This article contains spoilers for "Batman: Caped Crusader."
"Batman: Caped Crusader" had a lot to live up to, as the legacy of "Batman: The Animated Series" has loomed large over every single DC animated project for the past 30 years. Thankfully, Bruce Timm has done it again, and he has not only delivered a worthy spiritual successor to "The Animated Series," but delivered the scariest, most mature Batman story in years with "Caped Crusader."
The show has a fantastic portrayal of Gotham City and crime within its zip code, at times echoing the brilliance of "Gotham Central." It boasts exquisite animation by Studio Iam and Studio Grida, with a production design that is reminiscent of "Batman: The Animated Series" while also standing out as its own take on the Batman mythos.

Suicide Squad 2016 Director Revives #ReleaseTheAyerCut Movement - Main Image
#ReleaseTheSnyderCut was a revelation in that director Zack Snyder was given a chance to release his version of Justice League years after WB officially released a re-cut version directed by Joss Whedon.
So many things had to be in place for the cut to happen—specifically, a global pandemic forced WB to look for things they could release without shooting anything.
With Snyder being able to release his original vision of the film, fans had also demanded that WB #ReleaseTheAyerCut of Suicide Squad 2016, which was said to have been heavily edited without the consent of director David Ayer.
While Ayer had said that he’d given up on releasing it, he’s now posted about the movement again and is riling up fans to help support the release of his version of the movie.

Colin Farrell damn near stole the show in The Batman, disappearing beneath layers of incredibly convincing prosthetics to play Oswald Cobblepot, aka The Penguin. While we await The Batman Part II, we will be thrust back into the Gotham City underworld with The Penguin, an HBO series centering around the titular character. The Penguin will find Oswald taking advantage of the power vacuum created by the death of Carmine Falcone, with showrunner and executive producer Lauren LeFranc telling Empire that the series will be a Scarface story set in the world of The Batman.
“Matt [Reeves came up] with this Scarface story – a rise to power,” Lafranc explained. “I turned it into a psychological character study of this man. Mobsters historically are larger than life, so there is that slightly elevated quality to it, but he’s just a man. A very complicated man.“

In The Batman, Robert Pattinson gave us a detective-mode take on the Caped Crusader – a clue-hunting dark knight with a noirish flair. Next up from Matt Reeves’ Bat-verse? Get ready to say hello to his little friend. Or rather, enemy – because before The Batman Part II we’ll be seeing The Penguin, a streaming series crime story that takes Colin Farrell’s standout supporting role from Reeves’ film and bumps him up to headline status. Previously, Farrell’s Oswald Cobblepot was an endearingly scuzzy lowlife gangster with everything to prove. Now, in the power vacuum created by the death of Carmine Falcone, Oz is set on taking control of Gotham’s underworld.
As showrunner and executive producer Lauren LeFranc puts it, The Penguin will be nodding to one of cinema’s most archetypal gangster tales. “Matt [Reeves came up] with this Scarface story – a rise to power,” she explains. “I turned it into...

Wednesday’s earnings calls told a tale of two enormous entertainment companies going in starkly different directions.
Warner Bros. Discovery shocked Hollywood with a $10 billion quarterly net loss that included a $9.1 billion write-down on the value of the company’s struggling linear TV assets.
That came in stark contrast to Disney, which just hours earlier touted its latest milestone – a quarterly profit of $47 million for its combined direct-to-consumer business. And its studio segment was saved from potential disaster by the blowout success of Pixar’s “Inside Out 2.”
While Disney seemingly turned a corner in its race to catch streaming leader Netflix, Wbd and its beleaguered CEO David Zaslav are staring down the barrel of a much-needed strategic reset — one that could involve selling the company or separating assets into different entities.
“Last summer ‘Barbie’ brought back pink but now Warner is seeing nothing but red,” said analyst Jamie Lumley at Third Bridge.

Independent studio A24 may have scored one of the most sought-after casts of the year. Sources confirm that Zendaya and Robert Pattinson are in early negotiations to headline director Kristoffer Borgli’s new project, titled “The Drama.”
The film would continue the success both actors have found balancing mainstream blockbusters with critically-acclaimed indies. Zendaya just dominated the box office with her role in “Dune: Part Two” and shone in the tennis drama “Challengers,” while Pattinson most recently donned the bat suit for “The Batman” and has worked with auteur directors like Robert Eggers.
Though plot details are under tight wraps, “The Drama” is said to revolve around a romance that takes an intriguing detour as a couple prepares to walk down the aisle. Borgli made waves at Cannes with “Sick of Myself” and his comedic skills were on display in “Dream Scenario,” signaling he’ll bring a singular vision.

Few movies have such broad "you had to be there" appeal as "Cloverfield." Released in 2008 after a much-hyped marketing campaign featuring title-free promos and cryptic web pages, the movie wowed (and to some extent divided) audiences with a prime bit of misdirection: it was a good old-fashioned kaiju film disguised as a found footage thriller disguised as a shaky cam home video-style story.
"Cloverfield" was made during a time when J.J. Abrams was known as the mystery-crafting maestro behind "Lost," not a polarizing part of the "Star Wars" universe. Director Matt Reeves, who would go on to make the emo-Robert-Pattinson-led blockbuster "The Batman," was then known for the college-set soap "Felicity." And while the film's cast members, including Lizzy Caplan and T.J. Miller, are recognizable today, they were mostly unknown at the time of its release, lending the project a "Blair Witch"-style verisimilitude.

There are many DC projects in development, with much focus on Gunn’s Dcu and upcoming titles like “Creature Commandos” and “Superman.” However, we often overlook Elseworlds, which includes “The Batman” film series and other future projects, as they follow their own path.
The next major release is the live-action series “The Penguin,” but it won’t be the last spinoff in development. Matt Reeves and his producing partner Dylan Clark have branded this spinoff series as the “Batman Epic Crime Saga,” with “The Penguin” just the beginning.
The upcoming show is set to take place a week after the events of the film, with Falcone dead and The Penguin struggling to fill the resulting power vacuum, aided by Sofia Falcone. The duo recently discussed their plans for the cinematic universe with Entertainment Weekly.

There are plenty of DC-based projects currently in development, and while all eyes are on Gunn’s Dcu and his upcoming ‘Creature Commandos’ & ‘Superman’ we occasionally forget that Elseworlds, which ‘The Batman’ film series and several other upcoming projects are a part of, are doing their own thing. The next big thing is ‘The Penguin’ live-action series, but it’s not the last spinoff currently in development.
Matt Reeves and his producing partner Dylan Clark have named this spinoff franchise ‘Batman Epic Crime Saga’ and ‘The Penguin’ is only the beginning.
The upcoming show will take place a week after the events of the aforementioned movie. Following the events of the movie, Falcone is dead and The Penguin is desperately trying to fill the power vacuum left behind with the help of Sofia Falcone. The duo recently sat down with Entertainment Weekly and revealed their plans for the cinematic universe.

From a shady district attorney in “The Batman” to a real-life rapist in “Boys Don’t Cry” and a harrowing disembodied voice in “The Guilty,” Peter Sarsgaard is often known for characters teetering on the edge of morality. But the actor is quick to shrug off any black-and-white labels of good versus evil.
Sarsgaard, who recently appeared in the Apple TV+ series “Presumed Innocent” and now leads the indie “Coup!,” told IndieWire that he’s wary of the villain label despite audiences wanting to classify characters a certain way.
“It’s funny because for me, obviously with ‘Presumed Innocent’ now, to me I’m not a villain in that. I’m just a guy who lives by himself. I’m playing a decent person in that,” Sarsgaard said. “I’m playing a decent person in ‘Memory,’ the movie that I won the Golden Cup [the Best Actor award at the 2023 Venice Film Festival] for. I’m playing a decent person in ‘Dopesick.

To report there is little new about “Batman: Caped Crusader” is borderline irrelevant. The character is nearly 100 years old. His story has been told time and time again, typically with the same foundational pieces: Bruce Wayne, a billionaire playboy by day, dons a bat-themed disguise by night, when he patrols Gotham City’s streets for diabolical villains and various ne’er-do-wells. All this is done in the name of his parents, who — as you may have heard once or twice — were murdered in front of their adolescent son.
Over the decades, the artists who’ve told and retold Batman’s story make certain tweaks and revisions based on their own interests. Some lean into the gadgets, obsessing over his seemingly unlimited utility belt or filling up the Bat-garage with new Bat-cars, Bat-planes, and Bat-bikes. Others hone in on the world-building, painting Gotham in bright carnival colors filled with equally iridescent...

Insiders are teasing that HBO’s upcoming “The Penguin” will plunge viewers straight into the dark psyche of one of Batman’s most feared villains. Showrunner Lauren LeFranc has drawn direct comparisons to “Scarface” in her vision for the series, describing it as a “psychological character study” tracing Oswald Cobblepot’s violent rise to power.
Starring Colin Farrell reprising his role from “The Batman,” the series will explore Cobblepot’s troubled past and his obsession with gaining status in the vacated criminal landscape of Gotham. “It was important to me that he comes from nothing,” explained LeFranc, underscoring how the show will peel back the layers on the Penguin’s complex motivations.
Farrell himself teased the intensity of the narrative, telling reporters it will be “incredibly violent” and focused on “one man’s dark journey.” The aftermath of “The Batman” leaves room for ambitious criminals like Cobblepot to jockey for the top spot.

Colin Farrell is starring in the HBO Original series The Penguin based on the DC Comics character. and the showrunner is comparing it to Scarface.
Lauren LeFranc said in a recent interview that the spinoff from Matt Reeves’s The Batman focused on the villain Oswald Cobblepot is similar to the 1983 crime drama film directed by Brian De Palma.
“Matt [Reeves came up] with this Scarface story – a rise to power,” LeFranc told Empire. “I turned it into a psychological character study of this man.”
LeFranc continued, “Mobsters historically are larger than life, so there is that slightly elevated quality to it, but he’s just a man. A very complicated man.”
The series creator said that the show dives deeper into Oz Cobb’s personal life and gives into his relationship with his mother.

Following an explosive San Diego Comic-Con trailer, Empire has shared a new look at Collin Farrell as Oswald Cobblepot (or "Oz Cobb"), as he sets his sights on taking over Gotham as the city's new crime boss in HBO's The Batman spin-off series, The Penguin.

Acclaimed French filmmaker Claire Denis has offered rare praise for a Hollywood blockbuster with her lauding of Robert Pattinson’s “intimate” portrayal of Batman in Matt Reeves’ The Batman.
In a fascinating discussion with Screen Slate about her restoration of 1992 film No Fear No Die, Denis delved into what makes Pattinson’s nuanced lead performance stand out against the spectacle of a $200 million comic book tentpole.
“I like the way he constructed his Batman,” Denis told the publication. The veteran director, who worked with Pattinson on 2018’s High Life, was drawn to his ability to extract complex characterization from beneath the Dark Knight’s cowl.
“It’s very intimate and delicate,” Denis elaborated, noting Pattinson infused Bruce Wayne with vulnerabilities the role doesn’t always allow. She compared his inward-looking take to experiencing “two films in one” – the emotionally grounded Batman story within the CGI-fueled blockbuster around it.

Claire Denis is applauding her collaborator Robert Pattinson’s dedicated performance as the Caped Crusader in “The Batman.”
During a discussion with Screen Slate to celebrate the restoration of her 1992 film “No Fear, No Die,” Denis was jokingly asked whether she would direct a “Batman” franchise film. Denis instead took the opportunity to praise her “High Life” actor Pattinson for embodying the role in an “intimate and delicate” manner for Matt Reeves’ 2022 film “The Batman.” Pattinson will re-don the mask for the slated 2026 sequel.

Prime Video’s new animated series “Batman: Caped Crusader” isn’t a reinvention of Batman, but it is a fresh new take on Bruce Wayne and the heroes and villains of Gotham.

It’s a great time to be a Claire Denis fan. After delivering two (severely underrated) movies in one year with Both Sides of the Blade and Stars at Noon, she’s prepping a pair of new projects. The show will see Colin Farrell step into the spotlight after he wowed everyone with his performance as Oswald "Oz" Cobblepot a.k.a. the Penguin in Matt Reeves' "The Batman." Playing a cross between Joe Pesci's Tommy DeVito in "Goodfellas" and Bob Hoskins' Harold Shand in "The Long Good Friday," Farrell was almost unrecognizable in the role. The actor had "unbridled fun" with the character, disappearing behind the extensive prosthetics to bring us a version of the infamous Batman rogue that was much more of a wise guy/crime boss and less of a "hideous penguin man of the sewer" (to borrow a phrase used to describe Danny DeVito's Penguin in "Batman Returns").
But while Farrell was undeniably one of the best things about "The Batman," whether he can sustain an entire premium drama remains to be seen.

Since then, he continued to star in several notable projects, including portraying the Dark Knight in The Batman. However, long before he became a household name, he had a significant role as Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

Dolly Parton’s Dollywood went viral over the weekend after heavy rainfall hit eastern Tennessee, trapping guests in the theme park following floods.
Following the multiple reports of the incidents on social media, Dollywood Parks & Resorts issued a statement acknowledging the severe flooding.
“This afternoon, Sunday, July 28, a strong thunderstorm caused flash flooding at Dollywood,” reads the statement shared on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter. “With the assistance of Pigeon Forge Police and Fire Departments, park personnel directed guests to safety during the storm. At this time, one minor injury has been reported.”
The park stated that Dollywood supported “guests whose vehicles were affected by this weather event, and cleanup crews have been deployed.”
Dollywood was expected to open again to guests on Monday, July 29, at noon, adding, “Park officials will continue to assess conditions, and updates will be posted to our social media pages as additional information becomes available.

Right after Colin Farrell’s Oswald “Oz” Cobb shares a heartfelt waltz with his mother in the latest trailer for The Penguin, he sets out on a deadly crusade stabbing his first victim with a pocket knife and throwing the next into a body bag.
“The world ain’t set up for the honest man to succeed,” Cobb says in the trailer. “That should be the American dream right there. You know, a beautiful story with a happy ending. But that ain’t the way the world works.”

I shall only briefly touch on the corporate politics surrounding the release of "Batman: Caped Crusader." The new animated series, overseen by "Batman: The Animated Series" honcho Bruce Timm and pop culture archbishop J.J. Abrams, was handed off to Amazon during David Zaslav's aggravating Warner Bros. fire sale. Zaslav infamously axed many popular shows from HBO Max (now just called "Max"), canceled seemingly shoo-in successes, and even shelved completed movies for tax write-offs. Batman had long been associated with Warner Bros. -- the studio has released every piece of Batman media since 1967 -- so to hand such a famous character to another studio seemed like a foolish financial decision in the eyes of the world.
At the end of the day, however, those financial decisions are but red tape, a mere roadblock on the way to accessing a great show. And make no mistake, "Caped Crusader" is a great show.
