How can you ensure patient information is accurately shared during telemedicine?

In urban settings, selecting the correct platform that meets the standards is critical for telemedicine requirements. Unfortunately, for two reasons, the urban telemedicine technique does not function in rural areas. 1. The vast majority of them do not own a smartphone capable of telemedicine. 2. Due to a lack of awareness and understanding, people are unable to initiate a telemedicine call on their own, even if they have a smart phone. The best way to enable telemedicine in rural communities is through a triage model in which a local health worker equipped with a smart device or phone can connect a remote patient to a specialized doctor based on their availability. This eliminates the need to have a smart phone or the necessary skills .

I agree that following the SOAP format, as a checklist, that we learned back in medical school can be important to not miss performing a physical exam during telemedicine visits. For example, in my thyroid patients I conduct virtual "physical exams" by having patients swallow water with their neck clearly visible to see if there is any overtly visible gland enlargement or nodules, direct the camera to their eyes to look for evidence of lid lag or proptosis, hold their arms out to assess for tremors. I feel that because a visit is by telemedicine, a lot of providers feel that the physical exam is not helpful which does the patients a big disservice.

Personalized education is crucial in telemedicine to ensure that patients fully grasp the information being presented to them, contributing to better health outcomes. By tailoring the educational content to align with the patient’s age, cultural background, language, and health literacy level, healthcare providers can create a more inclusive and accessible learning experience. It is important to ensure that all educational materials and communications are not only clear and easy to understand but also directly relevant to the patient’s specific medical condition and personal situation. This approach promotes a more patient-centered experience.

Patient data accuracy can follow the same fundamental of data management practice as a mean to ensure data accuracy, such as proved way of accurate data collection, data entry rules out invalid inputs, a process and methodology for data validation and verification, safe and secured data storage, and data transformation through secured communication and channels. Different local market condition and infrastructural set up could determine how to manage each step to meet the local needs. In some case, leveraging the local educated skilled workforce along with technology assistance is necessary to ensure data accuracy.
