Before she was making a new generation laugh as melodramatic "Schitt's Creek" starlet Moira Rose or leaving audiences in stitches as Christopher Guest's go-to zany muse for his mockumentaries, comedic actor Catherine O'Hara almost had a key part in a golden age episode of "The Simpsons."
In the show's third season, the provocatively titled episode "Flaming Moe's" gave bartender Moe Szyslak (Hank Azaria) a rare win when a drink idea he stole from Homer took the local scene by storm. The drink in question, a Flaming Moe, was originally made up of all the leftover bits of alcohol in the Simpson liquor cabinet, with an added dose of child's cough syrup and a fiery garnish –- thanks to Selma and Patty's cigarette cinders. That's right: Homer Simpson got Springfield hooked on lean in 1991.
Part of the episode's charm comes from the "Cheers" parody that makes up a surprising amount of its runtime.

Bob Tischler, the writer and producer known for his work on Saturday Night Live, has died. He was 78.
The former SNL head writer, who is largely credited with helping revive the NBC sketch comedy show after its infamously panned 1980-81 season, died on July 13 at his home in Bodega Bay, California.
His son Zeke told The New York Times that the cause of death was pancreatic cancer.
Born June 12, 1946 in Englewood, New Jersey, Tischler attended Ithaca and Franconia Colleges in the 1960s before working as a sound engineer in radio and television.
After working together on a radio ad, Christopher Guest recommended him to National Lampoon, for which he produced the albums Radio Dinner (1972), Gold Turkey (1975) and That’s Not Funny, That’s Sick (1977), as well as The National Lampoon Radio Hour in 1973.
Saturday Night Live Producer Dick Ebersol, writers Bob Tischler and Michael O’Donoghue and improvisation expert Del Close.

And on a Thursday night in Los Angeles at Variety’s Power of Young Hollywood party, the actor reflected on stepping into the role of “Saturday Night Live” creator Lorne Michaels for Jason Reitman’s upcoming movie “Saturday Night,” about the first broadcast of the NBC comedy show.

One secret benefit to anchoring Weekend Update on Saturday Night Live? Even though fans might not think of you as the star of the show, you’re probably going to log more screen time than any other cast member. Right, Colin Jost?
Gary Dell’Abate gets it. “The thing that you always had when you were on the show that everyone didn’t have — you knew you were going to be on every week because of Weekend Update,” the Howard Stern producer told Kevin Nealon this week. “And everybody didn’t know they were going to be on every week.”
Didn’t that make Nealon’s cast mates jealous? The atmosphere on Saturday Night Live can be cutthroat, Nealon admitted, but the competition is often hidden. “Nobody's coming right out where it’s obvious that they’re competitive and they’re doing things to try to undermine you.”

The first thing director Jason Reitman wants people to know about Saturday Night is that it may be about funny people—writers and performers who unquestionably redefined comedy—but it’s not intended to be a laugh riot. The story begins at 30 Rockefeller Center at 10 p.m. on October 11, 1975, culminating with the first-ever broadcast of Saturday Night Live. What unfolds is a ticking-clock suspense thriller-comedy—a rare genre. According to Reitman, I always describe this movie as...

"Deadpool & Wolverine" not only features a bunch of Deadpool variants making up the infamous Deadpool Corps. from Marvel Comics, it also reveals a bunch of Wolverine variants from across the multiverse. One of them is comically short, both in accuracy when compared to the comics and visually hilarious, while another has been given quite the grandiose crucifixion on a massive X in the middle of a pile of blood-red skulls. But one of them is a totally ripped, gruff, and perfectly grumpy Wolverine played by none other than "Man of Steel" star Henry Cavill.
The introduction of this version of Wolverine not only takes a stab at DC Comics letting their Big Blue Boy Scout go without much of a celebrated send-off, but it shows that Cavill was basically in the wrong comic book universe this whole time. While it's not likely that we'll see Cavill pick up the...

Saturday Night Live star Colin Jost left his role as a 2024 Paris Olympics correspondent after he endured numerous injuries in Tahiti.
Jost took the role of “Olympics Surfing Correspondent” for NBC’s coverage of the competition in Tahiti. Part of his “reporting” included critical descriptions of his surfing skills and various related ailments, many of which surfers in the tropics commonly acquire.
First, he cut his foot on the reef, then he got a staph infection, and then he got an ear infection. “It’s – it’s a weird feeling when you’re in the medical tent way more than any of the athletes,” Jost told NBC Olympics host Maria Taylor last week. He also noted that “the medical staff, at this point, they know [his] name.”

It’s an election year and with all of the media frenzy and speculation, a bevy of new faces have stoically entered the national political fray. This sort of national political exposure comes for these career civil servants at a major inflection point for the country. So, naturally, this means that their parody equivalents will mock everything about them when they appear in Studio 8H at 30 Rockefeller for Saturday Night Live in a matter of weeks.

"We're 90 minutes of live television by a group of 20-year-olds who have never made anything. Did you ever stop and wonder why they said yes? A counterculture show starring total unknowns with zero narrative and even less structure. They want you to fail."
That's how producer Dick Ebersol (played by Cooper Hoffman of "Licorice Pizza") describes the comedic experiment that was "Saturday Night Live" in the first trailer for Jason Reitman's new movie "Saturday Night." The film chronicles all the chaos, fighting, drama, and hilarity that unfolded behind the scenes before the premiere of what would become one of the most iconic comedy shows of all time.
When Vanity Fair debuted a first look at "Saturday Night" earlier this week, Reitman described it as a comedy-thriller where time was the villain, and that's exactly what we get in the trailer you can watch above. There's a literal ticking clock...

Live from New York! It’s the Saturday Night trailer! Steel yourselves for a chaotic evening of unpredictability, unprofessionalism, and rampant consumption of sensory-altering substances because Lorne Michaels (Gabriel Labelle) hopes to make miracles happen on the sketch variety show’s opening night.
In Jason Reitman’s Saturday Night trailer, Labelle’s Lorne Michaels scrambles to get his show on the road in the face of impending failure. Between battling Rockafella Center security, being at odds with Mbc programming higher-up David Tebet (Willem Dafoe), and trying to keep his cast from killing each other, Michaels faces an uphill battle of wills to launch what eventually becomes an institution among television programming.

Next year marks two anniversaries: the (more or less) 130th of cinema and 50th of Saturday Night Live. Perhaps, thus, some fitting convergence that no idea in the history of cinema has been less-compelling than Jason Reitman doing a one-two Birdman / Sorkin pastiche about the ticking-clock tension of whether or not Saturday Night Live‘s first episode will make it to air while, I’ll go ahead and presume, telling us a thing or two about how the culture forever changed because some comedians did a few skits.
Yet the bell tolls for thee, and Saturday Night will have its theatrical debut on October 11, the 49th anniversary of SNL‘s premiere––kind of an odd discrepancy, and it would’ve admittedly been neat to release the film on the same Saturday 50 years later, but why do I care about this. "Saturday Night Live" is, oddly enough, usually a pretty key part of any American election cycle. Name a president and it's easy to picture the person who played them on the long-running NBC sketch show. Say George W. Bush and it's probably just as easy to envision Will Ferrell's take on the former president as it is the man himself. As such, all eyes are now on who will be cast to play Minnesota Governor Tim Walz on "SNL" for its forthcoming 50th season, as he was recently selected to be the running mate for Kamala Harris, the Democratic nominee to become our next Potus. For now, though, at least one favorite for the role has taken his hat out of the ring.

Despite an offer from Lorne Michaels, Steve Martin says he will not portray vice presidential candidate Tim Walz on Saturday Night Live. Not long after Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic nominee for president, picked Minnesota’s Gov. Tim Walz as her running mate, social media users began to line up candidates to play Walz when Saturday Night Live returns in the fall. At the top of the list: Steve Martin, who, with his wispy white hair, glasses and genial dad-like demeanor, bears a certain resemblance to Walz. Martin got into the spirit of things Tuesday, posting on Threads: I just...

The debut night for Saturday Night Live was no walk in the park, as seen in the trailer for Jason Reitman’s forthcoming movie about the NBC sketch show’s origins.
Sony Pictures released the first trailer for Saturday Night ahead of its Oct. 11 theatrical release. Reitman helmed the feature that focuses on the behind-the-scenes moments leading up to SNL’s premiere broadcast that aired Oct. 11, 1975.
The trailer highlights the chaos that transpired over the course of the final 90 minutes prior to the start of that first-ever episode. This includes a tense exchange between series creator Lorne Michaels (played by Gabriel Labelle) and NBC executive Dick Ebersol (Cooper Hoffman).

Live from New York, it’s a very chaotic “Saturday Night.”
Jason Reitman’s new film, which dramatizes the airing of the first-ever episode of “Saturday Night Live” back in 1975, hits theaters on Oct. 11, courtesy of Columbia Pictures, just as the NBC show celebrates its 50th anniversary season. But you can at least get a taste of the mayhem, thanks to a brand-new trailer, which you can watch below.
The trailer certainly captures the franticness of those opening night jitters (perhaps fueled by substances both legal and illegal). Reitman recently described the movie to Vanity Fair as “a thriller-comedy, if you can call that a genre.” And you definitely get that vibe, especially since, in the same article, Reitman admitted that it was essentially playing out in real time, covering the 90 minutes before the show went live — and changed television forever.

The long-running sketch comedy showcase already has Maya Rudolph returning to represent the current Vice President and presidential hopeful Kamala Harris, and now wants Steve Martin to come aboard as Harris’ running mate, Tim Walz.
