The world premiere for Kevin Costner’s “Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter Two” is back on the horizon. It’s just a little further out there than it initially had been.
The second “Horizon” film will make its world premiere out of competition at the tail-end of the 81st Venice International Film Festival of La Biennale di Venezia. It will screen on the final day of the festival, Saturday, September 7, 2024.
“Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter One” will screen there on the same day; it premiered at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival.
Debuting his second installment at Venice has been the “dream,” Costner said in a statement.
“My dream was always to show ‘Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter Two’ at the Venice Film Festival. The fact that now they have decided to show Chapter One earlier in the day and then the World Premiere of Chapter Two that evening shows not only...

Part two of Kevin Coster‘s Horizon: An American Saga will premiere at the 2024 Venice Film Festival.
Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter Two, directed by and starring the Oscar-winning actor, boasts a star-studded supporting cast of Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Jena Malone and Danny Huston. It is set to get its world premiere in the out-of-competition section in Venice on Sept. 7.
Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter One will also be screened on the same day after the film received a 10-minute standing ovation in Cannes in May – though critics soon piled on Costner’s Western epic. Horizon was the first film in writer-director-star Costner’s four-picture gamble that he famously leveraged one of his homes to help finance (spending $38 million out of pocket). Chapter One is three hours and is largely focused on setting the stage — introducing a sprawling ensemble of characters.

Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter Two will have its world premiere out of Competition at Venice Film Festival.
The film will play on Saturday, September 7. Chapter One will also play on the same day in Venice, having had its world premiere out of Competition in Cannes in May.
Chatper Two had been set for a cinema release in the US on August 16; New Line Cinema then pulled that release earlier this month, stating it wanted to give audiences ”a greater opportunity to discover the first installment of Horizon over the coming weeks, including on PVoD and Max.

Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2 will premiere at the 81st Venice Film Festival.
The second installment of the Civil War saga starring Costner alongside Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Jena Malone and Danny Huston, will screen out-of-competition on Saturday, September 7.
In an unprecedented move, Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1, which world premiered in rival festival Cannes in May, will be screened earlier in the day.
Venice’s decision to celebrate Chapter 2 comes just weeks after plans to launch the second installment theatrically August 16 in the U.S. were delayed after a sluggish box office performance for Chapter 1 following its July 4 release.

Kevin Costner’s “Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter Two” is set to world premiere at the Venice Film Festival in September after its U.S. release was pulled.
The Western epic’s second chapter was scrapped earlier this month from its planned Aug. 16 release in U.S. theaters after “Horizon’s” first installment, which carried a $100 million budget, earned only $11 million on its opening weekend.
“Chapter Two” — which Costner again directs and stars in alongside Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Jena Malone and Danny Huston — will bow on the Lido out-of-competition on Sept. 7. The world premiere will be preceded earlier the same day by a screening of the first “Horizon” movie, which launched from Cannes in May to a seven-minute standing ovation.

Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga Chapter 1 will be available to own from next Monday. More details below.
After a muted response from critics and audiences alike, Warner Bros. is making Horizon: An American Saga Chapter 1 available to buy digitally on 29th July in the UK. Chapter 1 was made available digitally a few weeks earlier in the US.
Horizon: An American Saga Chapter 1 premiered in cinemas in late June, but failed to bring in the people. Chapter 2 of Kevin Costner’s Western epic Horizon: An American Saga won’t be released in August after all.
Nobody can accuse Kevin Costner of being lazy. He has financed, produced, co-written, directed and co–starred in Horizon: An American Saga, which was conceived as a four film series, each one pushing the three hour mark.
Chapter 1 was released in the UK last month, and the plan was to release Chapter 2 in August.
However, according to The Hollywood Reporter, the second film has been pulled from the release schedule. The reason given is the lacklustre box office reciepts for the first film, which took $20 million against a budget of $100 million.
It seems the plan is to encourage people to discover Horizon at home, so anticipation can build for the second film.

The Dances With Wolves star revealed that production has begun for the third film and that he has plans to make a fourth. It didn’t take long for costume designer Lisa Lovaas to dive into her exhaustive prep for Kevin Costner’s “Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1,” the director’s ambitious Western chronicling the Civil War-era expansion and settlement of the American West. In fact, she started taking notes immediately after reading the first page of Costner’s massive script (co-written by Jon Baird), which was not her usual routine. But it was so densely packed with descriptions of the characters (140 speaking parts), as well as the locations, that Lovaas needed to jot it all down to get a head start on her research, which turned into a book-length account of everything (including actual photographs from 1861 to 1865).
Lovaas researched with surgical precision because she had three movies to plan. The first movie introduces three storylines: an attack on the Horizon tent town of San Pedro (eventually Arizona) by the Apache across...

Plot: An epic saga of the various groups who try to settle the ever-expanding horizon of the old West.
Review: Kevin Costner’s Horizon might be the most ambitious movie undertaking since Lord of the Rings. Think about it – Kevin Costner has sunk a huge chunk of his own personal fortune into making an epic Western saga, with a second movie only weeks away from hitting theatres, regardless of whether or not the first makes him any money. If that weren’t enough, he’s already started shooting pieces of the third film, and he’s sworn he’ll be making a fourth film as well. Given the scope of his ambitions, it’s hard to truly judge Horizon – Chapter 1 as a standalone film, with it so clearly part of a much bigger whole.

“I make movies for men,” Kevin Costner said on the Happy Sad Confused podcast alongside members of the Horizon: An America Saga cast. “That’s what I do. But I won’t make a movie unless I have strong women characters. That’s how I’ve conducted my career. I think that’s why I have a good following. I thank you women for dragging your men here. It was a Western after all. I just can’t conceive of a movie without having [strong women].“
Horizon: An American Saga boasts quite the ensemble cast, including strong female characters played by Sienna Miller, Isabelle Fuhrman, Jena Malone, Abbey Lee, and others. Costner added that he “couldn’t conceive of a scene that didn’t involve a woman” while he was co-writing the script alongside Jon Baird. Kevin Costner is not a filmmaker who thinks small. His debut feature as director, “Dances with Wolves,” was a sweeping epic of the American frontier that overcame industry skepticism in 1990 to prove that the Western genre still had relevance for contemporary audiences — winning Costner a Best Director Oscar in the process. His next directorial effort, 1997’s “The Postman,” was an even bigger swing for the fences, a post-apocalyptic fable that applied Costner’s interest in Western iconography to science fiction, creating a one-of-a-kind adventure film as bold and idiosyncratic as anything released by a Hollywood studio that year. Even a more modest production like “Open Range,” Costner’s 2003 Western about free range cowboys battling an evil rancher, sought to illuminate aspects of the old West elided by other movies, going deep into the intricate details of its characters’ work and personal lives and reconsidering the role of women in the...

Kevin Costner recently joined his “Horizon: An American Saga” cast for a live recording of the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, and he said his planned four-movie saga differs from many Western films that have come before in that its female characters “drive the story in every plot line.” Costner, who co-wrote the franchise with Jon Baird, said he “couldn’t conceive of a scene that didn’t involve a woman” while shaping the story.
“Horizon” chronicles the journey of several characters during and after the Civil War as they settle the American West. Kevin Costner stars in the film opposite a sprawling ensemble cast, which includes Sienna Miller, Jena Malone, Isabelle Fuhrman, Abbey Lee and Ella Hunt. He told the “Happy Sad Confused” audience that he is aware his directorial efforts skew more towards men in their appeal, but he said strong women is what he’s most interested in.

Editor’s note: This review was originally published May 19, when the movie world premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. It hits theaters beginning today in previews before going wide Friday.
There can be no doubt if there is one person bound and determined to keep Hollywood’s long history of Westerns alive, it has been Kevin Costner. Ok, well Clint Eastwood too.
And that has been true right from the beginning of Costner’s career, when he played the freewheeling scene stealer Jake in Lawrence Kasdan’s Silverado in 1985. He also made an impression as the title star of 1994’s Wyatt Earp. But his real mark on the genre has been not just as an actor but also as director and producer behind the scenes, first with his Best Picture Oscar-winning 1990 pic Dances with Wolves and 2003’s terrific Open Range with co-star Robert Duvall. In the more than 20 years that have passed since Kevin Costner last stood behind the camera and delivered his third feature as a director, 2003's well-received "Open Range," a lot has changed within the studio system. For one thing, there are fewer independent studios in operation these days compared to the turn of the century, when the very idea of Disney absorbing 20th Century Fox in a hostile takeover or Paramount Pictures desperately seeking a merger would've felt laughable. For another, the advent of streaming has completely upended the status quo, transforming bravura spectacles crafted specifically for theaters — even one directed by the legendary Francis Ford Coppola — into an exception rather than the rule. And, of course, ever-volatile moviegoer habits combined with a once-in-a-generation pandemic have further convinced industry bigwigs to embrace risk-averse strategies, spurning auteur-driven passion projects in favor of the safer shores of superheroes and other franchises.

Kevin Costner co-writes, directs and stars in Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1. Here’s our review of the new western.
You’ll probably find a more reliable review of Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 out there if we’re being blunt here. This is my Marvel. Kevin Costner’s never been involved in a western I’ve not liked, and many of them I outright love. His return to the saddle – not least to the director’s chair too, for the first time since the superb Open Range (2003) – has famously come about because he had to pay for it himself. And when you’re paying the bill, you can do things you want you want to.
Which is what Kevin Costner has done, signing off every last shot, with not a Hollywood executive sitting on his shoulder.

It would be unreasonable to expect Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1, as the first of a planned four-film series about the expansion of the American West, to tie all of its narrative threads together. But Kevin Costner’s grand opus gets off to an inauspicious start, with its various storylines often muddled by the consistently haphazard editing, to the point that it becomes difficult to tell how many of the countless characters are related to one another.
If the audience is meant to be privy to where things are heading, there should at least be some clearly defined motivations or character development, perhaps even something resembling narrative momentum. But Horizon Chapter 1 is all table-setting, with the stories lacking in polish and dramatic momentum and the characters never developed beyond archetypes. There’s even little sense of either geographic or temporal scope to make this entry feel like part...

Well, isn’t it fascinating how sometimes art imitates life, and at times, it seems to imitate other art? It’s no secret that Hollywood is a place where ideas are constantly recycled, reimagined, and repackaged. As we eagerly await the release of Horizon: An American Saga, Kevin Costner accusing Taylor Sheridan of ‘borrowing’ a Yellowstone storyline hits a familiar note in the cinematic symphony.

This accusation even may have raised a few eyebrows. After all, Sheridan himself has been open about drawing inspiration from various sources for his works. After seeing how Sheridan’s 1883 echoes the rugged essence of the untamed American landscape—much like Costner’s narrative—it is difficult not to nod in agreement when Costner said at Cannes that aspects of his American frontier story may have inspired the Yellowstone creator.

After ruling the film industry, Kevin Costner recently took television by storm thanks to Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone. Now, he is all set to return to the big screens and this time, it will be with his very own saga. Horizon: An American Saga is not just two or three films; it is a four-part American epic Western. Not only do the films star Kevin Costner in the lead role, but he has also directed, produced, and co-written them. Talk about an all-in-one deal!

If you ask Kevin Costner about the similarities existing between ‘Horizon’ and the ‘Yellowstone’ spinoff ‘1883,’ he’ll tell you it’s possible Taylor Sheridan may have “borrowed” ideas from the upcoming movie ‘Horizon’ when penning the script for ‘1883.’ The problem is that Costner doesn’t believe the scriptwriter will ever admit to doing it.
See What Kevin Costner Has To Say About the “Duplications” Between ‘Horizon’ And ‘Yellowstone’
Before the great Kevin Costner and Taylor Sheridan fallout, the duo were once on very good terms.
Even though neither Costner nor Jon Baird – Costner’s ‘Horizon’ co-writer – were credited as writers on the epic Western drama ‘1883,’ Costner still believes Sheridan could have been inspired by ideas from ‘Horizon.’
I know what you’re thinking; if ‘1883’ premiered in 2021, a good three years before ‘Horizon: An American Saga,’ which is still to premiere on June 28, how can the former have influenced the latter?...

Academy Award-winning visionary filmmaker Kevin Costner directs New Line Cinema’s vast Horizon: An American Saga Chapters One and Two, a multi-faceted chronicle covering the Civil War expansion and settlement of the American West. A story of America too big for one film, this true cinematic event also stars Costner, who co-writes with Jon Baird (The Explorers Guild) and produces through his Territory Pictures.
In the great tradition of Warner Bros. Pictures’ iconic Westerns, Horizon: An American Saga explores the lure of the Old West and how it was won—and lost—through the blood, sweat and tears of many. Spanning the four years of the Civil War, from 1861 to 1865, Costner’s ambitious cinematic adventure will take audiences on an emotional journey across a country at war with itself, experienced through the lens of families, friends and foes all attempting to discover what it truly means to be the United States of America.

Taylor Sheridan has become one of the most sought-after writers in the industry after he created shows such as Yellowstone and Tulsa King. The former actor who shot to fame as a writer for Sicario has been feuding with his star Kevin Costner for the past few months as the actor worked on his magnum opus Horizon: An American Saga.
While Yellowstone gears up for its final season Costner’s Horizon seems to have hit it big at the Cannes Film Festival after its premiere received a standing ovation. During a post-screening interview, Costner indicated that Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone spinoff 1883 may have borrowed elements from his own film as he had shared the script with Sheridan.

Kevin Costner feels Francis Ford Coppola’s pain. Both invested their own millions — “just shy of $100 million” for Costner, he told me, and $120 million for Coppola — in ambitious movies that no one else wanted to fund.
“Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1” (which debuted out-of-competition at Cannes on May 19 to the extended standing ovation that is de rigueur these days) landed New Line/Warner Bros. as its stateside theatrical distributor in what Costner said was a “very modest” deal. He added that “Horizon” sold well to foreign territories at Cannes via K5, although it was slow going at first.
Coppola is still hoping someone will pay him to release his film. Costner is concerned that the auteur is vulnerable. “There’s people that will take advantage of you and I fear people will do that to Francis,” he said. “I’m worried about him, too. I feel they will do that to him.

Kevin Costner confirmed in a new GQ magazine cover story that reports claiming he spent $20 million of his own money to co-finance his new Western epic “Horizon: An American Saga” are not true, as he actually contributed more than that from his personal bank account.
“I know they say I’ve got $20 million of my own money in this movie,” Costner said. “It’s not true. I’ve got now about $38 million in the film. That’s the truth. That’s the real number.”
Costner funded “Horizon: An American Saga” alongside two investors who he has not yet publicly named. The Western saga spans four movies, two of which were shot back to back. Costner recently world premiered the three-hour first movie at the Cannes Film Festival to mixed reviews. Warner Bros. is releasing the first two installments in theaters this summer. Editor’s Note: This review originally ran during the 2024 Cannes Film Festival. Warner Bros. releases “Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1” in theaters on June 28.
Good luck to you and all who plod along dusty roads with you if the first chapter of Kevin Costner’s “Horizon: An American Saga” compels you to seek out the forthcoming second one. This Civil War-era, Old West expansion epic is a $100 million vanity project that finds the actor/filmmaker in familiar terrain, and with the gall to cast himself as an apparently swoon-inducing cowboy in a world where all the women are either ball busters, prostitutes, or profoundly stupid, and the men hayseeds or Great American Heroes.

Kevin Costner has been in the saddle long enough to know the difference between a big-screen feature Western like Dances With Wolves, a miniseries like Hatfields & McCoys or a longform like Yellowstone. All those projects have done well by him and he’s done well by them. His connection to the quintessential Americana genre and the rugged lands it calls home is indubitable. So why is his sprawling new frontier tale, Horizon: An American Saga, such a clumsy slog? It plays like a limited series overhauled as a movie, but more like a hasty rough cut than a release ready for any format.

Kevin Costner is one of the most recognizable names in the movie industry, without a doubt. He has starred in numerous movies, including The Untouchables, Jkf, The Bodyguard, and others, but it seems that was Kevin Costner really likes is the western genre. He starred in Wyatt Earp, directed and starred in Dances with Wolves, which earned him two Oscars, and starred in the western series Hatfields & McCoys and Yellowstone, and he is currently working on a four-part movie series, Horizon: An American Saga, which is going to be set in the Civil War era, and we have just received confirmation of the first film’s epic runtime. The movie is set to premiere on May 19, 2024 at the Cannes Film Festival, and ahead of the premiere, a new official trailer has been revealed!
In short, Kevin Costner is directing, starring, and co-writing the saga, with Jon Baird joining him as co-writer.

Kevin Costner‘s two-part western epic passion project is just over the horizon. The first part of Horizon: An American Saga premieres next month and Warner Bros. has just released the new official second trailer for the film. The Yellowstone actor has returned to the director’s seat for the first time in over twenty years for these films. Costner began work on this story in 1988 and he has more movies planned. The main character that he invented for this film in 1988 was so important to him that he even named his son, Hayes, after him. He hopes the movies can be a big franchise and that years from now, people can binge-watch hours of Horizon in theaters.
In addition to directing and starring in the two-film saga, Kevin Costner also produced the project and co-wrote the script alongside Jon Baird. “In the great tradition of Warner Bros. Pictures’ iconic Westerns,...

Kevin Costner’s two-part Western epic “Horizon: An American Saga,” which makes its world premiere in the Out of Competition section of the Cannes Film Festival, has been acquired in France by Metropolitan FilmExport, one of the country’s biggest distributors. Daniel Baur’s K5 Intl. is handling international rights.
The films star Costner, Sienna Miller, Abbey Lee and Sam Worthington. The writers are Jon Baird and Costner. Costner produced alongside Howard Kaplan and Mark Gillard. Warner Bros. is releasing the films in the U.S. on June 28 and Aug. 16.
“Horizon” takes place over the course of 15 years on America’s Western frontier, dramatizing the lives of settlers and Indigenous groups in the region. Costner shared footage from the project at CinemaCon last month.

We’re big champions of physical media here at JoBlo, and despite ongoing claims that it will soon be going the way of the Dodo, we’ve yet to see its demise. Kevin Costner is also a big fan of physical media, and when asked by Deadline about the supposed “death of the DVD,” he was quick to jump to its defence.
“Death of the what? DVD is not dead, at all,” Kevin Costner said. “That’s what they’d have you believe. Maybe it’s not making the same amount of money, but just try to go ask for that from the studio. They won’t give that up. A lot of people that like my movies, they can’t get to a theater, and they’re waiting for that moment. You can’t make your film for the opening weekend. You have to make it for its life.

Kevin Costner is one of the most recognizable names in the movie industry, without a doubt. He has starred in numerous movies, including The Untouchables, Jkf, The Bodyguard, and others, but it seems that was Kevin Costner really likes is the western genre. He starred in Wyatt Earp, directed and starred in Dances with Wolves, which earned him two Oscars and starred in the western series Hatfields & McCoys and Yellowstone. It is obvious that he likes the Wild West in all shapes and sizes, and his next movie projects confirm that. Costner is currently working on a four-part movie series, Horizon: An American Saga, which is going to be set in the Civil War era, and we have just received confirmation of the first film’s epic runtime.

Kevin Costner directs and stars in Horizon: An America Saga – and here’s the new trailer for the film, which has just landed in the UK.
Now that it’s confirmed UK audiences will be getting to see Horizon: An American Saga on the big screen, Warner Bros in the UK has amped up its promotion for Kevin Costner’s hugely ambitious series of westerns.
Kevin Costner stars in the film, as well as co-writing the script and directing. We’re getting Horizon: An American Saga – Part 1 in cinemas on 28th June 2024 in the UK, with Horizon: An American Saga – Part 2 arriving in August. Costner’s plan is to then shoot the concluding two films this year, presumably with an eye on releasing them in 2025.

Finally: we’ve had confirmation that Horizon: An American Saga, from Kevin Costner, will be heading to UK cinemas this summer.
Long time readers of this site may be aware of my personal levels of excitement surrounded Kevin Costner’s return to directing for the first time since 2003’s Open Range. He’s going for it too with Horizon: An American Saga, a planned collection of four films, of which two have been shot and are being readied for release.
We’ve known for some time that the films – the first of which debuts at the Cannes Film Festival – will be heading to cinemas in the US courtesy of Warner Bros (via New Line). The non-us rights situation had been less clear, but we finally have an answer: Warner Bros is also distributing here in the UK.
What’s more, it’s going to be putting the first two films out into cinemas.

Kevin Costner and Francis Ford Coppola have both put their money where their mouth is, to make huge films outside the studio system…
At the time of writing, filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola is 85 years old. He owns a thriving vineyard business, and holds enough rights to his films to enjoy the kind of income most of us would happily content ourselves with, without him having to anything else. Contemporaries such as Brian De Palma and Peter Weir, as they’ve headed towards their eighth and ninth decades, have retired from filmmaking. Coppola, meanwhile, has gathered up all his chips and pushed them with some fervour towards the middle of the metaphorical table.
His long-cherished passion project is the gamble in question, a film by the name of Megalopolis that’s finished, and has cost, conservatively, around $100-120m to realise.
With no movie studio willing to back the film at the point of its conception,...

Hold onto your horses, folks! Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga is riding into CinemaCon 2024 to share the latest about the Yellowstone and Dances With Wolves star’s Western epic. On Monday, we learned the first part of Horizon: An American Saga, which will debut at the Cannes Film Festival on May 19. Still, attendees moseying into CinemaCon got a new look at the sprawling drama of how settlers won the West.
During the Warner Bros. panel, Costner addressed the CinemaCon crowd, saying the movie is a bit about the promise of America. The idea was that if you were mean enough, tough enough, you could take what you wanted, but in the process, you stepped on people who had been here for 1000 years. But the film does not pass judgment, and that story, to him, was drama.

Kevin Costner is hoping a few years from now, moviegoers will have the opportunity to binge four Horizon movies in theaters.
“Maybe a year and a half, two years from now, they will come (to theaters) for 12 hours,” he told the assembled crowd of theater owners Tuesday at CinemaCon, where he teased his two-part Horizon films.
So far, only two of his planned four films have been made, he acknowledged, but he has two more scripts ready to go, should the risky film project he helped finance be successful.
“When I think about the promise of America, there was a promise out here, if you could go. If you were tough enough, if you were mean enough, if you were resourceful enough, if you were lucky enough, you could take what you wanted in America,” Costner said of the appeal of the American West. “That promise meant that we step...

The wraps are coming off Kevin Costner’s hugely ambitious Horizon: An American Saga, with a world premiere next month.
While we still don’t have news on a UK distributor for the film, Kevin Costner is gearing up to release the first two parts of his return to directing over the coming months. That’s in the form of Horizon: An American Saga, envisaged as four western movies. So far, Costner has shot two of them, which are being released this summer. Then, it’s back before the cameras to shoot chapters three and four.
Now we get news that at least the first film is to get its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival next month, with a debut set for Sunday 19th May. Kevin Costner will be attending the premiere along with members of his cast. And he sounds really rather pleased about it all.

Part one of “Horizon: An American Saga,” the multi-film Western epic that Kevin Costner left “Yellowstone” to make, will hit theaters on June 28, with part two to follow on August 16. Warner Bros. released a trailer for the two-part film on Monday.
The trailer promises a sprawling, colorful, violent Western film about Manifest Destiny. It’s about the settling of the titular town during the years of the Civil War, as the American frontier pushes westward and settlers come into conflict with the people indigenous to the land. “There’s no army on this Earth that are going to stop those wagons coming,” a Union Army officer played by Costner’s “Yellowstone” co-star Danny Huston warns in something like the trailer’s thesis statement.
Costner wrote the script for “Horizon” with Jon Baird, produces with Howard Kaplan and Mark Gillard, directs, and stars. It’s his first time directing a film since 2003’s “Open Range,...

Academy Award-winning visionary filmmaker Kevin Costner directs New Line Cinema’s vast “Horizon: An American Saga” Chapters One and Two, a multi-faceted chronicle covering the Civil War expansion and settlement of the American West.
