Fake or not, this felt real....
PerryAtTheMovies14 July 2024
7.8/10 (Definitely Recommend)

"Fly Me to the Moon" is a romanticized account of the Apollo 11 moon mission, and how they put a man in space. Despite the film's storytelling being primarily focused on a launch director (Tatum) and a marketing maven (Johansson), it truly pulls you into the overall story.

Scarlett Johansson and Woody Harrelson fit well into the story, but even after watching the film I'm still iffy about Channing Tatum's performance. For me he just seemed like a modern day guy who pops up in the 1960s and wears increasingly cliche "Star Trek" shirts especially when he wore yellow. Despite that that slightly ill feeling the overall chemistry of the cast was great. Tatum was really the only one who felt "out".

The cinematography along with the score and sets made it feel like the 1960s, but with a clean look. The combination of both archival footage and the modern film gave you the feeling that you were experiencing the Apollo 11 launch for the first time in your life. My heart was racing with every aspect despite the full knowledge that crew went up, stepped on the moon, and returned.

This film is definitely date night worthy as it's very much focused on the relationship between the two aforementioned work titles of Scar Jo and Channing Tatum, but it still meshes well with a historical aspect. The film also has rewatch-ability as I would watch it again.

Overall, there is a good amount to like about the film. The characters, the setting, and the editing are my top three. Definitely worthy of seeing at least once, and as stated it does make for a good date night movie too.

That's it for now. Thanks for taking time to read my review. Happy watching and enjoy the show!

The reviews feel disingenuous
pasmwut11 July 2024
This movie is NOT generic. At all. If the premise of faking the mood landing is not in this movie than yes it's a pretty generic rom com but because that's the entire movie I don't get how this is generic.

If you have a beating heart and sense of humor this movie will charm you. ScarJo is throwing 100 mph in every scene. She's outstanding. This is a signature performance in her catalog and really fleshes out what makes her 1 of 1. One down side is that Channing Tatum is very good in the movie but he's not on her level and I don't think anyone would argue that. Her scenes with Jim Rash (sneaky MVP) are all time great. They have some magic I hope they do more work together. I've always been found of his performance in Community and his screen play The Way Way Back.

The other surprise for me was how great Woody and ScarJo are together. That was the secret sauce of the movie. Not just their acting chemistry but the idea of a Nixon enforcer and fixer battling with this con artist type advertising saleswoman is beautiful stuff. It's really breathtaking to witness.

The other part of this movie that provides some fun for all ages is the stuff with the cat in the movie. This is such a cute and realistic use of a cat who just lingers around an area getting in the way just in the smallest way.

not bad, could've been better
stevencsmovies13 July 2024
When I saw the trailer for FLY ME TO THE MOON, I thought it looked like it would be fun, but I wasn't sure if it would be good. It is a movie taking place during the great space race of the 60s, where a shady government agent Moe (Woody Harrelson) hires the best marketing specialist Kelly (Scarlett Johansson) to publicize NASA to save their space program. She tries to work with the Apollo 11 launch director Cole (Channing Tatum), who is against the whole idea. The lines are blurred between acting and lying in this romance/comedy/political satire/historical drama. That's my main problem with this: it tries to be too many things, making the tone and pacing jarring for the audience. I didn't really feel the chemistry between the leads. I heard Chris Evans was going to be the lead. That would've been much better as him and "Scar-Jo" are good friends. Nothing against Channing, I just think he needed more to work with. It didn't feel like they were in the 60s: the costume designs were, but the way they spoke, not so much. Saying all of that, I still liked the fun ride. The side characters knew what kind of movie this was, especially Ray Romano and Jim Rash. The leads' backstories were good as well, even though I wish I had known a little earlier so I could have something to hang on to, character-wise. This was a perfectly charming crowd-pleaser that, to me, felt very much like a "studio-driven" movie. Original idea but somehow formulaic. FLY ME TO THE MOON is about how people will believe anything if Scarlett Johansson sells it to them. I still recommend seeing this "bit of fluff", as my uncle would say.

Generic film with a fun backdrop
ToastyToas8 July 2024
I was lucky enough to get an advanced screening of this film, and to be honest it was exactly what I was expecting.

The film for sure one of the better romantic comedy's of the recent years. Over the past few years it feels like these kinds of movies have been slowly dying so it's really nice for the genre to get fresh air. Though with that said the movie feels somewhat basic. It follows a similar formula to many other films of its kind. The whole movie feels like a template with a few modifications.

The film takes place with the backdrop of the space race which is something very unique about this movie. One of the best things the movie does is how it creates this fake story that feels kinda plausible.

Channing Tatum and Scarlet Johansson! Both standout actors. Neither of their roles are very deep or require much emotion, but they both manage to play them beautifully. The chemistry they share is amazing and I would totally be down to see another movie with them.

Good comedy, good drama, super visuals
donmurray299 July 2024
Giving this an 7.5/10 rating

Easy preview and it's a good watch, I saw it on Superscreen at Cineworld, and it's a lovely, lovely looking film, crazy story, that is for sure, and you must take it all with a grain of salt, or maybe sugar.

Greg Berlanti, makes everything look good, this film does look like you could eat it, I hope he does animation next, or James Bond??? Scarlett Johansson, Channing Tatum and a very sinister but jolly Woody Harrelson are on form here, no messing about. Tatum, is very stoic, Johansson, is the free spirit of the film, and is where the laughs come from.

NASA is a place of hard work and joy, back in the 1960'2 as they are fuelled by 'Cold War' paranoia, and must beat the Russians, first. That is the real driving force and the romance is second, but both work well hand in hand thanks to the writing trio of Keenan Flynn, Rose Gilroy and Bill Kirstein.

It's a good evenings worth in the cinema, it's so visual that watching this at home or laptop or small screen, is a waste of time, just warning you, it's like 80 percent of films now.

Fellas, You Might Want To Scrap This Launch, But Stay Strapped In And Prepare For Liftoff! This Is An Original Romcom Worth Seeing In The Theater!
RightOnDaddio7 July 2024
I did not want to see this movie. This was a secret screening of the film, so the audience had no idea what was coming on in the theater beforehand. We only knew what it would be once the title splashed across the screen.

I had my suspects, but I was hoping it would not be this.

I just didn't want to see it. Had no interest. And I knew how long it was and I didn't want to sit through it.

I physically reacted with disappointment inside the theater when I saw this was it.

My feelings were palpable.

But I'm cheap. And i can be lazy. I don't want to lose money on this deal and I'm not asking for my money back. I've never walked out of a film, ever.

So, stuck as I was, I strapped myself in much like the astronauts in this movie.

I previously stated all this hatred to say that even as an unwilling participant in this, I actually kinda-sorta liked it when it was all over.

Sorta-kinda.

A little bit.

Don't get too carried away.

So, if a dude like me, who had absolutely no plans of ever seeing this in the theater (or even ever!) or even paying his own money to do so can find a granule of enjoyment here, than the masses that do want to see this are going to be, yes, I'm going to say it... Over the moon.

This is not a bad movie.

Not at all.

How could it be?

Look at the cast!

Channing Tatum.

Scarjo!

Woody Harrelson.

And speaking of looks, just look at it!

Wow.

It is totally the 1960's.

This whole movie just looks amazing.

You are transported to that time and place most certainly. And outer space as well.

And there's a cute black kitty cat!

Oh, I love and adore black cats!

They are one of my favorite things on this planet!

I found myself, yes, me, laughing out loud inside the theater, genuine belly laughter a few times.

I'm for real! Me!

These three (Tatum, Johansson, and Harrelson) are wonderful and believable in their roles.

Even now as I write this, I realize how much I liked this film and how powerful its underlying message really is.

Men can fail.

But they have to try again. Even when the results prior were catastrophic.

A woman can bring that man strength and inspire him to go farther.

A good man can make a better woman too.

And a black cat is not bad luck.

They're beautiful, loyal and fun.

Strap yourselves in.

Prepare for liftoff and some laughs.

Time has no meaning in space.

Felt very fresh

I had the chance to see Fly Me to the Moon at a mystery screening, and it was a delightful surprise! Channing Tatum and Scarlett Johansson deliver fantastic performances in this unique mix of comedy and drama. The film takes a fresh approach to the Apollo 11 mission, focusing on a marketing specialist hired to make America fall in love with going to space and secure political support. The story is both entertaining and heartfelt, with standout performances from Woody Harrelson and Ray Romano. The cast is stellar, and the film strikes a perfect balance between humor and emotion. If you love space and history, this is a must-watch. I highly recommend it!

Well acted and charmingly funny, but not groundbreaking
shashank_150117 July 2024
The idea that the Moon landing of 1969 was faked using astronauts in a Hollywood studio has been a conspiracy theory for decades. This movie takes a comical swipe on these rumors.

Starring Johansson, Tatum & Harrelson, Fly me to the Moon fictionally describes the times at NASA during 1960s when Apollo 11 was launched successfully into space. Kelly Jones, a journalist hired by the white house as a public relation expert in order to generate funds for Apollo missions when the whole country was distracted towards Vietnam War. Things get messy when she is asked to fake the mission by filming the moon landing that will be broadcasted to the whole world in case the mission fails. Her fling with NASA's launch director Cole Davis doesn't helps her at all in this top secret mission.

The film rightly focusses on the importance of Apollo 11 mission to each and everyone at NASA especially to Cole Davis played by Tatum. Johansson is also superb as deliciously minxy Kelly Jones. Harrelson as always nails the role of bullish White house official Moe Berkus.

The sizzling chemistry and timing of the lead makes it a good entertainer which is about 20 minutes too long.

An heartfelt story, We need more of those!
quentmach12 July 2024
I was actually surprised I liked it. I'm not big on love story and I was scared it would be 99% of the movie. Boy was I wrong ! First of all, the images are beautiful, that colorimetry is stunning! The story makes sense and nothing fell forced at all (which is rare nowadays). The actor is game is incredible and the direction is on point! The development of characters was on point and it was smooth all along. The choice of scenes, of cameo (no spoilers!) was really good. I didn't experience the moon la ding as I'm too young for that but it fell like I was living it! My heart was pounding like it never had before and I was surprised! Highly recommended!

Shoot the Moon!
OscarDude-com8 July 2024
"Fly Me to the Moon" is an enjoyable romantic comedy that takes a clever twist on the Apollo 11 mission to put the first man on the moon. Set during the first half of 1969, it pairs Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum in an unlikely but captivating duo.

Johansson's portrayal of Kelly Jones, a con woman turned advertising exec, steals the spotlight. She's delightful, wily, and always effervescent. Whether she's scheming or sharing a moment with Tatum, Johansson commands every scene she's in. And she's in most of the scenes.

Tatum plays Cole Davis, the straight-faced NASA launch director. Unfortunately, his character seems to have only one gear. He seems stuck in a perpetual state of anger, without much indication why. While Tatum's performance is solid, the lack of depth leaves us wondering why he's always on edge.

The film hinges on the chemistry between Johansson and Tatum. Surprisingly, it works. Their sparring match-reminiscent of classic romantic comedies of days gone by-adds charm and tension. The chemistry between them feels authentic, but the conflict between them seems contrived.

In a supporting role, Jim Rash plays a flamboyant commercial director charged with filming a fake moon landing. Initially, it looks like the character will be a two-dimensional caricature, but as the story unfolds, he becomes one of the film's most interesting characters. His evolution keeps the audience engaged late in the movie when the story starts to drag. The film is probably 30 minutes longer than it needs to be.

For those who lived through the '60s, the archival news footage woven into the movie adds an extra layer of nostalgia. It's a nod to history and a reminder of the era's significance.

"Fly Me to the Moon" is good entertainment, but not groundbreaking. The premise, a fresh take on Apollo 11, may be ridiculous, but it's fun if you don't overthink it. It's smart, but not too smart. It's silly, but not too silly.

The bottom line: "Fly Me to the Moon" takes flight with Johansson's charisma, even if it doesn't reach lunar heights. This is something that we haven't seen in a while: a smart romantic comedy. It's a date movie worth watching even if you don't have a date.

What if the fake moon landing was faked?
Lomax34312 July 2024
Scarlett Johannson is a confidence trickster who can sell anything to anyone. Naturally, she ends up in advertising, and is recruited to "sell" the moon programme to Congress, the US public, and anyone else willing to open their wallet. Quite why the moon programme needed such a hard sell isn't explained, but this isn't the sort of film where logic is of primary importance.

Channing Tatum is the dedicated but naive NASA flight commander who's alternately charmed by Johannson and appalled at her machinations. She, in turn, is appalled by Woody Harrelson (clearly having a ball playing a sinister government fixer) who insists on a contingency plan of filming a fake moon landing in case the real one goes wrong.

She recruits Jim Rash (also having a ball as an outrageously camp and self-centred director) and they set up in a disused hangar on the Cape Canaveral site. What could possibly go wrong?

Conspiracy nuts can get over themselves at this point. This film is a comedy, and gives us several laugh-out-loud moments and a nice, feel-good ending.

The cat was great, too.

Over The Moon In fun
rgkarim12 July 2024
Likes:

Decent Pacing

Good Acting

A Fun Relationship

Awesome Immersion Factors

Decent Character Development

Cute

Fun Drama With A Science Twist

Witty At Times

Good Balance Of Characters And Elements

Summary A hybrid movie such as this is very concerning for potentially being too much in one movie, but Fly Me To The Moon managed to do something with the combination. Berlanti's work is a very cute and fun movie that manages to take a very divided subject and turn it into a cushioned and comfortable tale with a lot of heart and quality entertainment components. For fans like me who love a good portal back in time, this film accomplishes the goal of bringing us back to the 1960s during the pinnacle Space Race years. The cars, the fashion, the office settings, and the technology are recreated to have that old-world sheen; with the exception of a few pieces that maintain their modern look. A fantastic cast makes this movie even more of an enjoyment, becoming a supporting pillar for the tale and somehow juggling all the directions into a coherent drive toward the ultimate goal. Harrelson is pretty much Harrelson, a character that is one part cocky wit and one part imposing personality whose tone makes for a good "antagonistic" force to push the tale. Tatum surprised me a bit with this role, managing to pull together a fun rom-com movie with a little more heart and soul than some of his other parts in the past. I had fun following him, despite a few slip-ups and still not quite having the full punch that other actors might have had. Finally, Johansson's acting is the one going over the moon for this reviewer, a stellar blend of comedy, vulnerability, and drive that makes for a very engaging character with incredible chemistry with all the other groups and a spectrum of talents she brings to the mix.

Aesthetics and acting aside, the movie has a good entertaining pace as the three story arcs sort of take off together toward the stars. It's a fun perspective to watch how Apollo 11 came to life from the angle of a public relations officer and see the adventures that may or may not have happened. There are fun relationships, including the main one between the leads, with decent character development that helps take this Hallmark relationship to a level I enjoyed with more interest and excitement. This character development balances well with the other plot elements and does not go too far down tangents to interrupt the overall goal of the Apollo 11 mission. Some added wit with good pacing only further supported the fun of this movie and should be very entertaining for the majority of the audience.

DISLIKES:

Predictable

Missing Some Of The Dramatic Edge

Some Plot Gaps

Some More Involvement with Other groups

Needs A Bit More Unique Factor

A Bit Too Loose At Times With The Background Information.

Summary: However, where the movie may be lacking for some comes from perhaps spreading their hand too thin with all the genres. The movie is entertaining, but it's a predictable tale for the most part and missing that edge and deep dives that historical event films thrive on. While it is nice not being exposed to hyper-dramatic flair, the movie could have used a little more time and development with drama that didn't feel so background information. The details became a tad loose, key moments and obstacles sort of hurdled over without so much as a second look, lost in background shots and dialogue. Other groups and characters needed some investment in time, secondary characters showing potential stories of intrigue that were degraded to cute pictures and shots of a flirty smile and very little more. I felt there were some fairly wide plot gaps, or at least plot holes, that were a tad irritating, but the entertainment factor of this movie buffs things out for the time being. Overall, the movie just feels a little less unique or standing out and may become lost given the limited advertising of this movie outside of theaters and cable ads, resulting in a perception it may be too mundane to give a shot.

THE VERDICT: Fly Me To The Moon surprised me with how much fun I had from this take on the space program. With an engaging pace to drive solid acting, a cute relationship, fun plot elements, and a spread of genres, it's going to be very enjoyable I feel for a lot of audiences. While you'll have to suspend reality and your conspiracy, the movie turned out to be cute and delightful to watch as I returned to a segment of the 1960s. Romance, drama, comedy, and a science/historical plot await everyone who gives it a shot. Is it unique? Not really. The tale is predictable and there is a lack of true dramatic flair and obstacles that movies like Apollo 13 did so well when it came to historical drama. That, with still some lower character development and involvement might lead this feeling way too thin to be the deep investment fans of drama movies enjoy in their series. Still, it's fun and worth a shot as a fun outing to the movies if you are looking for something to do, but definitely worth viewing at home if you get the chance.

My scores are:

Comedy/Romance: 7.5 Movie Overall: 6.0-6.5.

thomasrakewell13 July 2024
This film has nothing to say and there is no reason to exist. It's sort of a romcom but it's not very romantic. It's sort of a comedy but not really. It's kind of about a conspiracy theory but only slightly and even then not really. It pulls its punches, doesn't know what it is, and doesn't ultimately have any point to it. It's more amusing than actually funny. It has 2 characters that are meant to fall in love but you won't feel it. It feels like someone told ChatGPT to "make a generic movie" and it shoved all the ingredients together.

I got bored watching it. It's fun enough, it passes the time, but I also felt like I wanted to avoid watching films ever again if this is what they are going to be like.

A nice romantic comedy for space buffs
frizzardi21 July 2024
I wasn't interested in this movie at first, but then I saw a brief clip on TV and this led to me to watch the trailer.

I still wasn't convinced - I've always considered Tatum to be too bland in all the movies he's starred in - but there was literally nothing else in the theatres, so we gave it a try.

Fly Me to the Moon was a nice surprise right from the start: smart dialogue, quick pacing, excellent acting and an interesting plot.

The movie is mostly carried by Johansson, but Harrelson and Rash deserve honorable mentions. Tatum was not as bland as I expected - also his character is a space nerd and this fit rather well with his initial awkwardness when dealing with Johansson.

Ok, I admit - I'm a space nerd too, and the scenes of the liftoff of the Apollo 11 move me every time.

We saw this movie on the day of the 55th anniversary of the moon landing, and on a night with a full moon, which added to the movie magic.

Conspiracy Theory Handled
stevendbeard12 July 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I saw Fly Me to the Moon, starring Scarlett Johansson-just about any Marvel movie, We Bought a Zoo; Channing Tatum-the Magic Mike movies, White House Down; Jim Rash-Home Sweet Home Alabama, Community_tv and Woody Harrelson-the Venom movies, War For the Planet of the Apes.

This movie is about the Apollo 11 space mission to land on the moon in the late 1960's. It's also a comedy and a rom com. Scarlett plays a marketing genius that is hired by Woody-a government agent that works for the President-to help with the public image of NASA. America was in a race with Russia to get to the moon and the President wanted to have a win. Channing is the launch director of the mission-and love interest to Scarlett-so they disagree on lots of things, as they usually do in rom coms, before falling for each other. When Woody wants Scarlett to film a fake moon landing-in case something goes wrong on the real one-she hesitates at first, because of Channing, but she is forced by Woody to do it. Jim is the director of the fake film and Woody wants to use the fake film, no matter what happens on the mission, just to hedge all his bets. The conspiracy theory about the moon landing being faked is handled beautifully in the movie.

It's rated PG-13 for language and smoking and has a running time of 2 hours & 12 minutes.

I enjoyed it and it would be a good one to stream.

Not great but definitely good, very good
jmccrmck-6517215 July 2024
A romantic comedy, check , the lead characters a tad stereotyped, check, overly long as so many movies these days are , check. Art direction, character development, a pretty seamless narrative arc and great performances by , guess who, Scarlett Johansson, Woody Harrelson and Ray Romano check. Check. Check. And. Check. It is just plain and simple very entertaining and come on , lots of movies these days fail on that score. But the kicker for me, and maybe I was a little bit thick, is by the second half of the movie when I thought it was overly long I saw that the whole thing is satire and that, in the end and at the ending is what makes this movie such a blast. I was laughing at jokes others in the theater weren't getting. And some patrons were chanting 'USA . . . USA . . .USA. At the ending. They clearly weren't getting the joke but they liked it too. The movie delivers on so many levels, Glad I saw it and enjoyed more than most movies I see..

🌕The Space Race to the Moon🌕
Just Got Out of a Screening of Fly Me To The Moon.

Was The Moon Landing Fake? Well this Film Certainly Jabs at the Viewers a Few Times with Certain Bits Of Dialogue. Besides, the USA Needs to show the World that Russia was Beat to it.

Elements -

💄 - We Have Scarlett Johansson as Kelly, she's the Con Artist/Can Get Out of Almost Any Situation Element. And also Has Some Comedic Moments with Great Comedic Timing in the Film.

🇺🇲 - Channing Tatum as Cole, he's on the Massive Team at the Headquarters helping Set Up and watching the Actual Attempt before "other news" by Kelly Comes into Play.

😎 - Woody Harrelson as the "Sees Everything" Agent, Moe Berkus. Lol he was such an excellent element of the film and has a few "Jabs at the Audience" lines to make you think/and or question the real life counterpart.

💐 - Jim Rash adds even more Comedic Moments to the Whole Thing.

📺🚀 - All of the Other Performances were great, they all had that 1960's feel and look and it all Lended to the film Overall.

😺 - The Cat, that has a Fun Part in the Film. What a Performance.

💃- It has the 1960's Wardrobe, Cars and Props all well done.

🎵 - It has some 1960's Songs to Keep the Vibe Authentic.

🎥 - Cinematography was Gorgeous, it had this Bright Crystal Sheen to it 🔮. Tons of well Framed Shots, Showing the Scale of the NASA Building & Silo.

🥊 - Jabs at the Audience Lines, here's a few(roughly quoted)

💬 - Kelly - "The Truth is Still the Truth even if Nobody Believes it, and a Lie is Still a Lie even if Everybody Believes it".

💬 - Moe Berkus - (To Kelly ) "Unless You Ever, Tell Anyone That Project Artemis was Real and the Moon Landing Was Fake" That Could Mean Nobody can know that Project Artemis, a Fake moon Landing Project, is a thing or it Could Actually Mean = 😌

💬 - Cole - "The Russians are Saying We Shot the Whole Thing on a Soundstage"

Overall, So, Did the USA go there or what? Or did they sort of Go There but Not Really? Q. Did the United States Really Go to the Moon? A. Yes, they did. But Conspiracies about this Topic Sure are Stimulating and Exciting. Anyway, Go to the Cinema, it's such a Fun Watch.

Apollo as a romcom hero
dromasca16 July 2024
The Apollo 11 mission and mankind's first steps on another celestial body is probably the most significant event I have witnessed, thanks to live television, in my lifetime. It is not surprising that the first landing of a human crew has already spawned a cinematic genre, with quite a few productions in different formats - documentaries, feature films, television series. Sub-genres did not take long to appear. In addition to biographical films and space dramas, there have also been comedies and films that propagate or - on the contrary - satirize conspiracy theories related to the 1969 space mission. 'Fly Me to the Moon', the 2024 film directed by Greg Berlanti belongs to these last two sub-genres, but it is first and foremost a romantic comedy. For Berlanti, who is best known as a producer and takes on directing duties about once a decade, this is the first big-budget film he's directed. Depending on the expectations of each viewer, 'Fly Me to the Moon' is likely to appeal to many viewers looking for a romantic comedy or summer entertainment, but also to be disliked by those expecting a movie that strictly adheres to the history of the Apollo missions.

Every romantic comedy tells a story about a boy and a girl. The boy is Cole Davis, the head of the Apollo 11 program. The character is inspired by Deke Slayton, a former pilot in the Korea war, test pilot and candidate for the first flights of the Mercury program, who was turned down at the last minute for medical reasons and became the crew chief of the Apollo astronauts. He's super-serious, super-professional, his life is his job (at least until he meets the girl), and he's superstitious about black cats (justifiably so, we'll see). The girl, Kelly Jones, is a completely imaginary character. Beautiful and elegant (her wardrobe is a veritable collection of 60s fashion), she is a master of communication and advertising. A mysterious head of government services hires her to create the PR campaign in favor of the program, with the aim of countering Soviet propaganda but also - or primarily - to ensure continued funding. The American-Soviet race for the Moon cannot be lost. And if success does not happen in reality, then it must be simulated and filmed as if it happened. Conspiracy theory confirmed? Not really, let's not forget the c... word in the expression 'romantic comedy'.

The romantic side is especially supported by Scarlett Johansson, whose character conquers everyone who sees and hears her, less, sometimes, the one she falls in love with. The roles are created in such a way that the two represent a couple that has no chance of working. On screen, it's pretty much the same and the main fault in my opinion is the casting of Channing Tatum in a role for which he is so suitable that at no point can we believe that he can also be in love. On the other hand, Woody Harrelson creates a character that evolves from being a cynical and sinister manipulator to one of those legendary hat-and-umbrella spy bosses in English movies. To the list of acting that I liked, I'll add Anna Garcia, Kelly's slightly plump and funny assistant, who warns her boss that nothing good can come out by working for Richard Nixon. Actually, a love story came out for the characters, even if not very convincing. One of the hit comedies of the summer came out for viewers, filmed under the luminous Florida sun. Without being disrespectful, 'Fly Me to the Moon' is also a satire of the Apollo program and its people, conspiracy theories and films dedicated to the subject. The only people who might be upset would be Apollo program fans who would take the movie too seriously. Be warned!

Fun story and nice rom com

A nice fun film that won't demand to much from you as you watch it. A neat little story that takes a well known conspiracy theory and works it into the Appolo 11 moon landing. No spoilers here as this should be clear to anyone who's seen the trailer. Nice script, real star quality acting by the actors and nicely directed all make this into an excellent rom com that will make for a fun viewing experience. If you absolutely demand art house film experience with only realism allowed. This movie won't be for you. For everyone else, enjoy it on its own terms and don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

Two Good Stories Not Well Integrated
ARTaylor18 July 2024
It's really two good movies put together that don't really mesh well. One is a standard rom-com set against the Apollo 11 launch. The other is a fun look at the supposedly fictional fake moon landing. Each is well done and interesting on its own, but they're not integrated well.

There's nothing about the rom-com story that is all that new. In fact, all the characters are pretty standard for stories like this.

It's the faked landing story that's the real meat of the story. I wish this was the entire movie and not just something they introduced in the second half.

All of the actors are good and well cast. The standouts are Channing Tatum as the overly serious NASA guy and Scarlett Johansson as the wily con-artist turned media specialist. They may not be Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn, but they play well off each other. They're at their most fun one-upping each other, though Kelly is often played as too smug.

Ray Romano and Woody Harrelson are great in their supporting roles. Romano has some of the more heartfelt moments. Harrelson has some of the funniest. Of course, it's Jim Rash as the self-absorbed film director who steals the movie. He upstages everyone every time he's on screen.

The film looks good. The stuff film at the actual Cape Canaveral is gorgeous, and the classic buildings are shot with plenty of reverence. The launch itself looks great, even if it doesn't quite match the spectacle of 1995's Apollo 13.

It's a good movie for what it is. It's entertaining and well-made. But it would've been better if the two stories were more integrated or if it was split into two separate movies.

Endearing Conspiracy/Rom-Com/Drama
Pairic7 July 2024
Fly Me to the Moon: A Romantic Comedy/Drama which deals with the filming of a fake moon landing as a beta option in case things go wrong. Kelly Jones (Scarlett Johansson) is an ace marketing executive but she has a skeleton in her closet and Deep State operative Moe Berkus uses this to blackmail her into fixing NASA;s public image. This causes tension with Apollo 11 Mission Director Cole Davis (Channing Tatum). Her tactics sometimes alienate him but there is a chemistry developing between them. A bit like the Rock Hudson and Doris Day movies. The dark shadow of the deaths of the Apollo 1 astronauts hangs over this film though. When problems develop regarding the mission, Moe comes up with the idea of faking the moon landing. He again applies pressure on Kelly and she hires a flamboyant temperamental commercial director to make the fake. Johansson is wonderful as Kelly, conning politicians into continuing support for the project, adopting any accent which is necessary, hiring actors to stand in for Davis and other engineers when they refuse to be interviewed. Tatum projects a more serious Davis, he tends a memorial to the Apollo 1 astronauts, the Apollo 11 is his life and a fitting tribute to the dead astronauts. There is a crucial scene where he clashes with a TV interviewer over the fatal mission. He does have his comic moments though. Woody Harrelson plays Berkus as the consummate Man In Black, indeed he supplies Kelly with a small army of Men In Black as actors, guards and gophers. He is comical yet threatening, you really believe that he would have people killed to keep a secret. Jim Rash excels himself as Lance Vespertine, the camp temperamental director who fills in for the role conspiracy theorists allege was played by Stanley Kubrick. And he is just as demanding as Stan, take after take. It would be a spoiler to tell any more about how the plot develops but I'm sure you will enjoy this serious comedy. Directed by Greg Berlanti from a screenplay by Rose Gilroy. 8/10.

Fly Me to The Moon
jrwfzkknj8 July 2024
If you were expecting a deep dive into moon landing conspiracies, Fly Me to the Moon will surprise you-in the best possible way. Despite the misleading trailers, this film is not a conspiracy thriller but an endearing romantic comedy that delivers plenty of laughs and clever period jokes.

Scarlett Johansson shines, bringing a delightful charm to her role that adds layers to the film. Her performance is the movie's heartbeat, making the romantic and humorous moments equally compelling.

Woody Harrelson gives a chillingly sinister performance, leaving viewers on edge. But what might be even more unsettling is Channing Tatum's wardrobe choice - a vest under a knitted shirt-that will surely stick in your memory.

However, it's disappointing to see Ray Romano relegated to a minor role that feels more like his character from Everybody Loves Raymond rather than showcasing the depth he displayed in The Irishman. His talent seems underutilised in a part that doesn't match the film's overall tone.

Overall, Fly Me to the Moon is an enjoyable romp filled with good humour and fun.

An entertaing genre mix with a standout performance by Scarlett Johansson.
cedricdumler11 July 2024
Scarlett Johansson triumphantly returns to Hollywood, delivering a Doris Day-esque performance that's irresistibly sexy, charming, and delightfully playful. Her character brings a nostalgic yet refreshing energy to the film. Scarlett's ability to effortlessly switch between comedic timing, dramatic intensity and alluring wit still remains unmatched in Hollywood.

Channing Tatum provides strong support with his earnest portrayal, while legend Woody Harrelson fully commits to his humorous side. Their combined efforts keep the film afloat and engaging despite an all over the place tone.

The reference to the unbreakable conspiracy theory that the moon landing was merely a staging (possibly even by Stanley Kubrick) is repeatedly established through smug dialog and ironic, playful absurdities. At the same time, Gilroy screenplay efficiently generates tension through this story element, as it threatens to drive a wedge between the main characters.

Screwball comedy, marketing satire, conspiracy thriller and space drama. Fly Me to the Moon is an ambitious film that juggles multiple genres. Allthough that causes some tonal issues and leaves it a bit spread thin in the end, the film never ceases to entertain.

High production value, sparkling costume design, beautiful cinematography and a captivating and spirited on screen-duo make up for an engaging watch.

I would fly to the moon with Channing Tatum anyday!
Parsa-Eshtelaq17 July 2024
"Fly me to the Moon" is a well made Rom-Com movie that has been greatly casted with Channing Tatum (Cole Davis) as the male lead and Scarlett Johansson (Kelly Jones) as the female lead. While not forgetting the casting of Woody Harrelson (Moe Berkus).

The movie picks up about the whole "First to the moon" race back in the 1960-1970's and it delivers without a doubt on that front. But this being a rom-com, while having small kicks of drama and seriousness this movie lacks the final touch to make it fully enjoyable.

I kinda want to compare it to another rom-com released earlier this summer in "The Fall Guy", where we have another duo of lovers with an end goal of finishing a movie. In this movie its about sending a rocket to the moon. These rom-com movies can't make me give them anymore than 7.

But nonetheless it delivers some great acting from Scarlett Johansson and I personally would've wished for more Channing Tatum in this movie... he kinda gets pushed to the side.

The movie delivers with the whole 70's design and costumes.

There is some great cinematopgraphy and a well produced score.

But the movie lacks a bit in different places but still deliveres a good final product... Therefore I give it a 7.

Fly Me to the Moon
CinemaSerf10 July 2024
"Cole Davis" (Channing Tatum) is the launch director at Cape Canaveral and is charged with getting the Apollo 11 mission to the moon (and back!). Thing is, with the Vietnam war in full swing the public have rather lost interest in the space race with the USSR. Presidential adviser "Moe" (Woody Harrelson) hits on the idea of bringing in marketing specialist "Kelly" (Scarlett Johansson) to spruce things up and get the public - and the US Senate - more engaged with the project before it runs out of money and impetus. She's pushy and brassy and "Cole" hates her! Thing is, though, he also starts to realise that she's not half bad at the hoodwinking game and seems to be making some headway engaging sponsors and senators alike with the aspirations of Messrs. Armstrong and Aldrin to set foot in the Sea of Tranquility. With public interest piqued, "Moe" realises that the last thing they need is a flop, so he tells "Kelly" to create a moonscape and get in her favourite director - "Lance Vespertine" (Jim Rash doing his best Stanley Tucci) to essentially make their own, terrestrial, version of the landings that can be shown to the public should the worst case scenario actually occur. With her and "Cole" becoming closer and the launch date now imminent, it's soon clear that this isn't just a contingency plan - and that might finally present the unflappable "Kelly" with a moral dilemma she can't easily shrug off. What to do? It's quite entertaining, this, with Johansson clearly enjoying herself playing a myriad of parts within her character and there's a decent spark with the better than usual Tatum as the story swipes at politics (largely thanks to a playfully devious effort from Harrelson) and advertising whilst we learn that she is not quite the woman she seems to be. At times the writing is quite funny and the whole thing offers lunar conspiracy theorists (and the disbelieving Soviets) the perfect opportunity for the mother of wet dreams. There's plenty of rocket photography and though maybe just twenty minutes too long, this is one of Apple's better and more creative efforts. You just have to love that mischievous black cat at the end!
