While the subscriber decline was expected, Paramount+’s financials appear to be heading in the right direction.
Is this the last time we’ll get an earnings update from Paramount’s three-headed “Office of the CEO”? Paramount Global unveiled its second quarter 2024 earnings report on Thursday afternoon, revealing that Paramount+ had lost 2.8 million subscribers, bringing its new total to 68 down from its first-quarter total of 71.2 million. However, the decline was part of a planned exit from a hard bundle in the South Korean market.

So, despite that subscriber top-line dip, Paramount’s streaming did have good news as the company’s direct-to-consumer (Dtc) segment turned a $26 million profit with Paramount+ revenue increasing 46% year-over-year. The streamer’s global average revenue per user increased by 26%, but Paramount Global did not release those specific statistics.

Women are falling out of focus on the small screen. According to a new report on gender and hiring in TV presented by IMDbPro and ReFrame — an initiative of Sundance Institute and Wif — women lost gains made over the past several years in nearly every position analyzed.
Last year’s data found that women (or gender-diverse performers) accounted for 54 percent of lead roles, while the new report details a decrease of 13 percent to 41 percent. Also released as part of the study, ReFrame and IMDbPro award a Stamp to recognize gender-balanced hiring on television shows, and this year 77 of the 200 most popular TV and streaming series of 2023-24 earned the distinction (or 38.5 percent). The total represents a dip of 8.5 percent from last year, or 20 percent from a peak in 2020-21.

The upcoming TV series Welcome to Derry, which will serve as a prequel to Warner Bros’ two-part adaptation of the classic Stephen King novel It (pick up a copy Here), was originally meant to be for the Max streaming service, but we recently learned that it will be airing on HBO as well. The show went into production in Port Hope, Ontario earlier this year, aiming for a 2025 premiere – and not only did some footage from the show make its way into the HBO promo embedded above, but it has also been revealed that production has wrapped!
Brad Caleb Kane (Tokyo Vice) and Jason Fuchs (Wonder Woman), who was a co-producer on It: Chapter Two, are the showrunners on Welcome to Derry. The show is being executive produced by Andy Muschietti and Barbara Muschietti, the sibling director/producer duo that was behind the two It movies, through their production company Double Dream.

Star Trek fans have a bone to pick with Star Trek: Discovery over a major missed opportunity. As the show boldly ventured into new territories, it overlooked a chance to bring Jeffrey Combs back into a role he was born to play. Combs, who left an indelible mark in Star Trek: Tng with his iconic portrayal, was denied the opportunity to reprise this pitch-perfect role in Discovery Season 5.

The cast of the upcoming “Star Trek: Section 31,” a direct-to-streaming Paramount+ film starring Michelle Yeoh, Sam Richardson (“The Afterparty”), Omari Hardwick (“Power”) and Kacey Rohl (“The Magicians”), stopped by Variety Studio, presented by Google TV, at the 2024 San Diego Comic-Con.
Richardson, Hardwick and Rohl were joined by director Olatunde Osunsanmi and executive producer Alex Kurtzman to talk about the franchise’s upcoming interstellar venture.
A spin-off from the series “Star Trek: Discovery,” the film follows Philippa Georgiou (Yeoh) as she works with Section 31, a secret division of Starfleet tasked with protecting the United Federation of Planets.
“The movie is a lot of things. It’s action, drama, comedy, it’s equal parts all of that,” said Richardson, who plays a Quasi, a shapeshifting chameloid. “So, it’s not just up to Quasi to be funny, everybody’s funny in it, and everybody’s serious and the stakes are there for everybody.

News of the bid from a financial conglomerate circulated Wednesday, but reports were retracted as the legitimacy of the bid’s announcement came into question.
Wednesday saw one of the strangest turns yet in the Paramount Global sale saga. Just as outlets began widely reporting that former Warner Music chair Edgar Bronfman Jr. was considering a bid for the company during its 45-day “go-shop” window that’s built into its merger deal with Skydance Media, Business Wire posted a press release from a firm called Apex Capital Trust which claimed it had made a $43 billion all-cash bid to take over Paramount. That sent Paramount’s stock rising, but by late afternoon, the press release had been pulled from Business Wire’s website on grounds that the legitimacy of the bid was in question.

Edgar Bronfman Jr. was eyeing an offer for Paramount before the Skydance deal was approved, and is reportedly still mulling.
Just when you thought it was safe to assume that the Paramount merger deal was all sewn up, a new wrinkle in the story emerges. The latest wrinkle comes in the form of a report from Axios, which states that former Warner Music chair Edgar Bronfman Jr. hasn’t completely given up on the idea of bidding for Paramount, even as the company proceeds with a 45-day “go-shop” period stipulated in its merger deal with Skydance Media.
Key Details: Bronfman emerged as a potential suitor for Paramount months ago, but never submitted a formal bid. The “go-shop” window in the Paramount and Skydance deal ends on Aug. 21. A spokesperson said Bronfman is “considering his options” with regard to Paramount. 7-Day Free Trial $5.99+ / month ParamountPlus.com

Star Trek’s Comic-Con panel Saturday revealed the trailer for the Discovery spinoff movie Section 31, with Michelle Yeoh reprising her role from that series.
For the non-Trekkies, Yeoh — before her Oscar win for Everything Everywhere All at Once — played two roles on Star Trek: Discovery, first as Captain Philippa Georgiou (who dies early on) and then, from the “mirror universe,” Emperor Philippa Georgiou.
It’s the latter, villainous character that Yeoh will be portraying in Section 31, the title of which references a secret division of Starfleet that deals with spycraft and covert operations.

"Somebody's gotta keep it lively, right?" During San Diego Comic-Con, Paramount+ revealed the first look teaser trailer for an intriguing new Star Trek spin-off movie called Star Trek: Section 31. It's not a series, it's a one-time movie "event" - connected to the recent "Star Trek: Discovery" series. It is intended to be the first real TV movie in the St franchise and part of producer Alex Kurtzman's expanded Star Trek Universe. Section 31 stars Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh as Emperor Philippa Georgiou, who becomes an agent for a secret division of Starfleet. Tasked with protecting the United Federation of Planets, she also must face the sins of her past. The cast includes Omari Hardwick, Kacey Rohl, Sam Richardson, Sven Ruygrok, Robert Kazinsky, Humberly Gonzalez, and James Hiroyuki Liao. This looks a bit funky - definitely a departure from what most expect, but it seems like they're having fun with dark humor,...

Approximately 500 hundred years ago, we learned that Michelle Yeoh was in talks to star in a spin-off series focused on her character from "Star Trek: Discovery." In January 2019 (approximately 499 years ago), "Star Trek: Section 31" was officially announced as an in-development project for CBS All Access. Since then, CBS All Access has died of old age and been resurrected as Paramount+, and the "Section 31" TV series has become a Paramount+ original movie instead. Now, the first teaser trailer for "Star Trek: Section 31" is finally here.
The original Captain Philippa Georgiou was killed off in the second episode of "Discovery," but Yeoh returned as a Mirror Universe version of the character: the sharply-dressed, gleefully wicked Emperor Philippa Georgiou. This evil Georgiou tagged along when the Discovery crew returned to their original universe, where her lack of morals made her a perfect fit for Starfleet Intelligence's black ops unit, Section 31. The “Star Trek: Section 31” teaser is here, and it’s a vibe like we’ve never gotten from “Star Trek” before. No Federation root-beer-only drinkers need apply for this club.
Directed by “Star Trek: Discovery” Mvp helmer Olatunde Osunsanmi — who directed that show’s premieres and finales and gave an extra cinematic dimension to the series — “Section 31” puts the spotlight on the secretive covert ops and intelligence unit within Starfleet. Michelle Yeoh, who plays the erstwhile Empress Georgiou of the Mirror Universe, is recruited by the organization to bring a different sensibility to it — one far removed from those who care about the Prime Directive or any other kind of pious Starfleet feel-goodery.
Which is to say that this is the first “Star Trek” property ever where a character says, “You’re a bad bitch.”

She’s now tasked with protecting the United Federation of Planets while facing the sins of her past.
Written by Craig Sweeny and directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi, Star Trek: Section 31 is executive produced by Alex Kurtzman, Craig Sweeny, Aaron Baiers, Olatunde Osunsanmi, Frank Siracusa, John Weber, Rod Roddenberry, Trevor Roth and Yeoh and is produced by CBS Studios in association with Secret Hideout and Roddenberry Entertainment.
It was also revealed at Comic-Con that Miku Martineau (Honor Society...

Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh is absolutely dangerous in the trailer for Olatunde Osunsanmi’s “Star Trek: Section 31.” In a clip shared at Comic-Con on Saturday, Yeoh’s Emperor Philippa Georgiou flaunts her talent for evil — and struggles with becoming something else — as Beyoncé’s “Formation” plays in the background.
“Emperor philippa Georgiou,” Omari Hardwick intones, “you’re a tyrant who murdered her own people by the millions… the past always catches up with you.”
Elsewhere in the trailer, Kacey Rohl explains to Yeoh, “31 is Black Ops division. Spy work. Starfleet is here to make sure no one commits murder” and Sam Richardson admits, “We can’t trust you with our lives, but here we go.”
“Someone’s got to keep it lively… right?” Yeoh asks, feigning innocence.
The clip also gave fans the first look at Miku Martineau as the younger version of Philippa Georgiou.

The long-awaited first trailer for Star Trek: Section 31 is finally here, and it definitely brings a fresh vibe to the franchise.
Paramount+ revealed a two-minute look (below) at the Star Trek: Discovery spinoff movie, which stars Everything Everywhere All at Once Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh, reprising her role as Emperor Philippa Georgiou.
The show is about Georgiou joining a secret “black ops” division of Starfleet. From the official description, when “tasked with protecting the United Federation of Planets, she also must face the sins of her past.”
The trailer strives for a more rebellious tone for the nearly 60-year-old Trek franchise, complete with contemporary music (the trailer is set to Beyoncé’s “Formation”), an onscreen “warning” from Starfleet about its “misfit content,” and title card graphics which break with Trek tradition. At one point an officer tells Georgiou that she’s there to keep her from murdering people, and the Emperor replies,...

“Star Trek: Starfleet Academy” has added some alumni to its faculty.
Tig Notaro (“Star Trek: Discovery”) and Robert Picardo (“Star Trek: Voyager”) will reprise their respective roles of Jett Reno and The Doctor, as series regulars on the newest iteration of the venerable sci-fi franchise, while Mary Wiseman and Oded Fehr will return as guest stars playing their “Discovery” characters Sylvia Tilly and Admiral Charles Vance.
They’re joining series lead Holly Hunter, who plays the captain and chancellor of Starfleet Academy, and the cast of cadets Kerrice Brooks, Bella Shepard, George Hawkins, Karim Diané and Zoë Steiner. The announcement of the legacy characters return was made by executive producers and showrunners Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau during the “Star Trek” Universe panel at San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday.

Since 2016, "Star Trek" has seen some dramatic ups and downs. The two Kelvin-verse "Star Trek" movies made by J.J. Abrams in 2009 and 2013 were big hits, catching a mass audience's eye with their high-octane action and sexy young casts. Justin Lin's 2016 sequel "Star Trek Beyond" wasn't as big a hit as Paramount would have liked, however, and the future of the "Star Trek" film franchise was thrown into question. It didn't help that "Star Trek: Discovery" launched in 2017 (as the flagship series for the CBS All Access streaming service), bringing the Trek franchise back to the "Prime" timeline.
"Star Trek 4," as it has been nicknamed, has ping-ponged a lot during its development. Multiple directors passed through the project, and the film was even once removed from Paramount's development slate entirely. In January 2024, however, it seemed that the project was back on.

Lawsuits have been threatened by other Paramount investors, but this is the first action taken by a Class B shareholder in the company.
It seemed almost certain that legal action was coming in Paramount Global’s new merger deal with Skydance Media. Throughout the negotiating process, nonvoting Paramount shareholders have feared that the deal would enrich company head Shari Redstone at their expense, and one such investor has seen those fears sufficiently realized to file a lawsuit over the merger in a Delaware court.
Key Details: Shareholder Scott Baker has filed a class-action lawsuit against Paramount and Skydance. Baker says there isn’t enough money set aside in the deal to buy out all Class B shareholders. Paramount insisted on a 45-day “go shop” period for the deal to ensure no other buyers could beat the terms. 7-Day Free Trial $5.99+ / month ParamountPlus.com

The character of Ryn (Noah Averbach-Katz) only appeared in three episodes of "Star Trek: Discovery," but he did leave an impression. Ryn, a blue-skinned Andorian, was introduced in the show's third season, shortly after the title ship flew through an aperture in time, and wound up in the year 3188 (having departed the year 2258). In the ensuing 930 years, the galaxy suffered through a massive spatial cataclysm that caused almost every starship in flight to spontaneously explode. This cataclysm, nicknamed "the Burn," cause the Federation to almost entirely collapse, resulting in a mercantile, capitalist system to rise in its place. The galaxy was now ruled largely by a mob-like entity called the Emerald Chain, a slave-based trading organization overseen by the vicious Orion Osyraa (Janet Kidder).
Osyraa had Ryn in her employ. Ryn had signed a contract, making him Osyraa's slave for life. He previously tried to stage a rebellion, but the...

Disney’s “The Acolyte” has just finished up its season, with Season 5 of “Star Trek: Discovery” not that far behind it, and there’s more “Strange New Worlds,” “Starfleet Academy,” “Andor,” and “Ahsoka” on the horizon. What a time to be a sci-fi nerd. But it’s an even better time, maybe, to be Hanelle M. Culpepper, the director who holds the distinction of being the only filmmaker (yet) to have worked across both the “Star Wars” and “Star Trek” TV franchises.
Culpepper has helmed three episodes “Star Trek: Discovery” and the very first three episodes of “Picard,” as well as Episode 6 and Episode 8 of “The Acolyte.” Going into the Disney+ series, she already had honed a lot of sci-fi muscles, as well as the skill of shooting double coverage to create twins out of one actor (Amandla Stenberg plays both fated force sisters Osha and Mae). The fifth and final season of "Star Trek: Discovery" aired on May 30, 2024, marking the end of an era. "Discovery" was the "Star Trek" series that launched CBS All Access back in 2017, signaling the return of the franchise to TV after a 12-year hiatus. It also was the first of six new "Star Trek" shows that were to run simultaneously on the service; "Discovery" soon shared time with "Short Treks," "Star Trek: Picard," "Star Trek: Lower Decks," "Star Trek: Prodigy," and "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds." There were grand plans afoot to add "Starfleet Academy" and "Section 31" to that roster, making "Star Trek" constant and ubiquitous.
Thanks to the caprices of the Streaming Wars, however, the expensive all-growth-all-the-time model proved to be untenable, and many of the above shows came to an end. As of this writing, only "Lower Decks" and "Strange New Worlds" are returning, while "Section 31" was shortened to a single TV movie.

When it was announced in 2019 that Nickelodeon would be getting its own animated “Star Trek” series, I must admit I was skeptical.
After all, “Star Trek: Discovery” was already airing its second season (which clearly set up the phenomenal spinoff “Strange New Worlds), and “Picard” had already been announced, as had the adult animated series “Lower Decks.” How could a show clearly intended for kids measure up against all of that?
Fast forward to the debut of “Star Trek: Prodigy” in October 2021 — and I have never been so happy to be so wrong.
This show, about a group of young misfits who stumble across a Starfleet ship and use it to escape their captivity on a desolate prison colony, embodied absolutely everything that I love about “Star Trek.”
