Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (2024)
Charlton Heston Would Be Pleased
The reign of the mighty Caesar is long over and a young ape by the name of Noa is forced to go on a long treacherous journey to deal with a threat that may affect the future of his kind. The film is directed by Wes Ball and written by Josh Friedman, Rick Jaffa, and Amanda Silver. The directing and writing were quite good in my opinion. The stars of the film are Owen Teague (Noa), Freya Allan (Nova), Kevin Durand (Proximus Caesar), Peter Macon (Raka) William H Macy (Trevathan), Eka Darville (Sylva), Travis Jeffery (Anaya), Lydia Peckham (Soona). This film blew me away it was so good. Amazing special effects, wonderful cinematography I was totally mesmerized by it all. I grew up watching the Planet of the Apes films and oh how they have evolved into something spectacular. I also liked how there were little bits from the previous films going way back, nicely done. So happy that we will get to continue with this great franchise of films. Bravo to the cast & crew you did a fine job, I highly recommend this film.
Civil War (2024)
Eerily Hits Close To Home
This film takes us on a long frightening journey with four Journalists from New York to Washington DC during a time of Civil War in the not so United States, sound familiar? The film stars a group of very talented actors. Kirsten Dunst (Lee), Wagner Moura (Joel), Cailee Spaeny (Jessie), Stephen McKinley Henderson (Sammy), Nick Offerman (The President), Jefferson White (Dave) not me LOL. This film is well written and directed by Alex Garland. This is such a good film. I would say that I really liked it but the story is unsettling cause it has inklings of what happened in this country that January day. The battle scenes were very realistic and it felt like you were right there with the actors at times I hunched down in my chair in order to be less of a target. Definitely should be on your must see list of films.
The Girl in the Pool (2024)
Not quite a Lifetime Movie
A faux, joyous surprise Birthday Party reveals adultery and a dead mistress as an unexpected gift is the story of this Lifetime Movie Like film. The film stars Freddie Prinze Jr (Thomas), Monica Potter (Kristen), Gabrielle Haugh (Hannah), Tyler Lawrence Gray (Alex), Brielle Barbusca (Rose), Kevin Pollack (William). With a great cast like that you expect a really good film, but it goes to show you great actors can't produce with a poor script, and poor direction which is such a shame. Just when a scene in the film wasn't too bad, a bad scene that made you question and think to yourself, what were they thinking?? It's so so at best.
A Quiet Place: Day One (2024)
The Scares aren't So Quiet
Where it all began, the invasion of those super hearing aliens land in the Big Apple wreacking havoc on mankind. A young woman, Samira (Lupita Nyong'o and her cat, Frodo find themselves trapped trying to escape from the aliens with the help of Eric (Joseph Quinn). Directed and co-written by Michael Sarnoski. Others writers were John Krasinski and Bryan Woods. Other cast members include Alex Wolff (Reuben), Djimon Hounsou (Henri) Eliane Umuhire (Zena). Going into this film I was concerned as often the longer a film series goes the quality drops. I am happy to report not in this case at all. I actually feel it's even better than the 2nd film in this series A Quiet Place 2. It contains plenty of tense moments and jump out of your seat scares. The acting is quite good as you would expect and the story is well written. You will definitely want to check this one out and bring some extra money for spilled popcorn.
IF (2024)
Never Too Old
This film is the story of Bea (Cailey Fleming) who is dealing with a stressful situation when she begins to see all of these IFs aka Imaginary Friends and their Manager Cal (Ryan Reynolds) at Bea's Grandmother's (Fiona Shaw) home where Bea is staying while her Dad (John Krasinski) has a medical procedure. In my opinion, the film was a little slow at first but picked up momentum as we are introduced to this all-star cast of IFs. Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Blossom) Steve Carell (Blue) Louis Gossett Jr. (Lewis). I enjoyed this film that was also written, and directed by Krasinski. I found it touching, and I even began to tear up during some scenes which is a good sign for a good film. I would recommend it especially for anyone dealing with stressful situations.
Monkey Man (2024)
Well Done Dev Patel
Kid (Dev Patel) struggling financially and consumed with vengeance on the mind due to a horrific tragedy that happened to him earlier in life. Kid decides it's time to act upon the rage inside. This film is co-wrote, and directed by Patel as well in which he does a really nice job. But where he really shines is his acting as an amazing action hero. The stunt team definitely earned their check and then some. The fight scenes were some of the best I have ever seen. The film is not for the squeamish as it is a blood bath at times. Great cast Sharlto Copley (Tiger) Pitobash (Alphonso) Sikandar Kher (Rana) Sobhita Dhulipala (Sita) Makrand Deshpande (Baba Shakti) Ashwini Kalsekar (Queenie) Vipin Sharma (Alpha) Adithi Kalkunte (Neela). It's a good action film and the fights are great.
Albert Brooks: Defending My Life (2023)
Matteo's Party of Three
2023 Documentary about the innovative, genius Comedian, filmmaker, actor this is Albert Brooks. The Director Rob Reiner takes us through Brooks's career via appearances on tv shows and films. As well as a sit down interview with Brooks and Reiner at Matteo's Restaurant in LA. Along with the many stars that are fans of Albert's. Such as Sharon Stone, Judd Apatow, James L Brooks, Larry David, Jonah Hill, Chris Rock, David Letterman, Nikki Glaser, Anthony Jeselnik, Conan O'brien, Sarah Silverman. After watching this Documentary you will need to see some of his great films like Mother (1996), The Muse (1999), Lost in America (1985) etc. Then you will want to go to Youtube and watch him on the Tonight Show and Letterman. I remember the first time I ever heard of Albert Brooks was his short films on SNL back in the 1970s which were so creative. Thank you Rob Reiner for showing us the career of your good friend Albert Brooks.
Fresh Kills (2023)
Jennifer Esposito knocked it out of the park
This film is about a family that moves to Staten Island from Brooklyn for a better life. Joe Larusso (Domenick Lombardozzi) a tracksuit wearing man that isn't forthcoming about his whereabouts at times. His loving, loyal wife Francine (Jennifer Esposito). Connie, (Odessa A'zion) the fiery daughter. Rose, the shy, daughter (Emily Bader). This film comes from the female perspective of an organized crime family. How some members of the family accept their roles as being loyal members of the family being married, having kids. Rose however has bigger dreams. In my opinion, one of the best, and unique, mafia films. Jennifer Esposito, wrote, directed, and co-produced this passion project. The performances by this cast was quite good, especially that of Emily Bader that deserves recognition by the Academy. The film shook me to the core, and during the whole time I was on the edge of my seat waiting for something or someone to explode. Please check this Indie film out and give it the praise it deserves.
The Fall Guy (2024)
A nice homage to the Stunt Men and Women
Colt Seavers (Ryan Gosling) is a stuntman that puts his life on the line to make the Stars of a film look good and stay out of harms way. When something happens and Colt needs to bring his Movie Magic skills to use in the real world. David Leitch does an amazing job directing this light hearted homage to the under appreciated men and women that risk life and limb to entertain us. Such a fine supporting cast consisting of the talented, charming Emily Blunt (Jody Moreno), Hannah Waddingham (Gail Meyer), Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Tom Ryder), Teresa Palmer (Iggy Star), Stephanie Hsu (Alma Milan), and Winston Duke (Dan Tucker). The film is funny, plenty of action as you would expect. Ryan Gosling is such a good comedic actor when he wants to be with that dry sense of humor and how he delivers his lines, well done Ryan! This film is such a great way to spend an evening taking in.
Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F (2024)
Welcome Back Axel F
Axel Foley (Eddie Murphy) gets word that his daughter ,Jane (Taylor Paige) might be in trouble and back to California he goes like any Father would. Once there he enlists the help of his friends to resolve this situation. This film does a great job of taking us back to where we first fell in love with Mr Foley back in the 80s. It was so nice to see these actors bring back their characters from the past to present time and they never missed a beat, especially Murphy. The supporting cast consisting of Judge Reinhold (Det. Billy Rosewood), John Ashton (Chief John Taggart), Kevin Bacon (Captain Grant), Paul Reiser (Deputy Chief Jeffrey Friedman), and Bronson Pinchot (Serge). The film was well written with plenty of laughs. Mark Molloy did great directing this all star group. I found this film nostalgic and entertaining and had me doing the Neutron Dance long after the credits rolled. Thank you Mr Murphy!
Sasquatch Sunset (2024)
This Species is Full of Feces
Off we go to the Pacific Northwest where we follow along of hairy cryptids known as Sasquatches. We travel with an Alpha Male (Nathan Zellner), Female (Riley Keough), Male (Jesse Eisenberg) and Child Christophe Zajac-Denek) as they go back their day to day activities trying to survive and deal with isolation and the encroachment of Man. I knew going into this film I wasn't going to see the next Citizen Kane or Godfather. What I did watch was a Jack Links commercial written by Seth MacFarlane with a little Johnny Knoxville thrown in. It did have some funny scenes and an occasional heartwarming scene or two. But this was overshadowed by such lewdness and an infatuation with bodily functions. They really dropped the ball in my opinion they should have made like a Mockumentary and played into the things that so called Bigfoot hunters claim Squatches do. The Zellners should have watched the Travel Channel for a day or two. Overall I was disappointed in this film.
Reverse the Curse (2023)
You Made Me Tear Up Duchovny
This film is about three people brought together by one thing, impending death. Marty (David Duchovny) has a fatal illness. Marty's only child, Ted (Logan Marshall-Green) a Peanut slinger. Mariana (Stephanie Beatriz) is Marty's 'Death Nurse' someone who helps make a persons last days a little better. Ted decides to also make Marty's brief future a little better as well. I really enjoyed this film that Duchovny wrote and directed as well. It will make you laugh, feel good, and at times shed a tear or two. The supporting cast was strong as well with Pamela Adlon (Blauner), Jason Beghe (Tango Sam), Evan Handler (Benny), Santo Fazio (Shticker) and Daphne Rubin-Vega (Eva). This film will definitely make you decide to call your Dad especially if you haven't done so in a while.
The Watchers (2024)
Frightening 'Reality' Show?
This is the story of a young, troubled woman that ends up stranded in the middle of a deep, dark, forest in Ireland along with three other unfortunate people. In order to survive they are forced to participate in a reality show for a terrifying, unseen audience. The film is written and well directed by first time director Ishana Night Shyamalan. Her Father, M Night Shyamalan produced the film. The stars of this Horror film are Dakota Fanning (Mina/Lucy) Olwen Fouere (Madeline) Georgina Campbell (Ciara) and Oliver Finnegan (Daniel). The cast as solid as they come, especially Fanning. Definitely some frightening scenes, however I wish their were a lot more to qualify this as a Horror film. I did enjoy the twists and turns in the film in true Shyamalan fashion, nicely done! Overall I found it quite entertaining and look forward to see more of Ishana's work.
The Last Stop in Yuma County (2023)
The Good things about this film is as sparse as Gas Stations in Arizona
This film takes place in the 1970s primarily at a Gas Station/Diner/Motel Combo which growing up was pretty common when going on vacation. This one is located in the desert region on Yuma County Arizona. Weary Travelers low on fuel arrive gradually only to discover that the Gas Station was out of fuel til the Truck arrives and so these people are forced to wait at the Diner til they can refuel. In this eventual mix of humanity includes two unsavoury characters. The film stars Jocelin Donahue (Charlotte the Waitress), Jim Cummings (The Knife Salesman) Richard Brake (Unsavory Character #1), Nicholas Logan (Unsavoury Character #2), Faizon Love (Vernon) and Gene Jones (Robert), Robin Bartlett (Earline). My Thoughts: I thought the story was unique and interesting. The Director/Writer Francis Galluppi did a so so job. At times some of the scenes in the film were almost corny. Most of the actors have been in B Horror films in their career which made them seem like they were fresh off a local community Theatre Group with the exception of Jocelin Donahue who I thought truly shined and deserves better. Overall I found it mediocre at best.
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024)
Kong, Godzilla, Mothra, The Three Amigos??
Godzilla is chillin on the surface of Earth at the ready whenever a monster appears up to no good. Meanwhile Kong needs a little TLC. Kong's handlers at Monarch decide to escort him back to Hollow Earth a threat arrives and the titans Kong, Godzilla, and Mothra step up to save the world again. This entertaining film stars Kaylee Hottle (Jia), Rebecca Hall (Dr Ilene Andrews), Dan Stevens (Trapper, not John, just Trapper), Brian Tyree Henry (Bernie Hayes. The film is full of epic battles, and does a great job of taking you to a beautiful and mysterious world. These monster movies have a way to pull you in and make you cheer that good will triumph over evil. These films have come along way as far as special effects so realistic, much improved over the films from the 1960s that used mini sets and people in costumes I used to watch on the Acri Creature Feature on Friday nights. The cast is quite good as is the crew that put this film together, can't wait til the next one!
Trigger Warning (2024)
Jessica Alba, kicking a** and taking names.
This 2024 film is a story of Parker (Jessica Alba) a special forces officer that returns home upon the death of her Dad (Alejandro De Hoyos) Once home Parker questions the cause of death which eventually leads to her needing the use of her specialized military training. I enjoyed this action thriller directed by Mouly Surya in her English-Language film debut, nicely done Mouly. The cast includes Anthony Michael Hall (Senator Swann) Mark Webber (Jesse), Tone Bell (Spider), Jake Weary (Elvis, not the King of Rock n Roll), and Gabriel Basso (Mike) to name just a few of this talented group. Jessica is not only a Bad*** businesswoman in real life, but channels her inner (Dark Angel) in this film. Enjoy action thriller fans, enjoy.
Hit Man (2023)
Where have you been hiding Glen Powell?
Gary( Glen Powell) is a full time Professor and a Part Time Hit Man?? When he meets a perspective Client, Madison (Adria Arjona) things get 'complicated'. I thoroughly enjoyed this film. So well written, Acted, directed, and produced. Until recently I didn't know much about Powell's work now I am a big fan he was terrific! But the entire cast was as well. Cast included, Retta (Claudette), Austin Amelio (Jasper) Sanjay Rao (Phil) Molly Bernard (Alicia), Evan Holtzman (Ray) and many others. The film is is funny and with plenty of action. The chemistry between Powell.and Arjona quite possibly be the reason ACs are working overtime recently. Definitely worth checking this film out.
Brats (2024)
Thank You Andrew McCarthy
The 2024 Documentary well written and directed by one member of the 'Brat Pack' Andrew McCarthy that focuses on the young film stars from 1980's that were coined The Brat Pack. McCarthy interviews Rob Lowe, Ally Sheedy, Emilio Estevez, Demi Moore. Plus Brat Pack + stars Jon Cryer, Lea Thompson, and Timothy Hutton. He also talked to some of people involved in the making of those 80s movies we know and love. Notably missing with no explanation is Anthony Michael Hall??? Molly Ringwald chose not to participate, the same for Judd Nelson. I really found this Documentary a fun nostalgic look back to those 80s and it reminded me how much I miss film director John Hughes. Please check this film out and then go back and watch some of these great 80s films, you will be glad you did. 🙂
