Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight had a score that was addictive as well as haunting for fans. The Joker theme stood out in the film and the legendary Hans Zimmer was predominantly behind the score. Zimmer worked alongside James Newton Howard in the film but their work in the film was mostly split. While Zimmer worked on the Joker theme, Howard was tasked with the score for Harvey Dent’s arc.

There are seven games in the Borderlands series, games whose procedurally generated rewards and core mechanics and science fictional nihilism with Western influences could see them described as non-voter oater looter shooters.
I'm not going to say more effort went into trying to construct that sentence than Borderland's script. However there's noises that co-writer Joe Crombie is a) a pseudonym and b) that the pen behind that nom de plume Craig Mazin is disavowing any connection to the script. That's the Craig Mazin who penned video game adaptation The Last Of Us, an episode of which has been nominated for a Hugo award that puts it in the same august company as Dune the novel and Dune the film. Hollywood is having trouble filling theaters, so it’s turning to the power of online fandom, hoping digital content creators can help juice more hype for their latest films. Catering to that interest, TikTok is introducing Spotlight, a new suite of tools for film and TV studios to tap into its user base and encourage sales of things like tickets and streaming service subscriptions.
“Whether old or new, TikTok’s algorithm is personalized For You and runs independent of a timeline, so it has the power to breathe new life into past programming, just as effectively as the latest blockbuster hit,” TikTok said in a blog post about Spotlight. (It’s correct: just look how many songs have seen rebirth on TikTok.) “This behavior has made our platform a thriving place for entertainment fans, but until now, there has never been a reliable way for marketers to tap into this unique ecosystem.

Denis Villenueve approached his first "Dune" film by adapting only half of Frank Herbert's original novel, betting he could tell the story's second chunk in a sequel. This gambit paid off when "Dune" became a box office success, but it meant holding back some characters for "Part Two."
Among them was Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen, nephew of Baron Vladimir and Paul Atreides' (Timothee Chalamet) counterpart. Feyd made his debut in "Dune: Part Two" played by Austin Butler, and what a debut it was. Like in the book, Feyd celebrates his birthday in the gladiatorial pits of Harkonnen homeworld Giedi Prime, killing three drugged Atreides captives. If you want a taste of what a science-fiction version of "Gladiator" would look like, there you go.
Villenueve's realization of the scene is memorable for two reasons. One, Butler, who intuitively chooses to do an impression of Stellan Skarsgård -- the actor playing his uncle...

Wednesday’s earnings calls told a tale of two enormous entertainment companies going in starkly different directions.
Warner Bros. Discovery shocked Hollywood with a $10 billion quarterly net loss that included a $9.1 billion write-down on the value of the company’s struggling linear TV assets.
That came in stark contrast to Disney, which just hours earlier touted its latest milestone – a quarterly profit of $47 million for its combined direct-to-consumer business. And its studio segment was saved from potential disaster by the blowout success of Pixar’s “Inside Out 2.”
While Disney seemingly turned a corner in its race to catch streaming leader Netflix, Wbd and its beleaguered CEO David Zaslav are staring down the barrel of a much-needed strategic reset — one that could involve selling the company or separating assets into different entities.
“Last summer ‘Barbie’ brought back pink but now Warner is seeing nothing but red,” said analyst Jamie Lumley at Third Bridge.

Several veterans from around the entertainment industry have banded together to shake up the horror and sci-fi space. As was first announced at this year's San Diego Comic-Con (via The Hollywood Reporter), Panick Entertainment is a new horror and sci-fi production company. Its focus will specifically be in the genre space, with plans to prioritize publishing and making films, TV shows, and games.
The company was founded by a team of comic industry veterans, including Kris Longo, who is heading up the company. Adam Schlagman (DC Comics), Mark McCann, Doug Pasko ("The Outpost"), and C. Christopher Chiang (DC Comics) are also part of the venture. The first project coming from the company is a new five-issue horror comic from David Dastmalchian of "The Last Voyage of the Demeter" and "Dune" fame. He'll be writing this currently untitled revenge tale alongside Leah Kilpatrick.

One of Tom Cruise’s most definable abilities has become his versatility as an actor. He has played all kinds of roles, ranging from spies to pilots, undercover agents, and even a sports agent. Being the heartthrob of Hollywood for decades, it is not surprising that he has a huge following that adores almost every film that he is in. Despite all his talent, however, there is one film from his career that stands out due to its uniqueness.

Great filmmakers are expected to know a lot about movies, from the classics to the latest hits. It’s like studying for a test, helping them grow in their craft. With so many geniuses in the industry, some stand out more than others. But what’s really surprising is that at least one of them doesn’t follow this trend.

David Lynch’s directorial genius is undeniable, with a career marked by innovative storytelling and unique visual styles. In his decades-long career, the filmmaker has often pushed the boundaries of cinema. But before his health took a turn for the worse, Lynch had made a surprising vow to never make a feature film again.

Dream Scenario director Kristoffer Borgli has found himself in, well, a dream scenario aptly enough. Hot on the heels of his wackadoodle Nic Cage starrer from last year, the Norwegian filmmaker is preparing to reteam with A24 for his next feature, The Drama — and he's got two incredible actors eyed to lead it. According to Deadline, Dune star Zendaya and The Batman's Robert Pattinson are both in early negotiations to lead the project, written by Borgli himself and set to be produced by Midsommar helmsman Ari Aster.
Per Deadline's reporting, A24 were keen to work with Borgli again after the success of the Sick Of Myself director's aforementioned, Cage-stuffed psycho-comic-drama, and even more-so once Zendaya became interested in the project. And although details on what exactly The Drama will revolve around are currently being kept shtum, word on the street is that the movie will follow a couple...

The impact of Frank Herbert’s Dune upon its release, which reshaped the sci-fi landscape, can’t be overstated. While it would take another two decades before the novel saw its own big-screen adaptation, directed by David Lynch, it did contribute to making George Lucas’ Star Wars iconic.
While Star Wars is an amalgamation of many works, including Akira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai and Victor Fleming’s The Wizard of Oz, it’s the influence of Dune that stands out the most. But despite the similarities, Lynch was less than thrilled when asked to direct Return of the Jedi.

Before helming the first Dune adaptation in 1984, which ended up becoming one of the biggest mishaps in David Lynch‘s career, the director was initially offered to take the wheel of Star Wars.

A24 is collaborating once again with Dream Scenario director Kristoffer Borgli, with Zendaya and Robert Pattinson on board for The Drama.
There was plenty of critical acclaim for Kristoffer Borgli’s 2023 offbeat drama Dream Scenario. The film starred Nicolas Cage as a college professor who becomes a global celebrity when he starts appearing in everybody’s dreams across the globe. The film possessed that trademark unconventionality that we’ve come to expect from A24 films and scored some good reviews too.
As such – despite publicly expressing a desire to movie its projects further into the mainstream – there was always a chance that A24 would want to be involved in Borgli’s next project. It looks like the studio will get to have its cake and eat it, given that the filmmaker is set to sign up two major names for his next film, simply titled The Drama.

Zendaya stayed in an ultra-luxe, 5-star hotel during her trip to Paris for the 2024 Summer Olympics. But the 27-year-old kept things low-key regarding her style. She stepped out with security near the famous Place de la Concorde, walking near the Seine River in a laid-back yet sexy look.

David Lynch’s career as a renowned filmmaker, screenwriter, and artist is distinguished by his unique style, delving deeply into the human psyche with captivating, dreamlike visuals. As an auteur, he masterfully fuses experimental film techniques, blending unconventional horror and avant-garde cinema with box office profits.
Before making his first experimental shorts he studied painting at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in the sixties. His foray into film began with a one-minute short he created for a contest in Philadelphia that led him to the American Film Institute, where he made The Grandmother (1970) and started working on the indie cult classic, Eraserhead (1976).
Lynch went mainstream with The Elephant Man (1980) and ventured into science fiction with Dune, based on Frank Herbert’s novel and starring Kyle MacLachlan. Lynch would continue to collaborate with MacLachlan in future projects, including his next art house project,...

Exclusive: Following the acclaim of his most recent film Dream Scenario, director Kristoffer Borgli is reuniting with A24 and looks to have landed two of the town’s biggest names to star in his next film. Sources tell Deadline that A24 is set to finance and produce Borgli’s The Drama, with Zendaya and Robert Pattinson in early negotiations to star. Borgli will direct from a script he wrote.
Ari Aster, Lars Knudsen and Tyler Campellone will produce under their Square Peg banner. Project details are under wraps, but rumors suggest it’s about a romance that takes an unexpected turn before a couple’s big day.
This marks another film collaboration between Square Peg and A24 that previously resulted in Hereditary, Midsommar, Dream Scenario as well as upcoming films Death of a Unicorn starring Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega and Eddington starring Joaquin Phoenix, Pedro Pascal and Emma Stone.

Legendary director David Lynch is giving an update on his health.
The Blue Velvet director and Twin Peaks creator says he’s been diagnosed with emphysema from many years of smoking and that he’s now housebound. He says he cannot leave his home over fears he’ll get Covid.
“I’ve gotten emphysema from smoking for so long and so I’m homebound whether I like it or not,” the 78-year-old Lynch told Sight & Sound (via The Independent). “It would be very bad for me to get sick, even with a cold.”
The director added he “can only walk a short distance before” running out of oxygen.
Lynch noted he’s unlikely to direct a film again, unless he could shoot a film remotely. “I would do it remotely if it comes to it,” he said. “I wouldn’t like that so much.”

David Lynch, the groundbreaking director of “Blue Velvet” and “Mulholland Drive” and the creator of “Twin Peaks,” says that it’s unlikely that he’ll direct again after being diagnosed with emphysema.
In an interview with Sight & Sound magazine (via The Independent), the 78-year-old director said, ““I’ve gotten emphysema from smoking for so long and so I’m homebound whether I like it or not. Compared to most planets in the Known Universe in Frank Herbert's "Dune" saga, the lush oceanic planet of Caladan feels like paradise. The environmental facets of this bountiful planet are often used to evoke sharp contrasts with Giedi Prime or Arrakis, as the latter feature rough terrains and near-inhospitable conditions that have shaped its inhabitants for millennia. While Giedi Prime is a bleak, hyper-industrialist dystopia, the dunes of Arrakis challenge every invader staking a claim on the planet's resources, its sacred secrets only privy to the mysterious Fremen. In stark contrast to these harsh environments, Caladan has always been associated with a flourishing economy and general prosperity, its overabundance of water emerging as a mythic dream to those who view it as a luxury instead of a necessity.
Castle Caladan is the nexus of Paul Atreides' home planet; it is an enduring symbol of the Atreides stronghold, whose rule...

"Dune" is an interesting science-fiction world because it is extremely fantastical in many places, like the Spice Guild's mutant navigators, the anti-gravity attack of "Dune: Part Two," everything about the giant worms, and of course, "God Emperor of Dune," a story so bizarre only a cartoon has dared adapt it. And yet, it is also a world that is clearly meant to be based in our universe. In the books, the Atraides trace their line back to ancient Greece, and Paul reads from a book that talks about Earth, or Old Terra, the planet thought to be where humanity originated. Paul even compares himself to Genghis Khan and Hitler at one point.
The line between the fantastical and the grounded is rather thin in "Dune," and in Denis Villeneuve's adaptations we almost got some very specific and contemporary Canadian lingo make its way to Arrakis. As Josh Brolin told Collider,...

David Lynch is not very fond of his film adaptation of Frank Herbert's "Dune," feeling that it was too much a studio monster than his personal vision. After the success of "The Elephant Man" in 1980, Lynch was approached by multiple studios to handle gigantic blockbuster projects; Lynch's fans will point casual readers to an anecdote he once told about being invited by George Lucas to direct "Return of the Jedi." Learning about the franchise gave Lynch a headache, especially when he learned what a Wookiee was.
The blockbuster project Lynch accepted instead was "Dune," which he was able to make in his own preferred idiom. Even so, Lynch didn't have total creative control and felt that the whole picture was a bit of a mess. Storytelling-wise, he may be correct; a lot of information flies at the audience pretty quickly, and Frank Herbert's massively complex mythology isn't easily understood...

So how many features released during the current 2024 calendar year will end up becoming box office behemoths? Stay tuned.
To date, the biggest money-makers of the year are a pair of highly anticipated sequels: “Inside Out 2” and “Dune: Part Two.” Scroll through our gallery above (or click here for direct access) to see all of the 2024 box office hits so far that made more than $100 million in the United States. Science fiction juggernaut Legendary Television has acquired the television rights to bestselling author Neal Stephenson’s critically acclaimed post-apocalyptic novel “Seveneves.” Adapting Stephenson’s ambitious tale of humanity’s fight for survival promises to be an epic undertaking befitting the studio’s reputation for big-budget, imaginative adaptations.
Skewing more hard sci-fi than your average dystopian drama, “Seveneves” spans millennia to chronicle the ingenuity and evolution of our species facing imminent extinction. When a mysterious force destroys the moon, trigging a global catastrophe, scientists must establish a sanctuary in space just two years before near-Earth orbit becomes uninhabitable.
With a background that includes working with tech luminaries like Jeff Bezos and Peter Thiel, Stephenson brings unparalleled scientific rigor to envisioning humanity’s high-tech future. “The depth of his research and extraordinary attention to scientific detail make ‘Seveneves’ incredibly rich material for television,” said Legendary Television President Allison Friedman.

Rebel Moon is a two part movie directed by Zac Snyder.
Today Netflix brings a gift to Zac Snyder fans, a new montage of the same story: many, many new features. In total, each movie includes about 60 minutes of bonus material.
“Rebel Moon Director’s Cut” was the network’s big bet earlier this year to compete with the Dune trilogy and the successful Disney+ series based on Star Wars.
Rebel Moon – Chapter Two: Curse of Forgiveness
Both films feature the Zac Snyder style in a Star Wars story of their own: a cosmic epic about rebellion against the mighty empire. Excessive, violent and brutal in the editing, it seems that this excessive style did not like too much, neither the specialized critics nor the general public, who soon forgot the latest ideas of Zac Snyder, who has already made several productions for Netflix.

Zendaya, now a major star in blockbuster film franchises and acclaimed television, once came close to joining the popular Disney Channel franchise ‘Descendants’ years ago after auditioning multiple times, according to a former executive at the company. The ‘Descendants’ films, which debuted in 2015 and focus on the teenage children of classic Disney villains, have since spawned multiple sequels and spin-offs airing on Disney Channel and Disney+. The franchise’s latest installment, ‘Descendants: The Rise of Red’, was released last month exclusively on Disney+.
Speaking on the podcast ‘Magical Rewind’, hosted by former Disney Channel stars Will Friedle and Sabrina Bryan, Cornelia Frame, Disney Channel’s former Vice President of Casting and Talent Relations, revealed details of Zendaya’s numerous auditions for roles in ‘Descendants’. “Zendaya did audition many times for ‘Descendants’, and that was a big deal. “Final Cut” means a director gets the last word on editing a movie. But usually, contracts and studio decisions don’t let this happen. So, many directors end up just working on projects without having any real control.
Still from Dune (1984) (Universal Pictures)
As a result, even if the final version of a movie pleases the audience, it often doesn’t fully satisfy because it may lack the depth and originality that the director’s vision would have provided. The filmmaker plays a crucial role in interpreting the script and bringing the story to life. If the their vision isn’t considered, the chances of poor reviews are high. This is exactly what happened to David Lynch when he directed Dune.

Zendaya might have become a worldwide sensation following her roles in Spider-Man movies and the Dune franchise, but there was a time when the actress was popularly known as a Disney star. Yet during her tenure at Disney, the actress surprisingly struggled to land a role she had always dreamt of.

Before starring in blockbusters, Zendaya could have almost been part of Disney Channel’s Descendants franchise at one point.
In a recent interview on the Magical Rewind podcast, Cornelia Frame, the former vp casting and talent relations at the network, revealed the Emmy winner actually auditioned multiple times for the musical fantasy television film.
“Zendaya did audition many times for Descendants, and that was a big deal,” she recalled to hosts Will Friedle (Boy Meets World) and Sabrina Bryan (The Cheetah Girls). “It was a really big deal. She auditioned over and over and really wanted it. It just ended up not going her way.”
The Descendants franchise centers on the teenage children of classic Disney villains, including Maleficent, the Evil Queen, Jafar and Cruella de Vil. The first film premiered in 2015, with two sequels debuting in 2017 and 2019. And the spinoff Descendants: The Rise of Red dropped on Disney+ earlier this month.

It is a truth universally acknowledged that Billy Crystal is one of the funniest men in Hollywood. From When Harry Met Sally to Monsters, Inc., The Princess Bride to the actual Academy Awards, the man's got the comedic Midas Touch. But the City Slickers star is set to flex his dramatic chops as a grieving psychiatrist in Sarah Thorp's (The Bounty Hunter) limited Apple TV+ supernatural mystery series Before, which has just revealed a set of first look images ahead of its two-episode premiere on 25 October. Check them out below:
Written and created by Thorp, the 10-part series — whose pilot has been directed by Silo's Adam Bernstein — is described by Apple as "an atmospheric, character-driven psychological thriller." Before becoming a worldwide sensation, Zendaya began her acting career with the Disney sitcoms, Shake It Up and K.C. Undercover. Later, she made her feature film debut with Spider-Man: Homecoming and went on to star in some highly successful theatrical projects. Yet, early in her career, the actress had a major setback after failing to land a role in the Disney channel franchise, Descendants.

The odds were stacked against Timothée Chalamet long before those set photos trickled online.
By just signing up to play Bob Dylan in James Mangold’s forthcoming bio-drama “A Complete Unknown,” the 28-year-old megastar willingly placed himself in the crosshairs of Dylan’s most devoted fans — who, let’s be honest, are not easily impressed.
When paparazzi pics of Chalamet dressed in character seeped onto social media, the response was largely negative. Dylan fanatics, or Dylanologists as they self-identify, lost faith in the project and picked apart every detail of Chalamet’s Greenwich Village getup, and a photo of the actor wrapped in an enormous (and rather hideous) scarf quickly became meme fodder.
But then the trailer came out, offering a two-minute glimpse of Mangold’s vision set to Chalamet’s rousing rendition of “A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall,” and cynical skepticism seemed to morph into cautious optimism.

In just two days, Warner Bros. Discovery’s Max and Discovery+ streaming services pulled in more unique viewers for the Paris Olympics than for the entire summer Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2021.
Max, which launched internationally ahead of the Olympics to enlist new subscribers, has benefited from strong momentum. Max has accounted for 80% of Warner Bros. Discovery’s total streaming audience for the Olympics in Europe, according to Wbd. Five times more streaming viewers have watched the Paris games compared with the same period for the Tokyo Olympics, the company said. In addition, over the opening weekend, Wbd set a new record for retail gross streaming subscriber acquisitions in a single day across Europe, ahead of its expectations.

Get ready for an onslaught of "Dune" material now that Hollywood has recognized there's quite an audience for author Frank Herbert's revered sci-fi saga. Not only do we have the upcoming Max series "Dune: Prophecy," the trailer for which reveals several sacrifices will be made, but we'll also see the return of Timothée Chalamet's Paul Atreides in a third movie from sci-fi maestro Denis Villeneuve.
After "Dune: Part Two" proved massively popular at a time when the box office wasn't exactly at its peak, you better believe Legendary Pictures decided to keep the spice flowing with a third "Dune" movie. The next installment in Villeneuve's epic saga looks likely to be an adaptation of the second novel in Herbert's original run, with Villeneuve previously revealing his eagerness to adapt "Dune Messiah." At this point, the man can basically do no wrong, having proven Herbert's supposedly "unfilmable...

Frank Herbert's "Dune" is one of the most celebrated and influential science fiction novels of all time, a dauntingly complex narrative that tackles many different themes, ideas, and tones — with the story getting weirder and weirder as time goes on.
It is a book long considered to be impossible to adapt because of how dense it is and how fantastical many of its concepts are. Despite the simplicity of the main story, the worldbuilding is detailed and layered (and no movie adaptation has fully captured this), and bringing this world to life requires extensive use of special effects. Still, as detailed as Herbert is in many of his universe's elements, particularly the ecology of Arrakis and how that entire world works, there are many important aspects that are left surprisingly vague in the books. Whether it's the ornithopter or every other spaceship having bizarre descriptions that are immediately striking...
