The oldest known animated filmstrip from the country is believed to have been made around 1907, and the oldest theatrical piece of Japanese animation dates back to the year 1917. But it wasn’t until the 1960s that anime started to shape itself into what it is today. Around this time, shows like ‘Astro Boy’ and ‘Sally the Witch’ featured characters with big eyes, and cartoonish yet realistically-proportioned designs, which would become general hallmarks of anime. Japan would continue to produce animated series for decades to come, and the unique elements present in them would attract a worldwide fandom. However, in English-speaking countries, including the United States, it would be quite a long time until anime got the mainstream recognition it has now. Following its victory in the Best Animated Feature category at the 2024 Oscars, The Boy and the Heron will finally be landing on streaming. The movie is set to arrive on Max, the streaming service from HBO, on September 6th.
Additionally, the film is available as a limited-edition Steelbook 4K Ultra HD set as well as on Blu-ray + DVD and 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray.
The Boy and the Heron was directed by Hayao Miyazaki, the legendary co-founder of Japan’s Studio Ghibli. While the animation house has produced a number of projects over the last decade, this film was the first since 2013’s The Wind Rises to be directed by Miyazaki himself.
The English dub for the movie, advertised as the animation master’s final film, boasts an impressive number of A-list actors, including an impossible to identify Robert Pattinson, Florence Pugh (voicing both the younger and much older version of the same character), Christian Bale,...

Hayao Miyazaki’s Oscar-winning “The Boy and the Heron” will make its U.S. streaming debut on Warner Bros. Discovery’s Max in September.
The Studio Ghibli film will be available starting Friday, Sept. 6, exclusively on Max in the U.S. The hand-drawn, semi-autobiographical animated movie from Miyazaki is the first feature film in 10 years that he both wrote and directed. “The Boy and the Heron” joins the rest of the Studio Ghibli library on Max as part of the streamer’s exclusive multiyear U.S. deal extension announced earlier this year.
Outside the U.S. and Japan, “The Boy and the Heron” will be available on Netflix under a renewal inked this spring for the entire Studio Ghibli film catalog. Netflix has not yet set a premiere date for “The Boy and the Heron.”

Skybound, the comic book and media company founded by The Walking Dead co-creator Robert Kirkman, is on the lookout for the next Hayao Miyazaki.
Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that the company is developing a reality competition series that will focus on the search for the next animation visionary. Think America’s Next Top Model or American Idol but for animation geeks and masters.
The venture will be a co-production with Diga Studios, the banner behind unscripted shows such as Selling the Hamptons, The Flipping El Moussas, the magic-oriented Big Trick Energy, and Million Dollar Beach House. The company also produced the Scream TV series, which ran on MTV from 2015-19.
The series is one of the first projects by Skybound’s recently launched unscripted division, which is headed by Brent Jacoby under head of TV Glenn Geller. And it comes after last fall’s acquisition of Spike & Mike’s Festival of Animation,...

The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures has been a commercial hit and a critical misfire.
In an era of declining Oscar telecast ratings, the new institution’s robust ticket sales — there have been nearly 2 million visitors since it opened in September 2021 — have turned it into a major Los Angeles draw, bolstered the Academy’s coffers and prompted inaugural museum director Bill Kramer’s ascension to CEO of AMPAS, the parent organization. Yet except for Regeneration, its lauded deep-dive showcase of Black American filmmaking through the early 1970s, the exhibits have been discourse duds, more fit for the local tourist attraction it is than the world-class institution it aims to be.
There’s been exuberant fan service (a sprawling tribute to Japanese animation master Hayao Miyazaki) and dutiful minor-key spotlights on illustrious yet lower-profile luminaries like editor Thelma Schoonmaker and director Oscar Micheaux. Then there was the museum’s debut survey of the film industry,...

Rotten Tomatoes does not measure the quality of a movie, no matter what your favorite YouTuber says. What it does measure is the percentage of critics who think a movie is at least decent. The higher the Rotten Tomatoes score, the firmer the consensus is that a movie is at least "good," rather than, say, an exact quality score of the title.
Still, even if it doesn't exactly measure quality, a Rotten Tomatoes score is quite useful to get an idea of whether a movie has a wide appeal or if it's polarizing (meaning different people have vastly different opinions on the title). When it comes to anime, even if the genre is becoming more and more accessible, more mainstream, and more accepted, there are only four anime movies with a 100% certified fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
What's curious is how different, yet very similar, the titles are. That's because,...

Henry Cavill’s career in the past few years has had a lot of highs and lows. After being at the top of his professional life, working as both Superman in the DC Universe, and The Witcher for Netflix, he lost it all in a matter of months. Fans were forced to watch as one of the most talented and beloved actors was underappreciated by Hollywood over and over again.

The Oscars’ history of some of the most famous franchises still makes no sense to many fans. Harry Potter never won a single Academy Award despite being a visual extravaganza spread over 8 films. Of the eight, six films were nominated for 12 categories, winning none. Meanwhile, even MCU managed to bag 4 Oscars out of its 27 nominations over the years.

Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy And The Heron is coming to DVD, Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray in the UK: more here.
The work of Hayao Miyazaki, and indeed the broader Studio Ghibli, isn’t brilliantly represented on the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray physical media in the UK. As such, happy to take good news where we can find it there, and in this case, it’s that Miyazaki’s most recent film – The Boy And The Heron – is heading to the format in September.
This, of course, was Miyazaki’s coming out of retirement movie, released last year to (expected!) great acclaim. It was distributed in the UK by Elysian, and to its credit, it’s now behind the physical media outing for the movie as well.
The Boy And The Heron will be on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray over here therefore on 23rd September. You can find more information on the release,...

In the 23 years since the Best Animated Feature category was introduced at the Oscars, Pixar has dominated, racking up an impressive 11 wins from 18 nominations; its last victory was in 2021 for “Soul.” Walt Disney Studios has four trophies to show for its lucky 13 nominations while DreamWorks has gone 2 for 14, including the first-ever Oscar awarded for Best Animated Feature, which went to “Shrek.” Studio Ghibli also has a pair of prizes, and is the reigning champ with “The Boy and the Heron.” (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2025 Oscar predictions for Best Animated Feature.)

One of the most vital skills that an animator can hone is a sense for how gravity will bear down on their subjects in realistic and legible ways. A character who weighs nothing can appear stripped of physicality, and as a result, the viewer regards them, consciously or otherwise, as invulnerable.
Miyazaki Hayao, over the past half-century, has conquered gravity. The Japanese artist’s drawings feel like people because they move like people; they’re believable because they’re capable of being hurt. Never is this more apparent than when two of his characters embrace, the total catharsis of human bodies colliding expressed in a tight knot of stumbling feet and clasped arms—that weight, that vulnerability, shared between them. This ability to render subjects with such convincing tactility is only one reason why Miyazaki is possibly our greatest living animator, and his latest, The Boy and the Heron—a fable about,...

In the world of anime, Hayao Miyazaki’s Studio Ghibli unarguably holds an incredibly strong presence, having expanded its portfolio among the likes of fan-favorite projects like The Boy and the Heron and Howl’s Moving Castle. That said, what if this respective studio worked on taming animated projects for the Stranger Things and Harry Potter franchises?

Director David Gordon Green’s “Nutcrackers,” starring Ben Stiller, will be the opening night film at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival. Rebel Wilson’s directorial debut “The Deb” will close the 49th edition.
“Nutcrackers” follows Stiller as a straight-laced, work-obsessed man who suddenly becomes the caregiver for his orphaned nephews. It will screen on Sept. 5 at Roy Thomson Hall as part of the Gala program. “The Deb,” an original musical comedy about two teenage cousins who search to find dates to the Debutante Ball in a small Australian town, will premiere on Sept. 15 at Roy Thomson Hall.
“This year’s festival is shaping up to be a star-studded event with highly anticipated films that reflect the world around us with humour and empathy, like our opening and closing night selections, ‘Nutcrackers’ and ‘The Deb,’” said Anita Lee, chief programming officer of TIFF. “TIFF aims to showcase both returning...

Nutcrackers, David Gordon Green’s heartfelt comedy starring Ben Stiller, is set to open the 2024 Toronto Film Festival on Sept. 5.
The TIFF opener — marking Stiller’s first starring role in a movie since Mike White’s Brad’s Status and Noah Baumbach’s Netflix family drama The Meyerowitz Stories in 2017 — will have a world premiere at Roy Thomson Hall, which is filled with ordinary moviegoers (and not only industry people as in Cannes and Venice).
Written by Leland Douglas, Nutcrackers follows Mike (Stiller), a straight-laced workaholic who has to travel to rural Ohio to care for his four nephews after their parents die in a car accident. After weeks of farm-life mayhem, Mike realizes he won’t have to find a new home for the orphaned children. They found a new home for him.

One of the main reasons that Oda-Sensei’s work has received such widespread appreciation is due to its protagonist, Monkey D. Luffy, who is beloved by the fans. The reasons are diverse, ranging from his goofy personality to following his childhood dream of becoming the King of Pirates.
Nevertheless, fans are relieved that Oda-Sensei has decided to make his adventure series, inspired by other work, which has got everyone excited and hooked on to it for 25 years and counting.

The 2008 Ponyo movie packed an incredible cast and characters that helped breathe life into director Hayao Miyazaki’s screenplay. Having produced works for several animation studios in the past, Ponyo was Miyazaki’s eighth-produced project for Studio Ghibli, an animation he co-founded. For new anime audiences, Hayao Miyazaki is best known for the 2023 The Boy and the Heron. Ponyo centered around its eponymous character. The Japanese animated film was originally released in Japan on July 19, 2008. A year later, on August 14, 2009, an English-language version was released theatrically in the United States. Ponyo grossed a whopping $204.8 million...

Hayao Miyazaki is considered to be the greatest storyteller of this generation, known for his iconic anime movies that have taken him and his Studio Ghibli to the top of the world. His notable works like Spirited Away, Ponyo, and his recent Academy Award-winning project The Boy and the Heron have earned him global fame.

Interestingly, the film still captivates the otaku community as it continues to bloom and feature complex themes with unforgettable storytelling in medieval Japan during the 14th century.

At the Annecy International Animation Film Festival 2024, we met with the executives of Fortiche , the French animation studio that gave life to the acclaimed show Arcane , set in the League of Legends universe. After presenting their new project — Penelope of Sparta — we met Pascal Charrue, co-founder of Fortiche, to discuss their anime inspirations and learn more about the studio. From the “shorter” music videos to a longer format of a series, how did you all manage to scale up your production? Pascal Charrue: Fortiche Studio has gone through several transformative phases in its development. Our founders — Pascal Charrue, Jérôme Combe, and Arnaud Delord — each brought diverse yet complementary expertise to the table. Initially, we focused on producing advertisements, music videos, and various gaming cinematics. A significant milestone was our contribution to the Gorillaz music video, which showcased our ability to meet international creative standards. Our turning point came when Christian Linke,...

“First time in a long time I didn’t hear any buzz at all about a July 4th blockbuster movie,” a friend texted me last week. His message struck me as odd, since I can’t turn a corner without being bombarded by mutant Minions: The yellow pranksters keep showing up on billboards, product tie-ins, pop-up ads. My friend is engaged to be married, with a baby on the way, but he’s not a parent yet, and he’s clearly not thinking like one.

There is little doubt about the fact that Genndy Tartakovsky is an animation genius. From the greatest hits of most millennial childhoods to critically acclaimed adult animated shows like Primal, Tartakovsky’s footprint on the industry and popular culture is undeniable as it is evergreen.

Tartakovsky’s 2003 offering that depicted the Clone Wars preceded the CGI show by about five years and covered some of the greatest hits of Anakin’s time as a Padawan, and his ascension to Jedi knighthood. However, despite how brilliant the series was, its removal from the Star Wars canon probably caused Tartakovsky to declare that he would never be returning to the IP.

Studio Ghibli is often considered synonymous with filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki, director of the studio's best movies. Many would argue Miyazaki's works are some of the best animated movies ever, so it's natural that he casts a shadow over the studio he helped build.
However, the studio actually has multiple founders: the late director Isao Takahata, producer (and current studio chairman) Toshio Suzuki, and Yasuyoshi Tokuma. The latter's company Tokuma Shoten offered the foundation for Ghibli and was the studio's parent company from 1985 to 2005.
Miyazaki was already a prolific animator pre-Ghibli and acquainted with Suzuki and Takahata. The three first made a movie together in 1984: "Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind." Miyazaki directed, Takahata produced, and Suzuki was the one who first connected Miyazaki with Tokuma Shoten. As a bonus, composer Joe Hisaishi (who went on to be Ghibli's in-house composer) also scored "Nausicaä."

What a time to be a Studio Ghibli fan! In recent months we've celebrated the legendary Japanese animation outfit's The Boy And The Heron scooping top honours at the BAFTAs, Oscars, and Golden Globes, seen the Royal Shakespeare Company bring My Neighbour Totoro beautifully to life at the Barbican Centre, and watched Spirited Away get the West End treatment too. Now, the Elysian Film Group and Anonymous Content have announced that they're collaborating to bring Totoro back to the big screen this summer with a re-release of Miyazaki's seminal 1988 family favourite in cinemas across the UK and Ireland. Check out the beautiful new quad poster for the film below;

In the moonlit magnificence of anime, animation, and filmmaking, Hayao Miyazaki stands apart as the director and co-founder of Studio Ghibli. At his most critical, Miyazaki has been open about his disdain for the popular anime medium. While the “Anime was a mistake” meme, that fans like to reference, closely mirrors his actual words, there’s a lot more context and history behind his criticism.
Miyazaki’s films essentially highlight how magical worlds unfold before young protagonists, while their parents, preoccupied with adult concerns, remain oblivious to the wonders blooming around them. Even though the magic in his movies is almost tangible for children, Miyazaki believes too much anime could ‘gobble’ children up, stealing their time and freedom unduly.

Hayao Miyazaki has a reputation for being one of the most renowned animators not only in Japan but throughout the world. The image set by Ghibli Studios is one worth commending and it leaves an impression of great character and world understanding, as well as the audience’s perception of the art. He has often been compared to some of the biggest animators and filmmakers.

Adapted by director Yoshiyuki Momose (a former animator at Studio Ghibli) and screenwriter Yoshiaki Nishimura (a former producer at Studio Ghibli) from a popular British children’s novel of the last decade, the Studio Ponoc production The Imaginary undermines much of its breathless talk of imagination by transparently and schematically tracing the footsteps of children’s entertainment titans. Its opening act introduces us to a pastel-colored, Ghibliesque English city where a lonely yet free-spirited little girl named Anna lives with her hardworking single mother in an adorably quaint family-run bookshop. She is quite imaginative: we know this because we see literal magic emanate out of her CD player when she puts on her favorite song, before flashily animated fantasy sequences literally morph her real-world surroundings into colorful (if generic) fantasy settings. First off: a Christmas land with reindeer, sleds, and yetis in the attic.

China’s box office totalled $3.4bn (Rmb 23.9bn) in the first six months of 2024, down 9% year-on-year despite a strong start at Chinese New Year, according to consultancy Artisan Gateway.
Ticket sales from the first half of the year were also the lowest since 2016, according to additional figures from Maoyan Research Institute, a subsidiary of service provider Maoyan Entertainment. This excludes 2020 and 2022 when cinemas were closed for lengthy periods due to the Covid pandemic.
