There's something about low-to-mid-budget action movies and Netflix that just seem to go very well together. Maybe it's just because action fans are loyal and these movies are often the ones that people don't get a chance to see in theaters. Maybe it's because people are often just looking for something easy enough to half watch in the background while doing other things. Right or wrong, action can be viewed as a better option for that than, say, an Oscar-winning drama. Whatever equation has made it so, Russell Crowe and Liam Hemsworth's "Land of Bad" has found a sizable audience on Netflix as of late.
The action/war flick from director William Eubank, who previously helmed "Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin," has been sitting comfortably in the Netflix Top 10 films chart for the past couple of weeks. As of this writing, it is sitting at number three behind "Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire...

"This don't guy is not fighting for God & Country, he's fighting for family..." Warner Bros Ent. has revealed an official trailer for an action thriller crime movie called Gunner, which is the (last) name of the guy and not a reference to a "gunner", though in this case both are the same. A24’s “Love Lies Bleeding,” our top new release to stream this week, is more of an Independent Spirit Awards contender than an Academy Awards contender. Watch out for Kristen Stewart in Best Lead Performance and, especially, Katy O’Brian for Best Breakthrough Performance for her work as unstable, steroid-abusing bodybuilder Jackie Cleaver. But there is one Oscar category that “Love Lies Bleeding” should win with extreme prejudice: Best Makeup and Hairstyling. Hair department head Megan Daum came up with the widest variety of mullets ever put on film. Ed Harris somehow has a bald mullet. It’s incredible.
“Love Lies Bleeding” is a romantic crime thriller from director Rose Glass. Gym manager Lou (Stewart) and itinerant bodybuilder Jackie (O’Brian) meet and fall in love, but there are many threats to their relationship, including Lou’s slimy brother-in-law JJ (Dave Franco) and dangerous crime boss father Lou Sr. (Harris). If they want to be free,...

Though it is about a bunch of surfer bros. The Greatest Surf Movie in the Universe is a raunchy Team America-esque stop-motion puppet + live action Australian comedy, narrated by Luke Hemsworth, and starring some of the world’s best surfers voicing lifelike figurines of themselves, including Kelly Slater, Mick Fanning, Mason Ho, Griffin Colapinto, Jack Freestone, Craig Anderson and Matt Wilkinson. Having your famous father’s last name would seem to be a huge advantage for someone who wants to pursue a career in Tinseltown. It appears that Joseph Baena is attempting to steer clear of such a situation. He wants to earn his way, just like his father did.
After rumors surfaced in 2011 that Arnold Schwarzenegger had fathered a son in 1997 with Mildred Baena, the family housekeeper, the public was first introduced to the actor’s youngest child, Joseph Baena.
Instagram @joebaenawdw
Although Baena enjoys working out and even dabbles in bodybuilding, he does not feel obligated to follow in his father’s footsteps. While Schwarzenegger is known for his intense bodybuilding workouts, Baena focuses on overall fitness and functional strength, which includes swimming, cycling, running, and weightlifting.

"This ain't gonna wipe your slate clean..." Vertigo Films has revealed the second official trailer for a gritty crime thriller meets action film titled Bad Hombres, from filmmaker John Stalberg Jr (following Muzzle last year). This one already opened in the US earlier this year (here's the first trailer) and is out now, this is another trailer from the UK distributor. Two undocumented immigrants looking for work take a job digging a hole, only to discover their employers are psychopathic criminals. They become embroiled in a blood bath, with one of them revealing a secret past that just might save them. Bad Hombres stars Diego Tinoco and Hemky Madera as Cesar and Alfonso, respectively, along with Luke Hemsworth, Thomas Jane, Nick Cassavetes, Paul Johansson, with Tyrese Gibson playing "The Man With No Name." This looks rather generic, with a batch of criminals crossing each other and getting into even more trouble,...

It’s been four years since The Avenue first launched, and the indie distributor just scored its first top 10 film with William Eubank’s “Land of Bad.”
The action flick starring Liam Hemsworth, Russell Crowe, Luke Hemsworth, Ricky Whittle and Milo Ventimiglia opened on Feb. 16, had the fourth-highest per screen average over the holiday weekend and was the only independent film in the top 10.
While indie films in awards contention can often make a modest box office dent, it’s unusual for an action film like “Land of Bad” to reach such heights: the actioner’s four-day total on opening weekend was $2.1 million from 1,057 screens.
President of domestic marketing and distribution JJ Caruth says the box office success of “Land of Bad” is a strong signal that audiences are hungry for more action-packed movies. “I’m just happy to see an independent film succeed at the box office. It’s...

The South Korean box office had a familiar look. Dark drama, “Exhuma” dominated the chart with a more than 50% market share for the fourth weekend in a row. And, for the third successive weekend, “Dune 2” placed second.
“Exhuma,” about two shaman, a feng shui master and a mortician who attempt to reverse the mysterious events happening to a U.S.-based Korean family, earned $5.80 million between Friday and Sunday. That represented a 67% share of the overall box office market, according to data from tracking service Kobis, operated by the Korean Film Council (Kofic).
That lifted the film’s haul to $67.3 million after nearly four weeks on release. The figure is the highest this year by far and the fourth highest performance since the beginning of the Covid pandemic.

Sharon Stone has never been afraid of a risk, fashion-related or otherwise. The Basic Instinct star took a risk when she supported AIDS research in the ’90s. She also faced a huge challenge when her vertebral artery ruptured in 2001, requiring a seven-hour procedure that saved her life.
So, style risks likely don’t seem so serious to Stone these days. This was evident when she appeared at the Cinema For Peace Gala on February 19. The 65-year-old’s outfit was surprising enough that a notable political figure called her out on stage.

Russell Crowe is a beloved Oscar-winning actor with movies like "Gladiator" and "A Beautiful Mind" under his belt. But recently he's entered a different phase of his career where he appears to simply be having fun, with "Unhinged" and "The Pope's Exorcist" ranking as some of his recent credits. Now, he's got a brand-new action movie called "Land of Bad" in theaters that seems to have slipped under the radar. Nonetheless, it still managed to crack the top ten at the box office over the weekend. That's the power of Crowe and not one but two Hemsworth brothers.

The European Film Market is off to a strong start, buoyed by post-strike optimism and a truly impressive lineup of projects on offer in Berlin this year, including available indie movies with the A-list draws of stars such as Margot Robbie, Dave Bautista, Scarlett Johansson, and Will Smith. Coming off a solid Sundance and improving box office figures, both in the U.S. and Europe, hope appears to be slowly returning to an indie film industry that seemed near the brink just six months ago.
But many EFM sellers still see a cloud over the horizon with the unresolved issue of the home entertainment market, particularly the all-important pay-one window. Ancillary revenues have always been the true driver of the indie market, but as streaming comes to dominate post-theatrical exploitation and the biggest platforms are pulling back on how much independent fare they buy, many are questioning how indie movies can make the numbers work.

For many people, a film like Land of Bad might not have enough to catch the eye. However, personally, almost everything about it made me instantly want to add it to my watchlist: a straightforward, action-driven premise based on a rescue operation; a quite decent cast with Liam (The Hunger Games) and Luke Hemsworth (Next Goal Wins), Russell Crowe (The Nice Guys), Ricky Whittle (The 100), and Milo Ventimiglia (This is Us); and most importantly, it’s directed by William Eubank, who made the overlooked yet loved amongst many of the people who’ve seen it, Underwater.

There’s a particularly intense scene early on in the new war movie Land of Bad. A young soldier is faced with a difficult choice when it comes to breakfast: Fruit Loops or Frosted Flakes. He stares at the two boxes intently, turning them over to compare their nutritional content (or lack thereof). It’s practically a metaphor for the choices facing moviegoers at their local multiplex these days.
A prime example would be William Eubank’s action-thriller, which feels like a Michael Bay film if he faced budgetary restraints. But for all its familiar aspects, Land of Bad does have a few things going for it, namely the presence of not one but two Hemsworth brothers (sadly, though, Chris isn’t one of them) and Russell Crowe, who spends most of the movie sitting in a chair staring at a screen and manages to completely steal it anyway.

Evan Rachel Wood Still Doesn’t Know ‘Westworld’ Ending After Cancellation: “It Keeps Me Up at Night”
Evan Rachel Wood knows about as much as fans when it comes to what Westworld creators Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan had up their sleeves for the final season of their hit HBO series — which is to say, she knows nothing at all.
Wood, who spoke to The Hollywood Reporter ahead of her New York stage debut as Audrey in the off-Broadway production of Little Shop of Horrors, revealed during the sit-down that she had asked the Westworld creators about where the show was headed following the season four finale, “Que Sera Sera.” In it, humanity — and most sentient life — essentially ends after a season that saw the park androids seizing control, flipping the power scales to control humans the way hosts once were.

Another Russell Crowe and Liam Hemsworth collaboration was not a square on our 2024 pop culture Bingo card, yet it looks like we're about to check it off. Moviegoers are due to see the pair of Aussies team up for the second time in as many years in February's military action thriller "Land of Bad." The pair recently co-starred in the 2022 movie "Poker Face" (no relation to the TV show of the same name), a thriller about a high stakes poker game gone wrong that was directed by Crowe himself.
This time around it's not a card game that goes wrong, but a mission. "Land of Bad" follows a group of military men on an extraction assignment in the Philippines that takes a bloody turn, leaving one young officer at the mercy of the elements and local militia. Fortunately, he's not alone: he's got Russell Crowe's drone pilot droning in his ear,...

When a Delta Force team is ambushed in enemy territory, a rookie officer played by the other brother Liam Hemsworth refuses to abandon them. Their only hope lies with an Air Force drone pilot as the eyes in the sky during a brutal 48-hour battle for survival in the jungle. Russell Crowe co-stars as the drone pilot, with Luke Hemsworth, Ricky Whittle, Milo Ventimiglia, Daniel MacPherson, Gunner Wright, and Lincoln Lewis.

Exclusive: Coming off a two-season starring role on Fox’s drama The Cleaning Lady, Oliver Hudson is staying in business with the network. The actor-producer has entered a broadcast direct deal with Fox Entertainment for him and his producing partner John Stalberg to develop comedy and drama projects that will be fully owned and distributed by Fox.
Hudson played one of the leads, FBI agent Garrett Miller, in The Cleaning Lady, co-produced by Warner Bros. TV and Fox Entertainment. The popular character was killed off in the Season 2 finale, which aired earlier this year.
Hudson already has a pre-existing relationship with Fox as a producer. He and Joe Buck are developing the animated comedy Daddy Issues for the network, with Fox Entertainment and company-owned animation house Bento Box Entertainment producing. Plot: A down-and-out football coach (Michael Fassbender) is sent to American Samoa to coach their infamously awful team.
Review: Inspirational soccer (football) stories are having a moment, with Next Goal Wins another underdog story comparable to Ted Lasso. While not as deep as that occasionally profound show, Taika Waititi‘s long-delayed film should put a smile on the face of anyone who likes a good underdog story a la Cool Runnings. The film is based on a documentary of the same name. It proves to be a natural fit for Waititi’s sensibilities, with him seeming more at home here with a film closer to What We Do in the Shadows or Hunt for the Wilderpeople than any of the Thor films he made or even Jojo Rabbit.
Waititi himself only plays a small on-screen role, with his local priest acting as a quasi-narrator for what would come off as a perhaps cliched inspiration fable,...
