For more than 15 years studios have done their best to avoid releasing their new movies on the second weekend of a Marvel movie. This weekend we learned the reason why. Read on for the weekend box office report.
As expected, Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman‘s “Deadpool and Wolverine” won its second weekend in a row, topping the box office with an estimated $97 million, down 54% from its record-setting opening weekend. Not only did “Deadpool and Wolverine” cross the $300 million milestone domestically this past weekend, but with $395.6 million grossed in North America, it’s only a day away from hitting the $400 million benchmark, so the race is on to see if it can catch up to Pixar’s “Inside Out 2.”
Globally, the movie has passed the $800 million mark, adding another $110.5 million overseas this weekend for an international total of $428.5 million. With $824.1 million global, it has already passed the worldwide grosses...

You never know what you’re going to get from an M. Night Shyamalan film. You might, occasionally, still get the patient, thoughtful auteur who made The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, and last year’s Knock at the Cabin. But more often than not, you’ll get some flavor of the weird, schlocky, Corman-esque scamp who made The Visit and Glass, high concepts executed with stylish conviction but let down by gloriously messy storytelling.
Trap is largely the work of the Shyamalan who brought made those latter films. It has a great concept that crumbles to pieces before you’re done asking the very first question about the screenplay’s paper-thin grasp on the logistics of the real world. But there’s almost enough genuinely enthralling intensity here to patch over the film’s weaknesses.

One of the most talked-about films at the moment is the critically acclaimed horror thriller Longlegs. Starring scream queen Maika Monroe as an FBI agent given the task of tracking down an occult serial killer, this film is easily one of the best horror flicks to be released this year. And guess what? Moviegoers have the chance to see it for free in theaters! But wait... There's a catch!
Not every moviegoer will be able to see this box-office hit for free. For a limited time only, Neon is offering free tickets to see Longlegs in theaters only to people who were born on the 14th of any month. If you haven't seen the horror thriller yet, you're probably confused about the importance of this date. Of course, we're not going to spoil its significance here. You'll just have to go see Longlegs in theaters to find out.
The promotion only lasts from Aug.

There are a lot of Stephen King movies, and that's a trend that shows no sign of slowing down — a new adaptation of "Salem's Lot" is due out on Max sometime this year, while "Longlegs" director Osgood Perkins has a take on King's short story "The Monkey" hitting theaters next year. We all know about the quantity — but what about the quality? I'm a Stephen King nerd, and in all honesty, I enjoy the vast majority of his movies — but I'll also admit some of them are duds (I'm looking at you, "Cell"). Horror is a beloved genre by many, but for a long time, some movie critics felt it was a gutter; a seedy place where no light could break through. As a result, there are some King movies with, let's say, less-than-stellar reviews.

Deadline reports, “Now in week 3, the Osgood Perkins pic is also the top grossing R-rated horror of 2024 and the highest grossing indie horror film of the last ten years, topping A24’s Talk To Me, Insidious Chapter 3 from Universal’s Focus, and A24’s Hereditary.”

“Longlegs” has some long legs at the box office. After three weeks of release, the occult-tilted thriller has collected a stellar $58.6 million in North America, enough to become the highest-grossing indie horror film of the last decade.
“Longlegs” surpassed A24’s “Talk to Me” ($48 million domestically) to achieve the milestone. “Talk to Me” has a bigger global tally with $92.1 million, whereas “Longlegs” has earned $62 million globally to date.
The film also ranks as Neon’s highest-grossing film of all time, outperforming the Oscar-winning “Parasite” with $53.36 million in North America. (Neon is a domestic distributor and typically doesn’t control all of the international markets for its films.)
“Longlegs” opened earlier in July and became a sleeper hit, earning $22.6 million in its first weekend and setting a new box office record for Neon in the process. Sydney Sweeney’s religious horror film “Immaculate” previously ranked as the indie company’s biggest start with $5.3 million in March.

Neon’s Longlegs is about to pass $50 million at the worldwide box office, already making it one of the top five highest grossing horror movies of the year. Neon’s cryptic marketing campaign has been working like a charm for the last several months, and it’s showing no signs of slowing down even in the wake of the movie’s release on the big screen a couple weeks ago.
On that note, they’ve uploaded a video this afternoon titled “Fire Fire Fire, Hiss – A Song from Longlegs,” which is creepily described as being “the last known musical recording by Dale Ferdinand Kobble before the voices took over.” That’s the character played by Nicolas Cage in the film, who becomes known by the moniker he signs his work with: “Longlegs.”
The three-minute recording sees Cage singing in character as Dale Ferdinand Kobble/Longlegs, and it’s as unsettling as you’re probably expecting.

If you’re into dark, creepy movies that twist classic stories, check out some of the films from director Osgood Perkins. His latest is a thriller called Longlegs, but one of his coolest movies is a remake of Hansel and Gretel called Gretel & Hansel.
Instead of the normal upbeat fairy tale, Perkins turns this one very grim. The siblings get lost in a scary forest and find an even scarier witch. Played so well by Alice Krige, she lures them in then reveals her truly disturbing nature.
What’s really neat is how Perkins focuses the story on Gretel, played by Sophia Lillis from It. She’s dealing with limited options as a girl in this harsh time period. The witch offers to teach her magic, but it comes with a price. You can really feel Gretel’s struggle between asserting power and protecting her brother.

Spoiler Alert: This story contains spoilers for “Longlegs,” now playing in theaters.
When “Longlegs” sound designer and editor Eugenio Battaglia first spoke with director Osgood Perkins about the audio design for the film, he says Perkins told him he wanted it to feel like “rock ‘n’ roll.”
“Given the ’70s rock ‘n’ roll vibe he wanted and because of the Satanic aspect of the film, I thought it would be pretty neat to do some sort of subliminal message profile to the sound,” Battaglia tells Variety. “[Os] wanted it to feel like something was being projected into our minds because that’s basically what’s happening to the main character.”
Battaglia says he knew exactly what he needed. He immediately grabbed a 360 ambisonic microphone, a type of microphone typically used in Asmr audio and video, and began to rub a towel over and whisper into it to create a weird combination between hypnotic and horrific.

It can be difficult to market a film. A trailer can be the best way to garner interest, although this can be undone when the promotional material offers spoilers to lure in potential viewers (as evidenced with many Terminator sequels.) It is a credit to Neon for operating a “less is more” approach for Longlegs, relying on an unsettling atmosphere conveyed in their cryptic videos as an effective primer for the feature.
Set during the ‘90s, FBI Agent Lee Harker (Maika Monroe) is a new recruit assigned to the unsolved case of an elusive serial killer (Nicolas Cage). Uncovering a series of occult clues, she is intent on stopping him before he claims more lives.

Longlegs, a new horror film starring Maika Monroe and Nicolas Cage, stunned the box office this past weekend with a spectacular $22.6 million debut from 2,510 theaters, making it the best opening for an R-rated film this year. Written and directed by Osgood Perkins, Longlegs has set a high bar for horror films in 2024. Meanwhile, the big-budget romantic comedy Fly Me to the Moon, starring Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum, struggled to attract an audience, earning only $10 million. Nicolas Cage’s performance as a menacing serial killer garnered rave reviews, positioning him once again as a significant draw for...

Spoilers for "Longlegs" follow.
It seems to happen like a clockwork. A new Nicolas Cage movie will arrive, and with it comes a question: "Is Nicolas Cage a good actor?" Cage has been working for decades now, but at some point, some folks got it in their heads that the off-kilter performer was bad at his job. To be fair, this could have something to do with the quality of the films he appears in. Cage once got himself in trouble with the IRS -- he made lavish purchases (including buying a dinosaur skull that turned out to be stolen), and according to CNBC, ended up owing the IRS "$6.3 million in property taxes."
To offset his financial woes, Cage began working -- a lot. He would seemingly take any job thrown his way, and as a result, he appeared in a lot of direct-to-video stinkers. Now, I'm not going to...

Independent distributor Neon just scored another cool horror flick – they’ve acquired worldwide rights to the upcoming documentary/found footage hybrid Shelby Oaks. Even better, it’s the directorial debut of YouTube movie reviewer Chris Stuckmann!
Shelby Oaks follows Camille Sullivan as she searches for her missing sister, played by Sarah Durn. Her sister disappeared while filming her paranormal investigation web series. Brendan Sexton III also stars in what sounds like a creepy mystery.
What’s really wild is how the movie got made. Stuckmann’s production company launched a Kickstarter that raised over $1.3 million – making it the highest funded horror film ever on the site! Exec producers include Mike Flanagan and Adam Goldberg too.
Neon plans a theatrical release in the US and will handle international sales. They negotiated the deal with Stuckmann’s production company Paper Street Pictures.

Around this time last week, movie theater chain Flix Brewhouse wasn’t planning on scheduling the Neon horror film “Longlegs” at its Dallas venue in Fresco.
By Thursday around noon, though, chief revenue officer Chris Randleman noticed a notable uptick in interest at the circuit’s other locations. “We saw, ‘Oh shit, this is really popping off sales-wise,” he recalls. “We have to book this.” They rang Neon, the film’s distributor, and secured a few last-minute showtimes. “By the end of the night, we had 100 tickets sold. It usually doesn’t happen like that.”
Randleman’s hunch proved to be prophetic. “Longlegs,” an occult-tilted thriller, collected a stellar $22.6 million in its opening weekend. Directed by Osgood Perkins, the film follows Maika Monroe (“It Follows”) as F.B.I. Agent Lee Harker, who is tracking the serial killer known as Longlegs. Move over, Vivian Ward! A new sex worker is making the Hollywood scene, and she looks tough as nails. Sean Baker’s first Anora trailer hits the dance floor today, and if you’ve got any children in your vicinity, you should cover their ears. Today’s red-band trailer is full of skin, expletives, and an out-of-control courtship for a young couple, making a Russian oligarch quite angry. Baker’s Anora won the Palme d’Or at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, and today, we get a front-row seat for the comedic drama that’s already got people talking.
In Neon‘s Anora trailer, Mickey Madison (Better Things) heads to Las Vegas to tie the knot with her new husband Ivan (Mark Eidelshtein). What begins as a seemingly innocent courtship with parties, private jets, and shopping sprees as a perk for shacking up with a young man of means...

Driven by rave reviews and one hell of a marketing campaign, Neon’s horror movie Longlegs has already proven to be a massive box office success story in the first few days of release.
Neon released Longlegs into 2,510 theaters here in the United States over the weekend, and the acclaimed horror movie scared up a hugely impressive $22.6 million at the box office!
That gives Longlegs the highest grossing opening weekend for an original horror movie this year, far surpassing the $11.7 million opening of Blumhouse’s Night Swim earlier this year.
It’s also the highest opening for a Neon release in the company’s history, blowing away the headline-worthy $5.3 million opening of their movie Immaculate earlier this year.
To put into perspective how big of a win this is, the $22.6 million opening of Longlegs far exceeds even the highest opening for an A24 horror movie – Hereditary with $13.5 million.

Typically, horror filmmakers are fans of horror films. That’s just the reality of the situation. If you spend so much time thinking about how to scare people, you tend to enjoy films that do the same. However, that’s not the case with “Longlegs” filmmaker Osgood Perkins.

Spoilers for "Longlegs" follow.
"Longlegs" hit movie theaters this week, and it's already an unprecedented hit for indie studio Neon. Apparently, audiences have been craving horror-themed thrillers for adults.
The film is centered around Lee Harker (modern scream queen Maika Monroe), a young FBI agent hunting a serial killer (Nicolas Cage) in 1990s Oregon. "Longlegs" is a clear "Silence of the Lambs" riff but director Osgood Perkins doesn't go for a straightforward procedural. When it comes time to explain the killer, he uses the same themes of supernatural evil as in his previous pictures, this time within the frame of the late 20th century Satanic panic.
Like many of the best serial killer movies, the killer himself (we'll just call him "Longlegs") isn't onscreen much; mysteries don't work if they spoon-feed the audience from the beginning. The film tees up how horrific he must look. The opening, set in the...

A lot of horror movies nowadays try to build up hype with critics claiming that they’re “one the scariest movies ever” or “the scariest movie since The Exorcist.” And while that buzz is similarly surrounding Longlegs, the marketing for the film alone is certainly making an impression that sets it apart from the others. In the review from our own Chris Bumbray, he explains that the film lives up to a lot of the claims, “Once the credits rolled, I found myself surprisingly shaken up by what I’d just seen, and it’s a film I’ll need to chew on in the coming weeks. Expect this one to make major waves among horror fans when it opens on July 12th. Will it be considered a new classic? Time will tell, but for me, this was a pretty dazzling piece of work.”

“Longlegs” opens with a title card with lyrics from “Get It On (Bang a Gong),” a 1971 track from the English rock band T. Rex, written by its frontman Marc Bolan: “Well you’re slim and you’re weak / You’ve got the teeth of the hydra upon you / You’re dirty, sweet, and you’re my girl.”
Neither the song nor those lyrics play a critical role in the audience’s understanding of the story, in which FBI agent Lee Harker (Maika Monroe) is on the hunt for the elusive serial killer Longlegs (Nicolas Cage). While the look of Cage’s Longlegs is partially based on his character’s backstory as a former glam rocker, striking a similar silhouette to Bolan himself, writer/director Osgood Perkins told IndieWire the connections are far more cosmic than something tangible he can put his finger on. Longlegs, the highly regarded horror film starring Nicolas Cage and Maika Monroe, stunned the North American box office over the weekend to open on an estimated $22.6m record bow for Neon.
‘Longlegs’: Review
Osgood Perkins’s film about an FBI agent on the trail of a satanic serial killer may not have won the box office weekend – that accolade went to Universal/Illumination’s Despicable Me 4 with a $44.7m hold – but second place against a summer tentpole is impressive.
Further, the opening weekend result has revived the horror genre and delivered a timely fillip to box office in a difficult year.

“Longlegs,” an occult-tinged horror mystery about an FBI agent on the trail of a serial killer, opened to a phenomenal $22.6 million, easily outgrossing “Fly Me to the Moon,” a $100 million dollar rom-com featuring two of Hollywood’s brightest stars.
To pull off that upset, “Longlegs” got a lift from some sensational reviews, as well as a creepy performance by Nicolas Cage. The film’s opening weekend results are a record-breaking debut for Neon, the indie distributor that did an outstanding job of generating word-of-mouth for “Longlegs” thanks to a viral marketing campaign. Updated, Sunday Am: Illumination/Universal’s Despicable Me 4 won the weekend with $44.6 million, but Neon’s Nicolas Cage-Maika Monroe starrer Longlegs stole the headlines, delivering the best original horror opening year-to-date and the best-ever start for the Tom Quinn-run 7-year old distribution company with $22.6M.
That’s an excellent win for original movies, a much-needed boost for the horror genre, and a big win for the arthouse circuit, which we hear had several sellouts over the weekend with theaters adding showtimes. Overall, per ComScore, it’s the seventh highest-grossing weekend of the year at $129M for all titles.
We told you at the onset of the summer that Longlegs could surprise, with Neon executing a deft marketing campaign with clever clips; overall, a campaign that hid Nicolas Cage. The amazing coup here with Neon is how they racked up a ton of money off a very...

Monroe plays a dogged, antisocial FBI agent on the trail of Cage’s occult serial killer in the latest buzzy, atmospheric film from Osgood Perkins
Her FBI colleagues describe Agent Lee Harker (Maika Monroe) as “highly intuitive”. And if the term sounds like federal agency code for something ominous and slightly sinister, that’s because it is. Harker might lack social graces, but she has uncanny instincts when reading a crime scene. Or she does for some of the time, at least – it’s a gift that is selective and intermittent. But as jovial, gregarious Agent Carter (Blair Underwood) observes: “Half-psychic is better than not psychic at all.” Carter is clearly the glass-half-full type, particularly if the glass is half full of whisky. He has recruited Harker to work on a confounding cold case, hoping that her abilities may help to get the investigation moving again. What he couldn’t...

"Longlegs" won't need long legs to succeed at the box office. The much-hyped horror movie from director Osgood Perkins is a hit in its opening weekend, where it's on track to gross around $22 million. That's more than double the production budget which, according to indie film studio Neon (via World of Reel), was less than $10 million.
According to The Wrap, early tracking for "Longlegs" indicated a debut of $7-9 million, so it has massively outperformed expectations. Meanwhile, Neon has set two new box office opening weekend records in the same year, first with the Sydney Sweeney-starring "Immaculate" ($5.3 million), and now with "Longlegs." The film stars established horror scream queen Maika Monroe as rookie FBI agent Lee Harker, who is assigned to work on a disturbing case involving a serial killer known only as Longlegs (played by Nicolas Cage).

I hate when people claim “nothing has come out this year” when it’s more a matter of access versus lack of great content. 2024 has already seen a slew of fantastic horror films released. And yet, I’m still hearing the same sentiment. “Nothing has been released.” “The year is trash.” We must be looking at completely different years because not only has this year been killer, but we’ve received some films that transcend labels. Chris Bumbray recently revealed his own favorites of the year, so I felt it was time to focus on the horror side. So join me as I look back on the best horror films of the first half of 2024.
Longlegs:
Rarely does a film live up to the hype when said hype is astronomically large. Yet Longlegs managed to come along with absolutely tremendous performances and a terror that emanates every bit of celluloid.
