Marvel Studios’ Deadpool & Wolverine delivered $54.2m in its third weekend as the newly crowned $1bn global smash surged to $494.3m in North America, staying top ahead of a spectacular $50m debut for Sony’s romantic drama It Ends With Us.
It was a great weekend for the Ryan Reynolds-Blake Lively household that maintained an encouraging summer season and for the first time saw two films earn $50m or more in the same weekend in the traditionally slow month of August. Studios will confirm numbers on Monday.

It was husband vs wife this weekend at the top of the box office charts, with Blake Lively’s romantic drama, It Ends With Us, battling it out for the top spot with hubby Ryan Reynolds’s box office behemoth, Deadpool & Wolverine. In the end, the superhero team-up movie managed to hold on to the top spot for a third weekend in a row, grossing an outstanding $54 million, which is only a 44% drop since last week (that’s a great hold), with the film likely to cross the $500 million mark at the domestic box office by mid-week.
However, while it wasn’t able to eke out a win over Deadpool, It Ends With Us, which is adapted from the novel by Colleen Hoover, was still a major win. The Blake Lively vehicle’s $50 million gross makes it one of the highest-grossing romantic dramas in recent memory, with it well on...

Based on the action role-playing first-person video game of the same name, set in a space Western science fantasy setting, Borderlands is the newest addition to the heavily saturated video-game adaptation sub-genre. The movie is directed by Eli Roth, a filmmaker famous for his entries into the horror franchise, particularly those of an incredibly gory nature including Hostel and last year’s Thanksgiving. Starring Cate Blanchett (Tar), Kevin Hart (Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle), Jamie Lee Curtis (Halloween) and Ariana Greenblatt (Barbie), Borderlands follows a ragtag team of misfits who embark on a mission to save a missing girl who holds the key to unimaginable power. Despite boasting a competent cast and colorful visuals, Borderlands is severely let down by poor dialogue, an uninteresting story and complete ignorance of the source material.
The success of a video game adaptation largely relies on one thing – how true it stays to the lore of the game.

Two very different films are giving the August box office a rush of new energy, as Sony/Wayfarer’s “It Ends With Us” has earned a superb $50 million opening weekend while Marvel Studios’ “Deadpool & Wolverine” stays No. 1 with $54 million to become the second R-rated film to gross $1 billion worldwide.
“It Ends With Us,” which carries a $25 million budget before marketing, has become the latest of a long line of mid-budget films targeted at women that is finding box office success.
Based on Colleen Hoover’s best-selling novel and starring Blake Lively and director Justin Baldoni, the film has won over the author’s fans with a 94% Rotten Tomatoes audience score, an A- CinemaScore and a 4 ½ star PostTrak rating.
Just as important, Sony reports that nearly half of the film’s audience are infrequent moviegoers, meaning that theaters are getting revenue from untapped areas of the public while “It Ends With Us...

Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds have succeeded in creating their own Barbenheimer moment at the box office with their two very different films, Deadpool & Wolverine and It Ends With Us.
Marvel Studios and Disney’s Deadpool & Wolverine — in addition to crossing the $1 billion mark at the global box office on Saturday — stayed atop the North American chart with $54.2 million in its third weekend. The blockbuster, which has obliterated one record after another, finished Sunday with an estimated domestic tally of $494.3 million and $535.2 million overseas for a worldwide haul of $1.029 billion.
The movie is a huge win for Marvel, and there’s more to come. The pic is only days away from passing up Warner Bros.’ Joker to become the top-grossing R-rated film of all time at the worldwide box office (a record it already holds domestically).

Sunday Am Update: Here’s how the weekend is settling: Ryan Reynolds is first with Marvel Studios/Disney’s Deadpool & Wolverine‘s third weekend at $54.2M. Blake Lively is second, but with a very strong $50M for It Ends With Us.
This is the first time that two movies in August both played to north of $50M.
The expectation is that the Justin Baldoni directed and starring movie based on the Colleen Hoover novel will have a good Sunday. Sony’s Where the Crawdads Sing only eased -13% off its Saturday. These female lit feature adaptations may fall on Saturday as the fan fevered turnout occurs on Thursday and Friday, but sometimes they they can see a matinee audience recovery on Sunday, which is what is expected here.

Colleen Hoover’s literary sensation “It Ends With Us” is now a box office smash.
A film adaptation of her 2016 novel, starring Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni (who also directed), has collected a stellar $50 million from 3,611 venues in its opening weekend. It’s a huge win for the Sony Pictures movie, which cost $25 million to produce. “It Ends With Us” tells the story of Lily Bloom (Lively), a small business owner who gets caught in a love triangle between a charming but abusive neurosurgeon, Ryle (Baldoni) and her first love, Atlas (Brandon Sklenar). Critics were mixed but audiences have responded enthusiastically to the PG-13 romantic drama, which notched an “A-” on CinemaScore.
“This is a sensational opening for a dramatic romance film,” David A. Gross, who runs the movie consulting firm Franchise Entertainment Research. “Pure romance is not a big performer at the box office, but occasionally the right story...

Gina Gershon nearly put her first onscreen love interest in the hospital.
The actress recently recalled filming her “first love scene ever” with Tom Cruise in their 1988 movie Cocktail, during which he was a total “gentleman,” despite the fact that she “kneed him right in the nose.”
“At one point, he starts off under the covers, and I told him I was very ticklish,” she explained this week on Watch What Happens Live. “I said, ‘No, no, don’t ever do that.’ And in one take — I think he wanted a reaction — and he grabbed my stomach, and I kneed him right in the nose. I was like, ‘Oh, my God, I just broke Tom Cruise’s nose.’ He’s like, ‘No, no, you told me.’ I’m like, ‘I’m so sorry,’ he was like, ‘No, it was my fault.’ And he was so overprotective over me. He was great.

Spoiler alert: This column contains mild spoilers for the “Borderlands” film and game series.
On paper, the wildly popular “Borderlands” game series is the perfect fodder for the big screen: Ragtag bunch of space outlaws? Check. Potty humor to punctuate intense action? Check. A lovable (and a little annoying) robot sidekick? Check!
So how did Lionsgate’s film adaptation, helmed by Eli Roth, fumble the bag so badly?
It’s a dud movie by any standard: “Borderlands” holds a meager 5% fresh rating from critics on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, while Variety‘s chief film critic lambasted the predictable plot, writing, “As the film goes on, it’s increasingly clear where things are headed. By the time ‘Borderlands’ unlocks its vault, not even the characters seem to care what’s inside.”
But of everyone who wastes 102 minutes on this middling “Guardians of the Galaxy” knockoff, there’s one group bound to...

Kevin Hart, Cate Blanchett, and, Jamie Lee Curtis starring in Eli Roth’s Borderlands, well… what could go wrong? Well, many things. Primarily, the low box office earnings.
Kevin Hart in Borderlands| Lionsgate Films
No hate for the movie but it wasn’t exactly what fans of the video game franchise had imagined when the project was first announced. Fans aren’t surprised that the movie failed and they think they have figured out the ‘why’ part.
Borderlands Will Allegedly Have a Low Box Office Opening
It is a pretty big statement that the world is observing, but the evidence is a bit clear on this one. Early screenings have shown negative reception and the world is a bit surprised (and a lot more disappointed) that the film might not succeed.
A still from Borderlands | Lionsgate
The video game franchise is an action RPG with Fps elements and is much loved by the world.

It’s getting ugly. While we predicted that Eli Roth’s Borderlands was shaping up to be a box office flop, according to Deadline’s early numbers, the film is turning out to be nothing short of a catastrophe. Last night, the film only so little that the site forecasts the film is likely to end the weekend with a single digit gross, in the range of $8-10 million. While the reviews have been bad, audiences seem to hate the film even more, with it posting a truly atrocious D+ CinemaScore rating. When all is said and done, this $100 million plus blockbuster may not even earn north of $20 million (total) in North America. It will likely go down as one of the biggest box office disasters ever, unless overseas business is brisk – which seems unlikely.
In another surprise, the Blake Lively-led Colleen Hoover adaptation, It Ends With Us, is doing truly blockbuster business.

This is probably a fun weekend for Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively. The married actors have two films in a tighter-than-expected race for No. 1 at the box office, as Sony/Wayfarer’s complex romance “It Ends With Us” is giving Marvel Studios’ “Deadpool & Wolverine” a run for its money.
Reynolds’ historically successful “Deadpool & Wolverine” currently has the edge in its third weekend with an industry estimated $54.5 million, as it will likely be announced on Sunday that the R-rated Marvel Cinematic Universe entry has joined “Joker” as the second film with that rating to reach $1 billion worldwide, with $494 million coming from North America.
But right behind this weekend is Lively’s “It Ends With Us,” which is drawing in fans of Colleen Hoover’s dramatic novel — mostly women — to the tune of a $49.5 million opening weekend from 3,611 theaters. That includes a $24 million Friday that, even without the $7 million from Thursday previews,...

The August box office is looking Lively with Sony’s drama “It Ends With Us” scoring a spectacular opening day of $24 million from 3,611 locations across Friday and preview screenings. The adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s 2016 bestselling novel is now looking at even higher projections north of $45 million across the three-day frame — a fantastic start for a drama with a mere $25 million production budget, well below the spend of the typical studio summer tentpole.
The popularity of Hoover’s novel on TikTok and marketing’s slant toward female audiences led many analysts to believe that “It Ends With Us” could come in well above earlier tracking. The film now seems primed for a second place opening through the weekend, coming in close to the third outing Marvel’s mega-hit “Deadpool & Wolverine,” starring Blake Lively’s spouse Ryan Reynolds. “It Ends With Us” was the top grosser on its opening day,...

Eli Roth’s long-awaited Borderlands movie has finally hit theaters, but unfortunately, it isn’t off to a great start. The project started production in 2021, and according to stunt coordinator Jimmy O’Dee, they were told that Borderlands would shoot with the assumption that it would be R-rated.
“We were shooting an R-rated movie when we did it. We always knew that we were going to go either 15 or R rating, it’s 15 in UK, for a slightly mature audience,” O’Dee told ScreenRant. “So, we were blowing people’s heads off. And we were cutting feet off. We were doing all of that. But then, you know, a lot happens. We shot that nearly three years ago, or we just finished it. So, I guess a lot happens in post, and they see where it’s going to go and what market they’re aiming for. But literally the idea and the brief was carnage,...

And we were cutting feet off. We were doing all of that. But then, you know, a lot happens. We shot that nearly three years ago, or we just finished it. So, I guess a lot happens in post, and they see where it’s going to go and what market they’re aiming for. But literally the idea and the brief was carnage,...

It’s a bad time to be Eli Roth.
A miscalculation of near-mythic proportions, “Borderlands” has a whopping six percent on Rotten Tomatoes heading into its opening weekend. Those bad reviews (IndieWire gave it a “C-“) are the least of the “Hostel” filmmaker’s problems, as Lionsgate’s misguided video game adaptation has inspired assessments of not only the director’s filmography but also whether his impact on pop culture has been at all valuable.
This ranking can’t account for all of that. If you’re a fan of the types of genre films that Roth makes, read on. If you’re not, do not pass go, do not collect $200, and enjoy the “Borderlands” dogpile — a massive multiplayer online affair now available free of charge.
Last year, Roth’s meaty and murderous “Thanksgiving” did well for the provocateur. The seasonal holiday slasher, starring Nell Verlaque, Patrick Dempsey, and Addison Rae among others,...

Lionsgate and director Eli Roth's Borderlands video game adaptation arrives in theaters today on the heels of some of the worst reviews we've seen for a major studio release in quite some time.
As we know, negative reviews don't always have an impact on audience interest, but in this instance, it's probably safe to say that cinemagoers haven't exactly been convinced to give it a shot!
Despite a starry cast and a family-friendly PG-13 rating, the movie took in just $1.3 million from Thursday night previews, and is now tracking to earn between $10M-$18M at the domestic box office over the course of its opening weekend.
International numbers could wind up giving it a bit of a boost, but taking Borderlands' estimated $100M+ budget into account, and we're almost certainly looking at a massive flop here.
It's not all bad news, though, because Borderlands is no longer showing as 0% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Borderlands is an action sci-fi action comedy adventure film directed by Eli Roth from a screenplay co-written by Eli Roth and Joe Crombie. Based on an action role-playing first-person looter shooter video game franchise of the same name developed by Gearbox Software, the 2024 film follows the story of a group of misfits led by Lilith, an infamous bounty hunter as she returns to her home planet of Pandora. Together they fight against alien monsters and dangerous bandits to uncover one of the most dangerous secrets. Borderlands stars Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, Edgar Ramirez, Ariana Greenblatt, Florian Munteanu, Gina Gershon, Jamie Lee Curtis, Haley Bennett, Bobby Lee, Olivier Richters, Janina Gavankar, Cheyenne Jackson, and Charles Babalola. While, Borderland isn’t getting much love from the critics or the audience, but if you love the action and bonds between the team in Borderlands here are some similar movies you should check out next.

Borderlands Director on Why the Movie has Its Own Canon - Main Image
When it comes to video game adaptations, there is always the question of following the game canon or establishing its own original story.
The Fallout series works in the same canon as the games, but adaptations like Tomb Raider, The Last of Us, and The Super Mario Bros. Movie have to establish their own lore to make sense storywise.
Despite the large world established by the Borderlands game, the film still decided to have its own canon, and director Eli Roth talks about the decision to stay out of the game’s timeline.
Is the Borderlands Movie Canon?
Talking to Dexerto, Roth explained that he had discussions with Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford about what continuity the Borderlands film should follow, and they both agreed that they should be in different canons. Roth explains:

It’s been a big summer for movies, and alongside blockbuster superhero team-ups and schlocky Shyamalan thrillers now comes the next video game adaptation in the form of Borderlands. Co-written and directed by b-movie horror maker Eli Roth (Thanksgiving, Green Inferno), Borderlands is an action-comedy assimilation of the popular first-person shooter series. It’s, uh, something.
Yet despite the critical mauling the adaptation is seeing, there’s a lot more of the Borderlands universe to explore. With seven entries released since 2009, including multiple spin-offs dipping into different genres and styles,...

Jamie Lee Curtis is getting freaky again, and having the time of her life doing it.
During an interview for her new film “Borderlands” alongside co-star Cate Blanchett, the Oscar winner excitedly dished on “Freaky Friday 2,” the follow-up to her hit 2003 body-swap comedy.
The sequel, which Curtis says concludes production in about two weeks, reunites her with a now-grown-up Lindsay Lohan. “Lindsay’s a mommy. Little Luai just had his first birthday a week ago. It changes you as a human, being a parent. She’s very conservative, so I was like, ‘Relax. Relax.’ Luai’s just starting to walk. She’s at that point where toddlers hold onto things, then they wobble, then they go down. She’s at work, and she’s watching on her phone,” Curtis says.

Directed by Eli Roth, Borderlands is an adaptation of the popular video game series developed by Gearbox Software. Essentially an action thriller about a rag-tag gang of space mercenaries, it tries hard to generate Guardians of the Galaxy vibes, but is let down by a lack of chemistry between the cast, largely flat direction and a series of uninspired fight scenes.
The story centres on kick-ass bounty hunter Lilith (Cate Blanchett), who’s hired to find Tiny Tina (Ariana Greenblatt), the missing daughter of business tycoon Atlas, the richest and most powerful man in the universe. To do so, Lilith has to return to her home planet of Pandora, where she quickly finds Tina and discovers that she may be a long-prophesied...

In a galaxy far, far away, a psychotic wasteland dweller is strapped to a pole with explosives. Thirteen-year-old Tiny Tina comes skipping along, singing “Pop Goes the Weasel” before detonating the explosives and causing bits of the psychotic wasteland dweller to litter the landscape. She then introduces our hero to “the fine-ass ladies”—two explosive-stuffed rabbits named Mushy Snugglebites and Felicia Sexopants—who can help them with a major heist.
As juvenile as that description is, I wish I could tell you that Eli Roth’s Borderlands starts by directly copying an iconic scene from the Borderlands 2 game that introduces the ever-chaotic and maniacally performed Tiny Tina in an act of cartoonish violence. At least that would show that, like the games in the series, the film had some semblance of a personality, even if it’s a 4chan anon’s idea of one. And that would at least be...

Borderlands movie Rotten Tomatoes When the live-action Borderlands film was announced, fans had tempered expectations. Despite this, the resulting product has disappointed many. The film currently holds a 59% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, reflecting the overall lukewarm reception. If there is a consensus among critics, it is that the movie struggles to capture the essence of its source material. According to one review:The fans deserve a lot better than whatever director Eli Roth is trying to do with Borderlands. This is the video game movie curse at its worst. Sony/Wayfarer’s “It Ends With Us” is providing exactly the kind of secondary support movie theaters are hoping for, as it has earned $7 million at the Thursday box office largely from fans of Colleen Hoover’s romantic drama novel.
Starring Blake Lively alongside director Justin Baldoni, “It Ends With Us” is as female-driven as expected, with Comscore/Screen Engine’s PostTrak reporting that 82% of the Thursday night audience were women. Hoover’s fans were not disappointed, as the film received a score of 4.5/5 from audiences.
Sporting a $25 million budget co-financed by Sony and Wayfarer, “It Ends With Us” will be an easy theatrical hit as it is set for a $40 million-plus opening weekend, a fine addition to the continued holdover grosses from the Marvel megahit “Deadpool & Wolverine” and Universal’s PG-13 blockbuster alternative “Twisters.”

The early box office numbers are starting to roll in for the weekend. While the Blake Lively adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s It Ends With Us looks like it might become one of the summer’s biggest sleeper hits with its $7 million preview night, the outlook isn’t quite so rosy for the pricey video game adaptation, Borderlands. According to Deadline’s early box office numbers, it only earned about $1.32 million in its Thursday previews. That suggests a weekend in the teens (at best) for Lionsgate’s big-budget video game adaptation, which seems like it’s struggling to find an audience.

An intergalactic bounty hunter on a mission to rescue a preteen explosives specialist faces off with an arms dealer’s army on a hostile desert planet in Eli Roth’s abysmal video game adaptation, Borderlands. With over one billion dollars in sales spread out over half a dozen games and spinoffs, Gearbox’s Borderlands is one of the most successful video game franchises of the 21st century. Known for its unique comic book aesthetics, expansive mythology, memorable characters, and a dark, adult sense of humor; this Australian game seemed more than ready to make the jump to the silver screen. However, instead of a film that embraces the edgy nature of the game that helped create a rabid fanbase (I count myself among the devoted), Borderlands delivers a...

Many video game fans will know that Borderlands is one of the most beloved action games of all time. Currently, there are four main games in the series, as well as some spin-offs and crossovers, but regardless of that, the series is undoubtedly one of the more popular ones.
In light of the recent successes of video game adaptations, a Borderlands movie was demanded by fans, and we now know that the movie is coming out today, but it seems that most fans will be disappointed, wishing that the movie – at least in this format – had never been made.
Namely, ahead of the US premiere of the Borderlands movie, which is happening today – on August 9, 2024 – the first critics’ reviews (for those who’ve seen the previews) are in and the critics have absolutely destroyed the movie, and it seems that the first audience reactions are also very disappointing.

Jamie Lee Curtis revealed on Kevin Hart’s SiriusXM podcast “Gold Minds” (via Entertainment Weekly) that she asks film crews to wear name tags so that everyone remains equal on her film and television sets. The Oscar winner and current Emmy nominee for “The Bear” said that her aim is to dispel the “hierarchy” that inherently exists on sets between actors and the crew since everyone already knows the actors’ names in most cases.
“There’s something really uneven about our position on a set, on a movie, in this arena,” Curtis told Hart. “You guys know our names, we don’t know yours. There’s something inequitable to me about that…On a movie set, if we were all working together, we would all be wearing name tags so that tomorrow when we came in, I would be able to then say ‘good morning [Sabine]’ without even […] thought because I’ve learned her name.

It almost feels right that an Eli Roth movie based on Gearbox Software's Borderlands, a garish video game grind-a-thon that indulges nimrod irreverence and cartoon havoc, would disrupt the good vibes that video game adaptations have been bestowed of late. In recent years the conversation around adequate representation in all aspects of filmmaking, has been gaining a new momentum. Audiences demand for a diverse range of actors onscreen and age is one of the many factors. It is a known fact that actors in Hollywood have a certain time-limit, beyond which they do not receive enough offers.
Recently director Eli Roth restarted the discussion around the industry’s treatment of older actors and stated how they tend to disregard their talent just due to age. He then proceeded to name two senior actors he approached for his movie Borderlands, further cementing that age doesn’t matter to him.

For generations in Hollywood, where films span from dramatic roles to whimsical comedies, actors have often sought fresh and unconventional challenges leading to both critical acclaim and curious experiments. One such leap into the unknown came from Cate Blanchett when she took on the role of Lilith in Eli Roth’s recently released video game adaptation Borderlands.

Celebrated for her diverse and daring roles, when Cate Blanchett appeared in Borderlands, although the movie failed to garner positive reviews, her venture into the realm of video game adaptations, helped her push boundaries. Addison Rae has reignited her pop career with “Diet Pepsi,” her first solo release since last year. It also marks Rae’s first official release on Columbia Records.
The dreamy new song has Rae channeling Born to Die-era Lana Del Rey. It’s a love song full of nostalgic imagery as it explores young love. “When we drive in your car, I’m your baby (So sweet)/Losing all my innocence in the backseat,” she sings on the chorus.

Going in, I had my doubts about Borderlands, the latest overblown video game adaptation created to entice PG-13 moviegoers.
First off, it has a near decade-long history of failed attempts to crack its code, including Craig Mazin, who now shares a co-writing credit using “Joe Crombie”.
If this is the case, after wild small-screen success with Chernobyl and The Last of Us, you could understand why he wouldn’t want to be associated with the final product. Then its original director and credited co-writer and story creator Eli Roth shot the film during the pandemic in 2021. But when two weeks of reshoots were required, he had to turn it over to someone else due to his commitment to completing last year’s hoot of a holiday horror movie Thanksgiving. Thus, Tim Miller (2016’s...

Lionsgate’s Borderlands hits theaters Aug. 9, but the review embargo for the film broke Thursday, and the early reaction from critics has been dire.
A live-action adaptation of Gearbox Software’s popular video game series, Eli Roth’s film takes place on the planet Pandora and tells the story of a band of outlaw misfits. The film stars Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Ariana Greenblatt and Jamie Lee Curtis, with Jack Black providing the voice of a wisecracking robot.
As of Thursday evening, the review aggregator sites have damning scores for Borderlands. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film’s score clocked in at a lowly 6 percent from 45 reviews. Mercifully, the audience score on Rotten Tomatoes is markedly higher at 51 percent so far. On Metacritic, the critic score was 29 based on 23 reviews and things were no better on Letterboxd, where users gave Borderlands a score of 2.1/5.
Below are key excerpts from some of the most prominent early reviews.

Eli Roth’s Thanksgiving was a fun holiday slasher, and the studio didn’t take long to get the ball rolling on a sequel. While speaking with Variety, Roth said that co-writer Jeff Rendell and himself were about to submit the script for Thanksgiving 2 to the studio and teased that Addison Rae could be returning.
“I love Addison Rae,” Roth said. “We kept her alive for a reason. It doesn’t feel like a ‘Thanksgiving’ movie without Addison Rae.” Rae played Gaby in the film, one of Jessica’s (Nell Verlaque) friends who narrowly escaped death at the hands of the mysterious killer. Variety notes that Rae hasn’t officially been signed to the sequel yet.

This article contains major spoilers for "Borderlands."
The "Borderlands" series of video games are a unique breed: they can be thought of as action-oriented shooters, or they can be considered as character-based RPGs. Like so many "open-world" games of the last decade or so, they're structured in such a way that you could either spend your time curating a character and gallivanting across the wasteland of Pandora, or you could jump right into story-based missions and follow a scripted tale like the single-player games of old.
"Borderlands," the feature film adaptation, cannot possibly replicate the open-world aspects of the video game, so it must by default hone in on those story missions. As such, director and co-writer Eli Roth (with Joe Crombie officially co-credited on writing duties) attempts to distill the expansive universe of the "Borderlands" series into a coherent movie, and at least where coherence is concerned, does a pretty decent job.

“Borderlands” almost launched with a dreaded 0% on Rotten Tomatoes until YouTuber Grace Randolph stepped in.
Randolph, a prominent and at-times polarizing online personality known for “Beyond the Trailer,” revealed on X Thursday that her review of Eli Roth’s video game adaptation was the sole reason the film’s rotten score was bumped from a goose egg up to a measly 4%.
“It Was Me!!!!!” Randolph said. “From 0% to 4% on Rotten Tomatoes. Whatever, man, I had a good time. Pretty crazy to set your review to post at 3 a.m. and discover you’re the Only one who liked it?! I never played the game, to be fair.”

Hollywood has a fascinating relationship to video games. Dating back to "Super Mario Bros." in 1993, studios have understood that the popularity of video games was worth trying to exploit for the sake of silver screen entertainment. Unfortunately, that movie was a disaster that paved the way for decades' worth of similar disasters to follow. It's only in the last handful of years that the video game movie curse has truly started to break, with massive hits such as the animated "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" making waves along with things like "Sonic the Hedgehog" and "Detective Pikachu." Still, there are plenty of misses, with Eli Roth's new "Borderlands" movie being met with brutal reviews out of the gate.
With "Borderlands" hitting theaters, it's worth taking a quick look at the state of things. In truth, there just aren't all that many truly great direct movie adaptations of video games,...

According to critics, Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Jack Black and Jamie Lee Curtis couldn’t save Borderlands from being so bad that it’s even bad for a video game movie.
Ever since the genre first took off in the 1990s, movie adaptations of popular game franchises have long been the bane of serious film critics and a boon for giant studios in search of a summer box-office success. Though 1993’s Super Mario Bros., the first live-action video game adaptation in Hollywood history, failed on both a critical and commercial level, films such as Street Fighter (1994) and Mortal Kombat (1995) proved that a cheesy, over-the-top and poorly-acted video game movie could turn a respectable profit while simultaneously pissing off Roger Ebert so bad that he would soon declare war on video games themselves.

If you threw “Guardians of the Galaxy,” “Escape From New York” and “Fallout” into a blender, you would ruin your blender. It doesn’t matter if you tossed in DVDs or celluloid or hard drives, there’s just no way your blender will successfully mix those things together. And if you want proof — and you don’t want to ruin a perfectly good blender — watch Eli Roth’s “Borderlands,” a middling adaptation of the popular video game by GearBox, which can’t make this motley concoction work no matter how much, or possibly how little, it tries.
The original “Borderlands” video game didn’t have to worry too much about being narratively familiar because it had other positive qualities that compensated, like millions of potential weapon combinations and a distinct visual aesthetic. “This plot point is a lot like [insert movie or game here]” isn’t as much of a dealbreaker because the player can...

The first wave of reviews for Borderlands are in (right in time for the movie's theatrical debut later today) and it appears Lionsgate and Eli Roth have an absolute stinker on their hands.
We have a wide range of verdicts from the trades, entertainment outlets, and even gaming websites; thus far, none are positive and those projections of a $15 million opening weekend are likely to now plummet.
The Hollywood Reporter's review is light on praise and states, "It’s conceivable that longtime fans of the video game might get more out of Borderlands, but I wouldn’t count on it. At one point, Claptrap returns to operational mode after a heavy-weaponry assault and says, 'I blacked out. Did something important happen?' Not in this movie."

Eli Roth’s Borderlands is getting so much flak even before the worldwide premiere, and now that the early reviews are out, it sets a disappointing record. Fans already expected the movie’s failure after certain remarks from the director proved it wouldn’t be a faithful adaptation.

The Oscar winner tries to rise above Eli Roth’s juvenile and derivative adaptation of the hit game but gets lost in the mess
Video game fans will probably have a strong opinion on how the new sci-fi movie Borderlands fares as an adaptation of the game franchise. But for a different genre of nerd, Eli Roth’s long-delayed, faux-irreverent space adventure will feel like something out of 90s comic books, crossbred with contemporary superhero movies. Specifically, this incarnation of Borderlands is reminiscent of a third-tier title from a company nipping at the heels of DC or Marvel. It’s as if early-period Dark Horse or Image Comics tried their hand at ripping off Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy or DC’s Suicide Squad, in all their needle-dropping, ragtag boldness.

Cate Blanchett has played queens, prime ministers, psychiatrists, artists, hipsters, thieves, Southern belles, evil stepmothers, Norse deities, Nazis, Katherine Hepburn, Bob Dylan, and an elf. She’s an actor who’s fearless in her choices and boundless in her versatility. So you can imagine her being approached to play a bounty hunter on a junkyard planet far, far away, shooting down scavengers and psychopaths like an interstellar gunfighter, and thinking: Aha! Plot: A bounty hunter named Lilith (Cate Blanchett) is hired to retrieve the daughter (Ariana Greenblatt) of a tycoon who’s hiding out on a dangerous world, Pandora, with an elite former soldier, Roland (Kevin Hart) and a deranged muscleman, Krieg (Florian Munteanu).
Review: Borderlands has been one of the most infamous would-be summer blockbusters in a while. Initially filmed in 2021, when it was shot before Cate Blanchett’s Oscar-nominated role in Tar, the film ended up going in for some significant reshoots with Deadpool director Tim Miller filling in for original helmer Eli Roth, who went off to shoot the well-received Thanksgiving. Given that Roth retains sole directorial credit and has been front-and-center in the movie’s publicity campaign, it’s hard to say definitely what was or wasn’t part of his original concept of the movie. Still, I imagine this seam-laden misfire wasn’t it.
