GATO MIKIO

Artisanal Woodwork & Lacquerware

Gato Mikio is a family woodworking house with over 100 years of history, founded by Komakichi Gato in 1908. They are based in Yamanaka, a heartland of arts and crafts, and one of Japan’s most renowned woodwork and lacquerware regions.

All Gato Mikio products are made from the finest timbers, including Cherry Birch and Japanese Zelkova Elm. Most of their products are hand sculpted from a single piece of wood.

Their products are meticulously carved by hand using traditional techniques that are centuries old. Their ‘Kashokubuki” wood curving technique that creates decorative patterns can only be achieved by specialised craftsmen from this area. They also incorporate lacquering techniques unique to the local region that maintain and highlight the beautiful woodgrain.

Their products are contemporary and elegant, and stand as pieces of art as much as they do functional tools and accessories. Their tea caddies have even received the German Design award in 2012. We are proud to offer a range of their products and hope you love them as much as we do.
