Blair Underwood is detailing why he opted to not join “Sex and the City” three seasons before his iconic turn as Dr. Robert Leeds.
Underwood told the A.V. Club that he first turned down a role earlier in the series that centered on Kim Cattrall dating a Black man.
Underwood was later cast as fan favorite sports medicine physician Dr. Robert Leeds, who becomes Miranda’s (Cynthia Nixon) boyfriend after moving into her building. The character appeared in multiple episodes of Season 6 in 2003.
“I actually did say ‘no’ the first time,” Underwood said. “The first time they had offered the role, to be honest with you, it was about how Samantha was fascinated by dating a Black man and wanted to know if, uh, all of the rumors were true about our anatomy! And I said, ‘Listen, I’m honored, thank you, but I just don’t want to play a character based on race,...

Samantha Jones is staying in London according to actress Kim Cattrall.
The “Sex and the City” alum tweeted that she will not reprise her role for Season 3 of revival series “And Just Like That.” Cattrall briefly appeared in the Season 2 finale in a scene filmed separate from the core cast.
Life & Style reported that Cattrall was set to be back for Season 3, with a source telling the outlet that Cattrall would again film away from the rest of the cast. The publication said HBO was “bending over backwards to pay her an absolute fortune, and it’s all on her terms because she’s so central to the franchise.”
Not true, according to the actress herself.
“Aw that’s so kind but I’m not,” Cattrall commented when an Elle UK article claiming her return was reposted on X.

Could you imagine David Duchovny as Danny Tanner, Joey Gladstone, or Jesse Katsopolis on Full House? Well, it could have happened, as the actor recently revealed on his Fail Better podcast that he auditioned for each one of those roles.
Duchovny obviously didn’t get the parts, but at the time, he was certain it was going to happen. “I auditioned for all three parts on Full House,” Duchovny said. “At first, they had me for, I think, the dad. And then they had me for the Stamos character. And then they had me for the other guy. I was thinking, ‘I’ve got to get one of these, and it’s going to change my life.’” At the time, Duchovny was a struggling actor who was auditioning for a lot of different pilots. “I had plenty of those pilots that I went up for when I was first out in L.

Some nude scenes are meant to be sexy. Others are meant to be funny.
David Duchovny took the latter approach in his latest movie, “Reverse the Curse,” which he wrote and directed. The 63-year-old actor stars in the film as an ailing Red Sox fan whose condition worsens every time his beloved baseball team loses. When his adult son moves back home to take care of him, he manufactures a fake winning streak to keep his dad’s spirits high.
In one scene in the film, Duchovny and his co-star Logan Marshall-Green are changing in a men’s locker room. Naked, Duchovny’s character asks his son, “Are you uptight naked in front of your father?” After seeing his bare bottom half, Duchovny hugs him and says, “That’s a perfectly respectable prick you’ve got there, son.”

It looks like Aidan Shaw might have some competition for Carrie Bradshaw’s affection when And Just Like That… Season 3 returns. While season 2 left Carrie waiting for Aidan’s youngest son to age out of his troubled teen years so they could resume their romance, it doesn’t look like she’ll be waiting alone.
Last week, it was revealed that three new guest stars would be joining the cast. While the team behind the Sex and the City reboot didn’t share how they will factor into the ladies’ lives, two of the three new stars have been spotted on set. At least one of those new characters appears to be portraying a love interest for Carrie. We have yet to determine what that means for Carrie and Aidan.

Max’s And Just Like That… is shaping its third season with three new cast additions and two promotions as production continues in New York City.
Mehcad Brooks, Jonathan Cake and Logan Marshall-Green are set to recur in new roles.
Sebastiano Pigazzi and Dolly Wells are getting bumped up to series regulars. They will return as Giuseppe, Anthony’s (Mario Cantone) new love interest in Season 2 and Joy, a possible new love interest for Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) who loves greyhounds more than children, respectively.
Additionally, John Corbett has been spotted on set following the latest heartbreaking break between his Aidan Shaw and Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker). Are they going to try to make their relationship work even though Aidan’s underage sons still need him? I mean, she bought that massive house to fill with family and love.

Playwright Annie Baker has already experienced tremendous success on the stage, having won a Pulitzer Prize for her play The Flick and a MacArthur Genius Grant for “mining the minutiae of how we speak, act, and relate to one another and the absurdity and tragedy that result from the limitations of language.” This philosophy is incredibly evident in her subtly moving film debut Janet Planet, which offers an invigorating take on familiar beats and ideas.
Janet Planet follows an introverted 11-year-old girl, Lucy, who spends the summer with her mother Janet, as they spend time with three people who affect them in profoundly different ways. It’s an incredibly restrained, unfussy film that refuses to pander to the audience in narrative or exposition, but it does reward patience in incredible ways.

Many people know David Duchovny for his years playing Agent Mulder on the popular sci-fi series The X-Files, but he’s also a very accomplished writer. For his second outing in the director’s chair, Duchovny adapted his own novel, Bucky F*cking Dent, into the poignant dramedy Reverse the Curse.
We at FandomWire got the opportunity to talk with Duchovny, along with stars Logan Marshall-Green and Stephanie Beatriz, about Reverse the Curse.
Reverse the Curse Interview
FandomWire: All of you have varying degrees of connection to New York. I have to ask… was it hard having to root for the Red Sox in this movie?
Logan Marshall-Green: I didn’t have to cheer for the Red Sox. I think Teddy is a Yankees fan, but not as avid or certainly obsessive as Marty. But it was handed down to him, as you saw in the first scene.
David Duchovny: Yeah,...

David Duchovny made his film directorial debut with House of D in 2004. While he has helmed multiple television series episodes, including The X-Files, Bones, Californication, and Aquarius, Duchovny has spent more of the last twenty years writing novels than helming projects. His sophomore film effort behind the camera is Reverse The Curse, based on Duchovny’s novel Bucking F*ing Dent. Bringing together friends in the industry for supporting roles and casting Logan Marshall-Green and Stephanie Beatriz alongside himself, this is an emotional comedy-drama with a sports theme.
Reverse The Curse follows Ted (Logan Marshall-Green) who works as a peanut slinger at Yankee Stadium. Having a terse relationship with his father, Marty (David Duchovny), Ted returns home to learn his dad is dying of cancer. At the suggestion of Marty’s nurse Mariana (Stephanie Beatriz), Ted learns about his father’s past and what led to their distance from one another.

Plot: Ted is a failed writer-turned-Yankees Stadium peanut slinger who moves back home after learning of the failing health of his Red Sox-obsessed father, Marty. While Marty strives to make amends for his past, his health drops abruptly whenever his beloved Sox lose a game. To keep his dad’s spirits up, Ted takes matters into his own hands and manufactures a winning streak with the help of a crew of dad’s neighborhood pals. An ode to the bond between father and son, this warm and witty film demonstrates how life truly belongs to the losers, and that the longshots are the ones worth betting on.

After "Madame Web" somehow became an unlikely hit on Netflix despite being a bad movie and a horrible box office misfire, it seems audiences remained hungry for Spider-Man movies that don't really feature Spider-Man -- because they just made an excellent 2018 movie, one that is essentially a much better "Venom" than the one we got, a hit once again.
That movie is "Upgrade," the 2018 sci-fi horror film that premiered at SXSW to great acclaim and has spent the past few days among the top five most-streamed films on Netflix in the U.S. (via FlixPatrol). That's a good thing, too; "Upgrade" is a fantastic and underseen movie with an interesting world, inventive cinematography, and some pretty gnarly action. Despite positive reviews, the movie wasn't a flop, but it wasn't a huge hit either, making $17 million on a $3 million budget. At the least, it led to more Leigh Whannell movies, as...

The genre of cyberpunk, as niche as it might seem at first, provides but a backdrop for humanity’s everlasting problems and conflicts and merely adds a spectacular aesthetic. It’s not that technology is bad or corporations rule over the world; it’s that people abuse power and position themselves above those they deem different.
If you’re a true cyberpunk connoisseur, you must, like us, be starving for new movies and TV shows in this setting. But we’ve got you: here’s the best cyberpunk film you’ve never heard about.
It’s an Upgrade from Classic Cyberpunk
Is it possible to make a groundbreaking cyberpunk movie with only $3M in production budget and a director who almost exclusively tackled horror films before? Apparently, it is — and that’s how Upgrade came to be. Coming from The Invisible Man’s Leigh Whannell and starring Prometheus’ Logan Marshall-Green,...

It’s always fascinating when a movie with a top star, and directed by another star, goes as far under the radar as Steve Buscemi‘s “The Listener,” starring Tessa Thompson, has.
But in the case of this particularly gentle movie — available on VOD now for $6.99 — maybe that’s part of its DNA. Like the mental health helpline operator Thompson plays, this is a movie that’s there if you need it: Quiet, thoughtful, and totally shunning the kind of splashiness that most movies are thought to require these days to stand out.
“The Listener” premiered at the Venice Film Festival in 2022, where it was the closing night film of the Venice Days sidebar. On April 13, it was the closing night film of the Sarasota Film Festival, out of competition — in this over 18-month festival journey, it’s also made stops at the festivals in Vienna, Thessaloniki, Stockholm, The Hague,...

That turned out to be no small thing, following the reveal that they would be following in the footsteps of a game-changing storyline in the canon first introduced in "The Next Generation" -- the so-called Progenitors and their role as, essentially, the creators of all sentient humanoid life in the galaxy. "It isn't about me... I'm just hearing their stories, they're the ones living them." Vertical has revealed their trailer for an indie film titled The Listener, a solo drama starring Tessa Thompson as the only person actually in the film. The latest work directed by Steve Buscemi, who also made the underrated Interview back in 2007. After first premiering at festivals in 2022 and playing throughout 2023 on the festival circuit, The Listener is finally set for a proper debut at the end of March this year. Beth is a crisis helpline volunteer that gets on the phone every night, fielding calls from people feeling lonely, broken, and hopeless. During tonight’s shift, the stakes rise: is this the night she will save a hurting soul - or lose one? Tessa Thompson stars as Beth; other voices heard on the phone come from actors Rebecca Hall, Derek Cecil, Margaret Cho, Blu del Barrio,...

Netflix kicked off February with news of the streaming service’s 2024 film slate.
The steamer, which landed 18 Oscar nominations this year – including seven for Bradley Cooper’s “Maestro” – will debut numerous populist films in 2024, including new projects from Jamie Foxx and Cameron Diaz, Mark Wahlberg and Halle Berry, Jenifer Lopez, Millie Bobby Brown, Eddie Murphy, and more.
Well-known directors with movies set to premiere on Netflix this year include Tyler Perry (two titles), McG, Richard Linklater, and Lee Daniels. Comedian Jerry Seinfeld will also make his directorial debut with “Unfrosted: The Pop-Tart Story.”
On the awards front, while it’s too early to tell which projects might pop – and what movies Netflix might acquire for release this year, similarly to how the studio purchased Todd Haynes’ “May December” at the Cannes Film Festival last year – titles to flag include “The Piano Lesson” from Malcolm Washington with Samuel L. Canadian filmmaker Denys Arcand’s satire “Testament” will open the 44th edition of Fantasporto, which runs March 1-10 in Portugal’s second city, Porto. Chinese fantasy epic “Creation of Gods I: Kingdom of Storms,” directed by Wuershan, closes the eclectic event.
The festival, which was named by MovieMaker magazine this year as one of the “25 coolest festivals in the world,” is headed by film critics Beatriz Pacheco Pereira and Mário Dorminsky. Around 600 feature films were submitted this year and 1,200 shorts.
Pacheco Pereira says they select films that have a “special touch but still a universal language.” Dorminsky adds: “We try to discover new directors.” These directors – having established a relationship with the festival – often return with their subsequent films, he says.

We’ve all got that friend. The one who convinces us to push our boundaries or take that crazy risk, even though we have a hunch we’ll probably get hurt. They’re exciting, they’re cool, maybe even supportive, but they tend to lead us down the road to trouble, only to duck out when the consequences roll around. Film has a long history of these toxic troublemakers. Looking back, the Horror/Thriller genre was practically built on the backs of these smiling devils, who lure us in with their fun-loving wiles, then lead us off the side of a cliff.

Horror doesn’t always have to be jump scare after jump scare or a non-stop gore fest. It doesn’t have to have Aliens, Terminators, or Predators to say nothing of any of the other monsters we’ve seen over the years. Movies that don’t include those coveted horror checklists typically get lumped into the thriller category like Silence of the Lambs or even Get Out. Funny how those are the movies that the Globes and Oscars want to award. Without a shadow of a doubt horror films that can be labeled something a little more friendly to draw more audience demographics or get better ink in reviews. I’m here...

After getting off to a shaky start, David Duchovny’s second directorial feature Bucky F*cking Dent delivers some hard truths and profound wisdom against the backdrop of a 1978 Red Sox-Yankees American League East pennant game. Adapted from Duchovny’s book of the same name, his follow-up to 2004’s House of D finds Teddy (Logan Marshall-Green), an aspiring novelist and Yankees peanut vendor, returning home to visit his estranged, dying father Marty (Duchovny). His work is rejected by a literacy agent who encourages him to commit a crime, go to prison, and write about it––otherwise he’s just another uninteresting voice in changing times. Fresh from a divorce, the shaggy-haired Teddy is going through an awkward phase, stuck in a profound rut. His dad comments that despite being 33 his son looks both younger and older than he is.

Sci-fi thrillers that suggest tech is not to be trusted… Turn on the news at the moment – or ask Alexa to turn it on – and it is nothing but scare stories about the dangers of Artificial Intelligence, and how humankind will be taken over and wiped out by ultra-intelligent robots. It’s not like the sci-fi genre hasn’t been telling us this for decades!
The new sci-fi Sight Extended, released in the UK from 12 June, is a dark and imaginative exploration of the dangers of letting technology take over your life, and the terrifying possibilities of Augmented Reality running amok. To celebrate its release, here’s a look at some of the best films that suggest technological progress comes at a cost.

Stanley Kubrick was fascinated by the concept of Artificial Intelligence – he developed the film A.I: Artificial Intelligence, which was directed by Steven Speilberg.

“Reverse the Curse,” the second movie written and directed by David Duchovny, is based on Duchovny’s 2016 novel “Bucky F*cking Dent,” and whether or not the story is autobiographical, it feels autobiographical, and I mean that as a compliment. Set in the summer of 1978, it’s framed around one man’s obsession with the Boston Red Sox — meaning, of course, the curse of the Bambino, going back to 1918, the last time (until 2004) the Sox won the championship.
The man is Ted Fulilove, which is a terrible last name for a movie character, though he’s played by Duchovny as a cussed crab apple with an amusing misanthropic put-down for every occasion (like: “Closure’s for morons”). “Reverse the Curse” has a handful of characters, but it’s essentially a father-son two-hander — one of those dramadies in which the dad is a heartless-on-the-surface coot who was no good when it came...

For his sophomore feature, the follow-up to 2004’s little-seen indie House of D, David Duchovny serves up a similarly niche confection, a sometimes-zany black comedy based on his 2016 novel of the same name. The elevator pitch is a tough one; though it’s funny in places, the tone is all over the place, one minute aspiring for the arch, stoner laughs of PTA’s Inherent Vice, the next veering into straightforward sentiment with a rambling final section that hits a similar highway to the 2006 Sundance hit Little Miss Sunshine. There’s also the f-word: the looming curse of American baseball movies that don’t have the word Field in the title, which could hamper its commercial prospects in the wider world.
The setting is 1978, and Yankee Stadium peanut vendor Ted Fullilove (Logan Marshall-Green) has finally finished his novel, the weighty Magnum Opie. He thinks it’s a masterpiece, but his...

Baseball breeds romantics. Whether the sport itself invokes big-sky dreaming via its laid-back nature and open-ended gameplay, or America’s pastime dons nostalgia’s rose-colored glasses simply by enduring for a century and a half, who can say? Based on more than a hundred years of baseball movies, filmmaking fans have posited their own theories, their own connections, their own interpretations of what the diamond means, often interpreting the game as an extension of life itself.
Add one more to the canon. “Bucky F*cking Dent” casts its core story — of a dying father seeking forgiveness from his estranged son — against the 1978 pennant race between the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox. David Duchovny, adapting his own book of the same name and starring as the departing dad, never betrays his wistful, tender-hearted family drama by shifting focus to a game decided 45 years prior; instead, he deftly incorporates baseball...

For a movie with an expletive in its title, Bucky F*cking Dent sure displays a sentimental streak.
In David Duchovny’s film based on his well-received 2016 novel, a dying, and diehard, Red Sox fan is comforted by his son and friends who make up stories about imaginary victories — and even periodically use a garden hose and sound effects replicating a thunderstorm to make him think that certain games have been rained out. It’s like a modern-day version of the classic O. Henry story “The Last Leaf.”
Fortunately, the film, receiving its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival, also features enough caustic, irreverent humor to make its soppier aspects more palatable. Representing Duchovny’s first feature directorial effort since 2004’s House of D, it provides an excellent showcase for the actor’s particular brand of deadpan comedy as the sort of cranky, wisecracking guy who pretends to be taking his last breath,...

For more than 20 years, the Tribeca Festival has given up-and-coming directors a star-studded New York City showcase. This year, though, the fest is offering well-known actors a chance to show up as directors. Michael Shannon, David Duchovny, Chelsea Peretti, Jennifer Esposito, John Slattery, and partners Lily Rabe and Hamish Linklater all directed movies that will world premiere there, with Rabe and Linklater, Shannon, Peretti and Esposito making their feature directorial debuts.
In addition to those selections, Tribeca will feature the North American and New York premieres, respectively, of Steve Buscemi’s The Listener, which had its world premiere at the 2022 Venice Film Festival, and Randall Park’s Shortcomings, which debuted at Sundance.
