It Ends With Us, starring Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni, has been blocked from theatrical release in Qatar due to its kissing scenes, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
The country’s censorship committee decided to ban the Sony Pictures and Wayfarer Studios’ film, which has a PG-13 rating in the U.S. Qatar has strict censorship rules and has previously banned other hit films including Barbie, Spider-Man: Across the Spiderverse, Anyone But You, Eternals, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse Of Madness, No Hard Feelings, Lightyear and more.
It Ends With Us, also directed by Baldoni, focuses on the sensitive issue of domestic violence and a woman’s internal battle between deciding to stay in a toxic relationship or leave it. The film, based on author Colleen Hoover’s 2016 best-seller, also includes multiple kissing scenes and non-graphic sex scenes.
The romantic drama opened in theaters in the United States on Friday.

A frosty start to the summer movie season was devastating for AMC Theatres, the world’s biggest exhibitor.
The theater chain’s quarterly earnings were severely impacted by a lack of blockbusters, with studio films like “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” “The Fall Guy” and “Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1″ all collapsing at the box office. AMC is placing much of the blame on the actors and writers strikes, which delayed production for months last year and left theaters with fewer big movies to show in 2024.
Revenue at the theater chain fell 23.5% to $1.03 billion during the three-month period ending in June, down from $1.35 billion in the prior-year period. Net loss for the three months also widened to $32.8 million compared with a profit of $8.6 million for the quarter ended June 2023. Adjusted Ebitda stood at $29.4 million, down sharply from the $182.5 million in adjusted Ebitda that AMC reported in the prior-year quarter. Attendance also dropped precipitously,...

Marvel chief Kevin Feige has repeatedly shown the MCU’s timeline as ‘The Sacred Timeline’ and has designated Earth 616 to the franchise’s main timeline. While the franchise is in its multiverse saga at the moment and has come into contact with various realities, the main MCU starting from Iron Man has the Earth 616 designation.
However, Feige may be wrong about the number as there are fewer proofs of the franchise actually belonging to that timeline. The 616 designation is canonical to the Marvel comics universe which the MCU deviates from. Ms. Marvel star Iman Velani also pointed this out and mentioned that she has argued with Feige over this.

“Superhero fatigue” is a nebulous concept that for at least a decade now has cropped up whenever a blockbuster comic book movie underperforms — or flops. But in the last two years, as disappointment has become a new normal for DC and even mighty Marvel, so too have claims that superhero fatigue has finally set in.
With two exceptions, every superhero film released since the start of 2023 has disappointed. None have topped $400 million domestic box office or $1 billion globally, with “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” and “Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse” coming closest and delivering solid box office totals. Three films failed to reach $100 million domestically, with “Shazam: Fury of the Gods” barely tipping over $50 million.
Then came Marvel Studios’ “Deadpool & Wolverine.”
Critics weren’t kind to the threequel, but those reviews didn’t matter to audiences. It debuted this week to a record-shattering $438 million global box office, the highest...

Update: Universal/Warner Bros/Amblin’s Twisters positively blasted past forecasts domestically this session. While the international box office result is pretty close to where we saw it coming in, there’s no denying this is much more of a domestic play.

Universal has domestic rights and Warner is handling overseas where $27.1M was wrangled from 76 markets this frame. That’s after early release in 38 markets last session. This weekend saw a 30% drop overall overseas, for a $42.7M offshore cume.
Latin America had great holds at Colombia (+8%), Argentina (+1%), Mexico (-22%), Peru (-23%) and Brazil (-31%). Australia was down just 21%. Japan and and Korea are still to release.

Many of you know Jack Quaid from his prominent role in the globally popular TV show ‘The Boys,’ which remains his most famous role and his first major break in the superhero genre.
Although Quaid has also voiced characters in ‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’ and the titular role in ‘My Adventures with Superman,’ he had aspirations to portray Superman in live-action as well. In a recent interview, Quaid revealed that he submitted an audition tape for the role, but unfortunately, it did not go well.
Quaid revealed that “everybody” auditioned for James Gunn’s first live-action Dcu installment, but, like many others, he did not progress far in the process.
I did, yeah. I think everybody did, if you kind of fit the bill. I didn’t get very far at all. I put myself on tape and it went nowhere and that’s totally fine, like that’s totally cool.

A cool 1960s vibe, an old-fashioned love theme, dramatic music befitting a lunar landing: Daniel Pemberton’s score for “Fly Me to the Moon” needed to accomplish all these and more.
Greg Berlanti’s rom-com with Scarlett Johansson as Kelly Jones, a Madison Avenue marketing genius hired to sell the moon to the American public, and Channing Tatum as Cole, the NASA director in charge of the Apollo 11 launch behind America’s first moon landing, meant Pemberton could incorporate different musical strands “from the fun aspect to the romantic couple element, and then NASA and a kind of Americana nostalgia,” says the English composer whose credits include “The Trial of the Chicago 7” and “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.”
“I was trying to capture this beautiful, melancholic nostalgia for a time that feels very distant now in America,” Pemberton adds. “One of my favorite pieces in the film is when Apollo...

Of course, The Boys‘ role is his most famous one, and in light of the fact that we are following the series here on Fiction Horizon, we have found an interesting interview Quaid recently gave for The Daily Beast’s “The Last Laugh” podcast.
In the interview, several interesting topics were discussed. We have already reported on Quaid’s comments about being called a “nepo baby” because of his famous parents, but he also discussed The Boys, and he reflected on the politics of the current season, which is one...

Jack Quaid is widely recognized for his portrayal of Hugh “Hughie” Campbell in The Boys, as well as for his notable voice roles such as Brad Boimler in Star Trek: Lower Decks and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Clark Kent / Superman in My Adventures with Superman, and Earth-65 Peter Parker / Lizard in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
Despite his established career, Quaid is also the son of renowned actors Dennis Quaid and Meg Ryan. This familial connection has led some fans to label him a “nepo baby,” short for “nepotism baby,” which refers to individuals who achieve success in careers similar to those of their already prominent parents.
Recently, Maya Hawke, daughter of Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman, acknowledged how her parents assisted her in securing her initial roles. Similarly, in a recent discussion, Jack Quaid expressed his acceptance of the “nepo baby” label but emphasized that he believes it has no bearing on his talent.

We're still waiting on the trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (it was first rumoured to be on the way a couple of months ago), but new merchandise packaging first shared on GameFragger.com has today revealed a long-awaited first look at Shadow.
A few shadowy - no pun intended - glimpses have found their way online before now, but this serves as the most detailed shot of the villain-turned-anti-hero yet. Some minor cosmetic changes have been made since his debut in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 but Shadow looks suitably formidable.
Idris Elba's Knuckles was a hit and took centre stage in a Parmount+ spin-off TV series earlier this year. If Shadow strikes a similar chord with fans of the hit Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, we'd imagine he'll get something similar (though a big screen outing might be more likely in his case).

The popularity of ‘The Boys’ as a comic book series has surged, primarily driven by its widely acclaimed TV adaptation. Concurrently, Marvel stands as one of the world’s largest comic book publishers, even though ‘The Boys’ parodies some of its elements.
While their plots and characters differ significantly (beyond some parodic references to Marvel characters), there are individuals who bridge both worlds through their involvement in live-action adaptations of ‘The Boys’ and Marvel’s extensive comic book adaptations.
These are the actors and actresses who have featured in both ‘The Boys’ and Marvel’s live-action and animated adaptations. In this article, discover who they are and the roles they portrayed.

We know that The Boys is one of the most popular comic book series of all time, which is mostly due to the TV series being exceptionally popular; this, of course, increased the popularity of the comic book as well. At the same time, Marvel is one of the two biggest comic book publishers in the world, and The Boys is, in part, satirizing their work as well.
While these two have very little in common in terms of their plots and characters (aside from the fact that some of The Boys characters are parodies of Marvel’s characters), there are several people that connect the live-action adaptation of The Boys, as well as the live-action and animated adaptation of Marvel’s comic books.

2023 has been labeled by many as one of the worst years for superhero fiction in quite sometime. Despite hits on the big screen like Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, and great shows on streaming like Invincible, 2023 largely saw an alarming increase in the use of the term ‘superhero fatigue’ in online spaces.

The other night I was having dinner with a couple of industry veterans, both Oscar voters, who told me they had been talking to a top producer-financier who had seen two big studio movies coming out later in the year and both were fantastic.
The producer very enthusiastically praised Ridley Scott’s Gladiator II, said Paul Mescal was terrific and Denzel Washington extraordinary in it. He also saw the new Robert Zemeckis film Here, which stars and de-ages Tom Hanks and Robin Wright, also reuniting them from the 1994 Zemeckis film Forrest Gump. Both that one and Scott’s 2000 Gladiator took Best Picture and now it appears both veteran directors will be back in the race — big time. Scott still has yet to win an Oscar, having been overlooked four times in the director race.

To close out the week, Warner Bros. and Legendary have dated a pair of upcoming releases: an untitled Denis Villeneuve Event Film and the next installment in the MonsterVerse series, a.k.a. Godzilla x Kong 3.
First up, the untitled Denis Villeneuve Event Film has been dated for December 18, 2026.
While we were previously under the assumption that Villeneuve was developing a drama film based on the nonfiction book Nuclear War: A Scenario as his next film, both The Hollywood Reporter and Deadline now believe that he's shifted gears back to the sandy dunes of Arrakis and that the December date is actually being reserved for Dune: Part Three (rumored title Dune: Messiah), which will be his next project.
However, before they can formally announce the film and its now-booked release date, Villeneuve will have to lock the script, which, as far as we know, is close to finished as he...

Disney/Pixar’s Inside Out 2 keeps on soaring, reaching $799.7M globally through Tuesday. Within that, its international box office crossed the four-century mark at a running cume of $411.9M from 44 overseas markets through Tuesday. In North America, Inside Out 2 rose to $387.8M, moving well up the domestic animated chart.
After 12 days in domestic release, the blockbuster sequel is the No. 10 animated film of all time in North America, having passed Minions: The Rise of Gru, Finding Nemo and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse ($382M. 2023). The next animated title it will overtake domestically is Disney’s own Frozen (2013).

The ongoing struggle to elevate animated features to the same level of best-picture recognition as live-action films will undoubtedly resurface by year’s end. This time, the spotlight will be on Pixar’s highly successful sequel, “Inside Out 2,” a film that could bring joy and success amid a dark cloud hovering around Hollywood studios.
With debut director Kelsey Mann taking over from Pete Docter, the second installment follows Riley (Kensington Tallman) during her teenage years. Along with her core emotions — Joy (Amy Poehler), Sadness (Phyllis Smith), Anger (Lewis Black), Fear, and Disgust — she begins encountering new emotions, notably Anxiety (Maya Hawke).
The first film had a budget of $175 million and made $858 million worldwide. It received two Oscar noms for original screenplay and animated feature, winning the latter. However, during the era when the Academy recognized 5-10 movies for best picture, it didn’t land among the eight that included...

The Annecy Animation Festival, the most important eight days of the year for the global animation industry, wraps up tonight, so we’re looking back at 10 themes that dominated the dialogue around this year’s event.
Annecy is Hollywood’s Favorite Animation Showcase
In interviews held before this year’s festival, several representatives from Hollywood studios, speaking on background, told us that Annecy has now replaced Comic-Con as their most important promotional event of the year for animation.
During a backstage interview with Variety at a “Transformers: One” panel, festival artistic director Marcel Jean explained that building that reputation wasn’t a quick or easy process. “It’s a long-term work to convince the studios that Annecy is a place to be for them,” he said. “I think we are building a very strong relationship with Paramount, and it’s the same with most of the studios now.”

While 2023 was a disappointing year for superhero flicks, as most of them bombed at the box office, there were two outliers, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. In the latter’s case, being a follow-up to arguably the best superhero film of the last decade, Across the Spider-Verse, had some huge shoes to fill, and fortunately, it didn’t disappoint.
But among its incredibly stacked roster of Spider-Man from all around the multiverse, the breakout star was Miguel O’Hara’s Spider-Man 2099, who is arguably a better Kang than Kang himself. Per rumors, the MCU once approached Sony to incorporate the character in the multiversal saga.

Move out of the way, Sadness: “Inside Out 2” just scored the biggest box office previews of 2024.
Disney and Pixar’s latest animated outing grossed $13 million in Thursday previews domestically, plus $22.3 million internationally. The family-friendly sequel is projected to launch between $80 million and $90 million this weekend.
A debut on the higher end would give “Inside Out 2” the biggest opening of the year. Warner Bros. currently holds the top two spots of 2024 with “Dune: Part Two” at $82.5 million and “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” at $80 million.
For reference, “Inside Out 2’s” $13 million in domestic box office previews outpaced last year’s “The Little Mermaid” ($10.3 million), “Minions: The Rise of Gru” ($10.8 million) and “Toy Story 4” ($12 million). It falls a bit short of recent animated superhero sequels like “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” ($17.4 million) and “Incredibles 2” ($18.5 million).
Outside of the U.S. and Canada, “Inside Out 2” did particularly well in Mexico,...

Marvel has had multiple properties in the market that have been making a lot of money for the company. Be it the Spider-Man properties under Sony, the MCU, or the video games that are being served up as console exclusives, Marvel has been dominating the superhero market in every way possible.

However, despite the company essentially firing on all cylinders, there seems to be a marked difference in how these properties are produced. That has to be the case, given that different studios handle the projects handed to them differently, but there is one thing that Chris Miller said Sony Animation is never going to do, that seems to be becoming the industry norm, even being used in the making of films like Logan and Avengers: Infinity War.

“Bad Boys: Ride or Die” gave the box office a desperately needed jolt, but the action-comedy fourquel can’t salvage the summer season by itself.
Although the newest “Bad Boys,” reuniting Will Smith and Martin Lawrence as Miami cops, arrived on the higher end of expectations with $56 million in domestic ticket sales, the year-to-date deficit actually grew more pronounced. Heading into the weekend, ticket sales were 24% behind 2023 and now overall revenues are lagging by 26% according to Comscore.
“Bad Boys 4” isn’t to blame for the decline; analysts believe it’s the lack of enthusiasm for other titles in the marketplace. Four of the other top five releases — Sony’s animated “The Garfield Movie” ($10 million), Paramount’s fantasy comedy “If” ($8 million), the Warner Bros. supernatural thriller and fellow newcomer “The Watchers” ($7.4 million) and Disney and 20th Century’s sequel “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” ($5.4 million) — brought in scraps.
