Team Alignment, Meet with them face to face or in group to share the vision, team planning and encourage them to improve their capability and focus for better shapes and results. Increase your present and visibility so they can feel updated with situation and condition as one team.

Teams with varied experience is a very common situation for every engineering leader. Here are few tips/tricks to bridge the gap: 1) Encourage open communication and create a safe space for questions. 2) Organize regular knowledge-sharing sessions (Internal). 3) Provide ongoing training (External/Online) and development opportunities for continuous learning and growth. 4) Use collaborative tools and platforms to facilitate teamwork. 4) Build a culture where every team member can share their opinion without fear (Openness). 6) Pair experienced members with less experienced ones for mentoring and skill sharing (Pair Programming). 7) Recognize and celebrate achievements to boost morale and motivation (Recognize & Reward).

Encourage working in pairs on tasks or pair programming, pairing less experienced team members with more experienced mentors for structured knowledge transfer & skill development. Hold regular check-ins to discuss progress, address challenges, and share insights, ensuring everyone has a chance to contribute. Provide regular, constructive feedback and encourage peer reviews to continuously improve team dynamics and performance. A supportive culture and recognition can go a long way in bringing the team together. These are few strategies I rely on, but not the only possibilities.

As an Engineering manager, know your team well to their strengths and what they do best. Two of my top 5 strengths that I use in this situation are: 1. Individualization - I'm always intrigued with each team member's uniqueness in skills and ability. And I intuitively figure out how different they can work together in the team productively, and that's our 1-on-1 sessions topic. 2. Connectedness - With the ability to envision how everyone and everything is connected, I strive to help every team member acknowledge how they contribute to the bigger picture of the team's and the business goals. When all know that their skill level is acknowledged and accepted as key contributor in achieving the team's goal, you have a winning team.

the ultimate goal is to build a team where everyone feels valued, contributions are recognized, and there is a strong sense of camaraderie. This not only leads to a positive work environment but also drives the team towards achieving their objectives. By assigning tasks based on individual’s expertise and interest to ensures efficiency and keeps team members engaged and motivated. Pair less experienced team members with those who are more experienced to transfer knowledge and Skills. Celebrate the achievement of milestones and appreciate the efforts of team members to boost morale and foster a positive work environment. Pay attention that Objectives Should be SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound).

This is critical- as it will set a clear cut of the expectations from the team members with timeline and Performance measurements tools.

Team has to have regular meetings to understand one another’s concern regarding technical discrepancies while developing a project involves everyone’s expertise without inconsistencies. Though each and every member of the team shall be aware of the final product or deliverable due to focus on further communication among team.

I think to bridge the gap in expertise, setting clear objectives is essential. Establish specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound objectives to address these gaps. Break down the objectives into smaller, manageable milestones to track progress effectively. Promote a culture of continuous improvement and learning within the organization. Regularly assess progress towards the objectives and adjust the approach as needed. Along with these Provide Mentorship and Allocate Resources to support the team. By doing so we can mend the gap in expertise

1 way which I have tried is to schedule sharing sessions which allow the better team members to share their knowledge / lesson learnt with the rest. During the session, I will start the ball rolling to ask questions and slowly encourage others to participate in the Q&A. Material will be uploading to team share point for the audience after the session as well.

Implement mentor or buddy systems for hands-on learning & collaboration. Organize cross-functional projects that require diverse skill sets, ensuring everyone can contribute & learn. Establish clear communication channels & open dialogue, making it easy for team members to seek help & share insights. Leverage collaborative tools & platforms, and invest in training programs tailored to your team. Recognize & celebrate all contributions to build confidence & belonging. This bridges the expertise gap & fosters a stronger, more innovative team.

Each member of our group has learned something from another - there is absolutely no doubt. Some have great design skills, some great organizational/documentation skills, some have great understanding of instrument properties/calibration, and some are better at communications than others. Some are great at electrical and electronic skills, some at fit and finish, some at print reading, some at plumbing, etc. Each one has lent their particular skill to another at some point, and taken the time to teach it to their co-member. This type of information sharing has been encouraged by our management in the past, and has made our group stronger.

Provide access to necessary software and tools and relevant Training to ensures that all team have the resources they need to contribute effectively. also expert publications, which can serve as a valuable resource for learning and staying updated. Leveraging these tools, learning environment that caters to different levels of expertise will be created, promotes continuous learning, and fosters collaboration.

Typical tools we would use are sharepoints, box drives, teams, and OneNote. The key is to get the whole team connected and contributing to find better solutions. Use of OneNote allows everyone to help contribute and to find answers to common questions faster. Works really well with 3/4/3 shifts working 12hr each.

Every tool that is truly needed, and used by a team, only improves it's effectiveness and efficiency. There are times when such tools have been provided, after a long period of trying to "make do" and we've wondered how it was that we'd gotten along, or gotten anything done for so long. In truth, not only was the addition of a tool/skill something that made the job easier/more efficient, it was something that made the outcomes better, and improved whatever the end product may have been.

One very important aspect as a leader (which I struggled with, at first!) is to be able to actively listen to others’ ideas, even if you know they may be wrong. By allowing everyone to share their opinion and feel “safe” in doing so, you make a significant impact on the team’s morale and inclusion. When team members feel heard, they are more likely to share their opinions freely, fostering an environment of open communication and trust. This sense of psychological safety encourages inclusion, creativity and innovation, as team members are not afraid to propose unconventional ideas or solutions. It also promotes a culture of continuous improvement, where feedback is valued and used constructively.

Often, when people are given a chance to shine, you may find that indeed they do. People are learning creatures, and need to feel like their contributions matter. Fostering this atmosphere, will grow people into contributing members who may not only succeed, but excel! Be honest. If you're a leader, stand up and be an adult about it! Concerns about possible shortcomings with people, should be communicated clearly. Let them know that you want them to grow. Let them know that you'll be observing, and that you're giving them a chance to be a part of the group, to be included as an equal, and if they can't/don't/won't grow, then you'll have to find another place for them. Be a coach. Take the chance at being pleasantly surprised.

It is desired state of an engineering team that its made of different levels of expertise. If you have a team of all juniors, you will not do great. Likewise if everyone is senior. You challenge senior engineers by encouraging them to be more productive through others, and you challenge the juniors by setting them up to be mentored by the senior ones. That's in my opinion the desired state.

One way that worked for me was to ask in a meeting involving the whole team, to every team member to share with the group their best experiences and results in their particular areas of expertise, this will enrich the knowledge of the team in other areas as well as create an atmosphere of trust on one each other and in the hole group in general
