A Quiet Place: Day One (2024)
My favourite in the series.
I am so impressed with a Quiet Place Day One, it is definitely my favourite installment in this series. It has a subtle understatement that the others don't have. I think it is also interesting to have it from other's perspectives, especially someone who's days are already numbered. Lupita Nyong'o as Samira was fantastic, and with her sidekick Frodo, you immediately form an attachment to them. Joseph Quinn was also great as Eric. It has been a long time since I have watched a horror film that I wanted people to survive. I highly recommend this one, I hope we get to see more of Eric and Frodo in a cross over of characters.
Longlegs (2024)
I will give it an 8 for Maika Monroe's performance.
I had heard a lot of hype about Long Legs. Would it be good though? And how could it possibly be so with Nic Cage in it? Don't get me wrong I like Cage, however, he is no stellar actor. Regardless, I went in hoping for the best and enjoyed the film. Visually it is spectacular, the shots are perfect and so is the overall tone of the film. Yet when we strip everything back to basics, Maika Monroe 'made' this film. Her acting was marvelous, her nervous awkwardness was captivating. She reeked emotionally troubled by past trauma. Nic Cage was good, but not as good as I was hoping he would be. Would I watch it again? Yes in a heartbeat. I recommend this film, but only if you can handle slow burns.
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024)
Disappointed
I don't know what was going on with this installment of Godzilla and Kong, but it failed to hit the mark for me. I don't think that the CGI was anywhere as realistic as it was in previous Kong and Godzilla movies, and the introduction of the baby ape was just so blah and poorly done as well. I found this movie overall very irritating. I saw in another review about removing humans from it. I have to totally agree with that. Let's go back to it being more about the monsters rather than the humans, and stop introducing crap things like baby apes. It's not appealing. We want Kong and Godzilla action with the other monsters.
The Exorcism (2024)
One of the better Exorcism movies
Yes, everyone wishes they had made The Exorcist. I have seen some absolute rubbish exorcism films in my time, and let's face it there has been a lot. No one has been able to capture the creepiness of the original Exorcist film. When this one was announced, I was a bit like blah. I thought maybe it was too soon for Russell straight off The Pope's Exorcist movie. I had also read some less than kind reviews. But the bad reviews are wrong. I really enjoyed this film. Crowe was genuinely creepy in his role as the has-been actor, with an addiction problem and a shrouded traumatic childhood. The whole cast was good. I'm not sure why people are hating on it. It is definitely a film I would watch again. Don't listen to the bad reviews and don't go into it thinking it will be as good as The Exorcist. It is definitely better than The Exorcist reboot though. Far superior in fact.
Moonfall (2022)
Fun to watch if you just take it as Mockbuster
I had been putting off watching Moonfall, I finally took the plunge and I am glad that I did. Was it a load of far out, craziness? Yes. Was it enjoyable? Yes. Come on people don't take things so seriously. For a disaster film this movie hit all the marks, it has conspiracy theories, the pending end of the world, disaster shots, and characters you could somewhat invest yourself in. It was a fun ride. Was it the best disaster film of this kind? No, but I wasn't bored in the slightest watching it. This film was not made to win awards for drama or acting, it was just a disaster film. If you just go along for the crazy ride you are bound to enjoy yourself.
Le Vourdalak (2023)
I am obsessed
Le Vourdalak is an absolute masterpiece of a film. I was enchanted from the very first moment until the end. It kept my attention every step of the way. So mesmerizing. The acting was superb, the storyline was magnificent. Everything about this film is visually beautiful. If you love vampire films that are a little quirky, and if you love historical/period pieces then you will fall head over heels in love with this film. It is very rare that a film manages to hold my full attention without me glancing at my phone. I highly recommend The Vourdalak. It is one I know I will be watching again and again. Perfection.
Firebrand (2023)
It Gets Better..
I wasn't sure what to make of the opening of Firebrand. I was not a fan of the narration at the beginning. I understand the need for exposition, however, I found it rather weak (perhaps it was just the actress's voice) thankfully the film developed into a wonderous tale (dramatised of course) of King Henry VIII and his last wife Catherine Parr. I would have liked the story to start at the beginning of their courtship, however, I can't fault how well this story was portrayed. The tension in court, how it must have felt to be at his mercy, and all the backstabbing and plots in the background. The cast was fantastic. Jude Law as Henry was magnificent. If you love historical films, then check it out.
Infinite Storm (2022)
Satisfying Viewing
Based on the true story of Pam Bales (Naomi Watts) and her 2010 expedition to the top of Mount Washington, Infinite Storm is the story of a grieving mother and rescue mountain climber who comes across a man in dire need of rescue while on one of her climbs.
Overall this was a slow but steady film to watch. I found it kept my attention and Naomi Watts was good in her role. It could be because it lacked 'action' that people rated it lower. But this film is based on a true story; not everything is about explosions or unrealistic scenes. Watching her determination to overcome things and continue to get out there after what she had been through, truly holds a lesson for all of us. I enjoyed this movie and would watch it again.
A Family Affair (2024)
Much better than I was expecting.
I was pleasantly surprised by A Family Affair. Joey King was great as the spoilt and annoying Zara Ford who has a complete meltdown when she finds her mum Brooke (Nicole Kidman) in an entanglement with her boss and famous actor Chris (Zac Efron). Toss in Kathy Bates as Brooke's mother-in-law and the whole cast was pretty on point. Yes, when it comes down to it, it is a simple rom-com. But it definitely delivers and was easy to watch and managed to keep my attention. Nicole and Zac were magnetic with one another and you could buy them as a couple. I don't understand people getting worked up about the age difference, if it were George Clooney and a younger actress, people wouldn't bat an eyelid. Nicole looks bloody incredible. I recommend this film if you love an easy to watch rom-com.
The Watchers (2024)
Refreshing Folklore Horror
I am certainly glad that I did not read the reviews of this film and watched it myself. It would have to be one of the best horror films I have watched for 2024 so far, and I guess, there hasn't been a lot of good ones in my opinion. Nevertheless, The Watchers is a steady-paced, intriguing film with an Irish/Celtic folklore/mythology crossover that had me on the edge of my seat throughout the film. Dakota Fanning and the rest of the cast were superb in their roles. I loved the creepiness and atmosphere. It reminded me slighting of the television series From. When you start getting into the explanation of the folklore of the fairies, you can really see a kind of vampire, alien grey cross-over style to them. If you love creepy videos about mimics and changelings, then this movie is worth checking out. Refreshing horror without the need for gore. Loved it.
Summer Camp (2024)
The best bits were the outtakes in the credits.
I wanted to love this movie. With a cast like Diane Keaton, Eugene Levy, Kathy Bates and Alfre Woodard you would expect this film to be damn near perfect or at least funny. But I am not going to blame the cast for this epic failure. It comes down to the writing. What is going on with writing scripts for actors of this generation of late, take for example the latest Book Club, which was another failure. Writers need to get their act together and start delivering decent scripts that do justice for these amazing actors. This really is not good enough. Like I said in the title, the best bits were the bloopers during the end credits. Such a disappointment.
The Strangers: Chapter 1 (2024)
Don't Bother
This is one of those horror reboots where you find yourself cheering on the killers rather than hoping for the rescue of the victims. Madelaine Petsch as Maya is the most annoying character would could imagine, I am hoping that this is how she is meant to be. Then don't get me started on how stupid she is, from placing her wrist over her mouth instead of her hand when the nail is removed, or not being able to sense someone is watching her through a glass shower screen. Just absolutely ridiculous. This movie does not deliver the same eeriness as the original. I was left so disappointed by this, I hope that the second in the trilogy might repair the damage done with the first chapter but knowing Madelaine Petsch is returning does not give me much hope in it.
IF (2024)
Huh?
I am really not sure what to make of the movie IF. I don't want to be one of 'those' types. But let's lay things out in the open here, are we condoning a young tween running around the city with a strange man? Because let's face it, that is what is actually happening until the point we know who the character is. So what message is this sending to our children that we take to see this film? We try to drum into them about stranger danger and this film just pushes it to the wayside. And don't get me started on this Grandmother who obviously has no idea what her granddaughter is doing any time of the day or night. Absolutely bizarre film.
Under the Bridge (2024)
Shows how Evil Girls Can be
Being a fan of Riley Keough I was keen to watch this series, also knowing that it was based on true events. After watching the first few episodes I decided to explore the case myself, as I know series tend to blur the lines for viewing purposes. It was definitely interesting to learn more about the case of Reena and what happened to this poor young lady at the hands of what I can only describe as an evil soulless creature. It shows you how pack mentality, the need to fit in and peer pressure can culminate into something so devastating and needless. This show is well worth watching and something that should be watched by teens as well.
Servant (2019)
Absolute Perfection
From the very first episode, I was addicted to Servant. There is nothing to fault at all in this series. I am dumbfounded to read reviews saying that season 2 was bad, or that the series felt unfinished. Season 2 was fantastic, and the series finishes perfectly, there is nothing more left to be said, and no questions to be answered. Nell Tiger Free as Leanne Grayson was magical, her ability to come across as this sweet, almost naive creature and switch on a dime to this sinister, self-obsessed femme fatale was amazing. I can't fault the cast at all in this series, everyone was perfect in their roles. Each episode was the perfect length and had you wanting to watch more and more. The storyline was easy to follow, even if you were questioning what Leanne was and what was truly going on, it still all made sense. Servant will go down as one of my favourite series of all time. I can't recommend this enough.
Brats (2024)
Andrew McCarthy is the definition of BRAT in Brats.
What an absolute disappointment Brats is. I had been looking forward to this documentary since it was announced. I felt that a documentary was long overdue and I was expecting so much from it and was left feeling dumbfounded and bitter. It is really hard for me to write this review and criticize Andrew McCarthy, as he was always my favourite 80's Brat pack movie actor. Yet after watching this documentary I was left feeling he is a whiny, ungrateful, bitter man. The looks on the faces of Emilio and Ally really said it all. I think none of them could really understand why McCarthy was so bitter. Having been around during this time, I was well aware of the 'Brat' packs behaviour, their partying, drug taking etc. They really didn't need an article to secure their position in that title. I understand that McCarthy saw greater things for his career and he felt that the article damaged what could have been. But the simple fact is that it didn't really damage anyone else's career, and I feel perhaps it was too easy for McCarthy to use it as an excuse rather than to actually get out there. At first I was disappointed that Molly and Judd declined to be involved, but after watching it, I can't blame them. Shame on you McCarthy. You had a good career, stop being so bitter and be happy with what you have.
Tarot (2024)
They aren't getting their Air BnB Deposit back and I'm not getting that time back...
I could tell by the trailer what kind of film this would be, but ever the glutton for punishment I went ahead and watched it anyway. What a yawn-worthy, lack of anything remarkable, waste of money and time that was. There was nothing original, or redeeming about it. There weren't even any decent kills, everything was off-camera and you were meant to be satisfied with a weak blood splatter. The acting was 'ok'. Tick for the diversity friend circle quota. (sarcasm) The 'monsters' reminded me of the 'crooked man' from The Conjuring 2' lame, nothing scary about them. Honestly, I have seen Goosebumps episodes scarier.
Insomnia (2024)
Creepy and Addictive
Insomnia had me hooked from the first episode. I love UK shows and this mystery with a twist had me craving more with each passing minute. As a writer I think I have pretty much worked out where it is going, and had done so by the end of the first episode, but I might be completely wrong. Vicky McClure as Emma Averill is brilliant! My only criticism would be that she doesn't 'really' try to fall asleep before getting out of bed. I have had bouts of insomnia for weeks that have had me in the ER, so I get it. This show is dark, creepy, and brilliant. You can feel that there is something just not right under the surface and you have to figure out what exactly is going on, but it's not as simple as Emma going mad. Definitely give it a shot you will not be disappointed.
The Age of Adaline (2015)
I am late to the party (as usual)
9 years late to the party I finally sat down to watch The Age of Adaline, why I had left it that long I am not 100% sure. Maybe from the trailer I did not think it would be my cup of tea, however, after seeing the trailer again recently, I thought what the hell, and sat down to watch it. I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed this film. Blake Lively was wonderful as Adaline. Yes, it was a bit sugary sweet, but it also made you think a lot. My only peeve about the film was the narration. I know that it was needed to deliver the storyline as it was not one that could be told without it, however I just found it a bit annoying at time. Regardless, I highly recommend this film.
Abigail (2024)
So Much Fun!
I wasn't sure what to expect with Abigail, but it definitely exceeded my expectations in every way possible. This fun vampire flick would have fit in the 80's catalogue of crazy vampire films that came out. It certainly had the same feel and the same laughs. Alisha Weir was amazing as Abigail, how she was able to pull off the sweet innocent child routine, then incapsulate a grown woman/vampire within a child's body. Brilliant. Abigail is a film I will definitely be rewatching and one that I will be adding to my physical media collection. If you love vampires, you love a laugh and enjoy blood splatter then please check this gem out.
The 1% Club (2022)
Love Lee
I had heard about the 1% Club but wasn't too sure what it was about, but when I heard that Lee Mack was the host, I knew that I had to check it out and I was pleasantly surprised. I love that the questions are not general knowledge-based, it is more like an IQ test, it's fun and quirky and had me playing along since the first episode. Some of the questions really make you think and you think how good you are, but I am sure once you are on set it takes it all into a whole new ball game. I love Lee's interaction with the audience members, he is a fantastic host. This show has definitely got me hooked.
Something in the Water (2024)
Global warming, tick, diversity, tick..
There have been very few and far between good shark films. Let's face it, everyone wishes they made Jaws. But here I was sitting down to watch another, hoping at least someone would get eaten this time, unlike The Reef 2. Right from the start this film is filled with stuff that seems very unnecessary. We get it, you are trying to have character development, but for me, it was just like reading the food menu for the shark. When it came to the funding they read the quota list and ticked every box twice, let's mention global warming, rubbish in the ocean, make our lead characters lesbians, etc.. etc.. There is nothing wrong with making a film diverse, but when you are so blatant to the point that you are checking boxes it does have you on the side of the shark. Who is going to get killed first? It was like the Spice Girls on vacation. The acting was over the top, camera work was shaky. It was good to see the kills, I thought the whole bride friend sacrificing her own life was a bit ridiculous, they hadn't been at sea for days. It was like a case of The floating piece of ship from the Titanic and rose again. I am sure they could have somehow got the life vest around them both for support. Not the best shark movie, not the worst from the past few years. Far better than The Reef 2 and Requiem.
Chloe (2009)
Mesmerizing Thriller
I revisited this film last night as I remembered it fondly. It is about Catherine (Julianne Moore) who suspects her husband David (Liam Neeson) is cheating on her. She however can not find the proof and needs to prove it to herself to save her sanity. She does this by enlisting the services of Amanda Seyfried's character Chloe, a high class escort. Catherine pays her to try and seduce David and report back to her, so she can once and for all know if he is a cheater.
Seyfried is fantastic in this role as Chloe, at first you feel almost sorry for her, before her exterior starts to crack and her stalker side is revealed to the point of psycho. Both Neeson and Moore are also fantastic in this film. Credit given to Neeson as his performance was interrupted due to the death of his beautiful wife, but he returned to the set days later to finish.
Chloe is a classic erotic thriller, one you can rewatch and not tire of. Highly recommended.
Wicked Little Letters (2023)
I was a little disappointed.
When I heard about Wicked Little Letters, I was looking forward to seeing it, the storyline sounded exactly like my cup of tea and it being based on a true story made it appeal to me even more. Now firstly I have to say that Jessie Buckley and Oliva Coleman were both at their very best in this film, however, that failed to save it unfortunately. I feel that Wicked Little Letters fell flat and limped it's way to the conclusion that felt very long and drawn out. I was so disappointed, as I love British films, especially quirky ones this like. It really failed to hold my attention in parts and I think it needed to be wrapped up a lot quicker than what it was.
Imaginary (2024)
Not bad, but not good either.
I think what let the film Imaginary down the most was the acting. It was very flat, monotone and unexpressive - by all the actors. I think the concept was fine, I wasn't bored at any point during the film, I felt that the not so great acting could be overlooked by the storyline. Of course, Imaginary is the typical paint-by-numbers horror film that fits in the Blumhouse catalog perfectly. The jump scares are predictable, there was nothing scary about the film to me, nevertheless, I am sure some horror novices might find the film creepy. I love the whole imaginary friend concept and I think it is a great concept to play with in a horror film, if done correctly. Look, I don't regret watching this film, I have seen far worse this year - including Late Night With The Devil. I was never bored watching Imaginary. Sadly it will not make it as a horror classic, but it was worth watching.
