Justin Baldoni originally had one writer in mind to adapt “It Ends With Us” when his Wayfarer Studios optioned the novel in 2019: its author, Colleen Hoover.
“I said, ‘If anybody should write this, it should be you. This is a story that you made in honor of your mom,’” the filmmaker told TheWrap. “She thought about it for a while, and then she decided that she was too close to it.”
Hoover’s own mother was a victim of domestic violence, an experience Hoover has said inspired her to write the novel in 2016. The now-bestselling author said that this was the hardest book she has ever written, and one that she wanted to scrap and rewrite several times because she, too, fell in love with the character that was inevitably the abuser.

The first feature-length film adaptation of a Colleen Hoover novel, It Ends with Us, debuted this weekend. The film, adapted to screen by Christy Hall, who also wrote and directed her first feature in this year’s Daddio, follows Lily Bloom (Blake Lively), who overcomes a traumatic childhood to start a new life in Boston where she can accomplish her lifelong dream of opening her own flower shop. A chance encounter with a dashing neurosurgeon, Ryle Kincaid (Justin Baldoni), sparks an intense connection, but as the two fall in love, Lily begins to uncover the dark side of Ryle that reminds her of her abusive upbringing. When Lily’s first love, Atlas Corrigan (Brandon Sklenar), reenters her life, her relationship with Ryle comes to a boiling point. Lily soon realizes she must learn to rely on herself to make the best choice for her future.

Dakota Johnson’s venture into the superhero genre with Madame Web might have been forgetful, but the actress returned to the big screen with a small-scale new indie project. Johnson starred in the independent drama film, Daddio, alongside Sean Penn.

Sometimes, you go into a movie knowing its entire plot already. Justin Baldoni’s “It Ends with Us” certainly isn’t trying to conceal the story laid bare in the film’s trailer — all of it based on the 2016 bestseller by Colleen Hoover that was a smash amongst the BookTok faithful — leading to some delicate choices to keep things moving and interesting over the course of more than two hours of running time. Armed with a script by “Daddio” filmmaker Christy Hall, “It Ends with Us” manages to sensitively handle its delicate subject matter, though largely at the cost of a more intricate narrative.
The film begins with Lily Bloom (Blake Lively), a New England florist who connects instantly with neurosurgeon Ryle Kincaid. Their first interaction on a Boston rooftop is almost a meet-cute — except that Lily’s dad died just a few days prior, and Ryle’s carrying his...

There wasn’t a lot new opening this weekend specialty-wise but few notable holdovers continued to crank in moderate release, namely Kalki 2898 Ad, which is on fire, as well as Thelma and Kinds of Kindness.
Kalki will end at No. 8 on 925 screens in week two, the second weekend in the top 10 for the Telugu sci-fi epic from Prathyangira Cinemas, which was No. 5 a week ago. That’s unusual, as Indian films tend to do most of their business opening weekend. Kalki, also outgrossed Kill, a Hindi action film that debuted this weekend.
With a $1.79 million gross and a cume of $16 million, Kalki is one of the highest grossing Indian film in North America in well over a year, according to data provided by Comscore. Hugely popular Rrr in 2022 and Animal last year both ended their runs with about $15 million domestic. Paathan hit $17.5 million in 2023. Baahubali 2: The Conclusion took in $20 million in 2017.

Sean Penn rarely grants interviews — he and the press haven’t always gotten along, to say the least — but last week, at his home in Malibu, the venerated actor and filmmaker sat down with The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast for an in-depth conversation about his life, career and most recent project, Daddio, an indie, released last Friday, of which he is particularly proud.
Seated in a small, light-filled room that he recently re-designed himself, the walls of which are covered with photos of his late parents, his two children and himself alongside many of world figures he has encountered in his travels as an activist, Penn, sporting a shock of white hair, puffed on cigarettes, spoke softly and was far warmer than his reputation would suggest he’d be. At 63, thrice divorced and currently single, he seems to have found a measure of peace — at least when one...

Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com appears on “The Morning Mess” with Scott Thompson on Wbgr-fm on June 27th, reviewing new films “Daddio,” with Dakota Johnson and Sean Penn, and the A24 release “Janet Planet.” Both in theaters since June 28th.
Rating: 4.5/5.0
In “Daddio,” Dakota Johnson is a woman, coming into JFK International Airport in New York City, and gets a cab with the driver man (Sean Penn). During the journey into midtown Manhattan, they start to get to know each other, and the conservation becomes observational and philosophical. When a bad accident delays their journey, several breakthroughs are made, and several undeniable truths create some discomfort. The truth does hurt, but it also can set you free.

“Inside Out 2” (Disney) in its third week will gross $57.4 million, with “A Quiet Place: Day One” (Paramount) estimating $53 million. The last time two films grossed over $50 million on the same weekend was last July, when “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” opened. Before that? 2017.
This is rare because distributors like to space out films with this potential. Even though it’s not a direct competitor, Paramount likely opted to open its prequel two weeks after Pixar. No one expected “Inside Out 2” to be this strong at this point ($469 million domestic after only 17 days).
This is summer the way it’s supposed to be. Three films opened to over $50 million over four weeks, and “Despicable Me 4” (Universal) opening Wednesday should make it four over five weeks. It justifies more optimism for the future than we’ve had for a long time.
That’s reason to be pleased, but not rapturous. Last year,...

Two Indian films flexed at the domestic box office — and when they hit they really do hit, buoying exhibitors through good times and bad — with Kinds Of Kindness hitting no. 10 in a major expansion and Thelma not far behind.
Kalki 2898 Ad, a Telugu sci-fi epic from Prathyangira Cinemas, is looking at an estimated $5.4 million on 1,049 screens for the three-day weekend, at no. 5. It’s also approaching a cume of $11 million including Wednesday previews and Thursday opening day, one of the best ever openings of an Indian film in North America.
Written and directed by Nag Ashwin, Kalki is toplined by superstars Prabhas with Deepika Padukone and Amitabh Bachchan. As Deadline has reported, this is India’s most expensive film ever.
Jatt & Juliet 3, the latest instalment of the Punjabi romantic comedy franchise, from White Hill Studios, is at no. 9 with $1.8 million for the weekend at just 143 locations, and a $1.9 million cume,...

Things had been looking up for the entire month of June, and they ended on a high note with two movies making more than $50 million this weekend, the first time that’s happened since “Barbenheimer” last summer. Read on for the weekend box office report.
Despite the introduction of a new prequel to a popular franchise, Pixar’s animated sequel “Inside Out 2” held onto the top spot with another $57.4 million, down 43% from last weekend. Last week, “Inside Out 2” crossed the $400 million mark ahead of the weekend, and this weekend’s take helped push it to $469.3 million, a showing that’s on par with last year’s “Barbie” and “The Super Mario Bros. Movie.” We’ll have to see if “Despicable Me 4” opening domestically on Wednesday puts the brakes on Pixar’s latest hit, though it won’t have any problem getting to $500 million and more.

Writer/director Christy Hall’s “Daddio” follows, in real-time, a 90-minute NYC cab ride from JFK airport to 44th Street between 9th and 10th Avenues. During that period, the camera rarely leaves the taxi as driver Sean Penn and passenger Dakota Johnson get to know each other during an extended conversation that yields surprising revelations for both the characters and the audience. The strength of Hall’s dialogue is not surprising given her background as an acclaimed playwright, but what really makes “Daddio” work is the way the performances are served by the visual style, as the lights and colors of New York City play off of the actors’ faces in a hypnotic, almost musical fashion; Phedon Papamichael‘s dreamy cinematography keeps the city alive as a character outside without ever detracting from the emotional intimacy of what’s going on inside the cab.

Plot: A woman (Dakota Johnson) and a talkative cabbie (Sean Penn) have a deep conversation while stuck in an endless New York traffic jam.
Review: A few months ago, Dakota Johnson suffered the worst reviews of her career for her superhero flop Madame Web. She’s been open about how she’ll never do anything like that again due to how badly she felt burned by its reception, doubling down on her commitment to indie fare. Indeed, if you watch Dakota Johnson in Daddio, a movie she co-produced, you can see how effective she can be if given material that suits her.
Written and directed by Christy Hall, Daddio is a two-hander one that takes place entirely in a cab travelling from JFK International Airport to an apartment in Manhattan. The film revolves around Johnson’s unnamed passenger, billed as “girlie,” a young woman returning to New York after a trip to see her sister.

Sean Penn had been “miserable” at work since 2008 — and then “Daddio” came along.
Penn told the New York Times that 2008’s “Milk” was the “last time I had a good time” making a feature, prior to his new indie film with co-star and producer Dakota Johnson.
“I went 15 years miserable on sets,” Penn said. “‘Milk’ was the last time I had a good time.”
The infamously candid star continued, “I feel like an actor who is playing a leading role and is a known actor and is being paid well has a leadership position on a film and you’ve got to show up with energy and be a bodyguard for the director in some way. I was faking my way through that stuff and that was exhausting. Mostly what I thought was just, ‘What time is it? When are we going to get off?'”

The indie market is feeling pretty good. A big film from India Kalki 2898 Ad may unseat Rrr’s North American opening weekend. June Squibb-starrer Thelma is blowing through midweek shows and stands at $3.75 million heading into week 2 steady at 1,280 theaters. Searchlight Pictures Kinds Of Kindness by Yorgos Lanthimos (Poor Things) starring Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons jumps to 500 screens from five after the best limited opening of the year last weekend.
Annie Baker’s Janet Planet from A24 goes from 2 screens to 300 and a handful of interesting indies open in limited release from Catherine Breillat‘s Last Summer to Jake Paltrow’s June Zero. Things are still quite tough but there’s room for optimism. Not clear if that will last, but it’s nice..

Sean Penn and Dakota Johnson star in a two-hander that takes place in a New York City cab, as cabbie Penn drives a young passenger (Dakota Johnson) to her mid-town home from the airport. Along the way, they engage in a witty, sharp back-and-forth conversation, where the beautiful young woman holds her own against the talkative, opinionated older cabbie. Their conversation is wide-ranging at first but eventually centers on the relationships between men and women. Almost from the start, she is getting texts from her boyfriend, obnoxious horny, drunken texts, that she seems mostly reluctant to engage with. These two very different people, the older cabbie with old school attitudes and a young successful woman, chat, trade views, share secrets in a kind of competition, and so bare their souls to each other,...

An Intimate Setting The entirety of Daddio takes place within the confines of a taxi, making it an intense and intimate journey. A challenging endeavor no matter who is doing it, let alone your debut feature, writer-director Christy Hall’s “Daddio” is an intimate, two-hander that, for nearly its entire 100-minute runtime, takes place within the confines of a taxi. Dakota Johnson’s Character Johnson portrays a hardened New Yorker who isn’t even given a name; she’s credited simply as Girlie. Known only as Girlie, the woman gets a cab from JFK and settles in for the long ride to Midtown. Her...

Dakota Johnson stars as a young woman catching a taxi ride from JFK airport into Manhattan after a visit to see family. Behind the wheel is Sean Penn’s weathered but wise cabbie, eager to learn what life has brought his fare so far. Over the course of their journey, director Christy Hall’s debut film Daddio unfolds almost entirely within the confines of the cab, following an intimate conversation that develops between passenger and driver.
Starting off as polite small talk, the exchange grows deeper as frustrations and shared experiences come to light. Johnson’s character reveals past pains while still healing from current heartaches. Through it all, Penn listens with the understanding of someone who’s heard many tales over the years on the streets. His own regrets and what-ifs surface too in this rare chance to unfold his story.

Christy Hall was a playwright living in New York City — which means she had several side jobs, including walking dogs and bartending. “There’s a great quote saying, ‘you can make a killing in theater, but you can’t make a living,’” she notes. She had always dreamed of working in film and television, but it never felt completely realistic to her.
Today, Hall is the writer-director of “Daddio,” an acclaimed two-hander starring Sean Penn as a taxi driver named Clark and Dakota Johnson as his passenger, known only as Girlie. The film is both a love letter to New York and a reminder of the importance of human connection set almost entirely inside a cab ride from JFK Airport to Manhattan. The two strangers reveal secrets, offer encouragement and display both humor and vulnerability over the course of the film, which was shot in just 16 days.

A single location two hander is quite the undertaking for a feature directorial debut. But such is the path writer-director Christy Hall chose with Daddio. Add in the fact that the location in question is a cab, liming the visual appeal, and keeping the characters stationary for 99% of the movie, and you have very little margin for error. If nothing else, it makes for an exciting creative challenge, working within those constraints.

Daddio Plot
On paper, Daddio is about as simple as they come. Girlie (Dakota Johnson) lands at JFK Airport and gets in a cab to take her home to Manhattan. During the drive, she and her driver Clark (Sean Penn) engage in an unexpectedly deep and personal conversation, focusing on love and some of the important relationships – past and present – in both of their lives.

Nothing fancy, no pyrotechnics or sudden plot twists—just a wizened old cabbie and his female, millennial-aged passenger making their way from J.F.K. to midtown Manhattan, slowly revealing themselves and challenging each other’s assumptions. To help pass the time during an ugly traffic jam, they engage in a friendly game of conversational one-upmanship, each sharing details about their own life and offering perceptive observations about the other’s. Lightly flirtatious small talk progresses toward the confessional, and gradually an intimacy forms that’s specific to people who know they won’t see each other again.
Such is the premise of writer-director Christy Hall’s debut feature, Daddio, a film as tedious and predictable as its traffic-clogged Long Island Expressway setting. As Clark, the straight-talking chauffeur, Sean Penn turns in a relaxed, un-showy performance that stands in contrast to Dakota Johnson’s more studied work as the troubled...

A lone woman gets off a plane, trudges through a buzzing airport, and catches a cab. You don’t need to know she’s landed at JFK International Airport to know she’s a New Yorker, because within three minutes of the opening of Christy Hall’s “Daddio,” that lone woman has decisively turned off the annoying in-cab television that primarily exists to orient out-of-towners to what’s happening in the city. In that single moment, we learn more about who she is than we do during the interminable cab ride (and film) that follows.
The one thing we never learn: her name. Instead, star and producer Dakota Johnson is listed in the credits simply as “Girlie,” even though no one ever refers to her as such during the claustrophobic outing that unspools over the next 101 minutes. And who would bother to call her by her actual name? The only...

In a New York Times profile to promote his film “Daddio,” actor and activist Sean Penn griped about how things in Hollywood have changed since he starred in “Milk” in 2008. He said the industry has become “timid and artless,” and he’s been “miserable” on sets for the past 15 years.
In the interview, Penn told writer Maureen Dowd that he focused more on journalism and political activism after “Milk,” because he was having a bad time in the film industry.
“I went 15 years miserable on sets,” he said. “‘Milk’ was the last time I had a good time.”
Penn won his second Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance as Harvey Milk, who as a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors was the first openly gay elected official in California and was assassinated by a disgruntled political opponent in 1978.

Climbing on the success ladder with a range of diverse roles across several genres, Dakota Johnson has now begun testing her producing skills with her next film, Daddio. Starring herself alongside Sean Penn, the upcoming drama flick has already generated sufficient interest for its cast involving only the two primary actors and a plot revolving around and taking place mostly within a cab in New York City, setting the stage for an unmatched depth of character development.

Fresh off her turn in Marvel‘s maligned “Madame Web,” Dakota Johnson is returning to indies with Christy Hall’s feature directorial debut “Daddio.” Sean Penn co-stars as a lone-wolf taxi driver and old-guard New Yorker who picks up Johnson’s character, Girlie, from JFK. On the journey back to Brooklyn, they share a heart-to-heart about life, love, sex, relationships, and more.
For Johnson, working with Hall was no different from working with more established filmmakers. “Well, it’s different every time. It depends on the person,” Johnson told IndieWire. “Sometimes you would never guess that it was somebody’s first feature, and sometimes it can be really challenging.” Production took place in just 16 days and primarily on a soundstage. Not only does Johnson star, but she also serves as a producer, alongside her TeaTime Pictures co-founder Ro Donnelly.
“This is, it’s just such a gem of a project.

Dakota Johnson, her producing partner Ro Donnelly and writer-director Christy Hall were on hand to celebrate the New York premiere of their upcoming film, Daddio, at the Tribeca Festival on Monday night.
The film, which also stars Sean Penn, follows Johnson’s Girlie as she gets in a cab, driven by Penn’s Clark, to take her from John F. Kennedy airport to her midtown Manhattan apartment. Over the course of their ride, the two have a “life-altering conversation” about the important relationships in their lives.
Johnson told The Hollywood Reporter that she was drawn to Daddio because of “the idea of humans being strangers and being so vulnerable with each other and connecting with each other and having a sort of life-altering conversation.”
The Madame Web star also produced the film alongside Donnelly through their TeaTime Pictures banner. “It was amazing,” she said of producing and acting in the film.

There have been plenty of documentaries about fashion designers in the past. Much like rock stars, fashion designers are creative types that always find themselves in interesting stories. And that’s especially the case for Diane von Furstenberg, who is the latest designer to the doc treatment.

Dakota Johnson rose to prominence in the Fifty Shades trilogy and captured audiences’ interest as an actress. She has gone on to star in small-budget indie darlings such as Our Friend, The Peanut Butter Falcon, Cha Cha Real Smooth, and The Lost Daughter. The actress recently transitioned into the superhero genre with Madame Web.
Dakota Johnson plays Cassandra Webb in Madame Web
Unfortunately, the film turned out to be mediocre and a big box office bomb. Marvel fans deemed it one of the worst entries in the franchise, and they have mocked several unintentionally funny moments in the film. But it seems all that chatter about the film has boosted its interest among general audiences as the film has shot to Number 1 on the Netflix charts.

Sony Pictures Classics announced on Wednesday that it will release Nathan Silver’s acclaimed comedy Between the Temples, starring Jason Schwartzman (Asteroid City) and Carol Kane (The Dead Don’t Die), in theaters nationwide on August 23.
The film will open against Zoë Kravitz’s debut feature Blink Twice (Amazon MGM Studios), the animated pic 200% Wolf (Viva Pictures), the remake of The Crow starring Bill Skarsgärd (Lionsgate), and the drama The Forge from Affirm Films.
Slated to make its New York debut at Tribeca in June, after playing both Sundance and Berlin to great reviews, Between the Temples follows Ben (Schwartzman), a forty-something cantor losing his voice and possibly his faith. Struggling to meet the expectations of his rabbi, congregation, and not one but two Jewish mothers (Caroline Aaron and Dolly de Leon), Ben finds his world turned upside down when his grade school music teacher re-enters his life as an adult bat mitzvah student.

Looking for a genuinely heart-pounding, inventive blockbuster for your summer movie-watching schedule? Consider something classic: Tom Tykwer’s clever 1999 thriller “Run Lola Run.” In celebration of the film’s 25th anniversary, Sony Pictures Classics announced Friday that they will reissue the film in theaters on June 7, timed to coincide with the film’s original U.S. release. The anniversary reissue will feature a new Dcp from the 4K restoration, “created in collaboration with the filmmakers.”
Written and directed by Tykwer, “Run Lola Run” was a breakout smash hit for both the filmmaker and his star Franka Potente. Per today’s announcement, at the time of its original release, the film was “hailed for its experimental structure, propulsive techno score, and Potente’s fierce performance as the titular, flame-haired heroine.” IndieWire’s review from 1999 hailed its “clever, wholly unique narrative concept” which “instantly makes it one of the more original, unpretentious...

Netflix has unleashed a new trailer for the Richard Linklater and Glen Powell-written comedy ‘Hit Man.’
Oscar-nominated director Richard Linklater’s sunlit neo-noir stars Glen Powell as strait-laced professor Gary Johnson, who moonlights as a fake hitman for the New Orleans Police Department. Preternaturally gifted at inhabiting different guises and personalities to catch hapless people hoping to bump off their enemies, Gary descends into morally dubious territory when he finds himself attracted to one of those potential criminals, a beautiful young woman named Madison (Adria Arjona). As Madison falls for one of Gary’s hit man personas — the mysteriously sexy Ron — their steamy affair sets off a chain reaction of play-acting, deception, and escalating stakes.
