Rob Marshall's update on the classic mermaid myth will make Halle Bailey a movie star, but the rest of it treads water.
"There's a drag queen that lives in me," McCarthy said. "I'm always right on the verge of going full-time with her.”
"He was really looking to do something not in the musical genre, to really stretch himself," director Marshall said.
Marshall also shared that he sang "Mister Cellophane" during a meeting while pitching the film.
"It was very moving to me to see how important this kind of casting is for the world," Marshall said.
"There's an underbelly to Mary Poppins," said Blunt, who embraced the duality of the P.L. Travers character as she sang and danced and cried through Rob Marshall's musical sequel.
Emily Blunt is spectacular, but the dull "Mary Poppins Returns" is too high on nostalgia, and too low on imagination.
