The Dog Days of summer—vaguely from mid-July through mid-August, depending on who does the counting—may not seem like much of an Oscar crucible. You’d think most Academy voters would be sipping Margaritas in Malibu, or Limoncello Martinis somewhere on the Mediterranean.
But as often as not in the last fifteen years, the Dog Day bracket has produced a Best Picture nominee. And last year, of course, it brought a winner in Oppenheimer, which was released alongside fellow Best Picture nominee Barbie on July 21, and was still going gangbusters in mid-August.
There’s a certain rough charm to the Dog Day nominees. They tend to be audience favorites, movies that connect with the movie-hungry middle, which powers them into the Oscar race, whatever the somewhat fussier film professionals may think.

Though his personal tragedies and demons have sometimes overshadowed his work, there’s no denying the impact Oscar-winning director Roman Polanski has had on cinema.
Born in 1933 in Paris and raised in Poland, Polanski’s childhood was marked by tragedy when he was separated from his parents during the Holocaust. As a child, he escaped the Krakow ghetto after his mother was killed in an Auschwitz gas chamber. When the war ended, he was reunited with his father and returned home.
He turned to filmmaking as a student, making his directorial debut with the international hit “Knife in the Water” (1962), which earned an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Language Film. His followup, the psychological thriller “Repulsion” (1965), was an even bigger hit, and he was soon drafted by Hollywood to direct the occult horror film “Rosemary’s Baby” (1968), which earned him a Best Adapted Screenplay bid.

Westwind Media, the Burbank-based sound design and audio postproduction company whose credits include Netflix’s “Queen Charlotte” and HBO’s “The White Lotus,” is expanding its leadership team and talent roster.
Industry vet Doug Kent has been named partner and president of the privately owned company, which was founded in 1997.
It expanded its talent roster with re-recording mixers Joe Earle and Gabriel J. Serrano, following the recent addition of Christian P. Minkler. Nicole Zabala has joined the team as VP of strategy and business development.
Kent most recently served as a senior VP at Formosa Group, following 15 years as a senior VP at Technicolor.
“This is a remarkable opportunity to shape a lasting legacy in the industry,” said Kent of his new role. “It’s also an opportunity to foster a business that reflects the expansive culture of Los Angeles, one that better represents the city I live in and grew up in.

Mortal Kombat director Simon McQuoid is back at the helm for the sequel Mortal Kombat 2, and while the video game adaptation wrapped production back in January after a bumpy ride through the year of the strikes, it sounds like they’re doing some reshoots at the moment. Ludi Lin reprises the role of Liu Kang in the new film, and while doing the press rounds for the martial arts movie Art of Eight Limbs, where he co-stars with former TV Spider-Man Nicholas Hammond, Lin took a moment to hype Mortal Kombat 2 to the folks at Screen Rant, saying the sequel is bigger and better than its predecessor, and that Karl Urban’s performance as popular video game character Johnny Cage will “blow your socks off.”
The screenplay for Mortal Kombat 2 has been written by Jeremy Slater, who was the lead writer on the Marvel / Disney+ series Moon Knight.

Founded in 1946, Switzerland’s Locarno Film Festival is one of the world’s longest-running film festivals, known for its adventurous programming, exciting retrospectives, and nightly open-air screenings in the Piazza Grande, capable of seating 8,000 spectators. The latter is by no means the only screening spot, but it’s the location most associated with the festival.
Hosting world premieres and special screenings of highlights from Cannes, SXSW, and other early-year festivals, this year’s Piazza Grande selection includes the launch of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette portrait “The Flood,” starring Guillaume Canet and Mélanie Laurent; Bérénice Béjo-led thriller “Mexico 86”; Mohammad Rasoulof’s Cannes prizewinner “The Seed of the Sacred Fig”; actor Paz Vega’s directorial debut “Rita”; and the world premiere of Tarsem Singh’s restored recut of “The Fall.”

We're still waiting (and probably will be for a while longer) on a first look at some footage from Warner Bros./New Line's Mortal Kombat 2, but producer and co-creator of the iconic video game series, Ed Boon, has now taken to social media to share a teasing glimpse of one of the new characters who'll be debuting in the sequel, Kitana.
Her face is kept hidden, but we do get a look at the fan-favorite fighter's signature weapon and costume. Kitana will be played by Chilling Adventures of Sabrina actress Adeline Rudolph.
The Netflix series marked Rudolph's screen debut, but the Hong Kong-born model-turned-actress has also appeared in the CW’s Riverdale and Netflix’s Resident Evil series. She is also set to play the female lead in Millennium’s Hellboy: The Crooked Man.
Boon also revealed that he has seen an unfinished cut of the movie.

Apart from being a highly appreciated cult classic movie, Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood starring Leonardo DiCaprio has delivered a few of the most memorable scenes in the history of cinema. One among them is the intense scene involving DiCaprio’s Rick Dalton and the iconic flamethrower.

While the flamethrower scene became memorable for its dramatic flair, considering how Leonardo DiCaprio incinerated Manson cult member Susan Atkins (Mikey Madison) to death, it wasn’t as effortless as it was portrayed. Apparently, DiCaprio’s experience filming it was far from ordinary and bordered on a nightmare for the actor.

On a balmy Thursday night, at the corners of Broxton and Weyburn Avenues in Westwood Village, a smattering of movie lovers bathed in yellow and blue neon lights snapped photos of a marquee.
They came to pay last respects to the Fox Bruin Theater, whose 7:30 p.m. screening of Twisters would be its last, the first time the Streamline Moderne landmark would shutter since opening its doors in 1937.
Regency Theatres, which in 2010 swooped in to save the movie house from potential extinction, opted not to renew its lease on that 670-seat theater, nor the 1,400-seat Fox Village Theater across the street.
But the Village found a savior in director Jason Reitman, who earlier this year led a consortium of 35 fellow filmmakers who banded together to purchase the property, with plans to renovate it and eventually reopen. No timeline or details have yet been announced on the project.

Exclusive: Costa Ronin is joining the Season 5 cast of Apple TV+‘s For All Mankind as a new series regular.
Season 4 of For All Mankind picked up eight years after the events of Season 3, when Happy Valley rapidly expanded its footprint on Mars by turning former foes into partners. Now 2003, the focus of the space program turns to the capture and mining of extremely valuable, mineral-rich asteroids that could change the future of both Earth and Mars. But simmering tensions between the residents of the now-sprawling international base threaten to undo everything they were working towards.
Ronin will play Lenya, a Soviet politician and former cosmonaut. He joins fellow new series regular Mireille Enos as well as returning cast Joel Kinnaman, Wrenn Schmidt, Krys Marshall, Edi Gathegi, Cynthy Wu, Coral Peña, Toby Kebbell, Tyner Rushing, Daniel Stern and Svetlana Efremova.

As is the case with most below-the-line Oscar categories, bigger equals better when it comes to Best Production Design. The more lavish the sets, the more accurate the period detail, the more extravagant the designs, the more likely your film will win an Academy Award. Formerly known as Best Art Direction/Set Decoration, this prize goes to the production designer and set decorator, leaving the poor art directors on the outside looking in; perhaps that accounts for the title change. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2025 Oscar predictions for Best Production Design.)
This prize is often paired with Best Costume Design. Most recently, “Poor Things” pulled off this double play (Zsuzsa Mihalek was the winning production designer). It joined 10 other films this century to claim both prizes. Here’s the breakdown with the production designers names in brackets.

Updated: Westwood Village’s Bruin Theatre and Fox Village Theatre will screen their last films — for now — on Thursday as Regency Theatres’ lease comes to an end at the two historic Los Angeles venues.
Opened in 1937, the streamline-moderne style Bruin is being represented by commercial real estate firm Newmark, which repped the sale of the Fox Village. Steven Salas, managing director of Newmark, said the property is not formally on the market yet, so it hasn’t been decided whether it would be for lease or for sale. Several parties have expressed interest in the theater for “multiple uses,” Salas said, including Jason Reitman’s consortium.
With 670 seats, the Bruin smaller than the Fox Village Theatre across the street, which currently has about 1400 seats. Both venues have a long history of hosting movie premieres, while the Bruin also played an important role in Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

Sean Baker’s latest triumph is an Oscar frontrunner, and now finally the first trailer for “Anora” is here.
The highly-anticipated “Anora” won the Palme d’Or at Cannes 2024, and proved “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” breakout Mikey Madison is an actress to watch this awards season. Madison plays an exotic dancer and sex worker who marries the son of a Russian oligarch (Mark Eydelshteyn).
Vache Tovmaysa, Yura Borisov, and Baker’s frequent collaborator Karren Karagulian.
The feature was the first American film to win the Palme d’Or since Terrence Malick’s “Tree of Life” in 2011.
Writer/director Baker previously helmed Oscar-nominated film “The Florida Project,” groundbreaking iPhone movie “Tangerine,” and Simon Rex’s career-best “Red Rocket,” which also centered on sex work.

If you enjoyed the hyper-violent 20-minute finale of Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon A Time In Hollywood” and wondered if you could just have that for the whole movie, you have the movie of your dreams in Indian revenge actioner “Kill.” Relentless bloodletting is not novel to Bollywood cinema, but the volume & degree here might represent a dubious new milestone. As might the fact that “Kill” is one of the very few Indian films acquired for semi-wide release in North America, making its way to nearly 1000 screens.

Protestors for PETA disrupted Thursday night’s premiere of “Twisters” in Los Angeles, calling out a “distressing scene” in the film as an “inhumane” glorification of rodeos and for the use of live animals in the film.
The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) organization protested the LA premiere of the film at the Regency Village Theatre over the “distressing scenes” involving rodeo animals. Protestors wearing cow masks and carrying signs reading “Calves’ Necks Are Twisted at Rodeos” and “The Rodeo Hurts and Kills Animals” were positioned outside the theater.
But one protestor also found her way inside the screening and jumped in front of the audience while director Lee Isaac Chung was introducing the film’s cast, including Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powell, and Anthony Ramos, who were all in attendance.
IndieWire was present at the premiere, where the woman could be heard shouting “There’s no excuse for animal abuse.

Rumer Willis has boarded director Rohit Karn Batra’s gun crisis drama, The Gun on Second Street.
The indie, which already stars Poppy Delevingne and Tom Arnold, follows two Pittsburgh police partners and best friends called to an uneventful domestic violence dispute on Second Street. A violent scuffle quickly ensues as officer Tj Meadows III accidentally shoots and kills his partner, officer Kevin Cooper, with his backup gun.
Years later, no longer a cop and still traumatized, Meadows moves back to Pittsburgh and finds his way to Kevin’s widow, Kacie. Willis will play the role of Ashley Pullman, Meadow’s former partner with whom she shares a son.
The Gun on Second Street is produced by Guy J. Louthan of Ransom Films, with Rikin Shah executive producing.
Rumer Willis is also set to appear in the upcoming feature Broken Trail, opposite Gbenga Akinnagbe and Jeff Fahey. Her other screen...

France’s Deauville American Film Festival has announced a retrospective gathering 50 U.S. features that have challenged perceptions of the world to mark its 50th anniversary.
The selection ranges from D. W. Griffith’s 1916 silent epic Intolerance to Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, and also includes Ida Lupino’s groundbreaking 1950 rape drama Outrage as well as Spike Lee’s Do The Right Thing. (see full list below)
“Cinema has always made us dream, travel, desire, fantasize, laugh, cry. But how many films have been able to shake up our certainties, question our beliefs, question our prejudices and put our own views into perspective?,” said the festival.
“The Deauville American Film Festival wanted to highlight a selection of 50 films that have changed the way we look at the world,” it continued.

Joe Egan, who co-founded Stealers Wheel with Gerry Rafferty and co-wrote and sang on the enduring hit “Stuck in the Middle with You,” died July 6. He was 77. The news was shared on the late Rafferty’s official Facebook page, but no details were provided.
“Very sad news that the other half of Stealers Wheel, Joe Egan, passed away peacefully yesterday afternoon with his nearest and dearest around him,” read the post on the page run by Rafferty’s daughter, Martha. “I will always remember him as a sweet and gentle soul. May he rest in peace.”
Egan — who originally dreamed of soccer stardom — and Rafferty met as teenagers at St. Mirin’s Academy in their hometown of Paisley, Scotland, and formed Stealers Wheel in the early 1970s. Their first two singles stiffed, but the third would become a rock and pop standard.

Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio are two incredibly versatile movie stars who got their big break in the 90s. The era showed them proving their worth in the industry and their capabilities. DiCaprio was the absolute heartthrob with films like Romeo + Juliet and Titanic while Pitt impressed audiences with his performances in Se7en, 12 Monkeys, Legends of the Fall, and Fight Club.

Austin Butler is making a name for himself not just as a talented up-and-coming star, but as a man with a penchant for weird voices. Much like his "The Bikeriders" co-star Tom Hardy (a man who's given us a smorgasbord of weird voices in his time), Butler is showing promise as a master of what Hardy termed the "vocal silhouette." His "Dune: Part Two" voice simply demands further examination, for example, but it was his complete transformation for Baz Luhrman's "Elvis" that gave us the most significant vocal tone. In fact, Butler basically reinvented himself as the King of Rock n' Roll for the movie. After a five-month audition that was unlike any other for "Elvis," he disappeared into the character for three years and claimed to lose touch with who he really was by the end of it.
Still, all that dedication seems to have been worth it. Butler...

"Death Proof" is usually ranked lowest among Quentin Tarantino's directorial efforts, which is a shame since newbies might take that to mean it's not worth seeking out. (It absolutely is.) A 1970s exploitation homage initially released as part of his and Robert Rodriguez's failed 2007 "Grindhouse" double-feature experiment, the movie lends Tarantino's distinctive banter to a slasher about an over-the-hill stunt double, dubbed "Stuntman" Mike (Kurt Russell), who slays his victims using a rigged stunt vehicle.
"Death Proof" abides by the expectations of its genre for its first half, following Mike as he hunts his prey, not by stalking them under the cover of night but by schmoozing them up at a bar and cunningly striking when their defenses are down (but their blood-alcohol levels are up). It's only in its second half that the film stealthily -- and swiftly -- evolves into a women's empowerment story by way of a revenge thriller,...

Garth Ennis, the writer behind "The Boys" and "Preacher," has been called the Quentin Tarantino of comic books. On the surface, both men tell stories filled with violence, profane dialogue, crass comedy, and their fans love them for it. I've adored Tarantino since I first encountered him — no movie, from "Reservoir Dogs" to his latest (and favorite of his own films) "Once Upon A Time In Hollywood" — has broken that spell. My feelings on Ennis are more of a journey; I dismissed him in my younger days but I've since settled on the more positive side.
The comic that got me to give Ennis a second look is his 2018 war mini-series, "Sara" (drawn by Steve Epting and colored by Elizabeth Breitweiser). Ennis grew up reading war comics and now he writes them quite well.

For cinephiles who came of moviegoing age during the 1970s and/or '80s, there is a shortlist of movie stars that, if you were talented and fortunate enough to become a filmmaker of some renown, you'd give anything to direct. And if you grew up with a hankering for horror and science-fiction flicks, the name Kurt Russell was probably at or near the top of that list.
Russell wasn't always one of the cool kids. In fact, he was a literally uncool kid for Disney as the teenage star of family comedies like "The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes." Indeed, no one viewed Russell as a grown-up actor until he impressed in the title role of Carpenter's 1979 TV movie "Elvis." This did the trick. Two years later, Russell slipped under the scaly skin of laconic scoundrel Snake Plissken in Carpenter's dystopian actioner "Escape from New York." Then he went the...

Quentin Tarantino is arguably one of the best auteur directors who brings a distinct style to his films that is enjoyed by fans. With great films like Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill, Django Unchained, and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, the filmmaker has always maintained his integrity as a director who goes for original material.

Sony Pictures gave the first major studio presentation at the 2024 CineEurope trade show on Monday.

Among the films referenced were Danny Boyle’s zombie sequel “28 Years Later,” starring Cillian Murphy, Jodie Comer and Aaron Taylor-Johnson; Taika Waititi’s “Klara and the Sun,” starring Jenna Ortega; and Sam Mendes’ upcoming films about the four members of the Beatles, which O’Dell said would be “distinct, but interconnected.”

Today, Quentin Tarantino remains one of the most acclaimed directors in Hollywood, known not only to cinephiles, but also to people who occasionally enjoy a fun action or gory slasher. The mass appeal is what made the director so popular, but it doesn't take away from his creative genius.
The director once admitted that he will only make 10 movies in his career, and he hasn't released the last one yet. The other 9, however, will make a great addition to anyone's movie night. So check out the ratings below and find out which Tarantino films are the best to start with and which ones you might want to skip.
Grindhouse Presents: Death Proof (2007) – 64%
As dynamic and violent as one expects from Quentin Tarantino's movie, Grindhouse Presents: Death Proof failed to impress viewers for some reason. While the rating is still fresh, the 64% mark is a far cry from any of the director's other movies.

Since the release of Quentin Tarantino’s revisionist Western thriller The Hateful Eight in 2015, fans had been eagerly awaiting the director’s next project for a torturous four years. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019), his grandiose crime drama delves into the relationship between the Manson family murders and a fictional TV actor (& his stunt double).
It is not merely a film; it’s Tarantino’s cinematic celebration of an era—a star-studded tableau that emphatically stakes its claim as one of 2019’s best displays of acting talent. Under the skillful direction of casting director Victoria Thomas, whose ability to bring the fabled talents of Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio together to create a screen sensation, the cast of the movie was more brilliant than ever.

Just before Halloween back in 2022, it was announced that Willa Fitzgerald and Kyle Gallner – who both have experience working in the Scream franchise, as Fitzgerald was in the Scream TV series and Gallner appeared in the 2022 Scream movie – were set to star in the “cat and mouse thriller” Strange Darling. A few months ago, we learned that Magenta Light Studios will be giving Strange Darling a wide theatrical release in the United States on August 23rd – and now a trailer has arrived online to give us a preview of what this movie will have in store for us when it reaches the big screen in a couple months. You can check it out in the embed above.

Another weekend in the books, another disappointing opening for a much-anticipated horror movie. Warner Bros. released Ishana Night Shyamalan's "The Watchers" in theaters this past weekend, and given that the daughter of "The Sixth Sense" director M. Night Shyamalan was getting into the family business, there was excitement around this one. Unfortunately, the end result left much to be desired in the early going, both critically and commercially.
"The Watchers" opened to an estimated $7 million in its debut domestically. It opened against "Bad Boys: Ride or Die," which easily won the weekend with an impressive $56.5 million opening. Unfortunately, even though this seemed like an example of solid counterprogramming, Shyamalan's mysterious horror flick landed at number four on the charts, also placing behind "The Garfield Movie" ($10 million) and "If" ($8 million). Those movies were in their third and fourth weekends, respectively. Needless to say, this isn't what WB had in mind.

Julia Butters, known for her work in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and The Fabelmans, is in talks to join the Freaky Friday sequel at Disney, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
The studio first confirmed plans for the long-hoped-for film last year, and in March announced Nisha Ganatra of Welcome to Chippendales had been tapped to direct.
Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan, who starred in the original, were also in talks to return, though the studio has not officially confirmed any of its cast, including Curtis and Lohan. Disney had no comment on Butters’ casting.
Andrew Gunn, who produced the 2003 movie, will produce alongside former Disney exec Kristin Burr.
Curtis and Lohan have spoken openly of their aspirations for a Freaky Friday sequel for years. “We would only make something that people would absolutely adore,” Lohan told the New York Times in 2023.

Things are about to get freaky for Julia Butters.
The “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” standout has joined the cast of Disney’s “Freaky Friday” sequel, sources tell Variety. The project was officially confirmed in March, with Nisha Ganatra tapped to direct.
Ganatra most recently directed episodes of Hulu’s “Welcome to Chippendales.” Her other credits include the 2020 film “The High Note” with Dakota Johnson and Tracee Ellis Ross, along with 2019’s “Late Night,” starring Mindy Kaling and Emma Thompson.
Original stars Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan are in talks to reprise their roles from the 2003 film.
For years, Curtis and Lohan have been vocal about their desire to reunite for a follow-up to their body-swapping comedy. In March, Curtis shared a photo with Lohan to Instagram, tagging Disney and captioning the snap, “Duh! Ffdeux!”
“Freaky Friday” followed Curtis as straight-laced mom Tess and Lohan as rebellious daughter Anna.

Dakota Fanning is only 30 years old, but she's been acting professionally for 24 of them. A child actor who fortunately avoided the trap of the teen idol curse, Fanning successfully transitioned into more mature roles like Squeaky Fromme in Quentin Tarantino's "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood," Emma Collins in "The Equalizer 3," and as Marge Sherwood on "Ripley." Now, Fanning is starring in Ishana Shyamalan's feature directorial debut, "The Watchers," a dark fairytale about an artist named Mina who gets stranded in the woods and finds sanctuary with three strangers as they are all watched by mysterious, unseen creatures at night.
Fanning plays Mina, a messy, complicated, driven character that is a bit outside of the wheelhouse of what general audiences may be used to seeing her portray. The success of "The Watchers" hinges on whether or not the audience can identify with and root for Mina's survival.

Just last month, we learned that Glen Powell (Top Gun: Maverick), Margaret Qualley (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood), and Ed Harris (The Truman Show) had signed on to star in the revenge thriller Huntington for A24 and writer/director John Patton Ford. Now Huntington has gone into production, and Deadline has revealed that the cast also includes Jessica Henwick (Glass Onion), Topher Grace (That 70s Show), Zach Woods (Silicon Valley), and Raff Law (Masters of the Air). Details on the characters they’ll be playing have not been revealed.
Drawing inspiration from the 1949 crime comedy Kind Hearts and Coronets, Huntington will see Powell taking on the role of Becket Redfellow, the heir to a multi-billion-dollar fortune who will stop at nothing to get what he deserves… Or what he thinks he deserves. Kind Hearts and Coronets told the following story: When Louis D’Ascoyne Mazzini, who hails from a royal family,...

Sean Baker’s “Anora” is betting big with a fall release date.
The feature, which won the Palme d’Or at Cannes 2024, will be released October 18 from Neon, IndieWire can confirm. “Anora,” Sean Baker’s comic look at an exotic dancer and sex worker who marries the son of a Russian oligarch, will hit theaters next fall. The film will open in limited release on Oct. 18 from Neon.
It’s a lucky time of year for the indie studio. Neon previously launched “Parasite” on Oct. 11, debuted “Triangle of Sadness” on Oct. 7 and opened “Anatomy of a Fall” on Oct 13. Like “Anora,” all three of those films premiered at Cannes and won the Palme d’Or, the festival’s top honor. “Anora” was the first U.S. film to earn the prize since 2011’s “Tree of Life” from director Terrence Malick.

If the past decade of his career has proven anything, it’s that Ryan Gosling was born to play a silly, relatable guy. His performances as the penniless pianist Sebastian in ‘La La Land’ and the lovesick plastic doll Ken in ‘Barbie’ both rightfully earned him Oscar nominations. Both roles required a sense of boyish charm, which Gosling’s completely mastered over the years. His mass appeal has been heightened by the social media trend of male fans claiming Gosling is “literally them,” and adjusting their personalities to match his latest character. ‘The Fall Guy’ is no exception — Gosling whips out his impeccable comedic delivery skills to play stuntman Colt Seavers, who falls (no pun intended) victim to a career-altering injury on the set of a new action film. Not only does he quit his job, but he also breaks things off with his girlfriend, camerawoman Jody Moreno (Emily Blunt...
