Overall streaming numbers for July 8-14 came down a fair amount from the record-breaking previous week. HBO’s House of the Dragon, however, was virtually even with its prior viewing total — which was good enough to move it to the top spot for the first time.
House of the Dragon amassed 1.27 billion minutes of viewing on Max (not including viewing on HBO’s cable channels), just a smidge below the 1.3 billion it had the week before. With the two titles ahead of it the previous week, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F and Suits, each falling by significant amounts, the HBO show moved up to No. 1.
Suits fell by 28 percent week-to-week to 1.07 billion minutes of viewing on Netflix and Peacock, which was good for third place overall, slightly behind Bluey (1.08 billion minutes on Disney+) and just ahead of The Boys (1.05 billion for Prime Video), which had its fifth consecutive week over the billion-minute mark.

This summer’s hottest trend? Revising the value of your cable channels.
On Wednesday, Warner Bros. Discovery realized its cable networks were worth $9 billion less than it originally thought. On Thursday, Paramount Global reduced the book value of its own cable channels by nearly $6 billion. Wbd’s internal audit was triggered by its loss of NBA rights; Paramount recorded the “goodwill impairment charge” based on what Skydance is paying for the company and its networks. These changes do not impact cash flow.
With the giant accounting maneuver, Paramount Global posted adjusted earnings of 54 cents per share, well above the 12 cents per share anticipated by Wall Street. Without it, the company’s Q2 operating-income loss was a whopping $5.32 billion. Paramount whiffed on media analysts’ consensus expectation of $7.21 billion in revenue, reporting $6.813 billion.

Nielsen recorded its biggest week of streaming ever over the Fourth of July holiday, as all ten of the most-watched titles reached over a billion minutes viewed.
In total, the week led to more than 313B viewing minutes from July 1 to July 7 — the highest that Nielsen has ever recorded and, the company posits, possibly the largest weekly streaming total ever — led by Eddie Murphy’s Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, which topped the charts with 2.1B minutes viewed.
The No. 2 title elicits a bit of déjà vu, as Suits once again found itself on the charts with 1.5B minutes viewed. While that’s nowhere near the record-breaking performance the series saw over last year’s holiday week, it’s an impressive total likely induced by the fact that the final season finally landed on Netflix. Previously, only eight of nine seasons were available, with the ninth remaining solely on Peacock.

For the first time ever, every streaming title in Nielsen’s weekly top 10 ranking pulled in over 1 billion minutes viewed.
Per Nielsen, the week of July 1-7 recorded over 313 billion viewing minutes across streaming platforms. That is the highest level of streaming consumption ever in a single week since Nielsen began putting out its top 10 list in 2020.
July 7 was also the fourth-highest daily level of streaming viewership ever recorded by Nielsen. The only individual days to exceed it were: January 13, 2024—the most-streamed day on record—which included the NFL Wild Card playoff game on Peacock; and February 17 and 18, which was the post-Super Bowl weekend.
Leading the overall chart was the Netflix film “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F” starring Eddie Murphy, which pulled in a staggering 2.05 billion minutes viewed. Its nearest competition was “Suits,” which returned to the top of the chart with 1.5 billion minutes. “House of the Dragon” was next with 1.3 billion,...

The week that includes the July 4 holiday is usually a big one for streaming services — but it’s never been as big as this year.
Nielsen’s streaming content ratings show the week of July 1-7 as the biggest one ever since the measurement firm began regularly tracking streaming several years ago. TV users spent 313 billion minutes on streaming platforms for the week, and for the first time, every entrant in the top 10 overall titles had at least 1 billion minutes of viewing.
The previous biggest week came just seven days earlier, when seven of the overall top 10 crossed the billion-minute mark. Nielsen also says July 7 was the fourth-largest streaming day it has ever tracked, behind Jan. 13 — when Peacock had an exclusive NFL playoff game — and Feb. 17-18, which was both the Presidents Day holiday and had a cold snap keeping much of the country indoors.

The week of the 4th of July broke Nielsen streaming records, led by Eddie Murphy’s “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F.”
During the week of July 1-7, streaming viewership soared to 313 billion viewing minutes across platforms, ranking as the largest streaming consumption for a single week recorded by Nielsen’s Top 10 charts.
The uptick in viewing over the holiday weekend also boosted all 10 titles on the Nielsen overall most-watched streaming programs to exceed 1 billion viewing minutes for the first time ever. The biggest streaming audience of the week was seen on Sunday, July 7, which now holds the fourth largest daily streaming viewership ever recorded by Nielsen, behind Jan. 13, 2024, when the NFL Wild Card playoff game streamed on Peacock, and Super Bowl weekend.

In the age of streaming abundance, let there be no confusion — Netflix is still the undisputed king of the streaming game. The service has almost 280 million global subscribers, comfortably outpacing its closest competition, Prime Video, which has around 200 million subscribers, and remaining vastly ahead of its other competitors. This means that, for better or worse, Netflix has become the de facto winner of the streaming wars, and somewhat of a tastemaker in its own right. At the very least, it's the closest we'll get to the kind of monoculture we had back in the 90s when everyone was watching the same stuff. If a show or movie hits Netflix and manages to gain any traction, you can bet most people will be talking about it.
This has made things incredibly difficult for other companies trying to get a piece of the streaming action. So far, pretty much everyone else who's...

Da Bear.
FX made the third season of “The Bear” available in its entirety on Hulu on Wednesday, June 26, 2024, just as it did for Seasons 1 and 2 of the show about a Chicago sandwich spot turned fine-dining establishment. Getting people to scarf down the whole meal in one sitting worked — in the short term.
Nielsen’s streaming data for the week of June 24-30 finally caught up to those of us existing in the present on Thursday. No shade: That’s the TV-ratings currency company’s typical delay in streaming measurement.
Nielsen says “The Bear” was streamed for 1.2 billion viewing minutes over its first five days, and that two-thirds of its audience were between the ages of 18 and 49. That is traditionally the coveted demographic for advertisers — especially for those advertising on linear TV.

“Twisters” is sweeping audiences off their couches and into the theaters.
The standalone follow-up to “Twister” (1996) grossed over $80 million in its first weekend and was the third highest-grossing film of 2024.
Glen Powell, Daisy Edgar-Jones and Anthony Ramos lead the disaster film as a ragtag group of storm chasers. Jones plays Kate Carter, a once disaster-seeker turned to corporate weather pro, while Powell plays Tyler Owens, a viral “tornado wrangler.” The two team up with Javi, a longtime friend of Kate’s played by Anthony Ramos, to tackle the biggest twister Oklahoma’s seen in generations.

The Bear‘s entire third season was released June 26 on Hulu, and the Emmy-winning FX series quickly shot to No. 1 on Nielsen’s chart of streaming originals for the week of June 24-30 with 1.2 billion viewing minutes.
That was good for No. 3 overall, behind two Netflix-powered acquired titles, Your Honor (1.6B) and Dexter (1.5B).
After Your Honor first hit No. 1 the week of June 3 before being dethroned by Bridgerton with the release of the latter’s Season 3B, the legal thriller starring Bryan Cranston retook the top spot, though its weekly viewing minutes dipped for the first time since the series was released on Netflix on May 31.
Similarly, Dexter, which also is on Paramount+, returned to Netflix on June 19 after a three-and-a-half-year break, fueling the rise in its consumption from 802M minutes the week before.

In the parlance of the times, The Bear absolutely ate in the week of its third season premiere.
The FX-produced Hulu show had its biggest streaming week to date for the June 24-30 period. The Emmy-winning series, whose third season premiered June 27, racked up 1.23 billion minutes of viewing for the week — beating its previous high of 1.01 billion minutes shortly after its season two premiere last year.
The Bear was one of seven shows to score more than a billion minutes of viewing for the week, a rarity in the four-year history of Nielsen’s streaming rankings. Former Showtime series Your Honor continued its strong run, leading all titles with 1.58 billion minutes of viewing on Netflix and Paramount+. Another Showtime title, Dexter, saw its viewing rise by 84 percent from the previous week to 1.48 billion minutes.
The Boys (1.18 billion minutes), Bridgerton (1.14 million), Bluey (1.1 billion) and House of the Dragon (1.05 billion) also...

“The Bear” hit the Nielsen Streaming Top 10 charts with the launch of the hit show’s third season. For the week of June 24, the show pulled in 1.23 billion minutes watched which put it at No. 3 for the week.
The ranking is the latest good news for the culinary dramedy. The series recently broke the record for the most Emmy nominations for a comedy in a single year with 23.
Seven of the 10 shows in the overall top 10 chart for the week had over 1 billion minutes watched. The others were: No. 1-“Your Honor” (1.58 billion); No. 2-“Dexter” (1.48 billion); No. 4-“The Boys” (1.18 billion); No. 5-“Bridgerton” (1.14 billion); No. 6-“Bluey” (1.1 billion); and “House of the Dragon” (1.05 billion).

The opening weekend of “The Bear” Season 3 saw impressive viewership on Hulu, though the FX series was outpaced by “Your Honor” and “Dexter.”
As “The Bear” debuted the entirety of its third season on Hulu on June 27, the Jeremy Allen White-led series tallied up 1.2 billion viewing minutes on Hulu between June 24-30, ranking as the week’s third overall most-watched streaming program. However, viewership for “The Bear” was surpassed by both “Your Honor” and “Dexter,” which scored 1.58 billion and 1.48 billion viewing minutes, respectively, across Paramount+ and Netflix.
Though “Your Honor” climbed to become the week’s most-watched streaming program, viewership fell slightly from the 1.95 billion viewing minutes it tallied up the previous week. Notably, both “Your Honor” and “Dexter” are Showtime shows streaming Paramount+ that received a viewing bump after being added to Netflix.

In a record month for streaming, it’s not a big surprise that the two biggest platforms took high places in among media distributors in June.
What is notable, however, is just how high: Netflix ranked fourth among all media companies in share of TV use in the United States, its best mark to date in the three published Nielsen Media Distributor Gauges — and several months of data before that. YouTube, meanwhile, has ranked second since April but came closer to the lead spot (held by Disney) than it ever has.
With Bridgerton ranking as the most-watched streaming show of June and a surge in interest for library series Your Honor, Netflix gathered 8.4 percent of all TV viewing for the month. That moved it ahead of the fourth- and fifth-place distributors from May, Paramount Global and Warner Bros. Discovery, and just a tenth of a point behind NBCUniversal (8.5 percent). Paramount...

Law & Order is putting a new cop on the case for its 24th season.
Two-time Emmy nominee Maura Tierney is joining the NBC drama’s ensemble in the fall, playing an NYPD lieutenant. Her casting comes after Camryn Manheim departed the series after three seasons of playing Lt. Kate Dixon.
Tierney is the second new(ish) castmember on the long-running crime procedural; Tony Goldwyn joined L&o midway through last season after the departure of the show’s longest-serving castmember, Sam Waterston.
The actress has starred in two NBC series previously: NewsRadio from 1995-99 and ER from 1999-2009. She earned her first Emmy nomination for playing Abby Lockhart on ER in 2001. She also has a history, albeit a brief one, with Law & Order, having guest-starred in an episode of the show’s second season in 1991.
Tierney is currently co-starring in Twisters, which tore up the box office in its opening weekend.

HBO’s House of the Dragon is a series whose first season aired in 2022 and consisted of 10 episodes. The long-awaited second season finally premiered on Sunday, June 16, 2024, and the early critics’ reviews are now further supported by audience scores, which are amazingly good.
The series, as you surely know, is a spin-off series related to Game of Thrones, and it has been welcomed by both fans and critics, making it yet another hit series for the streaming service. But, while the reactions to the premiere – and the second season in general – have been amazing, we have reported that the premiere saw a drop in viewership, but despite that – the fans can rejoice!
Namely, with HBO being a television program as well as a streaming service, it is much easier to gather the viewership ratings for HBO’s shows than it is for Netflix’s or Disney+’s shows, so we have some information.

Bryan Cranston as Michael Desiato in Your Honor. Photo credit: Andrew Cooper/Showtime. After running for two seasons on Showtime, Your Honor has become a big winner on Netflix, getting more streaming minutes than any other content on the service in its streaming debut last month. Not only has this drawn new attention to the show, it’s also opened up discussions for a potential third season, though any such decision won’t likely come soon. Unsurprisingly, one of the factors helping drive the show’s popularity is its star, Bryan Cranston. After all, with Breaking Bad still drawing big binge numbers, people are clearly drawn to Cranston and his characters. While he was making Your Honor, a big part of his role — similar to Breaking Bad— was the physical transformation of his character over time; in Your Honor’s second season, the character looked radically different, as the show...

In the first week of availability of the “House of the Dragon” Season 2 premiere, the series jumped to the No. 4 position on the Nielsen Streaming Top 10. The series hit 1.2 billion minutes watched from June 17 to 23.
That’s up from 741 million minutes in the previous window, during which the episode was only available for a few hours, as new installments release weekly on Sunday night. Therefore, this week’s total also accounts for the first few hours of availability of Season 2’s second episode. It should also be noted that all streaming totals for “House of the Dragon” represent only a portion of the show’s viewership, as it also airs on HBO’s linear channel.

June was a big month for streaming, led in equal part by original and acquired programming.
Bridgerton led another week on the Nielsen streaming charts from June 17-23, although the series was down about a billion minutes viewed versus the week prior, racking up 2.5 billion. As expected, a majority of that viewing came from the last four episodes of Season 3, which debuted June 13.
It was one of five titles to surpass 1 billion minutes viewed during this interval, three of which were originals — all from different platforms. In fact, Nielsen also reported that the top four slots were taken by titles with less than 30 episodes, which is a testament to the strength of their audiences.
Your Honor came in second, having jockeyed with Bridgerton over the last few weeks for the top spot. The Showtime series has seemingly found a new lease on life after landing on Netflix, managing 1.9B minutes viewed,...

HBO’s House of the Dragon hit its highest mark to date in Nielsen’s streaming ratings for June 17-23.
The series racked up 1.23 billion minutes of viewing on Max for the week after its season two premiere (and including a few hours of viewing for the second episode on June 23). HotD‘s previous best showing was 1.02 billion minutes midway through its first season. Streaming figures for the show don’t include linear viewing on HBO.
The 1.23 billion minutes for House of the Dragon placed it fourth overall for the week, behind repeat leader Bridgerton (2.47 billion minutes), Your Honor (1.95 billion) and Prime Video’s The Boys (1.29 billion). About 60 percent of Bridgerton’s total came from the final four episodes of season three, which premiered June 13. With its release of Season 2’s second episode on the last day of the measurement period, HBO’s House of the Dragon found its way back onto Nielsen’s overall U.S. streaming ranking.
For the week of June 17, HotD racked up 1.23 billion minutes viewed on Max across 12 available episodes, which was good enough for No. 4 on the overall streaming chart — trailing Bridgerton, Your Honor and The Boys.

It can’t be overstated how iconic Bryan Cranston’s performance as Walter White was, which deservingly earned the Drive star a whopping six Emmy wins. Unfortunately, it meant that his following performances and projects would be inevitably compared to his Breaking Bad counterpart.
As a result, his first major drama series after Bb, Your Honor, had the misfortune of being compared to arguably one of the greatest TV shows of all time. While its first season ended up becoming Cranston’s first-ever rotten show on the Tomatometer, showrunner Peter Moffat’s brilliant pitch ensured the actor was on board for a second season.

Bryan Cranston is one of the few remaining television stars of the old guard who has earned enough spots to be regarded with awe and veneration even among the new-age, streaming-era audience of modern television. Without his performance in Breaking Bad, the industry would have been a brittle thing of lesser significance.

From Walter White in Breaking Bad and Michael Desiato in Your Honor, Bryan Cranston seems to be pretty keen when it comes to damaged individuals. But while the former is a landmark in television history, Your Honor, which was Cranston’s return to TV after 7 years, had some big shoes to fill, which unfortunately it didn’t end up doing.
However, as opposed to season 1, which became his first-ever rotten show with a score of 58% on the Tomatometer, the sequel served as a notable improvement. For that, we have one cast member to thank, who went toe-to-toe with the 6-time Emmy winner and overcame one major challenge.

Fire Country is coming to Netflix. Season 1 of CBS’ popular drama will be available on Netflix in the US beginning August 1 in a deal made by series producer CBS Studios. This is an additional domestic streaming window for Fire Country, co-created and starring Max Thieriot, whose first two seasons are on Paramount+. It is designed to give the show additional exposure ahead of its Oct. 18 Season 3 premiere on CBS.
Paramount Global has been the most open to content windowing among the vertically integrated traditional media companies, with CBS Studios at the forefront of that, opening non-exclusive streaming windows for some of its current series on Netflix in the US after selling the shows internationally.
In a similar move, the studio in September 2020 licensed the first seasons of its CBS series Evil and The Unicorn to Netflix in advance of the shows’ second seasons on CBS that had been delayed by the pandemic.

Streaming accounted for 40.3% of all TV usage in the U.S in June, per a monthly report from Nielsen. That marks not only the highest proportion of streaming viewership ever recorded in the three years Nielsen began tracking, but the best performance for any single category of viewership. Previously, the record belonged to cable, which reached 40.1% of TV usage in June 2021.
Netflix, largely driven by “Bridgerton” in the month of June but with several other high-performing titles, was the most-watched traditional streaming service of the month with 8.4% of all viewership, but YouTube outranked it with 9.9%.
With less than one-third of Netflix’s viewership, Amazon Prime Video trailed with 3.1%, and Hulu was next with 3%. Disney+ and Tubi each made up 2% of viewership and were followed by the Roku channel (1.5%), Max (1.4%), Peacock (1.2%), Paramount+ (1.1%) and Pluto (0.8%). 6% of viewership fell into a miscellaneous streaming category. (Note: Nielsen measures viewership on U.S. television sets.

Streaming platforms achieved another milestone in June, collectively accounting for more than 40 percent of all TV use in the United States — the first time that’s happened.
Viewers spent 40.3 percent of their time with streamers for the month, setting a record for usage on any platform, according to Nielsen’s Gauge rankings. Cable hit 40 percent even in Nielsen’s second-ever Gauge three years ago, but no platform had ever gone above that mark.
Conversely, traditional TV platforms — broadcast and cable — combined for their lowest combined share of usage in June at 47.7 percent. Cable had 27.2 percent of all TV viewing, and broadcast was at 20.5 percent (vs. 28.2 percent and 22.3 percent a month earlier). Other TV use, including gaming and physical media playback, made up the remaining 12 percent.

Streaming isn’t just chillin’ this summer, it’s breakin’ records.
In June, streaming accounted for 40.3 percent of the total TV and streaming usage as measured by Nielsen. It’s a new record (since Nielsen launched The Gauge in May 2021) for any single category, besting the 40.1 percent put up by cable in June 2021. In other words, streaming is now bigger than cable was (a bit) more than three years ago.
Netflix was the big gainer in June 2024. Surprise, surprise. Led by the new “Bridgerton” episodes and the acquired Showtime series “Your Honor,” Netflix grew its share of the overall pie by 0.8 basis points and climbed to 8.4 percent of all TV usage. (It hit 8.5 percent in July 2023.)
Amazon Prime Video got a 0.1 share-point bump from “The Boys.” Peacock’s share grew by the same amount. Max rode “House of the Dragon” to an additional 0.2 share points in June; the same growth was seen at Disney+.

Streaming viewership accounted for a record 40.3% of TV usage in June, according to Nielsen’s latest edition of The Gauge, beating the previous single category record previously set by cable. It’s the highest share of TV that The Gauge has ever reported.
Nielsen reports that four streaming services grew their usage by double-digits in June — Disney+ (+14.8%), Tubi (+14.7%), Netflix (+11.8%) and Max (+11.0%).
Summer usually sees a rise in streaming, especially for younger audiences, which is what seems to be happening once again. The four services mentioned above can attribute 20% or more of their growth to young audiences, likely, as Nielsen pointed out, because of additional free time for kids and teens due to the end of the school year.
Thanks to this uptick in streaming, which increased by 6% compared to May, TV usage overall also jumped 2.1% compared to the month prior.

Time spent streaming in the US in June accounted for 40.3% of total TV usage, the highest share yet on Nielsen’s The Gauge monthly viewership report since it launched three years ago.
Streaming viewership climbed 6% since May and added 1.5 share points, powered by younger viewers where the two to 11-year-old bracket saw a 16% month-on-month rise due in no small part to the start of summer holidays.
The 40.3% share marked the highest by any category since cable reached 40.1% in June 2021, the report’s authors said on Tuesday.
