LOCAL GUN SHOP OWNER TODAY. YEAH. EVAN, WHILE THOSE TWO CHILDREN WEREN’T SERIOUSLY INJURED IN THOSE ACCIDENTAL SHOOTINGS, H AND H GUN RANGE SAYS SAFES LIKE THESE CAN PREVENT THEM FROM HAPPENING. IT’S ALL ABOUT MAINTAINING CONTROL OF THAT FIREARM. IT’S HEARTBREAKING WHEN ANYBODY INNOCENT GETS HURT. BUT ESPECIALLY A FOUR YEAR OLD CHILD. TWICE THIS MONTH, CHILDREN IN OKC WERE ACCIDENTALLY SHOT AND SENT TO THE HOSPITAL. NOW, LOCAL GUN SHOP OWNER MIKE RUST IS SOUNDING THE ALARM ON GUN SAFETY. WE TRY TO MAKE SURE THAT EVERYBODY UNDERSTANDS THERE’S A RESPONSIBILITY THAT YOU HAVE AS A GUN OWNER TO SECURE YOUR FIREARMS, HE SAYS. WHETHER THAT’S WITH A LOCK BOX JUST DESIGNED FOR ONE SMALL HANDGUN, A VAULT OR A SAFE. IT’S SAFE PRACTICE TO KEEP ALL FIREARMS LOCKED UP AND AWAY FROM CHILDREN. THAT’S ALSO WHAT SOME LAWMAKERS ATTEMPTED LAST SESSION WITH BILLS THAT WOULD HAVE OFFERED TAX EXEMPTIONS FOR GUN SAFETY DEVICES FROM A STATE LEGISLATIVE PERSPECTIVE, THIS IS THIS IS OUR BEST IDEA. UM, MAKING SURE THAT WE’RE WORKING ON AN INCENTIVE, NOT A MANDATE. UM, SOMETHING TANGIBLE FISCAL, SOMETHING THAT A THAT A GUN OWNER CAN FEEL IN THEIR POCKETBOOK. UM, WHEN THEY DECIDE TO GO PURCHASE THAT GUN SAFE. BUT IT DIDN’T MAKE IT OUT OF THE CAPITOL BECAUSE IT DIDN’T MAKE IT PAST THE SENATE FLOOR. SENATOR DOSSETT AND OTHER LAWMAKERS SAY THEY’LL KEEP PUSHING FOR LEGISLATION NEXT SESSION. BUT IN THE MEANTIME, DO THE RIGHT THING, DO THE RESPONSIBLE THING. KEEP THAT GUN OUT OF PEOPLE’S HANDS WHO DON’T NEED TO HAVE IT IN THEIR HANDS. OBVIOUSLY SMALL CHILDREN, THEY CAN PLACE THEIR FIREARMS UP OUT OF REACH FROM CHILDREN CLOSET, SHELF, THAT KIND OF THING. WE REALLY RECOMMEND, HOWEVER, SOME TYPE OF SAFE DEVICE LIKE A FIREARM SAFE OR A SMALL LITTLE SIMPLE HANDGUN SAFE. WE’LL DO THAT. AND WITH THE MOST RECENT INCIDENT THAT CHILD IS EXPECTED TO BE OKAY. That’s also what some lawmakers attempted last session, with bills that would have offered tax exemptions for gun safety devices.

“From a legislative perspective this is the best idea. Making sure that we’re working on an incentive, not a mandate. Something tangible, fiscal, that a gun owner can feel in their pocketbook when they decide to purchase that gun safe,” said Sen. Jo Anna Dossett.

But the bills didn’t make it out of the Capitol, not make it past the Senate floor.

Dossett and other lawmakers say they’ll keep pushing for legislation in the next session.

“Do the right thing. Do the responsible thing, keep that gun out of the hands that don’t need to have it in their hands,” said Dossett.

“Obviously small children you can place their firearms out of reach from children, closet shelf, that kind of thing. We really recommend some kind of safe device like a firearm safe or a small little handgun safe will do that,” Rust said.

The child shot in the latest incident is hospitalized, but is expected to be okay,
