This weekend’s biggest theatrical release was the novel-based romantic drama “It Ends with Us,” starring Blake Lively, taking on the seemingly unstoppable “Deadpool and Wolverine” juggernaut. Read on for the weekend box office report.
Although Lively’s movie did very well, better than some expected, “Deadpool and Wolverine” stayed on top for a third weekend in a row with $54.2 million, down just 44% to bring its domestic total to $494.3 million. Marvel Studios’ latest is just one or two days away from hitting the $500 million milestone, a benchmark achieved by a mere 21 movies — see the complete list.
The Ryan Reynolds–Hugh Jackman blockbuster grossed another $57.8 million internationally this weekend for an overseas total of $535.2 million, and sure enough, it crossed the $1 billion mark globally, remaining the second-biggest blockbuster of 2024. Another landmark of note is the $78 million the movie has made on global IMAX screens, divided at $41.3 million domestic and $36.7 million international.

Matt Damon and Casey Affleck have both won Oscars for Massachusetts-set movies; Damon for writing “Good Will Hunting” with Casey’s brother Ben, and Casey for acting in the tragic drama “Manchester by the Sea.” Damon and the Afflecks’ latest Boston-set team-up, heist comedy “The Instigators,” is unlikely to win them any additional gold, but it’s a fun ride nevertheless.
Damon — reuniting with his “Bourne Identity” director Doug Liman — stars as Rory, a financially strapped middle-aged man who decides to give heisting a shot. He teams up with Cobby for some scores, and then gets his therapist Donna (Academy Award nominee Hong Chau) involved against her will. How does that make her feel? Not good! The cast also includes heavy hitters like Michael Stuhlbarg, Paul Walter Hauser, Ving Rhames, Alfred Molina, and Rob Gronkowski. Yes, this movie is so Boston that Gronk is in it. “The Instigators” is now...

Overall streaming numbers for July 8-14 came down a fair amount from the record-breaking previous week. HBO’s House of the Dragon, however, was virtually even with its prior viewing total — which was good enough to move it to the top spot for the first time.
House of the Dragon amassed 1.27 billion minutes of viewing on Max (not including viewing on HBO’s cable channels), just a smidge below the 1.3 billion it had the week before. With the two titles ahead of it the previous week, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F and Suits, each falling by significant amounts, the HBO show moved up to No. 1.
Suits fell by 28 percent week-to-week to 1.07 billion minutes of viewing on Netflix and Peacock, which was good for third place overall, slightly behind Bluey (1.08 billion minutes on Disney+) and just ahead of The Boys (1.05 billion for Prime Video), which had its fifth consecutive week over the billion-minute mark.

Every time I watch a Despicable Me film, it just makes me wonder if life would be really simple if we were as mindless as the minions. But then you look at Gru and realize that maybe some things are worth fighting for, like your place in this world. I mean, he is weak, talentless, and sometimes even dumb, yet he wants to become the number one villain in the world. In short, Gru is an inspiration. A beacon of hope who motivates us to not give up no matter how pathetic we are. Sorry, Gru, it wasn’t personal. But these are a few of the character traits that I felt were missing in Despicable Me 4. And even though it was fun, it wasn’t very impactful. Or maybe it was just me who expected more. So, without further ado, let’s explore the events of the film...

The Minions have cemented their status as cultural icons, so it came as no surprise that for the premiere of Illumination’s ‘Despicable Me 4,’ Universal Pictures went all out. From gracing the yellow carpet to appearing on mobile billboards around New York City, these highlighter-yellow characters were at the forefront of creating buzz. Here are some highlights of how Universal Pictures leveraged these beloved characters. Premiere Highlight Showcases Iconic Characters At the event, talent and filmmakers navigated a yellow carpet, taking photos with life-size Minion characters. Paramount is the big winner in home viewing at the moment on VOD platforms and at Netflix. The just-released “A Quiet Place: Day One” is #1 at both iTunes (ranking by transactions) and Fandango (by revenue), adding to its success after grossing $137 million in domestic box office so far.
Meantime, Paramount-produced films currently take three of the top five spots on Netflix’s movie top 10, led by Tom Cruise in two “Jack Reacher” movies, “Never Go Back” at #1 and the original at #5. #2 right now is “Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie,” an offshoot of Paramount-owned Nickelodeon’s “SpongeBob SquarePants” empire, which earlier led the list.
Like Sony, Paramount is happy to take Netflix’s money even if it means removing content from their in-house streamer, Paramount+. The “Jack Reacher” movies are not abnormal — all studios other than Disney have some licensing output deal with the streaming leader. But taking homegrown originals — “Saving Bikini Bottom,...

"Deadpool & Wolverine" is not the best written Marvel movie -- in fact, it's not even the best "Deadpool" movie. But what this cameo and reference delivery system of a movie has going on for it is a true love and appreciation for the superhero movie genre and its history. Rather than a teaser for Deadpool's role in the MCU moving forward, or a bunch of table setting for Marvel's future, this is more of a goodbye to the 20th Century Fox Marvel movies.
This extends to beloved movies like the original "X-Men" and "Blade," but also to failures like "Fantastic Four" and "Elektra," and even the movies that never got made. That's how we get what is the best character in the movie, and one of the greatest cameos in a superhero movie ever: Channing Tatum as Gambit. This is more than just bringing back an actor to reprise a beloved role years later,...

Following two record-breaking weekends in theaters, Deadpool & Wolverine's cast and crew are finally free to talk spoilers! In a lengthy interview with Variety, director Shawn Levy started by revealing how Wesley Snipes' return as Blade happened.
Crediting Ryan Reynolds with reaching out to the actor, the filmmaker said it came down to the desire to "explore themes of legacy, characters and their endings" and give the Daywalker the send-off he never received.
He added, "Wesley has not played Blade in a long time. He and Ryan have not been in close touch in a very long time. But we made clear to Wesley that this was not going for a joke. This was out of reverence for his legacy as this iconic character."
Snipes' return as Blade was no joke, but he did drop a pretty hilarious line about there only ever being one Blade (a reference to the troubled...

It started with a text. Or, really, several texts.
That’s how director Shawn Levy and Ryan Reynolds convinced Chris Evans, Jennifer Garner, Wesley Snipes, Channing Tatum and more major stars to join Reynolds and Hugh Jackman in the otherwise top-secret cast of “Deadpool & Wolverine.” In the multiversal adventure, those actors reprised their roles from various Fox-era Marvel movies, including Evans as Johnny Storm from 2005’s “Fantastic Four” and the 2007 sequel “Rise of the Silver Surfer,” Garner’s Elektra from 2003’s “Daredevil” and 2005’s “Elektra,” Snipes from the “Blade” trilogy, and Tatum as Gambit — whose film never saw the light of day. Despite the many, many years that have passed since those names first donned their Spandex costumes, Levy says they didn’t require much persuading to get back in uniform.

It’s no secret that the Covid-19 pandemic upended the movie theater business in 2020, but in the years since, the industry has slowly climbed back. In 2021, 14 movies were able to cross the coveted $100 million mark at the U.S. box office. In 2022, that number jumped up to 18 films. And in 2023, there were a whopping 25 such blockbusters. So how many features released during the current 2024 calendar year will end up becoming box office behemoths? Stay tuned.
To date, the biggest money-makers of the year are a pair of highly anticipated sequels: “Inside Out 2” and “Dune: Part Two.” Scroll through our gallery above (or click here for direct access) to see all of the 2024 box office hits so far that made more than $100 million in the United States. The number will continue to grow as high-profile movies like “Wicked” and “Mufasa: The Lion King” will be released later in the year.

The week that includes the July 4 holiday is usually a big one for streaming services — but it’s never been as big as this year.
Nielsen’s streaming content ratings show the week of July 1-7 as the biggest one ever since the measurement firm began regularly tracking streaming several years ago. TV users spent 313 billion minutes on streaming platforms for the week, and for the first time, every entrant in the top 10 overall titles had at least 1 billion minutes of viewing.
The previous biggest week came just seven days earlier, when seven of the overall top 10 crossed the billion-minute mark. Nielsen also says July 7 was the fourth-largest streaming day it has ever tracked, behind Jan. 13 — when Peacock had an exclusive NFL playoff game — and Feb. 17-18, which was both the Presidents Day holiday and had a cold snap keeping much of the country indoors.

We're sure the majority of you have seen Deadpool and Wolverine at this stage, but just in case, be warned of major spoilers from this point on.
When Logan (Hugh Jackman) and the Merc With a Mouth (Ryan Reynolds) are banished to the Void by Mr. Paradox (Matthew Macfadyen), they discover that a group of Multiverse Variants have joined forces to make a stand against Cassandra Nova (Emma Corrin).
The team is made up of characters who had their time in the sun (Wesley Snipes' Blade), who never really got a chance to shine (Jennifer Garner's Elektra and Dafne Keen's Laura/X-23), and one who never even got to make his big-screen debut.
Channing Tatum was all set to play Gambit in a solo X-Men spin-off, but the project was scrapped when Disney acquired 20th Century Fox's assets. In Deadpool and Wolverine, the Fly Me To the Moon...

Sony is already ahead of the game without having invested hundreds of millions of dollars into its own streaming platform. This week, once again, results show this is no barrier to Sony’s success in reaching home viewers while generating strong revenues.
“Bad Boys: Ride or Die” premiered on VOD for a $19.99 rental last Tuesday, 47 days after its theatrical release. It remains in the box office top 10 at #7, with a $192 million domestic gross so far. Both iTunes (ranking by transaction) and Fandango (which calculates by revenue) rank it #1.
Meantime, “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” is the latest of Sony’s films to transition to initial streaming on Netflix about four months after release (and a strong VOD run). It took first place there immediately when it debuted last Tuesday, staying atop all week.
Kevin Costner’s “Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1” (Warner Bros.) was displaced from the top spot on both charts.

In a less stupid world, the most controversial part of the Paris Olympics opening ceremony would have been when the Minions were callously drowned for our amusement. Instead there’s now a major controversy brewing involving “dancers and drag queens” forming a tableau that some people interpreted as being representative of The Last Supper.
Catholic leaders have called it a “mockery of Christianity,” despite the fact that it was actually supposed to be a depiction of the Greek God Dionysus and the “Feast of the Gods.” Yeah, apparently Christians don’t have a monopoly on dinner parties thrown by deities.
Although, as far as we know, this is the first time that Dionysus has been represented as a ginger Dr. Manhattan.
Of course, even if it was supposed to be The Last Supper, the iconic religious tableau has been the subject of parody and revision for decades without sparking the...

Star Trek’s Comic-Con panel Saturday revealed the trailer for the Discovery spinoff movie Section 31, with Michelle Yeoh reprising her role from that series.
For the non-Trekkies, Yeoh — before her Oscar win for Everything Everywhere All at Once — played two roles on Star Trek: Discovery, first as Captain Philippa Georgiou (who dies early on) and then, from the “mirror universe,” Emperor Philippa Georgiou.
It’s the latter, villainous character that Yeoh will be portraying in Section 31, the title of which references a secret division of Starfleet that deals with spycraft and covert operations.

Despicable Me 4 Box Office (Worldwide): Crosses $350 Million Mark Overseas( Photo Credit – YouTube )
The audience has not forgotten Illumination’s biggie, Despicable Me 4, amid the arrival of movies like Twisters and, most recently, Deadpool & Wolverine. The animated film with Steve Carell as the lead voice cast is set to cross a significant milestone at the worldwide box office. Keep scrolling for the deets.
The makers maintained the franchise’s tradition of releasing the movie on the Fourth of July week and the Minions and Gru are always loved by the fans. Hence, it is the highest-grossing animated film franchise ever and has crossed the $5 billion mark. In this fourth installment, Will Ferrell and Sofia Vergara have joined the cast as the main antagonist and his girlfriend, respectively. It will definitely feel the impact of the Marvel movie with fewer screenings, but a section of the audience enjoys these...

Paris delivered an Olympics Opening Ceremony worthy of the world’s attention.
The spectacle directed by French actor and artistic director Thomas Jolly celebrated the over 10,000 athletes participating in this year’s games while showing the world French culture on the highest level.
In what felt like a true Tour de France, audiences around the world were able to walk through the Louvre Museum, sit underneath the Eiffel Tower, sail on the Seine and watch Parisian culture on full display.
Rumored performances by Lady Gaga and Céline Dion did not disappoint and surprise returns from fan-favorite athletes made the four-hour special well worth it.
Before President Emmanuel Macron of France announced the official start of the games, Thomas Bach, the president of the International Olympic Committee, thanked France for the “magical welcome” and gave a message of hope to the athletes before him.
“In our Olympic world, there is no global south or global north.

For months before the 2024 Summer Olympics, there had been questions surrounding Paris’ ability to hold such a massive event. The city’s residents had threatened to defecate in the Seine River — the site of the opening ceremony — in protest of its highly polluted waters. As the opening presentation neared, things didn’t exactly get better. Just this morning, France’s high-speed rail trains were a target of arson, and thunderstorms cast clouds over the city. Yet, when the opener finally commenced, audiences were transported through a whimsical and engaging four-hour showcase that presented the best of Paris’ glorious architecture and music while welcoming top athletes from across the globe to the French capital.
The ceremony launched with French soccer legend Zinedine Zidane jogging through the streets, carrying the lighted torch down into the Paris Metro and emerging on the Seine via sailboat in a gorgeous explosion of blue, white and red hovering above the river.

The skies over a soaked Paris remained overcast for Friday’s 2024 Olympics Opening Ceremony as the promised trés unique spectacle on the River Seine proved rudderless despite some superstars, a historical mixtape, and a grande balançoire or two.
Despite the theatre on the grandest scale with landmarks like the Eiffel Tower, the Notre-Dame de Paris cathedral and the Louvre as the backdrop, the opening ceremony simply wasn’t great TV.
Even with the rain pouring down, things definitely improved once darkness fell over City of Lights more than two hours into NBC’s live coverage. Night unveiled more of the drama of Paris itself, the river, and the performers who came alive as the barge-propelled parade of nation and their 205 delegations came to an end.
In the end as Celine Dion made her much-hyped and pitch-perfect appearance under the Olympic rings on the sparkling Eiffel Tower and past Gold medalist...

Today marks the official kickoff of the 2024 Olympic games, a celebration of athletic excellence, international cooperation, and… adorable, yet murderous, yellow cartoon blobs?
The Opening Ceremony featured a parade of boats traveling down the Seine river, as well as a performance from Lady Gaga, but all of these elements ended up being completely upstaged by the presence of the Minions.
Yes, for some reason, the broadcast included a segment in which we see the Minions in an underwater sub, just beneath the E. coli-tainted waters of the Seine, training for the Olympic games. Also, they seem to have stolen the Mona Lisa from the Louvre somehow. One Minion keeps tossing javelins, several of which end up piercing the vessel’s hull, causing the ship to fill with water, seemingly drowning all of the Minions. The “Mona Lisa” then bobs to the surface, in real life, presumably to remind visiting dignitaries...

Illumination and Universal’s Despicable Me 4 handily crossed the six-century mark at the global box office this week, now with $632M through Thursday. The latest in the series has pushed the worldwide running total for the Despicable Me/Minions franchise to $5.3B, overtaking Transformers ($5.295B) and the Avatar movies ($5.268B). This puts the franchise at No. 12 on the all-time global chart.
As we reported earlier this month, the latest installment from Gru and the gang helped propel the Despicable Me/Minions films across the $5B mark worldwide, making it the first animated franchise to reach the milestone. It was already, and remains, the biggest animated franchise of all time globally.
After beginning early overseas play in select markets on June 20, the Chris Renaud-directed and Patrick Delage-co-directed DM4 has continued a staggered release pattern. This past frame added Japan with the biggest studio opening of the year. Korea...

In the parlance of the times, The Bear absolutely ate in the week of its third season premiere.
The FX-produced Hulu show had its biggest streaming week to date for the June 24-30 period. The Emmy-winning series, whose third season premiered June 27, racked up 1.23 billion minutes of viewing for the week — beating its previous high of 1.01 billion minutes shortly after its season two premiere last year.
The Bear was one of seven shows to score more than a billion minutes of viewing for the week, a rarity in the four-year history of Nielsen’s streaming rankings. Former Showtime series Your Honor continued its strong run, leading all titles with 1.58 billion minutes of viewing on Netflix and Paramount+. Another Showtime title, Dexter, saw its viewing rise by 84 percent from the previous week to 1.48 billion minutes.
The Boys (1.18 billion minutes), Bridgerton (1.14 million), Bluey (1.1 billion) and House of the Dragon (1.05 billion) also...

Is the Despicable Me franchise a Darwinist project in which the Minions started their evolution back at the beginning of life on Earth, or did intelligent design deliver Gru his wacky yellow Tic-Tac workers? More importantly, are the films’ writers finally ready to answer the Hitler question?
When Despicable Me premiered in the summer of 2010, the star of the smash-hit kid’s comedy wasn’t Steve Carell playing the lead villain Gru, or Jason Segel’s alternate antagonist Vector, or even the thankfully-since-fired Russell Brand as the brilliant scientist Dr. Nefario. No, regardless of the billing order, the undeniable headliner of the massively successful movie that launched a seven-film franchise was the collective order of the Minions, Gru’s colorful cronies whose slapstick antics and love of bananas captivated children and adults alike to the tune of a half-billion-dollar return at the box office.

You’ve probably seen Inside Out 2 because, well, it seems like everyone has. As of today, the Pixar film has become the highest-grossing animated movie of all time globally, raking in over $1.462 billion at the box office.
The animated film accomplished this feat six weeks after its initial release, officially surpassing Frozen 2, which had held the title since 2019.
Inside Out 2 now sits as the 13th highest-grossing film in the history of the global box office. Among its other accomplishments, it has become the fastest animated title to reach $1 billion globally (19 days) and the only movie to hit 10 figures thus far in 2024. It also holds the record for the biggest global opening of all time for an animated feature ($292 million), as well as the second-biggest domestic opening of all time for an animated feature ($154 million).

Vindication for critics who thought Kevin Costner’s epic “Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1″ (Warner Bros.) felt more like a TV drama: It was an immediate #1 on VOD top 10 lists.
The first of a planned four-film series, with the second already completed (and now delayed after the postponement of its August release), it showed poorly in theaters with $28.5 million in U.S./Canada after its fourth weekend. Its rapid transition to home viewing after 18 days (standard for Universal beyond its biggest hits) looks like a smart move: It suggests there is an audience, although perhaps not one eager to watch the 181-minute epic in a theater.
This could help the troubled project gain traction, get it out of the red, and increase interest for “Chapter 2,” wherever/whenever it plays.

Keanu Reeves Opens Up About Matrix Movies “Red Pill” Metaphor. (Photo Credit – Instagram)
In a recent interview with the Guardian, Keanu Reeves shared his thoughts on the Matrix movies’ metaphors twisted by the Alt-Right to fuel distrust of government and media.
Keanu Reeves (Neo) starred in The Matrix, in which he uncovers humanity lost in a war with machines they created long ago and is now living in a computer simulation created to enslave them. He then joins members of the human resistance against the Machines in the real world.
One of the most iconic scenes in the film sees Morpheus (a member of the human resistance) offer Neo the choice of a blue pill or a red pill. Neo can pop the blue pill and return to life blissfully unaware of the matrix, the simulated world. Or take the red pill, accept reality, and rise against the tyranny of the machines.

James Franco’s Method Acting Annoyed Tyrese Gibson. (Photo Credit – Instagram)
James Franco’s method of acting annoyed his co-star Tyrese Gibson to the degree that the latter vowed never to work with the 127 Hours actor again. They starred in the 2006 film Annapolis. In 2007, Tyrese Gibson told Playboy of his feud with James Franco after clashing on the set over Franco’s method of acting, which left him hurt.
James Franco’s acting skills have earned immense praise, even winning him an Oscar in 2011 for 127 Hours. However, the actor has been labeled a magnet for controversy and isn’t particularly easy to work with. His co-star in the 2006 film Annapolis opened up about the difficulty in shooting scenes with Franco, who took his method acting too far.

It has been 14 years since Despicable Me first hit the theatres in 2010. On 5th July, 2024 the fourth installment in the franchise or ‘fourthquel’, began its theatrical run. Not much about the characters has changed. Of course, Gru is no more the bad guy. But he’s still the same. So are his girls, and the minions, as well as the movie’s stellar performance at the Box Office. The franchise has already broken some crazy Box Office records. And it is on the way to break some more.

For once, disaster is a box-office positive. “Twisters” (Universal) beat all projections to score an $80.5 million #1 weekend. Timed for needed escapism, and with the cataclysmic genre that excels on premium screens, it proved a worthy successor to its original.
The 1996 “Twister” opened to $41 million in early May. (That was back when pre-Memorial Day didn’t mean the start of summer.) At today’s prices, that would represent around $100 million today. It ended up with a six-time multiple of $495 (about $600 million at today’s prices).
Because “Twisters” competed for attention in the research, tracking far underestimated the interest in the film. Projections of $40 million-$50 million seemed wrong on multiple levels, but even our prediction of at least $60 million fell far short of the mark.
Even more impressive is its weekend trajectory. After $8 million in previews, $70 million seemed plausible for the weekend. The guess rose to $75 million by Saturday. But when the...

“Twisters” is taking the box office by storm, though it’s not resonating quite as strongly with international audiences.
The film, a standalone sequel to the 1996 disaster epic “Twister,” has whipped up $27.1 million from 76 foreign territories over the weekend and $42 million overseas in total. “Twisters” has been far more powerful at the domestic box office, though, where ticket sales ignited to $80.5 million. Globally, the movie has grossed $123.2 million to date.
Outside of the U.S. and Canada, this weekend’s biggest markets were the U.K. ($5.5 million), Mexico ($2.5 million), Australia ($2 million) and France ($1.9 million). “Twisters” misfired in China, earning a paltry $1.5 million in its debut. Imax screens contributed $2.2 million internationally and $11.2 million globally for the weekend.
“Twisters” cost $155 million to produce, not including the many millions in global marketing efforts. Universal Pictures backed the movie and released it domestically while Warner Bros. has international rights. The film has yet to open in Japan or Korea.

Update: Universal/Warner Bros/Amblin’s Twisters positively blasted past forecasts domestically this session. While the international box office result is pretty close to where we saw it coming in, there’s no denying this is much more of a domestic play.
The global cume, largely boosted by domestic’s heartland turnout this weekend, is now $123.2M. Universal has domestic rights and Warner is handling overseas where $27.1M was wrangled from 76 markets this frame. That’s after early release in 38 markets last session. This weekend saw a 30% drop overall overseas, for a $42.7M offshore cume.
Latin America had great holds at Colombia (+8%), Argentina (+1%), Mexico (-22%), Peru (-23%) and Brazil (-31%). Australia was down just 21%. Japan and and Korea are still to release.
Nostalgia is not so prevalent for the original Twisters overseas, but with good social and critical scores plus holidays, maybe we see some uptick ahead. That’s gonna...

Down at the Universal Studios offices, the staff are undoubtedly doing The Twist in celebration of Twisters much higher than expected opening weekend. Indeed, they have reason to celebrate, with even the most optimistic box office predictions estimating the film would only open in the $50 million-ish range (including ours). To everyone’s surprise, the movie rallied to an incredible $80.5 million opening, which makes it the third biggest opening of the year behind Inside Out 2 and Dune: Part Two.
This is a major win for Universal, with the film posting Oppenheimer-level numbers and a rock-solid A-minus CinemaScore. If word of mouth is good, this could leg out to a North American total in the $200 million plus range, although it will face steep competition next weekend from Deadpool & Wolverine. It’s also a major win for Glen Powell as a leading man, with Hollywood hyped on his potential for stardom...

“Twisters” is taking the box office by storm.
The movie, a standalone sequel to the 1996 disaster epic “Twister,” has collected a massive $80.5 million from 4,151 North American theaters in its debut. Heading into the weekend, the follow-up film was projected to generate $50 million to $55 million. It’s the third-biggest opening weekend of the year behind “Inside Out 2” ($154 million) and “Dune: Part Two” ($82 million). Directed by “Minari” filmmaker Lee Isaac Chung, “Twisters” stars Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powell and Anthony Ramos as storm chasers who find themselves in the fight of their lives as multiple tornadoes converge over central Oklahoma.
Analysts believe several factors contributed to the surge in initial ticket sales, the most important being that audiences simply dug the film. It holds an “A-” on CinemaScore. Nostalgia for the original blockbuster, starring Helen Hunt, Bill Paxton, Cary Elwes and Philip Seymour Hoffman, as well as the rising bankability of the property’s fresh faces,...

Lee Isaac Chung’s Twisters is whipping up huge winds at the box office, with forecasters predicting a far better than expected domestic opening of $80.5 million in North America. That’s even up from Saturday’s already massive estimate of $74.6 million.
The record-breaking movie, playing in 4,151 theaters, easily boasts the top domestic opening ever for a natural disaster film, not adjusted for inflation. (The current crown holder is Roland Emmerich’s The Day After Tomorrow, which bowed to $68.44 million in 2004.) It’s also the third biggest start of the year to date behind Inside Out 2 ($154.2 million) and Dune: Part Two ($82.5 million) after edging out Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire ($80 million).
The turnout for Twisters cements the rising star status of Hollywood’s man-of-the-moment Glen Powell, along with Daisy Edgar-Jones and Anthony Ramos (the trio lead the ensemble cast). It’s also a notable win for Chung, the acclaimed filmmaker of indie hit Minari.

When probed about his decision to quit the successful franchise that catapulted him to worldwide stardom, Jackman explained his decision by simply saying it “just felt like it was the right time to do it.”
However, in a 2017 conversation with Willem Dafoe for Variety, Hugh Jackman revealed his pal Jerry Seinfeld was to blame for the Australian actor retiring his Wolverine.

Anne Hathaway Defended Mocking Katie Holmes After SNL Skit Uproar ( Photo Credit – Instagram )
Anne Hathaway once defended mocking Katie Holmes. After she impersonated the Dawson Creek actress on Saturday Night Live, the incident created a media frenzy. At the time, multiple reports allege that Tom Cruise’s ex-wife was displeased with the Princess Diaries actress’ performance.
In 2010, during her second go-round hosting SNL, Anne Hathaway performed a spacey impersonation of Katie Holmes from the show Dawson’s Creek that seemingly suggested Holes’ character Joey Potter was not too bright.
Shortly after, reports emerged that Holmes was not pleased with Anne Hathway’s seemingly deriding impression of the actress. In response, Hathway defended mocking Katie Holmes, saying, “It wasn’t really Katie Holmes; it was more [her Creek character] Joey Potter.”

The penultimate season of The Boys has come to an end on Prime Video. Much like the rest of Season 4, The Boys continued to set up events that would eventually raise the stakes for the upcoming Gen V Season 2 and The Boys Season 5. Throughout the season, Homelander has been making moves toward setting up Victoria Neuman as his puppet president. On the other hand, the boys, under Mother’s Milk, have been tirelessly trying to counter the master plan set up by Sister Sage, who unceremoniously got replaced by Firecracker before the finale episode. The ending of Season 4 of The Boys not only puts forth a clear winner in the race between Homelander and the boys but also sets up story arcs that would yield their true results in Season 5.

It helps that Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F is fun and features a cast of veteran actors reliving the glory days that helped make them household names. Regardless of the reason, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F is a hit, and Murphy deserves kudos for his efforts to make Axel’s latest case a thrilling revival.

While Netflix has a lot to answer for after forging a world in which Kevin Hart's Lift becomes the number one most-watched film in the world, it's also got a lot to be proud of. Arguably the best thing to happen as a result of Netflix's domination of the streaming game has been the way in which global audiences have been exposed to films outside of their native countries. It happened when Spanish historical drama "Society of the Snow" -- which did what no other portrayal of the Andes disaster could -- was released on the streamer. Prior to that, "Dark," the German version of "Stranger Things" also became a global hit.
Therefore, it's fair to say that Netflix is about more than pumping out an overwhelming deluge of middling "content." This week, the streamer proved its power to elevate smaller international films to major heights, by taking what...

It was a busy weekend at the box office, even though, if one were to look at the July 12 frame on the calendar at the beginning of the year, it wouldn't have seemed like it. "Despicable Me 4" was in its second weekend, one in which it topped the charts again and helped push the "Minions" franchise past $5 billion worldwide. Neon's horror movie "Longlegs" arrived and absolutely obliterated expectations with a $22.6 million opening, a record for the studio. On paper, it didn't seem like it would amount to much, but everything clicked. However, Apple and Sony's "Fly Me to the Moon" is the big question mark as the big budget, '60s-set rom-com had a somewhat soft debut. Yet, it's one of those situations where the opening weekend alone doesn't tell the whole story.

By far the biggest of the May movie releases, “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” (Disney) is #1 in its initial week on both iTunes and Fandango’s top 10 VOD lists.
This comes 60 days after its theatrical debut, with the longer-than-average window now typical for most Disney titles after aggressive home viewing placement during and right after Covid.
What’s surprising is how easily Jeff Nichols’ “The Bikeriders” (Focus) beat out Sony’s animated “The Garfield Movie” among other new releases. The former just passed the $20 million domestic gross mark over its fourth weekend. “Garfield” is at $91 million, four and a half times bigger, and part of a period where animated titles dominate both on screen and at home.
“The Bikeriders” was #2 most of the week at iTunes and #2 at Fandango for the full-week chart. It’s now #3 at iTunes, behind “Civil War” (A24), surging at a reduced price after significant success at $19.99 earlier.

People just love the Minions. With "Despicable Me 4" continuing to tear it up at the global box office, the franchise has crossed a major milestone, making a bit of history in the process. Illumination's signature series of films has now collectively crossed the $5 billion mark worldwide, making it the first animated franchise in history to do so. What's more, if things continue to go the way they're going, that number will be $6 billion and counting in just a few years.
"Despicable Me 4" once again topped the charts over the weekend, pulling in $44.6 million domestically in its second weekend. That represents just a 40% drop week-to-week following the sequel's record-setting opening weekend. Internationally, Gru and the Minions held strong as well, pulling in another $87.9 million from overseas markets. That puts the movie's running total at $437.8 million worldwide, with a lot of gas left in the tank. More importantly, it was...
