Jeanne du Barry (2023)
Transports you to the 18th century.
The best thing this movie has to offer is the depiction of french culture, more social wise than political.
On top of that the costumes are really well done, brilliantly i might add. Locations are varied but most of the movie is spent on the interiors of the Versalles castle, there are a few outdoors scenes but scarcely.
The acting is phenomenal, is what sells you all the little 'quirks' and cultural habits the high society had at the time, how they see as a privilege such mundane things as watching your father waking up.
They did well - if a character is happy, disgusted or mad you just need to take a look at their faces to see what they're thinking, can't complain about any performance.
One of the things i didn't like overall was the feeling of something missing, specially at the end; the movie explains perfectly how Jeanne caught the king's attention, how she made him happy, how she broke certain standards in their culture such as the dressing but it never explains (with pictures) her demise, instead it was narrated in a brief moment.
Despicable Me 4 (2024)
Fun movie
Saw this movie at 10pm lol
I liked it, i had some prejudices the first moment i saw the trailer; that it won't be fun, that the characters don't age and that the story will be bad.
But no, the story is decent or at least entertaining, if you go alone or with kids i think the premise of the film is likable at the very least
Animation wise it's espectacular, characters have a lot of emotions, they're really expresive and all scenarios have good ambience and it's very detailed, same with the sound design, it is good and has some old soundtracks that are still catchy today.
The plot is 'ok', i think it's interesting that Gru is in serious trouble this time, the start of the film makes it looks like he was in real danger. I wish it went hard on that rail but that plot is muddled in a lot of scenes for each family member, and the minions.
Like... the main thing; the fight between gru and the big bad guy from this film is what i felt it wasn't properly developed, the other scenes with the family aren't bad but they don't feel connected to the overarching plot.
Yes there are a lot of minions scenes but 1) most of them are funny and 2) they're not the main focus, they also don't last long
This is a good movie, worth the ticket for the entire family but it could've been more interesting.
MaXXXine (2024)
Took it to the Maxxx
Well i was surprised to know that this was part of a trilogy, i didn't knew that before watching the film, but even without knowing that this is a solid movie from start to finish.
Story is intriguing from the start, someone is stalking Maxine, some people are not what they say they're, how will everything end? Can't say much about it but to me every answer i had throughout the watch was answered, the overarching plot is good too.
Not a lot of violence, but when it's displayed they don't hold any punches, it's brutal.
Everyone gave a good performance, the movie has a gritty look, not sure how to put it in words, it looks like one of those old vhs movies, in a good way.
You should see it, it's worth the ticket and if you didn't know that this is the last part of a trilogy of movies well... you should watch the other ones, i'll sure do it.
Bad Boys: Ride or Die (2024)
Surprises to the very end
Saw this movie in theaters in it's original language, i'm not a fan of the franchise and i barely remember the first one but this one holds up pretty good.
There are moments where you feel like you've seen a joke before but they pull out the rug under you with an unexpected thing and it always turns out good.
The action scenes are somewhat serious with a mix of comedy and i liked every one of the set pieces, even if you're not a fan of comedy films this one should at least get a good chuckle out of you.
Audio is good, performances are great and the chemistry between will smith and martin lawrence is there, you won't get bored of them.
The things i didn't like; it takes a bit to get interesting - the mistery behind the plot isn't too intriguing, and the antagonist didn't get much of a spotlight.
Anyways it's worth the ticket and it's an enjoyable movie.
Black Clover (2017)
It grows on you
Started watching this anime on netflix through the weekend with my family, they don't know much about anime shows as i do and i thought they would get bored of it, me included.
I can say that it starts bland and boring and the main character yells a lot, even to the point my family was mocking Asta lol.
But as episodes go by we got hooked because the backstories of these characters are really well done and there's a scense of an overarching scheme behind the scenes that's being unvelled on each arc.
The animation is bland that's true, but it's solid/decent where it matters (fights) except for the first ones.
Just watched the first season (51) eps and we like the show so far, it's worth a watch but if you don't like to wait until it 'gets good' you might skip it.
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (2024)
Enjoyable but not 100% convinced
The story is about the life of Furiosa, how she became the badass we saw in Fury Road, how she was before, but it doesn't go too deep into it imo
This was promoted as a movie were we would see how Furiosa attempted to escape her captors, how many times she tried but didn't succeed; this isn't quite true.
She does attempt to escape but only a few times - When she was a kid at the start of the movie, and as an adult after failing to hijack a trailer, from there she finds love and doesn't attempt anything.
Got side-tracked a bit, how's the movie? It's entertaining from start to finish, even for its long runtime you'll find yourself interested in what's the next scheme at play, action packed ensured.
The actors? They give all very good performances, Dementius stands out from all of them - when he appears on screen, Furiosa is the ony i'm not too convinced.
Taylor is not a bad actress, she does her job very well but she doesn't look like a badass - we see her do incredible stunts and feats but i didn't buy her as Furiosa, she doesn't have that "badass" look in her imo.
And here comes the big spoiler; this movies shows you how she got her arm removed; i didn't buy this at all. Are you expecting me to believe that she cut her arm while she was hanging from a crane surrounded by motorcicles cycling in around her for hours and she just escapes, grabs a bike and nobody sees her?
All in all even with it's flaws i loved this movie from start to finish; visually amazing although green screen could be spotted a few times, audio is good in some scenes, underused in others and the message it's up to you; vengeance, power hungry and what it does to people
Worth the ticket.
Civil War (2024)
Speechless, brutal movie
This movie made me feel sad and scared about almost everyone involved; main characters, extras, etc.
The plot? In a nutshell it's about a group of journalist that travel to the white house for an interview with the president of a divided nation, but it's very ambiguous about what caused these events.
Visually? Gorgeous when you get to see nature, highways and buildings, you get to see different places, some greatly affected by war and others not too much.
And it's a grounded movie, a lot of action movies make you feel like all the death and pain the characters go through it's not that important, but this movie makes it feel more 'grounded' and real, and that's scarier, stressful and sad to witness.
The sound? It's phenomenal, you have to experience it yourself in imax or a good sound system, i'm not a scaredy cat but even a single gunshot sometimes made me jump in the seat as if it was a jumpscare in a horror movie.
I liked this movie but it also made me feel uneasy, there's a lot of deaths and none of them are pretty, heroic or anything positive there's a lot of violence and it made me feel like it was a living hell.
And you can sense how all this violence affects the characters, they're not made of stone.
I don't recommend this for people that are sensitive to these things, i thought i was 'strong' but i left the theater speechless.
Gekijôban Spy x Family Code: White (2023)
A decent filler movie
Saw the movie in Japanese with Spanish subtitles, if you're a fan or a newcomer to the franchise the movie does a good job of filling the dynamic of the show in the first minutes, it's great.
How's the pacing? Well all the action happens at the end, it's quite good but it doesn't make you feel like they're really in danger or the stakes are too high, movie plays it safe.
From start to middle you get some mundane things; introductions, buying groceries, normal family stuff.
Plotwise is where things fall apart; Anya is going to participate in a cooking contest and her spy dad hints that she should make a "MereMere" dessert, which is one of the judge's favorite desserts.
Winning this contest could bring her dad closer to infiltrate a reunion of influential people in the country, so they travel to the specific city where that dessert is made to learn how to cook it but Anya eats a chocolate containing a chip that other spies where trying to get and they kidnap her and try to make her poop to collect their data.
I say it's filler because at the end, none of this mattered at all - the parents rescue Anya and the contest is cancelled because the kitchen broke, so no cake is made, no stella is won and her dad is not closer to complete his mission.
Visually the movie is gorgeous and at certain scenes the animation style changes completely, one for a gag and the other for a fight and both look awesome
If you're a fan of the franchise you might love it, and it's awesome for newcomers and the entire family (well maybe not kids) but for me... it's meh.
Tyson's Run (2022)
Decent family movie
I watched this movie in Spanish and the voice actors did a decent job at potraying the actors, but for Tyson sometimes he sounded robotic and with a few microphone 'pops', i don't think this how the original movie sounded.
Overall i was hooked from start to finish and invested in Tyson's journey.
Story:
It's decent and is focused on a young teenager; Tyson which has autism and decides that would like to go to a normal school instead of being home schooled by his mother, there he meets people who are understanding of his condition; students and teachers.
Most importantly he makes a new friend who sparks in Tyson a passion for marathon running.
Acting:
The acting is decent, ok... but there are times where they don't act very good and the person i noticed of doing this the more was Tyson's father; he's too serious and i never saw him smile in situations where he should've, everyone else was fine in my opinion.
Script:
Good but oftentimes it lead to characters overreacting, you can see that in Tyson's mother where she often seems unreasonable with her husband over very important points.
Sound / Visuals:
The visuals are cristal clear, specially in the school but there are no outstanding shots, soundwise nothing remarkable either since not a lot is going on; either characters talk or there is some kind of montage.
Migration (2023)
Suprisingly decent
I went with low expectations about this film because the trailers looked like the movie wasn't good, but after watching it i can say it's really worth the ticket.
Visually there's nothing to complain about here the ducks and all kinds of birds that appear here look nice and are really expresive.
Soundwise nothing outstanding, decent, you can hear every character clearly because all was mixed well. The ambient for all scenarios is done pretty well too (Swamps, cities, forrest)
Storywise This is what i liked the most because it's not that dumb for an illumination movie, it has drama and funny moments throughout the entire run, but nothing too deep, just enough to be entertaining.
I would say if you go alone or with your family you'll have a good time.
Trolls Band Together (2023)
Decent but should be better
I'll be fair; the music and visuals are decent but the actual plot of the movie is just painful.
Visually:
Stunning, all the trolls look 'good' and move fluidly, the backgrounds are full of colors and surprisingly very well detailed (Troll town, a beach, some concert scenarios and a big city in the night)
Sound:
Very good too, the main attraction are the musicals which i thing were decent, mixing 90's songs with some of their own originals for the movie. (No back street boys in a boy band movie??! What a crime), can't complain about the voice actors they were all decent.
Writing:
For me this is the worst part of this movie. The plot is about some trolls reuniting after years to save another troll that was kidnapped by a famous duo that is stealing the troll's talent for their own use.
But how they plan to save him, how they reunite after years it's made in the dumbest way possible - not sure how they got 2 writers and none of them came up with a decent story to tie all together.
