When people say, “Hollywood is a cult!”, it’s usually meant as hyperbole. But when Michelle Pfeiffer tried to make her name in Tinseltown, she found herself actually falling in with a cult, even if she didn’t realize it at the time.
Although Michelle Pfeiffer grew up in California, she knew to make it in movies she would have to move to Hollywood. Soon after she made her small screen debut on a 1978 episode of Fantasy Island, Pfeiffer landed the role of The Bombshell on Delta House, a terrible spin-off of Animal House. And it was that character name that Pfeiffer felt compelled to live up to, becoming close with a group that she thought was just trying to help her stay fit. “They worked with weights and put people on diets. Their thing was vegetarianism.” She added that this was far from being a standard weight loss group,...

In 1993, Jim Carrey was still just that white guy on In Living Color, but by the end of 1994, he was king of the world. In one year, Carrey had three hit comedies that topped the box office: Ace Ventura: Pet Detective in February, The Mask in July and Dumb and Dumber in December. Each is great and nostalgic in its own right, but given the fact that The Mask turns 30 this week, we caught up with the film’s director, Chuck Russell, to talk about the film’s 30 greatest moments.
30 The Loaner
“There’s a Stanley Ipkiss inside all of us,” says Russell, referring to Carrey’s character in The Mask. “That was the beauty of the character. Life treats us like shit and humiliates us and seeing it through Stanley’s character is funny and charming the way Jim portrayed it. The loaner car he gets is an example of that.

We’re obviously completely self-aware that we’re publishing this list the Monday after Deadpool & Wolverine made $205 million at the box office. That’s the whole point of being meta, right? Or if you want to get Merriam-Webster involved, something that “shows or suggests an explicit awareness of itself or oneself as a member of its category: cleverly self-referential.”
That said, when it comes to movies, this kind of self-awareness can cover a wide range of narrative devices. A character quietly acknowledging the audience can be meta. Other times, meta scenes can intentionally break apart a film’s reality. Meta doesn’t even necessarily need to be done for the sake of humor either, as plenty of movies — from Frederico Fellini’s 8½ to the horror thriller Funny Games — get meta without much humorous intention.
But for the purposes of this list, which Cracked writers Tim Grierson and Matt Solomon and...

As Dan Aykroyd reminds us in his enjoyable new Audible Original, Blues Brothers: The Arc of Gratitude, there was a moment in 1978 when his friend and collaborator John Belushi was at the center of a smash-hit album, movie, and TV show, all at once. The album in question was Briefcase Full of Blues, by the Blues Brothers, Aykroyd and Belushi’s band — who went from a fun side project to a powerhouse band with their own, now-legendary movie, 1980’s The Blues Brothers. (The movie, of course, was Animal House, and...

Pisano was married to Belushi, the larger-than-life star of “Saturday Night Live,” “Animal House” and “The Blues Brothers,” from 1973 until his death from an overdose in 1982. The two met while in high school in Wheaton, Illinois. Pisano was there for his meteoric rise, and she endured the worst of Belushi’s infidelity and addiction struggles, yet she devoted much of her life to honoring his memory. She was a producer on...

"'American Pie' is the latest in a long tradition of immature, self-indulgent comedies that celebrate the recklessness of adolescents." That's what Looking Closer's Jeffrey Overstreet had to say in his original review of "American Pie" in 1999. On the flipside, Film Threat's Chris Gore declared the movie to be "one of the greatest teen films of all time." Let us never forget that two things can be true at once.
Written by an unknown named Adam Herz, it originally began circulating with the clever title "Untitled Teenage Sex Comedy Which Can Be Made for Under $10 Million That Studio Readers Will Most Likely Hate But I Think You Will Love." The gimmick worked and it got the attention of studios, becoming the...

Actor Kevin Bacon has worked steadily as an actor and appeared in so many different films that he actually spawned a trivia game called “Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon.” The purpose is to see if you can link Bacon to any other actor in less than six other movies.
Bacon started his career at the Circle in the Square Theater School in New York City, which then led to small roles in the immensely popular “Animal House” and in the Neil Simon film “Only When I Laugh.” He then appeared in the sleeper smash “Friday the 13th” where he was one of the early victims in the immensely popular series of films. Fame would come when he joined such other young actors as Steve Guttenberg, Daniel Stern, Ellen Barkin, Mickey Rourke, Tim Daly and Paul Reiser in the bittersweet comedy “Diner” from Barry Levinson. What kind of music goes best with comedy? Even if you’ve never seen The Benny Hill Show, you know its silly, sped-up theme song. For years, funny movies would incorporate swinging jazz or playful orchestral tunes. Then, in the late 1970s, John Landis had the idea to tap acclaimed Oscar-winning composer (and friend) Elmer Bernstein to write a no-winking serious score for Landis’ outrageous Animal House. The juxtaposition worked perfectly, the onscreen hijinks accentuated by Bernstein’s soaring strings — almost as if the movie was pretending to be classy while the characters were thumbing their nose at the pomposity. Soon, other movies, like Airplane! (also scored by Bernstein), were doing the same thing, proving that what initially seemed like a bizarre notion for music in a comedy could actually be brilliant.
But times change, and one trend gets replaced by a new one. By the mid-1980s, several hit comedies contained a hit single.

One day in 1979, the phone rang at producer Bob Weiss’ house. “Be on your property tonight,” said the voice on the other line. According to the book Wild and Crazy Guys: The Comedy Mavericks of the ’80s Changed Hollywood Forever by Nick de Semlyen, later that evening, an object came flying over the fence and onto Weiss’ backyard. It was the script for a Blues Brothers movie that Wiess commissioned from Dan Aykroyd, who created the musical comedy act with John Belushi for Saturday Night Live.
If the way that Aykroyd delivered the manuscript was odd, the contents inside were even weirder. Titled The Return of the Blues Brothers and credited to the “Scriptatron Gl-9000,” the script was 324 pages long, far more than the 120 page standard, and filled with unlikely digressions.
Weiss shouldn’t have been surprised. Even if the 26-year-old Aykroyd had written a script before (he hadn’t...
