Even though MaXXXine is supposedly the last movie in the X trilogy helmed by Ti West and star Mia Goth, Bloody Disgusting is now reporting that "retro-style novelizations" of the three films are in the works, with the first one scheduled for release this September!
The books will be penned by Tim Waggoner, a Bram Stoker Award-winning author who has written many of these kinds of novelizations before, including the upcoming book version of Terrifier 2. Waggoner has also written novels for the Alien and Halloween franchise, specifically the Halloween Ends novelization and the story Alien: Prototype.
Apart from media tie-ins, Waggoner has written many original horror novels and YA books, as well as his writing help books, the Writing in the Dark series.

Ti West and Mia Goth return with the final installation of the X trilogy, MaXXXine. Set during the period of 1980s, the film revolves around Maxine Minx’s journey from the adult entertainment industry to good old Hollywood. The only surviving member of the Texas massacre, Maxine was a headstrong girl determined to become a superstar, but someone was not happy with her progress. Visually, Ti West brings the 80s nostalgia to life. The bold colors, the punk fashion, the right-wing extremists campaigning against heavy metal, the home-video style footage, and the hunt for the Night Stalker taking over prime-time news—the first few minutes of MaXXXine are exciting. But unlike his previous works, X and Pearl, West fails to surprise this time. It is all too predictable, mediocre, and overall disappointing.
Spoiler Alert
Why were Maxine’s friends attacked?
With the Night Stalker on the loose, people were advised...

Director Ti West's conclusion to the "X" trilogy is coming home. West and star Mia Goth rounded out their decades-spanning horror trilogy this year with "MaXXXine," picking up a little while after "X" left off ("Pearl" was a prequel). The film brings the action to the '80s with Goth's Maxine Minx trying to fulfill her dream of becoming a star, and naturally, things get bloody along the way. For those who may have missed the retro, murderous trip through Hollywood, fear not! You can now watch the film from the comfort of home.
A24 has released "MaXXXine" on VOD following its successful run at the box office. The movie is now available through a variety of digital retailers such as Apple TV, Google Play, Fandango at Home, and Prime Video, among others. It is currently available to rent...

Netflix has several television and film selections from which to choose as we enter the last full month of summer. Several animated films like Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie (2024) and Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax (2012) provide a way to hold onto the season, especially with their focus on the ocean, summer sun and the environment.
Other films provide an escape from the back-to-school dread that some might be feeling, whether it be the Oscar-winning VFX in Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color or the antics in Migration, there are many options. Pearl even gives an early taste of all things spooky.

James Gunn and Peter Safran are carrying a huge weight on their back. It is not easy to bring to life a cinematic universe chronicling the adventures of characters in DC Comics. And the reboot of the DC Universe is still in its nascent stages, with filming for Superman: Legacy, which is the first chapter in the reboot of Dcu, having kicked off in January, 2024 only.

This summer, A24 wants theatergoers to relive their own teenage dreams – or nightmares, depending on the films selected in their upcoming series.
A24 and AMC Theaters announced the film series “A24 Presents: A Teenage Dream Series,” which includes four beloved A24 films that deal with tweens, teens, and everything in between. The series begins August 7 with Bo Burnham’s directorial debut “Eighth Grade.” A new film will screen each Wednesday through August 28.
The angst and back-to-school dread that comes with the August Summer Scaries is embodied by the slew of selected films that each embody different genres, including (of course) horror.

Ti West’s B-movie trilogy has explored many themes, but does it truly capture the essence of high concepts? The series began with ‘X,’ introducing viewers to Maxine Minx (Mia Goth) and her journey in the adult film industry. A parallel storyline featured the elderly and homicidal Pearl, both characters played by Mia Goth. Maxine’s iconic line in the mirror, ‘I’m a f***in sex symbol’, encapsulated her self-perception and ambition. The sequel, ‘Pearl,’ shifted the focus to a young version of Pearl set in 1918. The complex portrayal of Pearl wasn’t just about horror—Goth’s performance stepped into deeper emotional territory. Her...

Oscar-nominated director Lee Isaac Chung is stepping into the realm of summer blockbusters with "Twisters." Hitting theaters this weekend, the film serves as a standalone sequel to Jan de Bont's 1996 smash box office hit "Twister." It's a big step up for Chung, who previously directed the low-budget "Minari," which was one of the most acclaimed movies of 2020. And while this is his feature follow-up, Chung has had some experience working in the blockbuster realm on the small screen in the "Star Wars" universe. As it turns out, that experience directly paved the way for him to land the gig directing this massive summer tentpole.
Chung recently spoke with The Hollywood Reporter in honor of "Twisters" touching down in theaters. During the conversation, the filmmaker was asked if his work on "The Mandalorian" season 3 and the upcoming "Star Wars" series "Skeleton Crew" from Jon Watts were warm-up jobs for something bigger.

Any mention of Rotten Tomatoes scores must include a brief explanation of how the scores work. First, a critic or outlet needs to be approved by Rotten Tomatoes before they are permitted to submit a review. Approval is based mostly on career longevity, volume of readership, or both. When a critic submits their review to Rotten Tomatoes, they choose for themselves whether the review counts as positive or negative ("fresh" or "rotten" by Rt's gauge). Different critics have different criteria as to what counts as positive or negative. Some, for instance, count a two-and-a-half star review as positive, and others count that as negative.
Rotten Tomatoes then calculates the percentage of positive reviews vs. negative reviews, coming up with an "approval rating." If at least 60% of the reviews are positive, the film is declared "fresh." 59% and below counts as "rotten."

A lot of horror movies nowadays try to build up hype with critics claiming that they’re “one the scariest movies ever” or “the scariest movie since The Exorcist.” And while that buzz is similarly surrounding Longlegs, the marketing for the film alone is certainly making an impression that sets it apart from the others. In the review from our own Chris Bumbray, he explains that the film lives up to a lot of the claims, “Once the credits rolled, I found myself surprisingly shaken up by what I’d just seen, and it’s a film I’ll need to chew on in the coming weeks. Expect this one to make major waves among horror fans when it opens on July 12th. Will it be considered a new classic? Time will tell, but for me, this was a pretty dazzling piece of work.”

Up, Up, and Away! Truth, Justice, and The American Way. These immediately cause comic fans to conjure up one specific character, The Big Blue Boy Scout. Superman. Heralded as the one that started the superhero boom in comics way back in 1938, there have been a lot of live-action versions over the years. Last year’s Flash movie highlighted some of the more popular ones and even one that had never actually been put on film. With James Gunn taking over the Dcu and using a new Superman film as the starting line, what can we expect from the upcoming film?
Who’s In It?
It’s always interesting to see who will get the chance to put on the suit. Will they go more for the look of Superman, or will they find an actor who can convey the wholesomeness of the character? Sometimes, they get both. The characters surrounding...

Longlegs’ Osgood “Oz” Perkins is remarkably even-keeled for a filmmaker who’s enjoying the finest reviews of his career. His Maika Monroe and Nicolas Cage-led horror-thriller has been the talk of the town for months now, as Neon’s marketing department has put together one of the more inspired promotional campaigns in recent memory. They’ve made Perkins’ fourth feature feel like a buzzy event film à la the work of his friend and collaborator, Jordan Peele, and the creepy procedural about an FBI agent’s (Monroe) self-actualizing pursuit of a Satanic serial killer (Cage) is more than worthy of that treatment. (Perkins played director Fynn Bachman in Peele’s Nope.)
Perkins’ Longlegs enters into theaters on Friday, joining Ti West’s MaXXXine, which bowed last weekend. The two genre pics share a rather interesting connection in that MaXXXine features a couple sequences involving the Psycho set on the Universal Studios backlot.

Beginning in March 2022, Ti West and Mia Goth have unfolded a decades-spanning saga with what’s commonly referred to as the “X Trilogy,” which of course kicked off with 1970s-set slasher X and continued with the 1918-set prequel Pearl and now the 1980s-set MaXXXine.
It’s of course extremely uncommon to get an entire trilogy of movies in just over two years, but what’s also incredibly unique about Ti West’s trilogy is that each film is a completely different beast altogether. The movies may not be massive box office hits but they’ve damn sure made their mark on pop culture, and they’ve even caught the attention of an all-time cinema great.

Picking up six years after the events of X, Maxine Minx has hit the big time as an adult entertainment star. Looking to make her start as a bonafide actress, she hits Hollywood — but California in 1985 is also the home of the eponymous serial killer, the Night Stalker. As he makes his mark on Western America, Maxine’s old wounds come back to the surface… and all is not as it seems.
When 1970s slasher romp X landed on screens, it was largely a hit with critics and viewers alike. The surprise of prequel Pearl already being in production only exacerbated the positive vibes, offering a completely difference perspective not only on West’s vision but also Goth’s horror queen chops. In addition to starring in Ti West’s 1970s-set slasher X, Scott Mescudi (aka Kid Cudi) was also an executive producer on the subsequent prequel Pearl and this year’s sequel MaXXXine, and the singer/actor has taken to Twitter this week to tease another collaboration with West.
Mescudi tweets, “Wait til u see what me and Ti West do next.”
We have no idea what Mescudi is referring to at this time, so it’s important to note here that it’s not necessarily even a horror project at all. While Ti West is primarily known as a horror filmmaker, making a name for himself with films including The House of the Devil, The Innkeepers, and The Sacrament, he’s also strayed from the genre. Of particular note, West directed the Western In a Valley of Violence back in 2016. Point being, it’s not a guarantee that West and...

Martin Scorsese is a longtime fan of indie filmmaker Ti West.
Scorsese penned a letter to the New York Times to applaud West’s “X” trilogy which recently concluded with “MaXXXine.” Mia Goth starred in all three films as both characters Maxine and Pearl, with each feature taking place in a different decade. West deployed the popular aesthetics for each respective era for the trio of films, as Scorsese explains.
According to the Oscar-winning filmmaker, West’s “X” films all embody a “different type of horror, related to different eras in American moviemaking.”
The first feature “X” is “the ’70s, the slasher era,” as Scorsese wrote. Meanwhile, prequel “Pearl” showcases the “’50s melodrama in vivid saturated color,” while “MaXXXine” captured the “’80s Hollywood, rancid, desperate” onscreen.
The films are “three linked stories set within three different moments in movie culture, reflecting back on the greater culture,” as Scorsese penned.

After the much-anticipated release of MaXXXine, Ti West’s trilogy is finally complete. The latest installment tries to expand the horizons set by its predecessors, X and Pearl, but falls short of grounding its ambition. Continuing the tradition but losing steam The first, X, is ‘the 70s, the slasher era’; Pearl is ’50s melodrama in vivid saturated color; MaXXXine is ’80s Hollywood, rancid, desperate.’ This quote from Martin Scorsese encapsulates the essence of each film in the trilogy. However, MaXXXine‘s attempt to honor this era feels more like an afterthought than a triumph. West and Goth’s fervent aim to represent different...

One of the standout scenes in director Ti West’s X and Pearl sequel MaXXXine (which is in theatres now) shows the character played by Mia Goth getting a life cast / head mold – which, as it turns out, is something Goth has had plenty of real-life experience with. Not only did she spend the day getting plaster spread across her face for the filming of that MaXXXine scene, but she also had to get a life cast done for the creation of the “old Pearl” makeup she wore in X, had another life cast done for the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe Blade reboot, and had a digital body scan done for Guillermo del Toro’s version of Frankenstein.
In a video breakdown of the MaXXXine life cast scene, Goth reminisced about her X life cast experience: “I did it for X when we were creating the mold for old Pearl,...

MaXXXine, the sequel to director Ti West‘s films Pearl and X, is now in theatres – and if you’re interested in getting some behind-the-scenes information on one of the scenes, Vanity Fair has just released a promo video in which West and franchise star Mia Goth break down the scene where Goth’s character Maxine Minx has an unpleasant experience while getting a life cast / head mold done. It’s an interesting video that has West and Goth discussing the scene, MaXXXine, and the overall franchise for twelve minutes. Check it out in the embed above!
MaXXXine was written and directed by West. Mia Goth reprises the role of X survivor Maxine Minx, a burlesque performer and adult film actress with the goal of being a star. The film has the following synopsis: In 1980s Hollywood, adult film star and aspiring actress Maxine Minx finally gets her big break.

It hasn't been a blockbuster year for horror at the box office in 2024, but A24 and director Ti West just delivered a solid little debut with "MaXXXine." Building off of the success of "X" and "Pearl" in 2022, West's trilogy centered on Mia Goth's Maxine Minx has come to a close on a high note: The latest entry opened higher than either of the previous films by a pretty significant margin. While that's still small potatoes in the grand scheme of things, a win is a win.
"MaXXXine" opened to $6.7 million domestically over the weekend, landing at number four on the charts, with "Inside Out 2" ($30.3 million) and "Despicable Me 4" ($75 million) owning the lion's share of the attention from moviegoers. But horror fans still turned out to see what West and Goth had cooked up, with the film pulling in another $1.1 million overseas for a $7.8 million global debut.

The end of the Maxxxine trilogy lands in theaters this weekend. The trilogy of horror films explores generational journies of starlets and women reaching for superstardom. How they find that success varies greatly, from infamy to adult films and even iconic roles in B-movies. Ti West and Mia Goth collaborated to write Pearl while waiting to shoot X, while West wrote each of the other stories. With that much control over the franchise, we’ve assembled nine movies that inspired the horror showcases.
The Movies That Influenced X The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)
The most obvious influence on X comes from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The 1974 horror classic not only broke the mold of what was possible in the genre. It also helped define a specific aesthetic that would be borrowed, recycled, and reused for years. Many grindhouse movies, including Ti West, Rob Zombie, and others, openly crib off The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

Ti West and Mia Goth complete their decade-hopping horror trilogy with MaXXXine, a sequel to both X and Pearl that’s now playing in theaters nationwide courtesy of A24.
A24 released MaXXXine in 2,450 theaters here in the United States over the weekend, with the final installment in Ti West’s trilogy scaring up $6.7 million in its domestic debut. At the worldwide box office, MaXXXine debuted to an impressive $7.8 million over the weekend.
Both of the previous films were released into theaters in 2022, with X opening to $4.2 million and Pearl opening to $3.1 million. That gives MaXXXine the highest opening out of the entire trilogy, more than doubling the domestic opening of the previous installment in the saga.
X finished its box office run with $14.7 million worldwide while Pearl made $9.8 million in total at the worldwide box office, and there’s a good chance MaXXXine will soon become the overall highest grossing movie in the trilogy.

In the world of Hollywood, many directors and filmmakers have come and gone, but only a few have managed to win the hearts of the audience with their distinct cinematic prowess. The best example of this statement would be Martin Scorsese, who not only revolutionized cinema but also brought forth a string of movies that even new-age directors cannot stop appreciating.

After three weekends of Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” dominating to become the biggest blockbuster of the year, another animated sequel took over the 4th of July weekend. Read on for the weekend box office report.
Universal released Illumination Entertainment’s animated sequel “Despicable Me 4,” once again starring Steve Carell as the voice of Gru, into 4,428 theaters on Wednesday. After making $27 million on Wednesday, and another $20.4 million on July 4, the franchise favorite earned another $75 million (estimated) over the three-day weekend for a five-day total of $122.6 million, including Wednesday and Thursday. With that, the “Minions” franchise holds three of the biggest Fourth of July openings and the biggest since “Minions: The Rise of Gru” opened with $107 million in 2022.
Even though reviews were mixed at best with 54% on Rotten Tomatoes, audiences rated it higher, going by its “A” CinemaScore.

As expected, Illumination Entertainment’s Despicable Me 4 had no problem claiming the top spot over this holiday weekend. Deadline reported that the film posted a strong – but not franchise record-setting $75 million (which isn’t far from what we predicted earlier this week). With the holiday gross, the film’s five-day total is a muscular $122.6 million. That’s the second biggest opening for one of the Despicable Me movies, but it pales compared to the Minions spin-off films, which both opened well north of $100 million on their opening weekends.
Notably, despite the common consensus that two family-oriented films would bite into each other’s box office this weekend, Pixar’s box office juggernaut, Inside Out 2, continued to hold steady with $33 million, only a 42% decline from last weekend. So far, it’s made an incredible $536 million domestically. A Quiet Place: Day One performed within franchise expectations, slipping 60% to $21 million, with...

The "Despicable Me" franchise now has more No. 1 box office debuts than any other animated franchise, having surpassed the previous record of five No. 1 movies established by "Shrek" and its sequels and spin-offs. Of the six "Shrek" and "Shrek"-adjacent movies released so far, "Puss in Boots: The Last Wish" was the only one not to debut in first place (and it still went on to become a box office hit).
"Despicable Me 4" arrived in theaters on Wednesday this week and is on track to gross $120 million over its five-day extended opening, per Deadline. Since shifting to acting a decade ago, Mia Goth has cemented herself as a modern-day scream queen and has earned major recognition for her performance in the X series. After joining forces with filmmaker Ti West, Goth headlined X and its prequel Pearl, in which she played the villain of the first film, and the third entry in the trilogy, MaXXXIne, has also opened to favorable reviews.
But despite enjoying an acclaimed filmography over the course of the last ten years, Goth still struggles with one aspect of the production process, which she detailed in a recent interview.

After taking on the tragic tale of the people’s princess, Elizabeth Debicki found just the part to shake things up.
The Golden Globe winner opened up about going from her critically-acclaimed performance on Netflix‘s The Crown to starring in MaXXXine, the concluding chapter of Ti West‘s X horror trilogy that is now playing in theaters.
“I shot this quite soon after wrapping on The Crown and I found it to be a very medicinal palate cleanser,” Debicki told Forbes.
She previously won a Golden Globe for her performance as the late Princess of Wales in seasons 5 and 6 of The Crown after taking over the role from Emma Corrin.
In MaXXXine, Debicki plays director Elizabeth Bender, who gives Maxine Minx (Mia Goth) her big break in the horror sequel The Puritan II. While fulfilling her dreams, the young starlet must outrun her sinister past while the Night Stalker preys on 1980s Los Angeles.

Ti West’s “MaXXXine” has slashed its way into theaters. And the third film in the trilogy that began with 2022’s “X” and continued with the prequel “Pearl,” is perhaps the installment most steeped in other movies. This is a movie where, when a character is threatening Maxine (Mia Goth), the porn star that survived the events of “X” and now, circa “MaXXXine” is struggling to make it in mainstream Hollywood in 1985, they send her a newspaper clipping with the headline: “The Texas Porn Star Massacre,” a direct reference to Tobe Hooper’s immortal “Texas Chain Saw Massacre.”
And that’s just the beginning of the metatextual delights that make “MaXXXine” so special. We thought that we’d talk about five of the movies that fundamentally inspired “MaXXXine.”
Since we’ll be talking about plot specifics, consider this your mild spoiler warning before we get into it.
