Matt Damon and Casey Affleck have both won Oscars for Massachusetts-set movies; Damon for writing “Good Will Hunting” with Casey’s brother Ben, and Casey for acting in the tragic drama “Manchester by the Sea.” Damon and the Afflecks’ latest Boston-set team-up, heist comedy “The Instigators,” is unlikely to win them any additional gold, but it’s a fun ride nevertheless.
Damon — reuniting with his “Bourne Identity” director Doug Liman — stars as Rory, a financially strapped middle-aged man who decides to give heisting a shot. He teams up with Cobby for some scores, and then gets his therapist Donna (Academy Award nominee Hong Chau) involved against her will. How does that make her feel? Not good! The cast also includes heavy hitters like Michael Stuhlbarg, Paul Walter Hauser, Ving Rhames, Alfred Molina, and Rob Gronkowski. Yes, this movie is so Boston that Gronk is in it. “The Instigators” is now...

Every time I watch a Despicable Me film, it just makes me wonder if life would be really simple if we were as mindless as the minions. But then you look at Gru and realize that maybe some things are worth fighting for, like your place in this world. I mean, he is weak, talentless, and sometimes even dumb, yet he wants to become the number one villain in the world. In short, Gru is an inspiration. A beacon of hope who motivates us to not give up no matter how pathetic we are. Sorry, Gru, it wasn’t personal. But these are a few of the character traits that I felt were missing in Despicable Me 4. And even though it was fun, it wasn’t very impactful. Or maybe it was just me who expected more. So, without further ado, let’s explore the events of the film...

Despicable Me 4 Box Office (Worldwide): Crosses $350 Million Mark Overseas( Photo Credit – YouTube )

Illumination and Universal’s Despicable Me 4 handily crossed the six-century mark at the global box office this week, now with $632M through Thursday. The latest in the series has pushed the worldwide running total for the Despicable Me/Minions franchise to $5.3B, overtaking Transformers ($5.295B) and the Avatar movies ($5.268B). This puts the franchise at No. 12 on the all-time global chart.

Is the Despicable Me franchise a Darwinist project in which the Minions started their evolution back at the beginning of life on Earth, or did intelligent design deliver Gru his wacky yellow Tic-Tac workers? More importantly, are the films’ writers finally ready to answer the Hitler question?
When Despicable Me premiered in the summer of 2010, the star of the smash-hit kid’s comedy wasn’t Steve Carell playing the lead villain Gru, or Jason Segel’s alternate antagonist Vector, or even the thankfully-since-fired Russell Brand as the brilliant scientist Dr. Nefario. No, regardless of the billing order, the undeniable headliner of the massively successful movie that launched a seven-film franchise was the collective order of the Minions, Gru’s colorful cronies whose slapstick antics and love of bananas captivated children and adults alike to the tune of a half-billion-dollar return at the box office.

Fourteen years ago, ‘Despicable Me’ premiered in theatres, winning the hearts of children and adults alike. Audiences all over the world fell in love with Gru, his adopted daughters, and, of course, the minions. ‘Despicable Me’ was huge, and there was no doubt that a sequel was in the works. Fast forward fourteen years, and not only has there been a ‘Despicable Me’ sequel, but two spin-off films that focus on the minions, and a third and fourth film has been added to Gru’s story. With all of the minion mania feeling so far away, audiences are beginning to question the integrity of the fourth film… was ‘Despicable Me 4’ really needed? So are his girls, and the minions, as well as the movie’s stellar performance at the Box Office. The franchise has already broken some crazy Box Office records. And it is on the way to break some more.

Down at the Universal Studios offices, the staff are undoubtedly doing The Twist in celebration of Twisters much higher than expected opening weekend. Indeed, they have reason to celebrate, with even the most optimistic box office predictions estimating the film would only open in the $50 million-ish range (including ours). To everyone’s surprise, the movie rallied to an incredible $80.5 million opening, which makes it the third biggest opening of the year behind Inside Out 2 and Dune: Part Two.
This is a major win for Universal, with the film posting Oppenheimer-level numbers and a rock-solid A-minus CinemaScore. If word of mouth is good, this could leg out to a North American total in the $200 million plus range, although it will face steep competition next weekend from Deadpool & Wolverine. It’s also a major win for Glen Powell as a leading man, with Hollywood hyped on his potential for stardom...

In the fourth installment of the Despicable Me franchise, Gru (Steve Carrell) is officially a dad thanks to Gru Jr., who’s intent on tormenting him. However, peaceful family bliss soon comes grinding to a halt when criminal mastermind Maxime Le Mal (Will Ferrell) — and yet another archnemesis — escapes from prison and vows revenge against Gru.
It’s potentially the challenge of a lifetime to write a compelling, nay in any way descriptive, review of Despicable Me 4. If you are reading this and haven’t yet seen the movie, or even a single second of its latest trailer, you already know exactly what you’re about to read. People just love the Minions. With "Despicable Me 4" continuing to tear it up at the global box office, the franchise has crossed a major milestone, making a bit of history in the process. Illumination's signature series of films has now collectively crossed the $5 billion mark worldwide, making it the first animated franchise in history to do so. What's more, if things continue to go the way they're going, that number will be $6 billion and counting in just a few years.
"Despicable Me 4" once again topped the charts over the weekend, pulling in $44.6 million domestically in its second weekend. That represents just a 40% drop week-to-week following the sequel's record-setting opening weekend. Internationally, Gru and the Minions held strong as well, pulling in another $87.9 million from overseas markets. That puts the movie's running total at $437.8 million worldwide, with a lot of gas left in the tank. More importantly, it was...

Minions are back on the big screen with Despicable Me 4, but when should fans expect the animated sequel to be released online on streaming?
Illumination's Despicable Me 4 arrived in theaters on July 3 as the fourth primary film in the franchise and the sixth overall addition to the Despicable Me library.
But despite its sequel status, Gru and his minions are the box office heroes audiences have been waiting for as the animated comedy earned an impressive $122.6 million over the film's five-day domestic debut (per Variety).

Animation continue to the be hero of the summer office thanks to Despicable Me 4 and Inside Out 2, but Neon’s Longlegs can rightly take a bow after scoring the biggest opening for an independent horror pic in a decade with $22.6 million in ticket sales.
From Illumination and Universal, DM4 easily stayed atop the domestic box office chart in its second weekend with $44.7 million from 4,449 theaters as it jumped the $200 million mark to finish Sunday with a North American tally of $211.1 million. Overseas, Gru and the mischievous Minions also continued to stir up strong sales, earning $88 million from 78 markets for a foreign tally of $226.7 million and $437.8 million globally.
In a notable milestone, the Despicable Me/Minions franchise has crossed $5 billion mark in global ticket sales, a feat no animated franchise has achieved before. (Earlier this week, Illumination announced that a Minions 3 is in the works.)

Gru and the Minions are continuing their box office reign, topping newcomers “Longlegs” and “Fly Me to the Moon.”
Universal and Illumination’s “Despicable Me 4” will retain the No. 1 spot in its second weekend of release after earning $13.6 million on Friday. The animated fourquel is looking at a three-day frame of $44 million, down 41% from its debut; the film will surpass $200 million at the domestic box office.
“Longlegs” is still creeping its way to the best opening weekend for Neon after scoring $10 million on Friday from 2,510 theaters — a figure that includes $3 million in Thursday previews. The indie scarer, starring Nicolas Cage as a terrifying serial killer and scream queen Maika Monroe as an FBI agent, is looking at a $20 to $23 million opening weekend.
Despite its “C+” grade through CinemaScore’s survey of early crowds, which is pretty standard for horror films, director Osgood Perkins’ “Longlegs” has been earning mostly positive...

Steve Carell’s latest animated project, Despicable Me 4, has garnered an impressive box-office collection that opens doors for another project, set to release in the near future. Illumination Entertainment, who is currently on hot heels with the newly released animated movie, has announced the release of Minions 3.

However, this major update might turn out to be a huge mistake as it would risk franchise fatigue and potentially push away its dedicated fandom.
Minions 3‘s Release Date Has Been Announced
The Minions franchise has cemented itself as a strong brand which began as part of the Despicable Me series. Illumination Entertainment and Universal Pictures introduced the Minions in 2010’s Despicable Me which follows Steve Carell‘s Gru story who adopts three orphaned girls, which turns him into a loving father.
The movie introduced the yellow creatures as Gru’s loyal henchmen, whose comedic charms have captivated audiences’ attention.

Three things will remain to walk the earth for eternity when the apocalypse comes: Cockroaches, Keith Richards, and the Minions. Universal loves making money with Illumination‘s pill-shaped mischief makers, and after the success of Despicable Me 4, a third movie in the Minions franchise threatens parents’ wallets worldwide. Universal Pictures will release Illumination’s Minions 3 on Wednesday, June 30, 2027. Consider this your warning.

It’s not just Maxime Le Mal, the “Despicable Me 4” villain with the broad accent, that has a distinctly French flavor.
In fact, Universal and Illumination’s animated franchise boasts Gallic DNA throughout all of the hit movies. And even though Chris Renaud, the Oscar-nominated director of the latest “Despicable Me” and two of its predecessors, owes his French-sounding name to his Canadian origins, the helmer says “essentially everybody” working on the films is French. The only exceptions to this geographic over-representation are the writers (Mike White and Ken Daurio) and some of the storyboarder artists who are U.S.-based.
“Everything from what we call the layout, up through the animation, lighting and compositing — almost the entire team is French! The picture that you see is all compiled and created here in France,” says Renaud, who moved to Paris in 2010 to work on the first “Despicable Me” production...

The adventures of little yellow men and their lovable leader, Gru, helped Despicable Me and Universal create an unparalleled run at the box office. Every movie to date has taken home at least $250 million in the US. Minions: Rise of Gru made the most money of the franchise hits to date, topping $370 million domestic and spawning the “Gentleminions” phenomenon.
Whether Steve Carrell was the reason most people checked out the first movie is a question we’ll ask for years. Regardless, the comedy star has a bonafide franchise that continues to rake in the dough. With the sixth film in the franchise set to dominate the 4th of July weekend, it’s time for us to rank the series and see where Despicable Me 4 falls in the series.
SUGGESTEDMinions: The Rise of Gru Review: A Fun Family Adventure 6. Minions (2015)
Sadly, the first Minions experience ranks among the weakest of the franchise.

Backed by animated tentpoles like Despicable Me 4 and Inside Out 2, AMC Theatres reported a festive July 4 holiday.
The return of Gru and his Minions ruled the Fourth of July box office for the Universal and Illumination release with an estimated five-day domestic opening of $122.6 million from 4,428 theaters. The result had AMC Theatres pointing to 4.2 million patrons drawn during the July 3 to 7 period. That marked AMC’s busiest domestic Wednesday through Sunday period in 2024, and AMC Theatres CEO Adam Aron talked up the latest box office rebound for Hollywood titles at the local multiplex.
“Needless to say, we are quite pleased to see the strong showing from our U.S. moviegoers during the Fourth of July holiday weekend. … It’s also important to note that AMC’s weekend was driven by the wide-ranging appeal of several movies that offer distinct and diverse options,” Aron said in a statement on Monday.

The time for debates and dissent around Superhero Fatigue is over and it’s high time the fans admitted that the global symptom is trying to tell us something. Steve Carell’s latest animated dooblydoo, Despicable Me 4 has just shattered the box office expectations of 2024 by a mile and a half, and Marvel is yet to impress its viewers with a half-decent movie worthy of its reputation.

The “Despicable Me” franchise began in 2010 with the first animated film from creators/writers Sergio Pablos, Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio. The story focuses on a former supervillain turned secret agent named Gru (voiced by Steve Carell), and his adorable yellow sidekicks, the Minions. The original movie raked in $251.7 million in the United States alone, and $543 million total worldwide. Because of that breakout success, Universal Pictures and Illumination wanted more, more, more. Hence, there have been three “Despicable Me” direct sequels plus two spin-offs, “Minions” and “Minions: The Rise of Gru.”
In addition to the six feature films, the ever-growing franchise includes several short films, a TV special, video games, and a Universal Studios ride. “Despicable Me” is the highest-grossing animated film franchise of all time, earning more than $4.6 billion (and counting), with “Shrek” in second place and “Toy Story” in third place.

Gru and the Minions set off fireworks at the box office as America celebrated its birthday. “Despicable Me 4,” the latest chapter in Universal and Illumination’s long-running franchise about a recovering supervillain who trades world domination for a family life, dominated the competition, earning $122.6 million over its first five days of release and $75 million during the three-day weekend. The movie opened on Wednesday, allowing it to fully capitalize on the Fourth of July holiday.
But “Despicable Me’s” appeal transcends borders. Internationally, the film earned $106.9 million from 73 markets, bringing its global earnings to $229.5 million. Even better, “Despicable Me 4” carries a relatively economical $100 million production budget, which should make it very profitable for the companies behind it, to say nothing of all the Minions merch they will sell. For context, films at Pixar and Disney, Illumination’s main rival, routinely cost $200 million to make.

After destroying several city blocks with a snow plow car chase, he is taken to task by his superior Friedman (Paul Reiser). At the same time, Foley’s west coast daughter Jane (Taylour Paige) is a Defense Attorney trying to get an innocent man out of jail.
