Movies offer an excellent excuse to ruminate on your deepest fears, and they’re certainly cheaper than therapy. So if you’re struggling with some deep mommy issues, why not cue up a matriarchal tale of terror and sort through some of that trauma in style?
Auteurs have been hashing out their issues with their mothers on the big screen for decades, to varying degrees of success. Consider mother-centric horror as its own subgenre, and you’ll notice there’s a tendency among filmmakers to take more than one stab at the thorny subject matter. Alfred Hitchcock used the real crimes of serial killer Ed Gein and added a profoundly morbid murder of a mother at a motel to brilliantly realize Norma and Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins) for his exquisite “Psycho” in 1960, of course. But he’d whipped up something just as insidiously spectacular with Leopoldine Konstantin for his...

Happy birthday to you! Happy birthday to you! Happy birthday, dear reeeeaaaderrrrr. Put this on your queue! Whether you’re a party animal fervently celebrating another spin around the sun — or an introvert quietly enjoying some well-earned Me Time — the day you were born should be wholly and unequivocally about you and what you want.
Just ask the Princess Aurora: a babbling baby girl-turned-titular “Sleeping Beauty” whose 1st and 16th birthdays were notoriously ruined by a woodland fairy with self-esteem issues. Or consider the plight of Tree: a screamingly funny (albeit slightly self-obsessed) sorority girl whose birthday warps into a time-loop slasher flick in the Blumhouse-produced “Happy Death Day.”

The modern horror film is missing a key ingredient that you seemed to always have in decades past—creepiness. Instead of taking your time and allowing dread and terror to hang around you, creeping inside of your brain, modern horror films rely so heavily on jump scares. Sure, that scares you in the moment, but it doesn’t lead to a truly horrifying experience. That’s where a film like Osgood Perkins’ frightening, wild, and endlessly dark “Longlegs” comes in.

A lot of family moments happen around a couch. The couch is a great place for families to connect and discuss life’s ups and downs. But in Niclas Larsson’s new, beautifully crafted family drama, “Mother, Couch,” the sofa at the center of the film isn’t in the family home. It’s in a closed furniture store. Yes, that deserves an explanation.
“Mother, Couch” follows the story of David (Ewan McGregor), a man struggling in a variety of different ways.

For a moment, imagine the following. Lacking the ability to speak, verbalize thoughts, and communicate with others. Imagine, then, a means to overcome such a barrier through a device, not unlike a traditional computer, with additional help provided by a highly trained assistant meant to guide somehow the words that are trying to be said. Perhaps, occasionally, your message isn’t always clear or doesn’t reflect what said assistant believes might be your intended words. It shouldn’t be difficult to envision such wrongdoings taking place in what is indeed a well-documented real-life procedure, with the Netflix documentary “Tell Them You Love Me” taking things countless steps further by showcasing such a partnership between a disabled man and his communicator, how things spiraled out of control, and the fallout as a result.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of Disney’s “The Lion King” (currently in theaters for a limited run), which coincides with the release of Barry Jenkins’ prequel, “Mufasa: The Lion King” (December 20). The 2D blockbuster and pop culture phenomenon (directed by Roger Allers and Rob Minkoff) was an early digital pioneer. This was vital in introducing a live-action aesthetic with dynamic camera movement and dramatic lighting to its “Circle of Life” adventure story, starring Simba and company, set in the African Pride Lands.
This propelled Jon Favreau’s photorealistic remake in 2019, driven by an innovative virtual production workflow and a Nat Geo-like doc aesthetic. Although it was marketed as “live action” and not submitted for animated Oscar consideration, this was clearly keyframe-animated by Mpc, which nonetheless earned a VFX Oscar nomination (production supervised by Rob Legato).

Most people are starting to exhale now that it looks like the Paramount-Skydance sale saga is finally behind us. Those who aren’t know there’s a slim chance as part of a 45-day “go shop” window where someone else can make a bid and Shari Redstone can still change her mind and ruin everyone’s summer.
But even if Edgar Bronfman Jr. or the “Baby Geniuses” producer do come out of the woodwork, Hollywood still dodged a serious bullet: industry consolidation.
Deadline late Thursday reported that Sony and Apollo will not be a rival party making a counter offer during the go shop window. Their offer of $26 billion for the bulk of Paramount was the only other formal offer on the table. Now that’s off the table, and everyone should be able to breathe a little easy.
Under Skydance’s merger, things are no doubt going to change.

The 2024 Taormina Film Festival is set to open on Saturday night with the premiere of Mitzi Peirone’s new thriller “Saint Clare,” which stars Bella Thorne as a young woman who acts on the advice of voices in her head to commit a series of murders. But the highly anticipated screening won’t be Thorne’s only presence at the Taormina.
The actress and singer, who previously directed the short film “Paint Her Red” along with many of her music videos, is bringing her latest short “Unsettled” to the festival. Ahead of its international premiere at Taormina (the film previously screened at Palm Springs ShortsFest), IndieWire can exclusively reveal the trailer for “Unsettled.”
Per a press release, “Unsettled” tells the “true story of a young man drugged and abducted from a gay club who escapes and seeks to bring his tormentors to justice in a deeply conservative Bible Belt Oklahoma.

On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.
Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.
The Pitch: A Meddlesome Producer’s Bloodiest, Briniest Catch of the Day
As titillating as it is atrocious, “Humanoids from the Deep” has everything. Sandy boobs. Practical gore. A woman director undermined by Roger Corman. Garnish with those dead dog scenes, and what more could you ask of a creature feature from the summer of 1980?
Starring Doug McClure as a hero fisherman, Ann Turkel as an inquisitive biologist, and Vic Morrow in a shifty special performance, this sluggish monster invasion imagines a community ravaged by sea creatures (Aka clumsy actors in suits...

Due to the pandemic and the writer’s strike, the TCA Awards could not have an in-person ceremony for the past four years. That changed this evening when the collective membership met in Pasadena to honor the best in television over the past 12 months. The big winner of the night? FX’s critical and streaming hit, “Shōgun.“

The Television Critics Association (TCA) has unveiled the winners for its 2024 awards ceremony.
The 40th annual TCA Awards honored outstanding programming from the 2023-2024 TV season, with “Shōgun” taking home a league-leading four wins including the top prize, the Program of the Year Award. The FX on Hulu series was recently renewed for Seasons 2 and 3.
The winners were selected by the TCA’s membership of more than 230 professional television journalists from across the United States and Canada. Fan-favorite shows “Hacks,” “Baby Reindeer,” and “Doctor Who” also won numerous awards, as did docuseries “Quiet On Set: The Dark Side Of Kids” and reality show “The Traitors.”
“It was a year of brilliant television, from an epic historical drama to a harrowing documentary,” Jacqueline Cutler, TCA president, said. “We’re thrilled to honor all who created these shows, often against great odds, as many were worked on during the pandemic and stopped for the strikes.

Nicolas Cage is applauding Cate Blanchett’s dedication to the art of acting.
Cage told The New Yorker that Blanchett is among the few stars who truly embodies the “Golden Age vanguard style of film performance” — the style that Cage holds in the highest regard.
“I think that there have been remarkable performances,” Cage said of modern film acting. “I don’t know if it’s new, per se, or a kind of recycling or return to an older style where people are less afraid to express themselves in a larger format. They’re breaking free from ‘If it’s quiet and minimal, it’s great.’ They can liberate themselves and use their voices and gesture and go bigger.”
He continued, “I’ve seen it in different actors — for me, Cate Blanchett certainly reminds me of the Golden Age vanguard style of film performance as well.”

Summer: a time for the outdoors, a time to travel, a time to reconnect with friends and make new ones, a time for fun and adventure, and a time to broaden your horizons. And if your idea of “broadening your horizons” is to spend three months getting into anime — well, who are we to stop you?
Appropriate for the season of big blockbusters, the Summer Anime season this year is all about the franchises — including ones that even newcomers to the medium will likely recognize. There’s an anime adaptation of comic series “Suicide Squad,” which is only halfway done but is certainly far better than the 2016 movie. With “Rick and Morty” on hiatus for a year, fans of the Adult Swim staple can entertain themselves with an anime version of the dynamic duo. It’s amusing, in hindsight, to look back at Nicolas Cage’s first lead role. After a small role in “Fast Times at Ridgemont High,” the scion of the Coppola dynasty headlined 1983’s “Valley Girl,” playing the teen heartthrob that swoops Deborah Foreman’s LA blonde off her feet. Sure, Cage was playing a punk instead of a football player, but it was altogether a rather conventional stock character, the kind that populates many teen films that came before (“Grease”) and after (“The Breakfast Club”).
As soon as he moved on from teen rom-com parts (see also: “Peggy Sue Got Married”), Cage largely has taken roles that have been anything but ordinary. The intense star specializes in playing men on the edge of madness, who feel deeply and express those emotions loudly.

What to do about generative AI has plagued every Hollywood labor union for more than a year now. IATSE’s solution just might be the best yet.
For the international Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, generative AI will be covered union work performed by a human and no crew member can be forced to input a prompt that would replace another crew member. Additionally, the tentative agreement calls for studios to commit to AI training and to protections against potential lawsuits over an IATSE worker’s use of AI.
The full Memorandum of Agreement was released to IATSE members on Wednesday afternoon. It wasn’t hard to get. As an attorney told IndieWire, IATSE’s deal is perhaps more detailed and comprehensive than the others — and it is a “really great result” for both employees and employers.

In a remarkable twist two full days into Alec Baldwin’s “Rust” trial for involuntary manslaughter, the judge has dismissed the case against Baldwin after the defense alleged that the prosecution withheld new evidence from them.
The judge said the late discovery of the evidence in the trial impacted the fundamental ability for the defense to argue the case and the overall fairness of the proceedings about the death of Halyna Hutchins. The judge also claimed prosecution knew about the evidence and chose to not disclose it to the defense.
“There is no way for the court to right this wrong,” Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer said in court on Friday. Baldwin could be seen teary eyed as the judge made her decision, his head in his hands and hugging his attorney.

As the psychically inclined FBI agent Lee Harker (Maika Monroe) realizes, Longlegs has for decades been working in cahoots with her mother, a fearfully religious basket case who does the door-to-door duty of posing as a nun to deliver the dolls that compel...

A very happy “Shark Week” to all who celebrate! It’s wild that this marquee Discovery summer event seems to increase in size every year, spawning a massive 21 separate programs for its 2024 slate — which is, naturally, hosted by John Cena. This got the IndieWire Craft team thinking about how documentarians capture footage of nature’s most infamous cartilaginous fish, so we reached out to some “Shark Week” cinematographers with the same questions we ask both documentary and scripted DPs about how they craft the look of their projects.
You likely won’t be surprised to learn that the logistical constraints of getting up close to sharks are numerous and inform what these DPs arm themselves with, camera-wise. Andy Casagrande, who shot this year’s “Air Jaws,” stressed the unpredictable nature of the animal subjects as being core to a lot of decision-making. Particularly with respect to Great Whites, Casagrande told...

Well, it’s official (and more than a little suprising): “Euphoria” will be back for Season 3. Variety reports that the hit HBO series will start shooting in January 2023, with all of its principal cast returning. That’s great news for the show’s fans, but it should leave most people scratching their heads. After all, production on Season 3 will start three years after Season 2’s premiere. Hasn’t the “Euphoria” zeitgeist already faded, and didn’t the myriad delays from last year’s guild strikes and Sam Levinson‘s wonky scripts expedite that process?

Talk about corporate synergy: A membership to Hallmark Media’s new streaming-video service, Hallmark+ (another plus!), will come with free greeting cards.
The replacement to Hallmark Movies Now will have a higher price tag for its mid-September launch — $7.99 per month vs. $5.99 — but it will also have more content and more perks. Hallmark+ will have hundreds of Hallmark holiday films, but also reality shows and docuseries, the company announced Thursday at the Television Critics Association (TCA) press tour.
“We’re always looking for new ways to expand our content and grow our audiences while staying true to the Hallmark brand that people know and love,” said Lisa Hamilton Daly, the EVP of programming for Hallmark Media. “Our unscripted slate is inspiring, heartwarming, and entertaining, with a fresh authenticity so true to Hallmark’s DNA.”

With the “Presumed Innocent” finale set to stream on July 24, Apple is letting fans know that there’s more to look forward to.
David E. Kelley’s limited series, itself an adaptation of Scott Turow’s novel of the same name that also inspired the 1990 film, has been renewed for a second season on Apple TV+. Kelley, Turow, J.J. Abrams, Dustin Thomason, and Jake Gyllenhaal are all set to return as executive producers. However, Season 2 will be centered around an entirely new case, so it’s unclear if Gyllenhaal or co-stars Ruth Negga, Bill Camp, or Peter Sarsgaard will return in an on-screen capacity.
The eight episode first season sees Gyllenhaal step into the role of Rusty Sabich (first played by Harrison Ford in Alan J. Pakula’s film), a prosecutor who becomes a prime suspect in his co-worker’s murder after their affair becomes public knowledge. While the show...

The adult animation boom seen over the last few decades has produced some of modern television’s most exciting series. “BoJack Horseman,” “Archer,” “Primal,” “Rick and Morty,“ “Tuca & Bertie,” “Blue Eye Samurai,” and even “X-Men ’97” (just to name a few) all used their limitless medium to push serialized storytelling in new directions. But peak TV also created a slew of exhausting, unimaginative copycats — cheap knockoffs of popular and/or innovative shows that operated under the principle that all they had to do to get laughs was make cartoon characters curse about pop culture. Blame “South Park” for amplifying the shock value of “Kids Say the Darnedest Things” or “Family Guy” for tricking a generation of teens into thinking random movie references were the pinnacle of comedy writing. Either way, you end up here, with a bunch of aimless animated programs served up to subscribers whenever they finish bingeing “American Dad.

Emerald Fennell just announced her third feature film, and this time, it’ll be an adapted screenplay.
Fennell is set to direct the latest adaptation of Emily Brontë’s beloved “Wuthering Heights” novel. Fennell tweeted a logo for the feature, along with the tagline, “Be with me always. Take any form. Drive me mad.”
IndieWire reached out to Fennell’s representatives for confirmation.
The Oscar winner made her feature directorial debut with “Promising Young Woman” and released “Saltburn” in 2023. Fennell deemed “Saltburn” a “fully Gothic” twisted love story, and now, “Wuthering Heights” will lean into both of those genres. The feature will also reunite Fennell with MRC on the production side, which she collaborated with for “Saltburn.”
“Wuthering Heights” centers on the tortured romance between Cathy and Heathcliff that is rife with revenge.
Fennell previously told Vanity Fair that her filmmaking passion is telling stories of darker desires.

Prime Video’s superhero satire “The Boys” is in its fourth season and preparing for a fifth and final season. But unlike some shows that go on for too long and overstay their welcome, “The Boys” is getting better and better, and our recent review described it as “confident” and its strongest season yet. With season four airing week to week, its eighth and final episode premiering on July 18, next week, the cast and one of its primary leads, Anthony Starr, have been hitting the pavement hard to promote the show.

On October 21, 2021, cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was killed when a live round discharged from a prop gun on the set of the indie Western film “Rust.” The man holding the gun: Alec Baldwin.
For the last three years, the ins and outs of what went wrong on that day have consumed Hollywood. Few, though, imagined it might get this far, with Alec Baldwin set to stand trial in New Mexico on a charge of involuntary manslaughter that could land him in prison.
Jury selection began Tuesday, July 9, with Baldwin already in attendance in court following a pre-trial hearing on Monday that even handed Baldwin’s legal team an early victory (more on that later).
We’ll be updating this space with some of the most notable updates from the trial, which will be streaming live starting tomorrow via CourtTV and Law & Crime Network on YouTube.

Protestors for PETA disrupted Thursday night’s premiere of “Twisters” in Los Angeles, calling out a “distressing scene” in the film as an “inhumane” glorification of rodeos and for the use of live animals in the film.
The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) organization protested the LA premiere of the film at the Regency Village Theatre over the “distressing scenes” involving rodeo animals. Protestors wearing cow masks and carrying signs reading “Calves’ Necks Are Twisted at Rodeos” and “The Rodeo Hurts and Kills Animals” were positioned outside the theater.

Ms. 45.Zoë Lund produced a small body of work, died young, and became a saint. Her intensity, beauty, and premature death at 37 have given her a Rimbaudian aura, inspiring tragic adoration. In this she is not unique. But while beauty and tragedy may provide the materials for enduring fame, for Lund, at least, the resulting hagiography risks obscuring the work of a singular mind. The films, documents, and writing she left behind reveal a figure who was at once a dedicated artist and a political militant, a creator of indelible artworks who seldom saw her projects realized. In the years between her screen debut in 1981 and her death in 1999, Lund (née Tamerlis) contributed essential pieces to two widely recognized cinematic classics: her lead performance in Ms .45 (1981) and at least part of the script for Bad Lieutenant (1992), both directed by Abel Ferrara.1 Although her films with Ferrara remain her finest,...

We say it every year, but that’s only because it’s true every year: The New York Asian Film Festival is the most fun you could have at the movies this summer. And that’s especially true this summer, as the festival — which proudly brings American crowds into “the trenches” of Asian cinema — is expanding its mission statement with a blockbuster slate that incudes an ass-kicking Don Lee sequel (“The Roundup: Punishment”), the world premiere of a new “Baby Assassins” movie, a Louis Koo/Sammo Hung crime epic fresh from Cannes (“Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In”), and more can’t-miss spectacles that demand major international attention.
But Nyaff isn’t just growing bigger and wider; it’s growing deeper as well. The festival’s 2024 edition offers one of the richest and most inclusive slates that Nyaff has ever assembled (no mean feat), with programming that ranges from hard-hitting Taiwanese social dramas,...

Leslye Headland has a plan.
Much like how she drew on her love of the “Star Wars” Expanded Universe in setting up her reveal of who the Sith Lord is on “The Acolyte,” the showrunner of the Disney+ series says she knows exactly how the events of her show connect with Darth Plagueis and Palpatine (a.k.a. Darth Sidious), the Sith Lords who will be active decades later.
In an interview published July 10, Nerdist asked Headland, “I’ve been waiting many years for Darth Plagueis to show up. Do you know how the whole story of the galaxy far, far away, from ‘The Acolyte’ to him training Palpatine, connects?”
Headland said, “Yes, I do. If I continue to get to tell this story, I know how I would like that to play out. And I would say I think it’s pretty complicated and messy.”
Well now.

One Shot invites close readings of the basic unit of film grammar.Thief.In a now-iconic scene from Michael Mann's Thief (1981), Frank (James Caan) and Jessie (Tuesday Weld) drink coffee at an all-night diner. He’s dragged her here after letting her languish alone at a local dive where they were meant to rendezvous. They settle into opposite sides of the booth: she’s hunched forward, he’s arched back. Cups and saucers lay before them; bubbles of neon decorate the dark beyond the window. The shot is symmetrical, succinct, and exceptionally Mannian. The immutable diner and its pervasive simplicity come to encapsulate the auteur’s vision and true concerns. Frank is the first in a line of Mann archetypes: solitary bruisers and consummate professionals in their chosen fields leading lives stripped down to their barest essentials. It stands to reason that people in pursuit of a less effortful existence...

“Babylon” breakout star Diego Calva is returning to his film roots for Mexican feature “City of Dreams.”
The drama, which is inspired by true events, follows young boy Jesús, whose dreams of becoming a soccer star are shattered when he’s trafficked across the border and sold to a sweatshop making fast fashion in downtown Los Angeles.
The official synopsis reads: “Thrust into a world of exploitation and despair, he’s forced to adhere to the grueling work schedule dictated by El Jefe, a boss who promises freedom for those who complete their quotas. Despite Jesus’s hellish existence, he finds solace in Elena, a girl who was similarly betrayed and sold into slavery. Is Danny Ramirez poised for a breakout? The “Top Gun: Maverick” actor is everywhere these days, including “Black Mirror” Season 6, Sundance darling “Winner,” and the upcoming queer romance “From Chestnut.” And that list doesn’t include upcoming roles in “Captain America: Brave New World” and “The Last Of Us” Season 2 either.

A frank and stylishly made tale of coming of age and sexual frenzy in New Mexico, “National Anthem” commands your attention well before its centerpiece scene: Charlie Plummer, in a red sequined dress and grungy platinum-blond wig seemingly torn from the lookbook of mid-‘90s Courtney Love, performing drag to Alannah Myles’ whiskey-soaked power ballad “Black Velvet.”
The actor, a fair-haired 25-year-old so reedy he’s liable to get swept up with the tumbleweeds billowing across the desert, fulfills the promise of his breakout performance as another sort of cowboy in Andrew Haigh’s “Lean on Pete.” Dylan’s (Plummer) drag turn in this powerhouse moment is such a total 180 from the repressed construction worker we see in the opening moments, shouldering the burdens of caring for his little brother and sauced single mom. That’s because his American dream and sexual identity have been totally shattered by a spirited community of queer rodeo performers.

After fifteen years, and a brief dabble with blockbuster filmmaking (2013’s “Oz The Great And Powerful“; 2022’s “Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness“), Sam Raimi returns to horror. Deadline reports that the legendary genre filmmaker will helm the horror thriller “Send Help” over at 20th Century Studios. It’s Raimi’s first genre film since 2009’s “Drag Me To Hell,” a fan-favorite (and arguably the last true “Raimi” film he’s made).

It wasn’t long ago that IndieWire predicted Saoirse Ronan could be headed for yet another Best Actress Oscar nomination for her stellar work in the Sundance darling “The Outrun.” But that was only if the movie, which we said was one of the buzziest sales titles out of the festival, actually found a buyer.
Now Ronan will be in the thick of it as Sony Pictures Classics and Stage 6 Films have teamed up to release “The Outrun” in North American theaters on October 4 later this year.
Nora Fingscheidt (“System Crasher”) directed “The Outrun,” which first premiered to strong reviews at Sundance and has already toured other festivals such as Berlin and Biarritz Nouvelles Vagues Festival, where Ronan won the top acting prize.

The transformative relationships of a trio of women is captured by a writer in the latest Starz novel series adaptation.
“Three Women,” based on Lisa Taddeo’s bestselling book of the same name, debuts on the network with a star-studded cast. Shailene Woodley plays writer Gia, who is grieving the death of her family and sets out to interview three “ordinary” women to tell her their stories of love, life, and loss. DeWanda Wise, Betty Gilpin, and Gabrielle Creevy play the interviewees.
The official “Three Women” synopsis reads: Three women are on a crash course to radically overturn their lives. Lina (Gilpin), a homemaker in suburban Indiana, is a decade into a passionless marriage when she embarks on an affair that quickly becomes all-consuming and transforms her life. Sloane (Wise), a glamorous entrepreneur in the Northeast, has a committed open marriage with Richard (Blair Underwood), until two sexy new strangers threaten their aspirational love story.

Anthony Mackie is wearing his new title of Captain America well.
The actor returns to the MCU for “Captain America: Brave New World,” which takes place after the events of Disney+ series “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.” The Falcon, played by Mackie in previous MCU films, officially took on the mantle of Captain America in the finale of the series in 2021.
The official synopsis for “Brave New World” reads: After meeting with newly elected U.S. President Thaddeus Ross (Harrison Ford), Sam (Mackie) finds himself in the middle of an international incident. He must discover the reason behind a nefarious global plot before the true mastermind has the entire world seeing red.
Danny Ramirez, Shira Haas, Xosha Roquemore, and Carl Lumbly also star, along with Giancarlo Esposito, Liv Tyler, and Tim Blake Nelson.

Nearly six years after Captain Steve Rodgers handed Sam Wilson, Aka The Falcon, the shield in “Avengers: Endgame”, Wilson (Anthony Mackie) will finally appear in his first solo movie, “Captain America: Brave New World.” Not due in theaters until early 2025, with “Deadpool & Wolverine” in theaters soon, Marvel is not missing a beat, releasing the trailer now, which means it’ll undoubtedly played nationwide in movie theaters before the Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds-led film.

It may seem as though it’s been an endless Emmy Award season, but that’s not the case. The strike-delayed 2023 ceremony arrived in January, instead of its traditional September date, and less than two months later campaigning for the 2024 season was already starting up. And, at the time, it seemed like this class of nominees might be something of a potential embarrassment for the Television Academy. How things have changed.

Few stock characters in contemporary film and literary discourse come with more baked-in connotations than the white missionary who sails to a remote island with the hopes of convincing its Indigenous people to abandon their own religions. Years of colonization and violence have understandably prompted many to view missionary work as ill-advised at best and fundamentally evil at worst. So when Thomas Munro (Guy Pearce) lands on the shores of 19th century New Zealand to preach to the native Māori tribes, it’s a given that viewers will approach him with their own baggage and preconceived notions. “The Convert” director Lee Tamahori certainly knows that, and revels in gradually subverting expectations about his protagonist as he asks larger questions about humanity’s ability to transcend violence and prejudice.
Unlike many religious zealots who find themselves whisked off to far away lands by their faith, Thomas isn’t quite convinced that...

From the moment she appeared on screen, Shelley Duvall had an inherent, if unconventional, star quality. Recruited by Robert Altman to play a supporting role in his bizarro “M*A*S*H” follow-up “Brewster McCloud,” Duvall had no formal acting training or experience the first time she walked onto a movie set; she was a student at a junior college studying nutrition and diet therapy, who had never even left the state of Texas. But with her effortlessly charming performance in the film, she proved herself a natural.
What made Duvall such a brilliant actor? Part of it is her distinctive appearance: she was beautiful, but not generically so, with high cheekbones and large, expressive eyes that made her face a canvas to project emotions onto, be it terror or longing or despair. She had a knack for playing into the eccentricities and oddities of her characters, adding an offbeat...

“Thelma” (Magnolia), an unlikely action-comedy starring June Squibb as a nonagenarian grandmother who becomes a phone scam victim, has grossed about $7.3 million through its third week. Though not a blockbuster by summer standards, in the specialized world, and particularly outside awards season, “Thelma” is a blockbuster, headed for between $9-10 million domestic, theatrically. And at a time of challenge for this sector. How it got there suggests some lessons for distributors.
Something clicked here. “Thelma” debuted last January at Sundance with immediate acquisition interest, selling to Magnolia, which isn’t normally known for mid-wide-level releases.
By all indications, the plan has worked. “Thelma” is already Magnolia’s highest-grossing narrative feature in the company’s 23-year history. Adjusted, “Woman Thou Art Loosed” and “The World’s Fastest Indian” ended up slightly bigger, but both were around 20 years ago.
