Sometimes, Hollywood makes twin movies around the same time. M. Night Shyamalan’s Trap has a snappy, exciting premise. It feels a little similar to another upcoming thriller. We may never know if one film was trying to copy the other.
M. Night Shyamalan’s ‘Trap’ shares a lot with an upcoming horror sequel
Trap is about a serial killer named Cooper (Josh Hartnett) who takes his daughter to a concert by pop sensation Lady Raven (Saleka). Instead of being an inspiring tale about how Ted Bundy could have been a good father, Trap is a thriller where Cooper realizes that the entire pop concert is one big trap where law enforcement is trying to snag him. It’s a tight concept for a movie that fizzles out thanks to implausible dialog, a misguided lead performance, and a mid-movie twist that doesn’t work at all.

This weekend’s biggest theatrical release was the novel-based romantic drama “It Ends with Us,” starring Blake Lively, taking on the seemingly unstoppable “Deadpool and Wolverine” juggernaut. Read on for the weekend box office report.
Although Lively’s movie did very well, better than some expected, “Deadpool and Wolverine” stayed on top for a third weekend in a row with $54.2 million, down just 44% to bring its domestic total to $494.3 million. Marvel Studios’ latest is just one or two days away from hitting the $500 million milestone, a benchmark achieved by a mere 21 movies — see the complete list.
The Ryan Reynolds–Hugh Jackman blockbuster grossed another $57.8 million internationally this weekend for an overseas total of $535.2 million, and sure enough, it crossed the $1 billion mark globally, remaining the second-biggest blockbuster of 2024. Another landmark of note is the $78 million the movie has made on global IMAX screens, divided at $41.3 million domestic and $36.7 million international.

M. Night Shyamalan’s filmography has had its ups and downs at the box office and with his audiences, but there is no doubt that the man is dedicated to his art. As the director revealed when speaking with GQ and breaking down his most iconic films, there were times when the director feared he would become a cautionary tale.

While the director talked about his greatest films in the video, he revealed that there was one film that he was afraid of going down on. Despite the film becoming a hit on its first day in theatres, the making of the film made Shyamalan worried for his career, given that a lot of his personal capital was invested in the film’s making, and studios were not ready to buy the film off of the director.

Is the plot of “Trap” too crazy to be true? Apparently not.
The upcoming horror movie follows “father (Josh Hartnett) and teen daughter (Ariel Donoghue) attending a pop concert, where they realize they’re at the center of a dark and sinister event.”
The twist? the girls father Cooper has a secret, he is a serial killer known as the Butcher. The second twist? They aren’t just there to see pop star Lady Raven (Saleka Shyamalan). The concert is actually an elaborate trap that the authorities have put in place to catch him.
So where did filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan come up with such a wild story idea?
Shyamalan revealed that the plot was actually inspired by a real life event — Operation Flagship.
In 1985, over 3,000 fugitives wanted by the authorities for various criminal offensives were sent “invitations” for free Redskins – Bengals’ football tickets in the mail.

It was husband vs wife this weekend at the top of the box office charts, with Blake Lively’s romantic drama, It Ends With Us, battling it out for the top spot with hubby Ryan Reynolds’s box office behemoth, Deadpool & Wolverine. In the end, the superhero team-up movie managed to hold on to the top spot for a third weekend in a row, grossing an outstanding $54 million, which is only a 44% drop since last week (that’s a great hold), with the film likely to cross the $500 million mark at the domestic box office by mid-week.
However, while it wasn’t able to eke out a win over Deadpool, It Ends With Us, which is adapted from the novel by Colleen Hoover, was still a major win. The Blake Lively vehicle’s $50 million gross makes it one of the highest-grossing romantic dramas in recent memory, with it well on...

Two very different films are giving the August box office a rush of new energy, as Sony/Wayfarer’s “It Ends With Us” has earned a superb $50 million opening weekend while Marvel Studios’ “Deadpool & Wolverine” stays No. 1 with $54 million to become the second R-rated film to gross $1 billion worldwide.
“It Ends With Us,” which carries a $25 million budget before marketing, has become the latest of a long line of mid-budget films targeted at women that is finding box office success.
Based on Colleen Hoover’s best-selling novel and starring Blake Lively and director Justin Baldoni, the film has won over the author’s fans with a 94% Rotten Tomatoes audience score, an A- CinemaScore and a 4 ½ star PostTrak rating.
Just as important, Sony reports that nearly half of the film’s audience are infrequent moviegoers, meaning that theaters are getting revenue from untapped areas of the public while “It Ends With Us...

M. Night Shyamalan is known for being a genius with a camera. His storytelling is famously thorough and immersive, gripping the attention of his audience and making the world around him disappear. Nothing showcases this better than the Unbreakable series. Starting in 2000 with Unbreakable, he created an immersive world that had a rocky start.
A still from Split I Universal Pictures
What many might not know, however, is that when the second film in the series, Split, was being made, Shyamalan did not tell anyone that it was going to be a sequel. The way that he managed to get the rights for his character and reveal the information to the studio was quite interesting, to say the least.

M. Night Shyamalan’s Trap is a movie with a simple premise that should have been easy to pull off. Apparently, it was too much for the Sixth Sense director to go a lousy 105 minutes without insulting the audience. While his directing is strained, one of the performances in Trap really sinks the film.
M. Night Shyamalan’s ‘Trap’ doesn’t understand the appeal of movie killers
People love fictional serial killers, especially when they have a perverse charm. Whether it’s Hannibal Lecter, Patrick Bateman, or Count Dracula, the best movie killers make you believe they could draw people in before they sink their teeth in. After all, real killers like Ted Bundy and Jeffrey Dahmer were able to do the same. Making a movie where the main character is a serial killer with no magnetism would be a terrible idea.

M. Night Shyamalan is no stranger to high-concept thrillers. His latest film, Trap, takes a Silence of the Lambs-inspired approach at an unlikely location: a packed concert by pop star Lady Raven (played by the director’s daughter, Saleka). Cooper (Josh Hartnett) is a seemingly normal suburban dad who takes his daughter to see her favorite artist. While striking up a conversation with a venue vendor, he finds out that the show is actually a trap: the FBI has a plan to catch a serial killer called “The Butcher” after learning he would be in attendance. But, as revealed in the trailer, Cooper is The Butcher and has to find a way to escape.
While the plot may sound outlandish, it’s partially based on a true story. Shyamalan shared that Trap took inspiration from the real-life Operation Flagship. “I heard about it when I was a kid and I thought it was totally absurdist,...

Josh Hartnett is back with another interesting project, Trap, after gaining prominence with his role in Oppenheimer. However, he has long connections with the Hollywood industry as he shared the spotlight with the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt back in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

If one were to just say the word "twist" with no context whatsoever, there's a better than decent chance that one would instantly think of M. Night Shyamalan. The filmmaker has become synonymous with the twists in his films, so much so that it might be warranted to include a picture of him next to the word in any dictionary. That all started with 1999's "The Sixth Sense," which remains not only the biggest film of his illustrious career, but also one of the biggest word-of-mouth hits in history.

M. Night Shyamalan said he couldn’t see anyone else but Josh Hartnett as lead character Cooper in his new thriller, “Trap,” noting that he loved that the “Penny Dreadful” star was willing to “risk everything” with him to make the movie.
The “Sixth Sense” director began self-financing his own films with 2015’s “The Visit,” a gamble that paid off on the very first day of release.
“There’s no way to protect yourself. We’ll all get paid if we’re successful, if we’re not, we don’t get paid. And I don’t think you should,” he told GQ in a video where he talked about his most iconic movies.
He said he wrote the role of Cooper as a “superstar,” but needed an actor who was alright with making a movie that didn’t have a studio’s backing upfront.

Somewhere deep inside Trap there’s a good movie bound, gagged and struggling to get out. It might be a grim comedy with something satirical to say about fandoms, drawing the line between the icky fascination with serial killers and shrieky pop idolatry. It could be something straighter and darker; a taut single-location claustro-thriller. Or it might even be closer to a heyday M. Night Shyamalan joint, which takes pride in a good ol’ fashioned rug-pull. But whatever it might be, that good movie never breaks free. Instead, we have an oddly inert wannabe nail-biter that diffuses much of the tension it might have mustered from its neat if improbable premise through a hokily mounted mix of cringe and perplexity.
Much of that cringe arises from Shyamalan’s nepo-tastic decision to cast his daughter Saleka as a Taylor Swift-level popstrel who behaves, and is treated by all, as a...

M. Night Shyamalan’s daughter Ishana Night Shyamalan made her feature directorial debut with a thriller called The Watchers, which received a June 7th theatrical release, courtesy of Warner Bros. / New Line Cinema. (You can read our review Here and watch our interviews with the director and cast members Here.) The movie did not enjoy the sort of box office success many of the elder Shyamalan’s films have, drawing in just under $33 million worldwide. A sequel isn’t likely… but if you’re interested in returning to the world of The Watchers, the story does continue on the page. The Shyamalan film was based on a novel by A.M. Master of suspense M. Night Shyamalan returns with Trap, a psychological thriller blending his signature tension with a complex, twisting plot. The film follows Cooper Adams (Josh Hartnett), a seemingly ordinary father, who takes his teenage daughter, Riley (Ariel Donoghue), to a pop concert as a reward for her academic achievements.
What begins as a fun and innocent night out quickly descends into chaos when Cooper’s dark secret is exposed— he’s actually the infamous serial killer known as “the Butcher.” This revelation sets the stage for a nerve-wracking game of cat and mouse that unfolds in the most extraordinary ways.
Shyamalan expertly crafts a claustrophobic atmosphere that mirrors Cooper’s psychological unravelling. Cooper must navigate a sea of FBI agents, led by the determined Dr. Josephine Grant (Hollywood legend Hayley Mills), and unsuspecting concertgoers, all while maintaining his façade as a loving, caring father.

M Night Shyamalan’s new movie is frequently silly, occasionally thrilling, and makes a modicum of sense. It’s also ridiculously good fun. Here’s our Trap review.
Josh Hartnett’s Cooper is very good at being a dad. He’s taking his daughter, Riley, to a pop concert, for a start, which is nice of him. He tries to get his offspring to teach him internet slang. He shakes his head disapprovingly when the kids around them whip out their smartphones. He clearly loves Riley very much. It’s all very sweet.
Josh Hartnett is also a very tall man. His sheer size turns him into an odd duck like a reverse Jodie Foster in Silence Of The Lambs. When he goes to the bathroom, his head sticks out over the stall. His sense of not-belonging only gets more intense when he uses his phone to check on the...

"Why are you here?" "Revenge." What a line. XYZ Films has revealed an official trailer for an action movie called Hounds of War, a new movie from the action director Isaac Florentine. This one will be released on VOD directly starting in September. Hounds of War about the best military mercenaries money can buy. Known as "The Hounds", they are sent on a final mission by their creator: a carefully planned trap set up to destroy them. So another "trap" movie to play against M. Night Shyamalan's Trap? Sure why not. Hounds of War stars Rhona Mitra, Robert Patrick, and Frank Grillo, with Steven Elder, Yvonne Mai, Joey Ansah, Lee Charles, and Mark Strange. Looks like it was filmed mostly on Malta, which is an infamous tax haven and a nice place to save money making a movie, even though it's not the most exciting place to shoot something this generic & derivative.

Heads up, folks: One of the best trailers of 2024 has just dropped.
Jeremy Saulnier, the writer/director behind films like "Green Room" and "Blue Ruin," has returned with "Rebel Ridge," a movie about a guy who is trying to bail his cousin out of jail, but whose life savings is unjustly taken from him by small-town police officers who seem to operate with impunity. After calmly explaining his case and trying to get his money back, the man takes things into his own hands -- and that's when the cops realize they've made a huge mistake: The dude they're harassing used to be a Marine, and he has no intention of meekly putting his tail between his legs and slinking away from this situation. Quite the opposite, actually: The guy becomes a one-man wrecking crew hellbent on justice, and he's going to make them regret ever messing with him in the first place.

There are certain cultural touchstones of Philadelphia just like there are cultural touchstones to an M. Night Shyamalan movie. The city has its skyline, its accent, the Rocky steps. The filmmaker has his outrageous premises and horror twists. Wide Awake, Shyamalan’s second, pre-Sixth Sense movie, has almost none of...

M. Night Shyamalan is back with another thriller, Trap, starring Josh Hartnett. The film isn’t being screened for the press ahead of its release this Friday, which has led to some speculation. Could the studio be nervous about inevitable negative reviews, or are they trying to keep the plot’s secrets under wraps? After all, it’s a Shyamalan movie and surprises are guaranteed. Since his groundbreaking success with The Sixth Sense, Shyamalan’s films are often remembered for their unexpected twists. However, as iconic as his twist endings have become, his movies offer much more. They delve into deep emotional and psychological...

In 2005, an episode of Adult Swim animated series “Robot Chicken” featured a segment parodying the films of M. Night Shyamalan, who had then just released critical failure “The Village” the previous year. Titled “The Twist,” the sketch depicts Shyamalan as a screeching jokester with a heavy Indian accent who reacts to everything that happens to him and his family by turning to the camera and exclaiming “What a twist!”
For many people, that sketch sums up Shyamalan’s public persona: He’s a man who loves his twist endings. Born in India and raised in Philadelphia, Shyamalan directed a handful of films before 1999’s “The Sixth Sense,” but it was that cultural phenomenon — and the now legendary twist ending that closes it — that introduced him into the popular consciousness. A macabre drama starring Bruce Willis as a child psychologist working with a young boy (played by Haley Joel Osment) who can communicate with the dead,...

The life story behind writer/director M. Night Shyamalan is unlike that of any other major filmmaker working today. Born in India but brought to the United States when he was only six weeks old, Shyamalan wanted to become a filmmaker ever since he got his first Super 8 camera as a child. He had released two little-seen features when in 1999, he made “The Sixth Sense,” a psychological thriller that was successful beyond his wildest dreams, earning over $672 million and bringing him critical acclaim, including nominations from BAFTA, the Golden Globes, Writers Guild, Directors Guild, as well as two Academy Award nominations.
Shyamalan’s box office roll continued with his next two films, 2000’s “Unbreakable” and “Signs” in 2002. But with 2004’s “The Village,” critics began to turn on the filmmaker, citing their disappointment with his plot twist in that movie, a discontent that continued through 2006’s “Lady in the Water” and 2008’s “The Happening.

Disney’s “Deadpool & Wolverine” continued its reign at the top of the U.K. and Ireland box office, slicing through the competition in its second week of release.
The superhero film raked in £8 million ($10.1 million) over the weekend, bringing its total haul to £33.4 million ($42.4 million), according to numbers from Comscore. That makes it the third highest grossing film of 2024 in the territory so far after “Inside Out 2” and “Dune: Part Two.”
In second place, Universal’s “Despicable Me 4” held its ground, adding £2.5 million to reach a four-week total of £30.8 million. Warner Bros.’ “Twisters” maintained its position in the top three, generating £1.1 million in its third week for a cumulative total of £10.1 million.
Disney scored another win with “Inside Out 2,” which showed remarkable staying power in its eighth week. The film secured the fourth spot with £939,144, bringing its total to £52.2 million.

When one thinks of the great sounds in M. Night Shyamalan’s breakout movie, The Sixth Sense, iconic lines probably leap to mind. And none stand out more than the confession scene, in which young Cole Sear (Haley Joel Osment) agrees to tell child psychologist Malcolm Crowe (Bruce Willis) his secret.
“I see dead people,” Cole explains, laying out the rules of the afterlife for the audience and for Malcolm, who doesn’t realize that the boy’s describing him.
It’s a powerful moment, one that deserves to stand the test of time. But it relies upon more than just the dialogue. The scene also works because of the score by James Newton Howard, and more specifically his unique sound design done with editor Michael Kirchberger. Howard works human voices and breaths into the score to represent the spirits’ presence around Cole, making the movie scarier and more profound.

This M. Night Shyamalan article contains spoilers.
You are currently in the middle of the Shyamalanaissance, which is not some kind of B-movie supernatural occurrence, but the return of M. Night Shyamalan to the forefront of filmmaking. After a few big budget flops, this cult-favorite director went back to his low-budget roots for the 2015 found-footage film The Visit, an excellent thriller with a twist that will undoubtedly remind movie viewers of his earlier thriller masterpieces, such as The Sixth Sense and Signs. Since then, Shyamalan has released the surprising slasher film Split and the Unbreakable superhero sequel, Glass, twisty horrors based on books Knock at the Cabin and Old, as well as serial killer thriller Trap.
Not many directors boast as many memorable screen moments as Shyamalan and fewer still continue to put out such consistently enjoyable work after so many years of captivating audiences. Some might say that The Sixth Sense was peak Shyamalan,...

Love ’em or hate ’em, there’s no denying that M. Night Shyamalan movies are an experience like no other. His latest film, Trap, stars Josh Hartnett and has already created a buzz with its unique premise. The movie is set in a concert venue, which is revealed to be a sting operation meant to catch a serial killer. Surprisingly, the twist—that Hartnett’s character, Cooper, is the murderer—was given away in the marketing. A Long History of Twists It’s never been fair to reduce this Hollywood hitmaker’s body of work to a mere collection of plot twists. Going back to The...

It was another downright ridiculous weekend for "Deadpool & Wolverine" at the box office. M. Night Shyamalan's latest thriller "Trap" entered the marketplace with an opening weekend just shy of $16 million, but that wasn't nearly enough to challenge Marvel's latest for the top spot. So, director Shawn Levy's R-rated romp through the multiverse easily held onto the crown, taking in an additional $97 million domestically in its second weekend. More importantly, it now stands alone as the highest-grossing "X-Men" movie ever. Frankly, it's not even close and that gap is only going to widen in the coming weeks.
"Deadpool & Wolverine" has earned $395.5 million domestically through two weekends to go with $428.5 million internationally. That figure includes another stellar $110.5 million from overseas markets this past weekend. The film's running global total stands at $824 million, meaning it has passed 2018's "Deadpool 2" ($786.3 million) to become the biggest "X-Men" movie ever at the box office.

By now, you’ve likely heard that Trap, the latest movie from M. Night Shyamalan that opened this weekend, revolves around two central plot points: A super-dorky dad played by Josh Hartnett has taken his teen daughter to see her favorite singer at a concert that doubles as a trap (see title) for a serial killer terrorizing Philadelphia; and this father-of-the-year contender is, in fact, the killer. Both of these elements are revealed in the trailer that dropped this past April, so we’re not exactly spoiling anything major… yet.

M. Night Shyamalan has teased his next film will be a “cool kind of flip on a genre”.The 53-year-old director recently released his thriller ‘Trap’ - which sees a serial killer called Cooper A.K.A. The Butcher (Josh Hartnett) come to realise the pop concert he took his daughter (Ariel Donoghue) to was an FBI plot to catch him - and has revealed he is already working on a new project that will have a unique take on a popular film genre. He told Collider: “I'm still learning about it. It has a really cool kind of flip on a genre, so I'm very excited about that. I haven't done this particular subject matter, and I've always been interested in it. But it's an odd way to come into it again. “I'm really interested now, like with ‘Trap’ , kind of going at subject matters, like serial killers,...

Sixteen years after its divisive debut, M. Night Shyamalan’s psychological thriller The Village is set to receive a highly anticipated 4K remaster. In an interview with SlashFilm, the elusive director confirmed that the upgraded release is currently in the works.
The Village explored complex themes of isolation, deception, and humanity’s relationship with fear and the unknown. Though its exploration of these weighty concepts drew mixed reviews upon release, the film has since attracted a devoted cult following appreciative of its nuanced storytelling.
Starring Hollywood heavyweights like Joaquin Phoenix, Adrien Brody and Sigourney Weaver, The Village centered around a 19th century Pennsylvania community living in fear of mysterious creatures inhabiting the dark forest surrounding their village. However, as newcomer Ivy, played brilliantly by Bryce Dallas Howard in her breakout role, would discover, nothing is quite as it seems within the village’s carefully constructed facade.

Major spoilers ahead for "The Village."
Often cited as one of the first real indications that writer/director M. Night Shyamalan was losing his touch, the 2004 film "The Village" was famous for its divisive twist. After spending the entire movie in a secluded 1800s community, it's revealed that the film actually takes place in the present day, and the village's youths are unwitting prisoners of a living history museum. Blind villager Ivy (Bryce Dallas Howard) briefly escapes the town and gets help from a 21st century park ranger employed to guard the perimeter, but she doesn't figure out the truth and returns home none the wiser. The village's founders are able to keep the lie going long after the credits roll.
It's bleak and unsatisfying, sure, but as the years go by a lot of viewers have come around to it. /Film's chief film critic Chris Evangelista defended the movie in 2017, calling it "a beautiful,...

Karma’s a bitch… and she loves a genre flick.
M. Night Shyamalan just put the spotlight back on viral terror with “Trap,” an escape room horror about a killer attempting to outmaneuver the cops at a concert packed with iPhones. In fewer theaters this weekend (but streaming too!) is director Marcus Dunstan’s “#Amfad: All My Friends Are Dead.” That’s another internet horror movie featuring a major pop music event — only here the murderer and their victims never make it inside the venue.
Starring ex-Nickelodeon favorite Jade Pettyjohn and none other than JoJo Siwa herself, “#Amfad” sees its masked villain ensnare a van full of wannabe internet celebs in a “Seven”-esque killing spree at a remote Airbnb. Both former kid-stars-turned-social-media-heavyweights, Pettyjohn and Siwa worked together years ago when the “Dance Moms” legend guest-starred with series regular Pettyjohn on “School of Rock.”

Marvel’s “Deadpool & Wolverine” (Disney) grossed $97 million on its second weekend, representing a 54 percent drop. That’s in line with other blockbuster openings and an impressive achievement. Disney now has all four of the top weekend totals this year, including the first two weekends of “Inside Out 2.” (The Pixar smash fell only 34 percent its second weekend).
That gets the third “Deadpool” (and the eighth Hugh Jackman “Wolverine”) movie to $395 million domestic and $824 million worldwide by its second weekend, the best of 2024. Whether it bests “Inside Out 2” (currently $627 million) for #1 for the year remains uncertain. “Inside Out 2” is closing in on “Barbie,” which ended up at $636 million last year, but that’s a trivia point; much more important is what these films brought to the struggling 2024 box office.
