The movie adaptation of the popular Borderlands video game franchise has disappointed both critics and fans since its release in early August. Starring well-known actors like Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, and Jamie Lee Curtis, the $110-120 million film has grossed only $1.3 million so far and received overwhelmingly negative reviews.
Many reviewers found issues with the movie’s plot, characters, and inconsistent tone. Audiences also felt that some casting choices did not fit the roles well. Additionally, the film strayed too far from the popular storylines and elements in the Borderlands games by blending different game plots and omitting key characters. This left fans feeling the adaptation did not accurately represent the essence of the source material.
The PG-13 rating further concerned fans, as the violent action and dark humor of the games was reportedly toned down. Stunt coordinator Jimmy O’Dee revealed cut scenes were more intense initially but removed in...

“I’ve always felt throughout my career that you can always get the audience to a slightly darker place if you tell them a couple of jokes along the way,” says Fallout executive producer/director Jonathan Nolan about the approach and tone the multi-Emmy-nominated Prime Video drama has taken in its debut season.
Joined by fellow EP and co-showrunner Graham Wagner and star Walton Goggins, Nolan was speaking at Deadline’s virtual Contenders Television: The Nominees event.
Portlandia alum Wagner agrees with Nolan’s Pov on mixed-genre storytelling.
“I think that good drama has humor, and it always has,” the showrunner says. “As we’ve sort of seen in the last 20 years, great calamities can happen, and humans are still going to be idiosyncratic, weird and a little, I don’t love the word quirky, but little quirky.”

First debuting way back in 2015, Fallout 4 has been regarded as one of the most legendary entries in the franchise. The game takes players to the year 2287, where they must find their missing child after waking up inside a vault. It’s simple in roleplaying mechanics but brings an incredible depth of storytelling and content offering.
It’s been eight years since the release of the title, and over that period, we’ve seen many players completing Fallout 4 with various strategies and tactics. However, one player has finished the entire game in a way that should be outright impossible.
Fallout 4 Player Beats the Game In a Surprising Way
Over on Fallout 4‘s official subreddit, user TheJFG posted that they’ve completed the game. However, what’s surprising is the fact that they were able to complete it by unlocking just 83/84 achievements.

Borderlands Director on Why the Movie has Its Own Canon - Main Image
When it comes to video game adaptations, there is always the question of following the game canon or establishing its own original story.
The Fallout series works in the same canon as the games, but adaptations like Tomb Raider, The Last of Us, and The Super Mario Bros. Movie have to establish their own lore to make sense storywise.
Despite the large world established by the Borderlands game, the film still decided to have its own canon, and director Eli Roth talks about the decision to stay out of the game’s timeline.
Is the Borderlands Movie Canon?
Talking to Dexerto, Roth explained that he had discussions with Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford about what continuity the Borderlands film should follow, and they both agreed that they should be in different canons. Roth explains:

Three of the biggest late-night shows – The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and Late Night with Seth Meyers – have not been on air since Joe Biden stepped down as the Democratic nominee for President.
The trio went on their summer hiatus – Olympic-induced for Fallon and Meyers – the week before Kamala Harris started running against Donald Trump so expect some politics, and Olympics, next week.
It marked the second time in as many months that the trio missed the big news of the week, having previously been on after President Biden’s disastrous debate performance and Trump’s selection of Vice President.
Colbert will be welcomed back on Monday to the Ed Sullivan Theater by CNN anchor Kaitlan Collins, who has been covering this unprecedented time in American politics for the Wbd news network. Later in the week, on Wednesday August 14, he will also be...

Many awards prognosticators expected the drama categories at this year’s Emmys to feature an odd assortment of nominated titles. Consider it a perfect storm of sorts: With the ending of HBO’s Succession (which took the top prize for three of its four seasons) and AMC’s Better Call Saul (which garnered a staggering 53 nominations across its six seasons without a single win) — plus the fact that last year’s strikes forced shows like last year’s drama nominees The Last of Us, Stranger Things, The White Lotus and Yellowjackets to delay production — this year’s contenders for best drama series include only one previous nominee in The Crown, which won the prize in 2021.

“Fallout” costume designer Amy Westcott found about her first Emmy nomination through three letters. “My assistant on ‘Fallout’ texted me and he just wrote, ‘Omg!’ And I knew from that text that that was why he was freaking out, so it was exciting,” she tells Gold Derby (watch above). “No other context. It was just O-m-g-g-g-g-g!”
Westcott was not familiar with the games on which “Fallout” is based, but she was quickly taken by its concept and its “quirky feel.” Though it’s a post-apocalyptic drama, “Fallout” eschews bleakness for a playful, darkly comic tone in a retrofuturistic world. And while many other shows have had viewers asking why TV shows are literally so dark now, it’s the opposite with “Fallout,” which pops off the screen with bright aesthetics from its sets to its costumes. “I think it was about staying away from the bleak, apocalyptic feeling. As "Deadpool & Wolverine" continues to obliterate the box office, there's been plenty of time to reminisce about Hugh Jackman's esteemed career. Even "Deadpool & Wolverine" itself included a tribute to one of Jackman's best movies by including a subtle nod to his Oscar-nominated performance as Jean Valjean in 2012's "Les Misérables." The 55-year-old has certainly had a historic Hollywood run, not only delivering critically acclaimed performances, but becoming a true comic book movie legend by defining the role of Logan/Wolverine in his many appearances as the character.
But that doesn't mean everything Jackman has done has been a success. Take 2021's "Reminiscence," for example. This sci-fi thriller was directed by Lisa Joy, who, alongside her husband Jonathan Nolan, co-created "Westworld" and more recently executive produced the massive Prime Video hit "Fallout." Unfortunately, "Reminiscence," which starred Jackman as a veteran and private investigator who offers clients the ability to relive their memories,...

It almost feels right that an Eli Roth movie based on Gearbox Software's Borderlands, a garish video game grind-a-thon that indulges nimrod irreverence and cartoon havoc, would disrupt the good vibes that video game adaptations have been bestowed of late. For generations in Hollywood, where films span from dramatic roles to whimsical comedies, actors have often sought fresh and unconventional challenges leading to both critical acclaim and curious experiments. One such leap into the unknown came from Cate Blanchett when she took on the role of Lilith in Eli Roth’s recently released video game adaptation Borderlands.

White Phosphorus – Spec Ops: The Line This is one of the most jaw-dropping moments in gaming. | Image Credit: Yager Development
Spec Ops: The Line, released in 2012, shattered the glorification of war often seen in video games. The game presented a harrowing narrative that forced players to confront the true horrors of combat. The most haunting moment occurs when the protagonist, Walker, orders the use of white phosphorus on what he believes to be enemy forces.

Skyrim players are no strangers to finding new bugs and glitches in the decade-old title. And this Redditor has brought us the Dragonborn who is easily the worst talker in all of the game. Reddit user NoAdministration1070, recently reported that their character’s speech skill plummeted to an unimaginable -999,975.
This unusual scenario has left the player unable to persuade or bribe anyone in the game. Aside from the incredible funniness of the situation, this makes it so the player can’t complete certain quests that require persuasion or bribery.

Reddit user NoAdministration1070 brought this bizarre bug to the Skyrim community, pleading for help. The post quickly gained traction and over 14,000 upvotes and hundreds of comments.
According to what the player shared, the issue first arose 46 hours into their playthrough, when they realized that simple persuasion and bribes required impossibly high amounts of gold.

[Editor’s note: this list was originally published in October 2023. It has been updated to coincide with the theatrical release of “Borderlands.”]
Every year, gamers ask themselves: Is this the year video game movies finally gain some respect? And the answer in the year 2024 might, actually, be yes.
No, none of the three video game adaptations that came out last year were outright critical successes. Quite the opposite, actually: critics saw “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” as unremarkable and mediocre, “Gran Turismo” as a glorified advertisement, and “Five Nights as Freddy’s” as a complete borefest. But the movies all performed respectably at the box office, with “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” becoming the second-highest grossing film of the year, and “Five Nights at Freddy’s” smashing expectations to become one of 2023’s biggest horror movies. These successes all affirm that, for better or worse, video game movies are hot right now. “Fallout” production designer Howard Cummings just received his sixth Emmy nomination in a category that covers a lot of territory and is also a mouthful: Best Production Design for a Narrative Period or Fantasy Program (One Hour or More). But as a fellow nominee pointed out, he might have an edge here.
“What’s funny is my Emmy category is a period and fantasy category, so they’re very disparate people in it. But one of my friends who designed one of the other shows called me up and went, ‘You’re actually the only one who actually covers both sides of that, by the way,'” Cummings tells Gold Derby (watch the exclusive video interview above). “I was like, ‘Yeah, it is. Because of the retrofuturism, it’s also period, but it’s also sci-fi.”

If you threw “Guardians of the Galaxy,” “Escape From New York” and “Fallout” into a blender, you would ruin your blender. It doesn’t matter if you tossed in DVDs or celluloid or hard drives, there’s just no way your blender will successfully mix those things together. And if you want proof — and you don’t want to ruin a perfectly good blender — watch Eli Roth’s “Borderlands,” a middling adaptation of the popular video game by GearBox, which can’t make this motley concoction work no matter how much, or possibly how little, it tries.
The original “Borderlands” video game didn’t have to worry too much about being narratively familiar because it had other positive qualities that compensated, like millions of potential weapon combinations and a distinct visual aesthetic. “This plot point is a lot like [insert movie or game here]” isn’t as much of a dealbreaker because the player can...

Women are falling out of focus on the small screen. According to a new report on gender and hiring in TV presented by IMDbPro and ReFrame — an initiative of Sundance Institute and Wif — women lost gains made over the past several years in nearly every position analyzed.
Last year’s data found that women (or gender-diverse performers) accounted for 54 percent of lead roles, while the new report details a decrease of 13 percent to 41 percent. Also released as part of the study, ReFrame and IMDbPro award a Stamp to recognize gender-balanced hiring on television shows, and this year 77 of the 200 most popular TV and streaming series of 2023-24 earned the distinction (or 38.5 percent). The total represents a dip of 8.5 percent from last year, or 20 percent from a peak in 2020-21.

The video game industry is never static. You might expect names like Hidetaka Miyazaki to pop up when talking about a list of some of the most influential figures in this business, but they’re not the first to do so.
Still, there’s no doubt their contribution to the industry is just as important as those who came before, like Sid Meier and Shigeru Miyamoto. While the old creators laid the foundation, new ones have helped elevate the medium into what it is today.
From the creators of dark, challenging worlds to the visionaries who’ve pushed the boundaries of narrative and mechanics, here’s a list of five of the most impactful personalities in gaming in recent times.

Fallout, one of Bethesda’s most established franchises, has become an icon of role-playing games, with a distinct identity filled with hilarious characters and a completely original world. A user-created new experience will delight purist fans, presenting the first title of the saga in an entirely unique manner.
Vault 13 recreates every event from the first installment using the engine of the fourth game, and the community is eagerly anticipating the upcoming demo release. This is not the first project that gets the attention of the fans.
It May Not Be Fallout: London, but Vault 13 Will Offer a Different Experience
Because there is no new game in this franchise, fans take matters into their own hands and start making their own related projects. That’s why a fan decided to make a complete remake of Fallout 1 using the engine provided by the fourth game released in 2015.

What makes the "Borderlands" video game franchise so enduring? For starters, it is a classic looter-shooter that combines the best elements of an open-world map and smooth first-person combat with a narrative embroiled in a singular sense of quirkiness that is difficult to replicate. Set in a dystopian world overrun by hypercapitalism, "Borderlands" effortlessly mixes near-future sociopolitical concerns with humanity's attempts to covet alien architecture, where every playable character emerges as distinct and fleshed-out. It is an experience that demands immersion and replay, as the franchise's roleplay elements feel fresh and audacious with every entry. "Borderlands" succeeds in balancing its brash humor with its more brutal, violent flashpoints, paving the path for a measured narrative that goes hand in hand with the thrill of player versus player (PvP) matches.
Adapting such a distinct video game franchise is a daunting task, but not wholly impossible. Prime Video's recent "Fallout" series is...

After The Last Of Us and Fallout, you’d be forgiven for thinking that we are finally enjoying an era of quality video-game adaptations, and that Borderlands, based on the wacky 2009 sci-fi shooter RPG, is riding the same wave. Hell, it’s even got Cate Blanchett (an actor who’s earned those italics twice over) in the lead role, having a bullet-spraying hoot as a grizzled yet elegant bounty hunter. And with its colourful assortment of irreverent characters, corralled by a writer/director best known previously for horror, you might also expect, or at least hope, it respectfully and effectively echoes James Gunn’s crossover success with his Guardians Of The Galaxy films.
Sadly, that ain’t the case. Borderlands so wants to be Guardians Of The Galaxy. It has retro needle drops aplenty (including a battle that kicks off to Motörhead’s ‘Ace Of Spades’) and ladles on as...

It has been a crazy few months with collaborations coming out of the woods in the gaming industry, and according to a recent announcement, Fnaf (Five Nights at Freddy’s) will be the next to make its appearance in another title.
For many, this news is something to rejoice about, as the Fnaf franchise is incredibly popular with fans around the world, but that hasn’t stopped a specific collection of gamers from feeling betrayed by this collaboration.

Having established itself as one of the leading companies in video game development, Bethesda has created several of the most popular games in recent years. Todd Howard, the company’s head, discussed how they build games like Starfield to endure over time in a recent interview.
That’s why they meticulously plan their DLCs, like Shattered Space, an upcoming game that will delve deeper into the Starborn, well in advance. Howard emphasized that they create experiences for players to enjoy for years. Skyrim is proof that this works.
The Starfield Dlc, Shattered Space, Is the First Step in All of the Future Content This Game Will Receive
For many years, Bethesda has repeatedly proven that it is a studio that invests heavily in providing an extreme amount of content to players. Major titles such as Skyrim and the Fallout saga demonstrate the team’s ability to create experiences that last for years.

The hype behind Starfield before its release was very high, due to its developers being Todd Howard’s Bethesda, a studio that is known for its immersive world-building with intricate narratives. This raised the players’ expectations even higher for the space RPG.
The game’s release met with lots of issues like infinite loading screens and a lack of depth in the narrative, leaving players super disappointed and frustrated. However, some players disregarded all the negativity, deciding to it a chance and ended up enjoying the game.
Players Finally Discovering Todd Howard’s Magic in Starfield
Starfield promised a game where players can experience a narrative depth and explore a vast, open universe filled with various planets, space stations, and factions. However, the release didn’t deliver on many promises, leaving the players frustrated and very angry, and rightly so.

It seems things are finally looking up for Starfield after a tumultuous first year, as the game approaches the release of its highly anticipated Dlc. There is a rising optimism regarding the game content, as Bethesda is actively working to improve the players’ experience. However, the increasing popularity of another Bethesda franchise might prove detrimental to Starfield‘s success.
Fallout has always been a fan-favorite franchise from Bethesda; however, there has been a surge in popularity for several reasons. While this seems fantastic for Bethesda, it might lead to it focusing on Fallout more, leaving Starfield behind.
Could Starfield Suffer Due to Fallout’s Rising Popularity?
Starfield’s success might not have come immediately, but the game has continued to build its presence over time. Despite early criticism, Bethesda has proactively addressed player feedback and implemented updates to improve the game’s overall experience.

"People don't really see me. Like, not at all, actually." Sky TV has revealed the first look teaser trailer for a dark comedy series called Sweetpea, arriving for streaming in the UK and US this fall. "The girl everyone overlooks might just be able to get away with murder." This series is based on the book of the same name written by Cj Skuse, the first in a series of books about a sweet young woman who starts killing people. The TV series is described as "a deviously twisted coming-of-'rage' story." Ella Purnell who also serves as executive producer, stars as Rhiannon, a quiet wallflower who develops a vengeful and intoxicatingly liberating taste for murder. The series cast includes Nicôle Lecky, Jon Pointing, Calam Lynch, Leah Harvey, Jeremy Swift, Dustin Demri-Burns, and Luke McGibney. Only 30 seconds of footage in here so far, not much beyond a quick intro to Purnell's character.

The modding community has always played a significant role in Bethesda games, and Starfield is no exception. Starfield’s launch was a great success even though the game was far from perfect. Like many Bethesda titles, its user experience definitely needs work.
Players can greatly improve their experience of playing the game through community-created mods. From general interface improvements to graphical and gameplay overhauls, a lot of work has been put into customizing player experiences. And in typical Bethesda fashion, some mods are just a must-use.
If you’ve recently just bought the game or are looking into modding it for the first time, these five mods are essential for anyone looking to get the most out of Starfield.

One of the biggest complaints about Starfield is its clunky and inefficient menu system.

When Bethesda’s Todd Howard spoke about Starfield in an interview with the Aias Game Maker’s Notebook podcast, he made a bold claim about the game’s longevity. Drawing comparisons to the studio’s previous hits like Skyrim and Fallout, Howard suggested that Starfield was designed to keep players engaged for the long haul.
But as players have explored the “depths” of the game’s cosmos, many have found that the game’s staying power isn’t quite living up to those promises.

For many gamers, modding is the best way to make a game feel like their own. Customizing different gameplay systems to your liking and adding and removing things that you don’t like can make the experience infinitely better.
This is especially true for Bethesda games like Fallout, Skyrim, and now Starfield, thanks to their modding potential. But there’s a big drawback that often goes unnoticed: the more time spent on modding, the less time is spent playing the game.
The Modding Trap in Bethesda games
One Reddit user recently shared their experience with mods on the subreddit of the game. They shared that they spent weeks adding, testing, and organizing mods. With 68 mods installed, they still had more they wanted to add.

Gen Z is a vital audience for networks and streaming platforms, particularly as the age group develops disposable income of its own in the years ahead. Their viewing habits differ from older generations, characterized by shorter attention spans that drive them to short-form content, a preference for user-generated content and less interest in traditional TV. These habits present a challenge for an industry accustomed to traditional methods.
Gen Z — familiar with on-demand content accessible on multiple devices, including smartphones — represents a significant portion of streaming audiences. As a result, many shows are now tailored specifically to this demographic.
To identify the TV shows that resonate most with Gen Z, we will combine two of Parrot Analytics’ capabilities: Demand data and Audience Demographics. Star Wars: Every Droid You Didn't Know that was Voiced by a Celebrity - Main Image
Droids have always been a source of slapstick and comedy in the Star Wars universe. While fans can’t see the person operating the droid, Lucasfilm does tend to cast some well-known faces to play the occasional bucket of bolts.
Anthony Daniels and Kenny Baker have already gone down in Star Wars as the most iconic droid actors, but here are some droid characters from the series that some fans may not have known were voiced by celebrities.
Bb-8 (The Force Awakens) – Bill Hader, Ben Schwartz
Starting the list, Bb-8 was considered iconic for Disney-era Star Wars as he was the first droid to kick off the Sequel Trilogy. Though he’s unintelligible throughout the films, the sounds from Bb-8 come from comedians Bill Hader (Saturday Night Live) and Ben Schwartz (Sonic the Hedgehog...

For two seasons, Fallout star Ella Purnell had the lead in a drama series called Sweetbitter for Starz. Now she returns to Starz in another show with “Sweet” in the title, this one a six episode limited series called Sweetpea, which is set to premiere as a Starz original in the United States and Canada sometime this October. While we wait to hear a specific premiere date, a teaser trailer for Sweetpea has arrived online and can be seen in the embed above.
The short description of Sweetpea goes like this: “The girl everyone overlooks might just be able to get away with murder.” Here’s some more information: Rhiannon Lewis doesn’t make much of an impression – people walk past her in the street without a second glance. She’s continually overlooked for a promotion at work, the guy she likes won’t commit, and her dad is really,...

Purnell, who not only takes the lead as Rhiannon but also acts as executive producer, dives deep into a character described as a “quiet wallflower who develops a vengeful and intoxicatingly liberating taste for murder.” The teaser opens with Rhiannon’s narration: “People don’t really see me, not at all actually. Amazon narrowly missed Wall Street estimates for total revenue in the second quarter, with that top-line softness combining with weak third-quarter guidance to send shares lower in after-hours trading.
The company’s stock joined a broader retreat by large-cap tech shares, falling almost 7% to around $172.
The Prime Video parent said revenue went up 10% in the quarter ended June 30, reaching $148 billion in the second quarter, falling short of analysts’ consensus of $158.56 billion.
Net income easily surpassed forecasts, nearly doubling the year-ago period to hit $1.26 per diluted share.
The earnings report included projections of third-quarter sales, which Amazon said would rise by 8%-11% to $154 billion-$158.5 billion.

The second Emmys of 2024 is sure to set records. With multiple first-time nominees, groundbreaking recognition for Indigenous performers and an actual good mix of shows, the nominations cast a wide net. Below, Variety breaks down the contenders in most of the main categories.
Drama Series
The drama category is one of the most peculiar in this year’s Emmy competition. “The Crown” is the only series nominated last year, while the rest are either new shows or shows finally getting their due. In fact, “The Crown” — which took home this trophy in 2021 — was probably the front-runner until FX decided freshman hit “Shōgun” would not be a limited series. Other newcomers this year: Amazon Prime Video’s “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” and “Fallout,” plus Netflix’s “3 Body Problem” for their freshman seasons; these choices demonstrate that the TV Academy isn’t focusing on one type of drama. This post contains spoilers for "Deadpool & Wolverine."
"Deadpool & Wolverine" is one of those movies that leaves much to discuss, particularly for those who are hardcore Marvel fans. We're not just dealing with the Marvel Cinematic Universe here, but we're also running up against various heroes from the Fox era of Marvel, with this movie essentially serving as a big goodbye to that era. Not only that, but the film even plays with variant versions of certain "X-Men" characters from throughout the multiverse. One of the biggest, most impactful examples was bringing "Man of Steel" star Henry Cavill over from the DC Universe to have him play a version of Wolverine. But the movie also winds up paying a bit of an homage to one of Cavill's most infamous on-screen moments to date.

Ella Purnell stars as Rhiannon, a quiet wallflower who develops a vengeful and intoxicatingly liberating taste for murder.
In the Starz series, “Rhiannon Lewis doesn’t make much of an impression – people walk past her in the street without a second glance. She’s continually overlooked for a promotion at work, the guy she likes won’t commit, and her dad is really, really sick. Then everything in her life turns upside down. Rhiannon is pushed over the edge and loses control. Suddenly the wallflower is gone, and in its place is a young woman capable of anything… Rhiannon’s life transforms as she steps into a new, intoxicating power, but can she keep her killer secret?”

Gold Derby can exclusively reveal that Idris Elba is entering the “Hijack” episode “Comply Slowly” as his 2024 Emmy Award submission for Best Drama Actor. “Comply Slowly” aired on July 26, 2023, and is the sixth episode of the Apple TV+ drama’s first season.
In “Comply Slowly”: Sam’s (Elba) son Kai (Jude Cudjoe) escapes the assassins by hiding inside a wardrobe. The British government concedes to the demands of the hijackers and releases Edgar (Simon McBurney) and John (Ian Burfield) from prison. However, when the police keep following them, Edgar texts the hijackers to kill one passenger and send a photo. Sam intervenes and convinces Stuart (Neil Maskell) that there is already a dead passenger on board and therefore no need to kill another one. The government task force tracks Edgar’s car using drone surveillance and sees that he and John are headed to a nearby airfield. Meanwhile,...

Starz released the teaser today for the deviously twisted coming-of-age story Sweetpea, which will premiere this October. Ella Purnell stars as Rhiannon, a quiet wallflower who develops a vengeful and intoxicatingly liberating taste for murder.
Ella Purnell, who also serves as executive producer, said, “I truly cannot wait for the world to meet Sweetpea! I’ve loved exploring this incredibly complex character, as well as working alongside our dynamic cast and powerhouses Ella Jones, Kristie Swain, and Patrick Walters.”
The actress continued: “This has been one of the most fulfilling experiences of my career so far. At its core, the series is about a woman finally finding her voice, told through a uniquely dark and comedic lens. I hope audiences have as much fun going on Rhiannon Lewis’ wild, coming-of-rage journey as we did bringing it to life.”

No one does murder quite like Ella Purnell. The “Yellowjackets” and “Fallout” actress next leads the upcoming Starz series “Sweetpea,” which is billed as a “deviously twisted coming-of-rage story.”
Purnell stars as Rhiannon, a quiet wallflower who develops a vengeful and intoxicatingly liberating taste for murder after her life is upended. She’s overlooked for a promotion at work, the guy she likes won’t commit, and her dad is sick.
So how does Rhiannon cope? Well, according to this first teaser, all it takes is a cathartic scream and blood on her hands to cleanse her anger. Nicôle Lecky, Jon Pointing, Calam Lynch, Leah Harvey, Jeremy Swift, and Dustin Demri-Burns co-star.
