Chapter 2 of Kevin Costner’s Western epic Horizon: An American Saga won’t be released in August after all.
Nobody can accuse Kevin Costner of being lazy. He has financed, produced, co-written, directed and co–starred in Horizon: An American Saga, which was conceived as a four film series, each one pushing the three hour mark.
Chapter 1 was released in the UK last month, and the plan was to release Chapter 2 in August.
However, according to The Hollywood Reporter, the second film has been pulled from the release schedule. The reason given is the lacklustre box office reciepts for the first film, which took $20 million against a budget of $100 million.
It seems the plan is to encourage people to discover Horizon at home, so anticipation can build for the second film.

Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2 is no longer coming out on Aug. 16. The news comes following the misfire of Chapter 1 over the July 4th box office frame.
Still given the movie’s 50+ leaning audience and how they’re slow to come to cinemas, the filmmakers wanted to give that audience time to find the first movie whether that be in home or in theaters. Chapter 1 will hit digital on July 16. It will continue to run in theaters.
Right now, there are no plans to send the sequel directly to Max. There could be a theatrical day-and-date plan for Chapter 2, but that’s still being assessed. While it’s been reported that the movie was pulled –that’s a strong word which indicates Chapter 2 has no theatrical prospects. Again, no decision have been made. Costner’s core Yellowstone audience is at home, and the notion is for them...

Kevin Costner’s dream of over twenty years finally came to fruition earlier this week as his magnum opus Horizon: An American Saga released its first chapter. However, the response seemed to be lackluster as the $100 million film had a disastrous opening of only $11 million.
Costner’s co-star Michael Rooker, however, came to the film’s defense and urged audiences to give a chance to ‘real cinema’. He mentioned that TikTok had made people used to short-form content, thus discouraging them from watching three-hour epics like Horizon.

After decades of planning and dreaming, Kevin Costner finally got to make his ultimate magnum opus, the Horizon: An American Saga movie series. The first movie is out now, the second one is coming soon, and the third one is already filming: there’s no stopping Costner now. But Chapter 1 has been received rather… Ambiguously so far.
In that light, let’s see how Kevin Costner’s previous (iconic) Western movies did, and how they compare to his new outing.
Costner Began Gunslinging in the 20th Century
Kevin Costner’s first serious Western movie was 1985’s Silverado directed by Lawrence Kasdan. The movie followed a group of misfit friends who decided to fix the issues of a small town which, of course, involved a bunch of gunfights. Silverado was reasonably loved, with 78 and 80% Critic and Audience Scores on Rotten Tomatoes and 7.2/10 on IMDb.
His second Western became an instant classic.

Things had been looking up for the entire month of June, and they ended on a high note with two movies making more than $50 million this weekend, the first time that’s happened since “Barbenheimer” last summer. Read on for the weekend box office report.
Despite the introduction of a new prequel to a popular franchise, Pixar’s animated sequel “Inside Out 2” held onto the top spot with another $57.4 million, down 43% from last weekend. Last week, “Inside Out 2” crossed the $400 million mark ahead of the weekend, and this weekend’s take helped push it to $469.3 million, a showing that’s on par with last year’s “Barbie” and “The Super Mario Bros. Movie.” We’ll have to see if “Despicable Me 4” opening domestically on Wednesday puts the brakes on Pixar’s latest hit, though it won’t have any problem getting to $500 million and more.

Kevin Costner may be best known to modern audiences for his turn as John Dutton in the hit series, Yellowstone, however, the actor recently opened up about his shocking drug use while filming one of his films from a few years ago. So, what did the actor have to say?
Kevin Costner Is A Hollywood Legend
Kevin Coster is a certified Hollywood legend. He may be best known for many of his hit Westerns, however, the actor is never out of his depth, no matter what role comes his way. He is in his element in a cowboy hat and boots as much as he is in a suit and tie, and that kind of versatility is why he has built such a successful Hollywood career.
In addition to being in front of the camera, Kevin Costner has had his share of hits as a director as well. So, he...

Horror movies are historically one of the most dependable genres at the box office, but they've been struggling in 2024. The highest-grossing of the year so far is "Night Swim," a movie about a haunted swimming pool that scraped $54.6 million worldwide -- quite a departure from 2023 megahits like "M3GAN" and "Five Nights at Freddy's." But now, "A Quiet Place: Day One" looks set to overtake "Night Swim" in its opening weekend alone, as audiences flock back to theaters for another installment of the high-tension, low-volume horror series.
Written and directed by Michael Sarnoski ("Pig"), with a story writing credit for franchise creator John Krasinski, "A Quiet Place: Day One" is a prequel with mostly new characters (Djimon Hounsou reprises his role from "A Quiet Place: Part II") that's set in the notoriously noisy city of New York. As the movie's opening text notes, NYC regularly has noise levels of around 90 decibels...

Kevin Costner has poured his heart and soul into bringing Horizon: An American Saga to life, dedicating countless hours and his hard-earned money over many years. This ambitious project marks the beginning of a four-part film series, with the second installment scheduled for release in August. Parts three and four are currently in development.
Kevin Costner in Hoizon (image credit: Warner Brothers)
In a significant return to directing after more than two decades, Costner leads a talented ensemble cast through a sweeping narrative spanning 15 years of American history, from pre- to post-Civil War expansion. From his earlier directorial successes like Dances with Wolves and Open Range, Costner has taken on the challenge of not only directing but also financing a substantial portion of these epic films. And this is what he feels is a little ridiculous about big old Hollywood.

Kevin Costner has been defying the odds for more than 40 years.
After filming numerous flashback scenes for 1983’s The Big Chill, the movie that was poised to be his big break, he learned he had been cut out of the film entirely… but then that film’s director, Lawrence Kasdan, decided to give him another shot, casting him in a plum part in 1985’s Silverado, which made him a star.
Not long after, as a burgeoning A-lister, he was warned to avoid baseball movies because they rarely did business at the box office… but then he decided to make two of them within a year of each other, 1988’s Bull Durham and 1989’s Field of Dreams, and both turned out to be blockbusters.
More recently, after decades in the spotlight, his big screen career was flagging, and he signed up to star on a television series that would air on...

Kevin Costner Says He Makes “Movies for Men” But Always Strives to Include “Strong Women Characters”
Kevin Costner knows his audience.
The Oscar-winning director attended a live taping of Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast at the 92nd Street Y in New York City, alongside his Horizon: An American Saga co-stars Sam Worthington, Abbey Lee and Luke Wilson. During the wide-ranging conversation, Costner opened up about writing fully fleshed-out characters, particularly women, that aren’t typically seen in Westerns.
“When you start writing you go, ‘Where’s the woman?’ It just drove the story in every plot line,” he said. “It just seemed to me to be so easy. I mean, I just hardly couldn’t conceive of a scene that didn’t involve women or a young girl raised by a strong woman.”
While castmember Sienna Miller wasn’t able to attend the podcast taping, Costner sang her praises, saying that she helped bring his characters to life through her “luminous” acting before expressing his typical film audience.

Paramount’s prequel A Quiet Place: Day One is heading to a franchise record preview night between $5M-$6M, several sources inform us. Showtimes began at 3 Pm.
Tonight’s figure easily ranks ahead of the $4.3M made by the first movie in 2018, and the $4.8M made by Quiet Place: Part II on its Thursday heading into Memorial Day weekend 2021, when summer kicked off for recently reopened theaters.
Those two movies were directed by John Krasinski, while the prequel is helmed and written by Pig director Michael Sarnoski. The prequel tells the story about how the ferocious aliens with the highly sensitive ears landed on Earth in NYC. Oscar-winner Lupita Nyong’o, Joseph Quinn, Alex Wolff, and Djimon Hounsou star.
Reviews are great at 86% certified fresh, though they are the lowest of the franchise to date after chapter one (96%) and chapter 2 (91%). CinemaScore comes out tomorrow, but A Quiet Place earned a B...

Kevin Costner is not a filmmaker who thinks small. His debut feature as director, “Dances with Wolves,” was a sweeping epic of the American frontier that overcame industry skepticism in 1990 to prove that the Western genre still had relevance for contemporary audiences — winning Costner a Best Director Oscar in the process. His next directorial effort, 1997’s “The Postman,” was an even bigger swing for the fences, a post-apocalyptic fable that applied Costner’s interest in Western iconography to science fiction, creating a one-of-a-kind adventure film as bold and idiosyncratic as anything released by a Hollywood studio that year. Even a more modest production like “Open Range,” Costner’s 2003 Western about free range cowboys battling an evil rancher, sought to illuminate aspects of the old West elided by other movies, going deep into the intricate details of its characters’ work and personal lives and reconsidering the role of women in the...

Kevin Costner recently joined his “Horizon: An American Saga” cast for a live recording of the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, and he said his planned four-movie saga differs from many Western films that have come before in that its female characters “drive the story in every plot line.” Costner, who co-wrote the franchise with Jon Baird, said he “couldn’t conceive of a scene that didn’t involve a woman” while shaping the story.
“Horizon” chronicles the journey of several characters during and after the Civil War as they settle the American West. Kevin Costner stars in the film opposite a sprawling ensemble cast, which includes Sienna Miller, Jena Malone, Isabelle Fuhrman, Abbey Lee and Ella Hunt. He told the “Happy Sad Confused” audience that he is aware his directorial efforts skew more towards men in their appeal, but he said strong women is what he’s most interested in.

There can be no doubt if there is one person bound and determined to keep Hollywood’s long history of Westerns alive, it has been Kevin Costner. Ok, well Clint Eastwood too.
And that has been true right from the beginning of Costner’s career, when he played the freewheeling scene stealer Jake in Lawrence Kasdan’s Silverado in 1985. He also made an impression as the title star of 1994’s Wyatt Earp. But his real mark on the genre has been not just as an actor but also as director and producer behind the scenes, first with his Best Picture Oscar-winning 1990 pic Dances with Wolves and 2003’s terrific Open Range with co-star Robert Duvall. Despite having won an Oscar for best director in 1991, Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1 is just the fourth film that the star has directed, and the first time he’s stepped behind the camera in more than 20 years.
Costner landed an Academy Award for his directorial debut, Dances With Wolves, which he followed with 1997’s The Postman and 2003’s Open Range; since then he’s largely focused on his acting and producing projects, but said he knew he needed to come back to the director’s chair for Horizon.

Kevin Costner co-writes, directs and stars in Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1. Here’s our review of the new western.
You’ll probably find a more reliable review of Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 out there if we’re being blunt here. This is my Marvel. Kevin Costner’s never been involved in a western I’ve not liked, and many of them I outright love. His return to the saddle – not least to the director’s chair too, for the first time since the superb Open Range (2003) – has famously come about because he had to pay for it himself. And when you’re paying the bill, you can do things you want you want to.
Which is what Kevin Costner has done, signing off every last shot, with not a Hollywood executive sitting on his shoulder.

Hollywood star Kevin Costner has portrayed a wide variety of roles over many decades. From action to drama to romance, the veteran has proved his mettle in many genres while also becoming a commercially successful star at the box office. This sports fantasy drama about baseball and its legends, inspired Major League Baseball (MLB) to start a special game that is played in a ballpark adjacent to the cornfield in Dyersville, Iowa where the film was set and got its title from. Kevin Costner‘s Horizon is just over the…well, horizon. After films like Dances with Wolves, Wyatt Earp, Open Range, and even doing a little stint on the show Hatfields & McCoys, Costner has demonstrated his love for the genre and the American West. Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter One debuted at Cannes, and the reactions have been hitting similar points, which are that Costner had made an engaging film, but the length can get taxing on the viewer. The word “sprawling” would come up in a number of reviews, and Costner’s grand ol’ fashion of introducing a multitude of characters was a factor.
The first chapter of the historical epic releases next week and Costner is currently doing the rounds for promotion. According to ScreenRant, the former Yellowstone star appeared on Jake’s Takes, where he outlines why he thinks the Western genre isn’t as prevalent as it once was.

Kevin Costner spent $38 million of his own money to finance his new Western film Horizon: An American Saga. Well, the early tracking numbers are in, and the news is not good: the first part of Horizon is currently projected to make $12 million in its opening weekend of release on June 28th (via The Hollywood Reporter).
Horizon has been Costner’s passion project for decades, having first begun working on it in 1988. Now, decades later, he’s finally set to unveil the first part of what he ultimately hopes to be a four-installment film franchise that he will write, direct, and star in himself. The total budget for the first two films sits around $100 million, with Costner himself having personally contributed $38 million to the overall budget (apparently by mortgaging his house). The remaining chunk was reportedly financed through foreign sales.

Academy Award-winning visionary filmmaker Kevin Costner directs New Line Cinema’s vast Horizon: An American Saga Chapters One and Two, a multi-faceted chronicle covering the Civil War expansion and settlement of the American West. A story of America too big for one film, this true cinematic event also stars Costner, who co-writes with Jon Baird (The Explorers Guild) and produces through his Territory Pictures.
In the great tradition of Warner Bros. Pictures’ iconic Westerns, Horizon: An American Saga explores the lure of the Old West and how it was won—and lost—through the blood, sweat and tears of many. Spanning the four years of the Civil War, from 1861 to 1865, Costner’s ambitious cinematic adventure will take audiences on an emotional journey across a country at war with itself, experienced through the lens of families, friends and foes all attempting to discover what it truly means to be the United States of America.

Kevin Costner has been a very committed actor who continues to give his all with every film he does. His breakout role in The Untouchables led him to many acclaimed performances in films like Field of Dreams, Bull Durham, and A Perfect World among others. He has also established himself as a great filmmaker directing two impressive westerns Dances With Wolves and Open Range.

Costner has been dreaming about his passion project Horizon: An American Saga since the 90s, envisioning it as a four-film saga. For his fourth outing as a director Kevin Costner gets back in the saddle for another exploration of America’s roots, already visited in Dances With Wolves and Open Range.
Clearly this is a passion project which at more than three hours’ running time may just test the patience of some of the audience. It has all the hallmarks of a production destined for a television mini-series with apparently three other chapters promised by Costner.
Set in 1859 the narrative covers the territories that extend from Wyoming to Kansas, focusing on the violence that flares between the settlers and the indigenous tribes.
For anyone starved of what used to be a Hollywood staple genre Costner delivers many of the traditional ingredients with stunning landscapes, colourful characters including the man himself as a grumpy horse trader although he doesn’t appear until about an hour in.
Horizon is a settlement which only is beginning to take faltering.

Kevin Costner’s new Western epic may have gotten a 10-minute standing ovation at Cannes, but once critics got back from festival screenings to their hotel rooms, they posted reviews for Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1 that were far less enthusiastic.
Horizon is the first film in writer-director-star Costner’s massive four-picture gamble that he famously leveraged one of his homes to help finance (spending $38 million out of pocket for the $90 million-budgeted film). Chapter 1 is three hours and is largely focused on setting the stage — introducing a sprawling ensemble of characters, with the promise of more dramatic events to come in the remaining films.
There are not a large number of reviews for the post-Civil War Western tale so far, but some of the early critiques are pretty harsh. The most common complaint is the film doesn’t feel like cinema so much as a trio of back-to-back episodes of a new TV series,...

Arriving in the middle of the art smorgasbord that’s the Cannes Film Festival, a three-hour Western directed by Kevin Costner sounded like it might be just the ticket for a perfect night of counterprogramming: a grandly scaled slice of neo-classical Hollywood. That, after all, describes the other two Westerns Costner has directed (“Dances with Wolves” and “Open Range”). There’s no question that “Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1,” Costner’s fourth outing as a director, gives off some of that traditional flavor.
The movie, set in 1859 in territories that sprawl from Wyoming to Kansas, has stately mesa backdrops that look like they’d fit right into Monument Valley. For the last two years in a row, one of the major premieres at the Cannes Film Festival has been a mainstream film that works with the trappings and tropes of the Western genre. But there’s not much connection between Martin Scorsese’s Oklahoma-set 1920s period piece “Killers of the Flower Moon,” one of the hits of last year’s festival, and Kevin Costner’s “Horizon: An American Saga,” which had its premiere at the Grand Theatre Lumiere on Sunday evening.
For Scorsese, approaching that location and time period meant thinking hard about what he could bring to a genre that he felt had peaked with directors like John Ford and Howard Hawks in the 1940s and ’50s, and essentially been ended by Sam Peckinpah’s revisionist Western “The Wild Bunch” in the late 1968s.

In the great tradition of Warner Bros. Pictures’ iconic Westerns, Horizon: An American Saga explores the lure of the Old West and how it was won — and lost — through the blood, sweat, and tears of many.

Kevin Costner’s two-part Western epic “Horizon: An American Saga,” which makes its world premiere in the Out of Competition section of the Cannes Film Festival, has been acquired in France by Metropolitan FilmExport, one of the country’s biggest distributors. Daniel Baur’s K5 Intl. is handling international rights.
The films star Costner, Sienna Miller, Abbey Lee and Sam Worthington. The writers are Jon Baird and Costner. Costner produced alongside Howard Kaplan and Mark Gillard. Warner Bros. is releasing the films in the U.S. on June 28 and Aug. 16.
“Horizon” takes place over the course of 15 years on America’s Western frontier, dramatizing the lives of settlers and Indigenous groups in the region. Costner shared footage from the project at CinemaCon last month.

Kevin Costner was a big part of what made Yellowstone such a successful show. Following his exit from the hit western, Costner recently opened up about whether or not he would ever consider working with Taylor Sheridan again. So, what did the veteran actor have to say?
Yellowstone: Kevin Costner Played The Role Of John Dutton To Perfection
Kevin Costner in a Western drama has always made sense. Whether it was alongside Robert Duvall in 2003’s Open Range or opposite Bill Paxton in the Hatfields & McCoys miniseries in 2012, many fans agree that Kevin Costner is at his best as an actor when he has a cowboy hat and a gun.
Naturally, when it was first announced that Costner would play family patriarch John Dutton in Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone, it was a match made in cinema heaven. This is the kind of role that Costner was born to play,...

Kevin Costner and Francis Ford Coppola have both put their money where their mouth is, to make huge films outside the studio system…
At the time of writing, filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola is 85 years old. He owns a thriving vineyard business, and holds enough rights to his films to enjoy the kind of income most of us would happily content ourselves with, without him having to anything else. Contemporaries such as Brian De Palma and Peter Weir, as they’ve headed towards their eighth and ninth decades, have retired from filmmaking. Coppola, meanwhile, has gathered up all his chips and pushed them with some fervour towards the middle of the metaphorical table.
His long-cherished passion project is the gamble in question, a film by the name of Megalopolis that’s finished, and has cost, conservatively, around $100-120m to realise.
With no movie studio willing to back the film at the point of its conception,...

The Western is one of the many genres that have endured in the vast canon of American film. And with Horizon: An American Saga set for release soon, all eyes will be on Kevin Costner to prove that the Western is still as appealing as it ever was.
It would not be incorrect, of course, to suggest that Costner’s forthcoming passion project is pushing the boundaries of his line of work. The Western epic is a big risk for the California-born actor, given how much of his own money went into financing the flick, which will be released in two parts.
Starring Sam Worthington, Costner, and Sienna Miller, among others, the film is set during the American Civil War.
Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga
Even though the backdrop and main idea of Horizon: An American Saga is fairly well-known, Costner might still score a career-high with this film.
