Dream Scenario director Kristoffer Borgli has found himself in, well, a dream scenario aptly enough. Hot on the heels of his wackadoodle Nic Cage starrer from last year, the Norwegian filmmaker is preparing to reteam with A24 for his next feature, The Drama — and he's got two incredible actors eyed to lead it. According to Deadline, Dune star Zendaya and The Batman's Robert Pattinson are both in early negotiations to lead the project, written by Borgli himself and set to be produced by Midsommar helmsman Ari Aster.
Per Deadline's reporting, A24 were keen to work with Borgli again after the success of the Sick Of Myself director's aforementioned, Cage-stuffed psycho-comic-drama, and even more-so once Zendaya became interested in the project. And although details on what exactly The Drama will revolve around are currently being kept shtum, word on the street is that the movie will follow a couple...

Compared to most planets in the Known Universe in Frank Herbert's "Dune" saga, the lush oceanic planet of Caladan feels like paradise. The environmental facets of this bountiful planet are often used to evoke sharp contrasts with Giedi Prime or Arrakis, as the latter feature rough terrains and near-inhospitable conditions that have shaped its inhabitants for millennia. While Giedi Prime is a bleak, hyper-industrialist dystopia, the dunes of Arrakis challenge every invader staking a claim on the planet's resources, its sacred secrets only privy to the mysterious Fremen. In stark contrast to these harsh environments, Caladan has always been associated with a flourishing economy and general prosperity, its overabundance of water emerging as a mythic dream to those who view it as a luxury instead of a necessity.

David Lynch is not very fond of his film adaptation of Frank Herbert's "Dune," feeling that it was too much a studio monster than his personal vision. After the success of "The Elephant Man" in 1980, Lynch was approached by multiple studios to handle gigantic blockbuster projects; Lynch's fans will point casual readers to an anecdote he once told about being invited by George Lucas to direct "Return of the Jedi." Learning about the franchise gave Lynch a headache, especially when he learned what a Wookiee was.
The blockbuster project Lynch accepted instead was "Dune," which he was able to make in his own preferred idiom. Even so, Lynch didn't have total creative control and felt that the whole picture was a bit of a mess. Storytelling-wise, he may be correct; a lot of information flies at the audience pretty quickly, and Frank Herbert's massively complex mythology isn't easily understood...

Well, we haven’t thought that the idea of seeing Hugh Jackman unleash the beast within as Wolverine one more time (in Deadpool 3) would morph from a pipe dream into a glorious reality. With James Mangold’s Logan in 2017, many believed it was the end of an era for this beloved character.
But the MCU pulled a rabbit out of their hats, bringing Jackman back to don his adamantium claws alongside the Merc with a Mouth in a spectacle that has sent an armada of fans into rapturous applause.

Timothée Chalamet has slowly risen his ranks in the industry and become the quintessential director’s actor. Everybody wants to work with him as the actor has an enormous talent and is keen on doing various types of genres. With Wonka and Dune: Part Two‘s success, people are already eyeing what Chalamet does next.

This year, Florence Pugh joined the ensemble cast of Dune: Part Two as Princess Irulan. It was a reunion project for her and Chalamet as they worked before in 2019’s Little Women. “Final Cut” means a director gets the last word on editing a movie. But usually, contracts and studio decisions don’t let this happen. So, many directors end up just working on projects without having any real control.
Still from Dune (1984) (Universal Pictures)
As a result, even if the final version of a movie pleases the audience, it often doesn’t fully satisfy because it may lack the depth and originality that the director’s vision would have provided. The filmmaker plays a crucial role in interpreting the script and bringing the story to life. If the their vision isn’t considered, the chances of poor reviews are high. This is exactly what happened to David Lynch when he directed Dune.

In the article series Sound and Vision we take a look at music videos from notable directors. This week: two music videos for Bundock Lanoie by Denis Villeneuve. Denis Villeneuve made a few music videos in his career, the two most notable for Bundock Lanoie. That band was an offshoot of the famous quebecois band Bündock, consisting of two core members, Pierre Bundock and Dominique Lanoie. The duo made one album together called Bundock-Lanoie, with two of the lead singles being Ne Me Dis Pas (below) and Ce'st le éte (also below). Both singles got music videos directed by Villeneuve. They feel like they come from a very different director, while a lot of his hallmarks are still there. What's most noticeable is that one...

Get ready for an onslaught of "Dune" material now that Hollywood has recognized there's quite an audience for author Frank Herbert's revered sci-fi saga. Not only do we have the upcoming Max series "Dune: Prophecy," the trailer for which reveals several sacrifices will be made, but we'll also see the return of Timothée Chalamet's Paul Atreides in a third movie from sci-fi maestro Denis Villeneuve.
After "Dune: Part Two" proved massively popular at a time when the box office wasn't exactly at its peak, you better believe Legendary Pictures decided to keep the spice flowing with a third "Dune" movie. The next installment in Villeneuve's epic saga looks likely to be an adaptation of the second novel in Herbert's original run, with Villeneuve previously revealing his eagerness to adapt "Dune Messiah." At this point, the man can basically do no wrong, having proven Herbert's supposedly "unfilmable...

Frank Herbert's "Dune" is one of the most celebrated and influential science fiction novels of all time, a dauntingly complex narrative that tackles many different themes, ideas, and tones — with the story getting weirder and weirder as time goes on.
It is a book long considered to be impossible to adapt because of how dense it is and how fantastical many of its concepts are. Despite the simplicity of the main story, the worldbuilding is detailed and layered (and no movie adaptation has fully captured this), and bringing this world to life requires extensive use of special effects. Still, as detailed as Herbert is in many of his universe's elements, particularly the ecology of Arrakis and how that entire world works, there are many important aspects that are left surprisingly vague in the books. Whether it's the ornithopter or every other spaceship having bizarre descriptions that are immediately striking...

An IMAX presentation confirms that Denis Villeneuve’s Dune 3 is to release in 2026, though there’s a potential question mark over its Dune: Messiah title…
In the same IMAX presentation that announced the potential title of Steven Spielberg’s next movie – that’d be The Dish – it was also confirmed that Denis Villeneuve will indeed have a third Dune film in cinemas by the end of 2026.
Reports have been circulating for a while that Villeneuve is making a second Dune sequel next, with Warner stating in early July that it has an ‘event film’ from the director scheduled for the 18th December 2026. Hollywood sources all suggested that the mystery film was Dune: Messiah, despite Villeneuve’s earlier suggestions that he might tackle a different project first.

Brady Corbet, the director of “The Brutalist,” is still trying to figure out the best way to deliver the print for his film to the Venice Film Festival, where it will debut next month. That’s because the epic 215-minute story of a Holocaust survivor forging a new life in America will be shown in 70mm, which means that all 26 reels of film will need to travel in four Pelican cases from Los Angeles to Italy, weighing in at approximately 300 pounds.
“We may have to buy a couple of plane tickets,” he said, shortly after Venice unveiled its lineup. “We have to figure out the best way to get it through customs in order to hand deliver it in time.”
But Corbet has been resisting the digital tide for years, having shot his two previous films, “Vox Lux” and “The Childhood of a Leader,” on celluloid. That’s become something...

When Denis Villeneuve's "Dune" was first announced, it already had a stellar cast in place. With Timothée Chalamet in the lead role of Paul Atreides, Zendaya playing Fremen warrior Chani, and Stellan Skarsgård portraying Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, the movie didn't necessarily need any more star power. But Villeneuve wasn't going to hold back. After all, he was finally giving Frank Herbert's supposedly "unfilmable" 1965 novel the big screen treatment it had long deserved, and such a momentous occasion demanded one of the finest casts assembled in recent decades.
So, as the casting news kept coming, we soon learned that none other than Oscar Isaac had joined "Dune" as Duke Leto Atreides, father to Paul and leader of House Atreides. It was a decision that made so much sense. Not only did Isaac come with some serious sci-fi bonafides following his work in 2014's "Ex Machina" and 2018's "Annihilation," he...

While it wasn’t until he hit his 30s that Dave Bautista got his big break in the realm of pro-wrestling, it didn’t take the actor too long to earn himself the status of Animal in WWE. Apart from his personality and charisma, the actor’s huge build was another major factor that contributed to him becoming a force of nature during the Ruthless Aggression Era.
But even though it’s not uncommon for pro wrestlers to maintain brute physiques, since parting ways with WWE, Bautista hasn’t shied away from shifting his weight to fit the required role. However, his recent shift in muscle has fans startled, as it’s a far cry from what fans are accustomed to seeing when it comes to the Animal.

What makes this all the more worth waiting for is that this arc wouldn’t be as minutely adapted as Villeneuve’s saga did and would explore it more widely.

Denis Villeneuve's Dune: Messiah may be some way off yet (December 2026 if reports are to be believed), but we don't have that long to wait before we return to the universe of spice and space politicking Frank Herbert built. HBO has just dropped the second teaser trailer for Dune: Prophecy (via SFFGazette.com), the upcoming small screen prequel which we believe is meant to be a standalone story unconnected to Denis Villeneuve's movies.
It's also been confirmed today that the show will premiere this November, so we're now just waiting for an exact date.
While not quite as visually stunning as those big screen adaptations, the show does have the same look and feel even if it's hard to shake the feeling it might end up being "Dune on a budget." Still, we're intrigued by what we see here and, for fans of Frank Herbert and the Sisterhood of Dune, written by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson, this story being told on screen is long-overdue.

If "House of the Dragon" season 2 isn't quite enough to scratch your itch for great noble houses, plotting, and backstabbing, then don't worry, backup is on the way! It comes in the form of "Dune: Prophecy." a prequel series set 10,000 years before the events of Frank Herbert's original novel (recently adapted into two movies by director Denis Villeneuve), which tells the origin story of the Bene Gesserit. This sisterhood of space witches uses ancestral memory and preternatural foresight to manipulate power across the galaxy through careful "breeding" of the noble houses.
The first teaser for "Dune: Prophecy" felt very much like "Game of Thrones ... in Space!" -- though that is pretty much the entire premise of the "Dune" franchise (which predates "Game of Thrones" by several decades). Alison Schapker, who has prior experience bringing elaborate sci-fi worlds to life on "Westworld" and "Altered Carbon" serves as showrunner for the series.

This post contains spoilers for "Enemy."
"It was Hegel that said that all the greatest world events happen twice, and then Karl Marx added: the first time it was a tragedy, the second time it was a farce," says history professor Adam Bell (Jake Gyllenhaal) during a lecture session when he's first introduced in "Enemy." While these words seem innocuous with respect to untangling the complex web of themes in Denis Villeneuve's 2014 film, they're actually the key to the central mystery that grips the dual protagonists. Viewing "Enemy" through a singular lens might not give us all the answers — or satisfactory ones, for that matter — so let us tackle some of the biggest questions that seem to confound viewers once the credits roll.
To offer a brief, yet superficial recap: Adam, who seems discontent with his life's numbing monotony, stumbles upon a film featuring someone who looks exactly like him.

After writing his magnum opus, "Dune," Frank Herbert penned several science-fiction books, including 1986's "Man of Two Worlds," written in collaboration with his son, Brian Herbert. Although much more contained in scope and ambition than his "Dune" saga, "Man of Two Worlds" delved into the intriguing premise of human and alien minds, and how beautiful and disastrous it would be if one body were to house these warring identities. The collaboration between the two authors birthed a fascinating if somewhat shaky foundation for a world that could have been, weaving fantasy and satire into a story that feels both dense and nostalgic. Brian's involvement in his father's work is not limited to this — he kept the "Dune" legacy going by piecing together prequels and sequels based on his father's notes, penning companion pieces such as "Legends of Dune" and "Sandworms of Dune" over the years.

The Dune franchise has become a spectacular piece of cinema with Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of the Frank Herbert novels. Starring Timothee Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Zendaya, and Florence Pugh among so many other actors, the expected trilogy is already two movies down, with one more in the works. But before Villeneuve changed people’s mind about the spice fields of Arrakis and the Empire, there were a few other tries to bring this story to life.

The most successful of them, it terms of the audience getting a full length movie, was the one made by David Lynch. The 1984 adaptation of Dune was a critical and commercial failure, becoming one of the few films in David Lynch’s career that was not accepted by the people. As film writer Max Evry once said, it was the “black sheep of David Lynch’s filmography.

With the second part of Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of Frank Herbert’s classic science fiction novel a critical and box office success, it is going to be several years before we see the next feature film in the series, Dune Messiah. Luckily, production on the small-screen prequel /spin-off was concurrent with Dune: Part Two which means before the end of the year we are going to return to the fictional realms of Arrakis, Geidi Prime, and more via Max.
While not much in the way of footage has made its way online, there have been quite a few reveals about Dune Prophecy, so let’s jump in and discuss.

A third "Dune" movie is in the works from Legendary and director Denis Villeneuve, but it may be a while until it reaches audiences: The Hollywood Reporter recently shared the news that his next film is due in theaters December 2026, and it may not even be a "Dune" sequel. Cinema fans should get excited for any new project from the filmmaker who's also brought us movies like "Blade Runner 2049" and "Arrival," but sci-fi fans understandably can't wait to see the director return to the world of Arrakis.
When Villeneuve's "Dune: Messiah" adaptation does appear, it'll follow a tricky chapter in Frank Herbert's book series. As /Film's Michael Boyle pointed out in a piece written after the third film's announcement, "Dune: Messiah" sidelines one of the franchise's most important characters, Rebecca Ferguson's now-villainous Lady Jessica. "Although Jessica was arguably the co-protagonist of the first book, she spends...

Many fans fell in love with the real-world locations of Denis Villeneuve’s Dune movies. Villeneuve was not ready to use a set inside a studio and a lot of CGI effects to create his epic. He was not a fan of CGI even during his other futuristic fantasy film, Blade Runner 2049. During the promotion of the Ryan Gosling-led film, Villeneuve shared that he didn’t want his actors to walk on green screens.

Villeneuve’s attitude towards CGI is shared by many in the industry. These filmmakers would not be so fond of the near-$30 billion empire that Marvel has built from producing one CGI movie after the other.

Emily Blunt has landed a lot of fan-favorite roles and worked with a multiplicity of filmmakers and screenwriters throughout her career, with Taylor Sheridan being one of them since the pair worked on Sicario together. In fact, her iconic role of Kate Macer in this very movie was one that the studios wanted for a male actor.

Fortunately for her, all of this ended up in her favor in more than one way. For one, Blunt managed to score the role in the $85 million movie instead of letting herself get replaced by a male actor. For another, after getting cast in the role, she perfectly laid down her one demand on how she was going to play her character in that macho world which was effectively taken care of by the director.

Denis Villeneuve's "Dune" films are bursting with jaw-dropping set pieces, incredible imagery, and staggering scale, all while focusing on intense and complex characters in a story that challenges the archetypal hero's journey that provides the structure for so many classic tales. Taking inspiration from Steven Spielberg's "Jaws," Villeneuve's first entry in this franchise heavily teased the gigantic sandworms that live under the sand dunes of the planet Arrakis, rarely showing them in full and only giving us a glimpse at one character riding one as other characters look on from afar.
Naturally, one might come to the conclusion that Timothée Chalamet, who plays the main character of these films, Paul Atreides, would be fired up to hop on the back of the Shai-Hulud and ride the worm himself in "Dune: Part Two." But despite how amazing that scene ended up being (and the meticulous preparation that went into...

If you think of modern sci-fi gems, which movies do you recall? Maybe it’s Denis Villenueve’s Dune franchise, or Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar, or you’re a fan of Blade Runner 2049 with our favorite Ryan Gosling, and all these movies are truly perfect.
However, they all can be beaten by the 2016 movie that is not at such a hearing, but still offers an impeccable sci-fi story that somewhat breaks the genre’s canons.
Its plot revolves around Louise, a linguistics professor whose calm life is interrupted by an alien invasion. The point is twelve extraterrestrial crafts land all around the world, and their motives remain unknown, until Louise is recruited to study them.
She teams up with a team of experts to find a way to communicate with the uninvited guests, and the more she learns about aliens, the more she learns about her own life.

Like the prophetic Bene Gesserit, director Denis Villeneuve always seems to have his mind partly in the future. When it comes to casting his "Dune" films, based on the novels by Frank Herbert, he's managed to hire some of the biggest stars in the world to play bit parts all by pointing to what comes next. While many actors would jump at the chance to work with Villeneuve or be in that kind of star-studded production, there's also a lot involved and smaller roles might not feel as rewarding for huge, busy stars. So how did he manage to get Florence Pugh to play Princess Irulan in "Dune: Part Two"? By promising her some great things for her future playing the character, all pointing to a third film based on "Dune Messiah."

Francine Maisler, longtime collaborator with Aaron Sorkin and Steven Soderbergh and casting director for “The Revenant,” “The Big Short,” “Little Women,” “Dune” and “The Bikeriders,” says she’s always been obsessed with performance.
“I’m always looking and seeing and my eye is taken with things,” she says.
“I love the theater,” she told an audience at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival this week, recalling being “mesmerized” by actors onstage long before she had the inkling to follow her career path.
Sorkin has said, “Francine has an eye for talent like no one I’ve ever met,” to which Maisler jokes, “We fight all the time.”
The longtime New Yorker started her career working for the Actors Equity union before moving into casting and professes she’s neither competitive nor did she ever dream of going bigtime. But after a few films in which “I just kind of kept...

Directed by Denis Villeneuve, 2015’s Sicario is one of the best action-thriller movies of all time. The film’s screenplay was penned by Taylor Sheridan, and it stars Emily Blunt as Kate Mercer, an FBI special agent on a mission to take down a Mexican drug cartel leader.

Let the speculation begin. The Untitled Event Film Warner Bros had dated for December 2026 now is being billed as a Denis Villeneuve Event Film, and sources said the studio and Legendary are holding the date with expectations that he wraps up the spectacular trilogy with Dune 3. Hurdles still have to be cleared as they’re still working on script and locking cast, but it is the project Villenueve has been working on. According to Villeneuve, the depth of Dune lies in how it tells a story about humanity through a future society alien in many respects. The studio and...

Alien and Blade Runner both spawned sequels, but filmamker Sir Ridley Scott wasn't behind the camera for them. James Cameron helmed the now-classic Aliens, with David Fincher later taking charge of the poorly-received, yet still fondly remembered, Alien 3.
As for Blade Runner, Dune director Denis Villeneuve took charge of Blade Runner 2049, a movie that proved to be a worthy follow-up to Scott's groundbreaking 1982 original.
Talking to Vanity Fair (via SFFGazette.com) about Gladiator II, Scott confirmed he was never asked to direct sequels to either movie or told about their development while it was happening. He blames that on being a relatively new filmmaker and having little interest in making follow-ups at the time.
"I was slow out the starting gate," Scott admits. "I mean, I should have done the sequels to 'Alien' and to 'Blade Runner.' You change over the years. At that time,...

Edward Berger, director of the Oscar-nominated All Quiet On The Western Front, is the latest filmmaker rumoured to be in contention to make the next James Bond film.
Among the various well-known directors whose names have been attached to the James Bond franchise in recent months, we can now add another: Edward Berger. He’s a European filmmaker who broke into wider consciousness with 2022’s All Quiet On The Western Front, the most recent adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque’s novel about the futility of World War I.
Made for Netflix, Berger’s war film was a success with audiences and with judges at big, glamorous award shows – it received no fewer than 14 BAFTA nominations (and won seven) and nine Oscars.

Ridley Scott said in an interview with Vanity Fair that he was never asked to direct the sequels to “Alien” and “Blade Runner,” nor was he even told about their development at the time. Scott reasons that his status as an emerging filmmaker is why he got the boot, not that he was personally interested in directing sequels so early in his career.
“I was slow out the starting gate,” Scott said. “I mean, I should have done the sequels to ‘Alien’ and to ‘Blade Runner.’ You change over the years. At that time, I didn’t want to go through it again. So Jim Cameron came in—and then David Fincher—on ‘Alien.’”

Ridley Scott was once attached to direct Blade Runner 2049, but when the time finally came to shoot the sequel, Scott dropped out to focus on Alien: Covenant and Denis Villeneuve was picked to replace him. Looking back, Scott told Vanity Fair that it’s a choice he still regrets.
“I was regretful,” Scott said. “Although [Denis Villeneuve] did a good job.” Although Blade Runner 2049 was praised by critics, it did bomb at the box office, dooming any potential sequel. However, the franchise will soon be revived with Blade Runner 2099, a TV series for Prime Video which Scott is executive producing.
For his part, Villeneuve has said that he has no desire to make a sequel to another director’s work again. “So 2049 was really a love letter to the first film, but it was by far one of the most difficult projects I’ve ever done, and I don...

Warner Bros has announced that Denis Villeneuve’s next film will release in December 2026. There’s speculation that the director could be making Dune: Messiah next after all…
Not so long ago, director Denis Villeneuve had said that he wanted to take a break from the sands of Arrakis before he made his trilogy-closing sequel to Dune: Part Two.
Over the weekend, however, there has been growing speculation that Villeneuve may make Dune: Messiah next after all.
On the 26th June, Warner Bros announced a couple of films on its upcoming slate, neither of which are titled. One is an ‘event film’ directed by Villeneuve and scheduled for the 18th December 2026. The other, per The Hollywood Reporter, is another film in the MonsterVerse franchise, following this year’s Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire; that one’s due out on the 26th March 2027.

In a move that has electrified the sci-fi community, Warner Bros. has announced a December 18, 2026 release date for what is widely believed to be “Dune 3,” the highly anticipated conclusion to Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of Frank Herbert’s iconic novel series. This announcement comes on the heels of “Dune: Part Two’s” resounding success at the global box office.
Villeneuve, a three-time Oscar nominee, has been deeply immersed in the world of Arrakis since his 2021 adaptation of “Dune.” The sequel, released in 2024, has further cemented the franchise’s popularity, grossing approximately $711.8 million worldwide and earning critical acclaim with a 92% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes.
While Warner Bros. has not officially confirmed that the 2026 slot is for “Dune 3,” industry insiders suggest that the studio is eager to capitalize on the franchise’s momentum. The third installment is expected to adapt “Dune Messiah,” Herbert’s 1969 sequel, and bring closure to Villeneuve’s epic narrative.

Before Pixar's "Inside Out 2" conquered the global box office, "Dune: Part Two" was the only light amid a truly dismal 2024 for movies. "Part Two" crossed multiple box office milestones on its way to making more than $700 million globally, and that's to say nothing of digital sales. That's impressive not just because almost every other film released in 2024 has struggled to even break the century mark, but because "Part Two" followed 2021's "Dune," which was given a day-and-date release on Max (formerly HBO Max). As such, there was no guarantee the masses would turn out to see "Part Two" after having been given the opportunity to stream the original film from the comfort of their own homes. But turn out they did, ensuring Denis Villeneuve maintained his standing as a premiere director who can reliably churn out sci-fi blockbusters that succeed both critically and commercially. It also guaranteed that...
