About us
Alachua Conservation Trust (ACT) is an accredited land trust that has been to protecting the natural, historic, scenic and recreational resources in and around North Central Florida since 1988. ACT protects land through purchase, donation, and conservation easements primarily in 22 counties. For 36 years, ACT has been instrumental to facilitating the conservation of over 59,500 acres of Florida land. This includes the direct purchase and protection of over 26,500 acres. We own and manage over 5,000 acres, and collaborate with private landowners to protect an additional 6,850 acres through conservation easements. ACT currently work across 22 counties in North Central Florida, including Alachua, Marion, Gilchrist, Putnam, Levy, Columbia, Madison, Hamilton, Union, Bradford, Clay, Suwannee, Lafayette, Dixie, Taylor, Sumter, Lake, Volusia, Citrus, Hernando, Pasco, & Seminole County. We serve our community and home by protecting and preserving natural spaces, creating opportunities to interact with the environment, and teaching the next generation through environmental education programs. ACT saves land by purchasing it or receiving it as a donation. We also work with private landowners interested in conserving their land to find the right conservation solutions for their land. In 2013, ACT received the National Land Trust Excellence Award, the highest award a land trust can receive. ACT is a 501(c)3 non-profit charity and receives no government grants for general operating support. We rely on contributions from private individuals, corporations, small businesses, and foundations. ACT is the recipient of regional, state, & national recognition: 2013 National Land Trust Excellence Award presented by the Land Trust Alliance 2017 Wes Skiles Water Stewardship Award presented by the Rotary Club of Downtown Gainesville 2019 Conservation Organization of the Year presented by the Florida Wildlife Federation 2021 Gainesville Legacy Awards - Nonprofit Recognition Award

1,449 acres of longleaf sandhill habitat near the Bell Ridge Longleaf Wildlife and Environmental Area and within the Devil's Ear Springshed are now protected! ACT worked with the landowners of Canaan Ranch and the Rural and Family Lands Protection Program to place a Conservation Easement on the property. The property not only serves as a high recharge area for North Florida's springs, it is also habitat for uplands species including gopher tortoises and red-cockaded woodpeckers. This property has been a focus for conservation for ACT and the State of Florida for many years. 263 acres containing tributaries to Orange Lake are now protected as conservation land by Alachua Conservation Trust. ACT purchased the River Styx property from the Richardson and Waldorff families with support from the River Branch Foundation. The property, which is part of the shoreline and marshland located along Orange Lake in the southern reaches of Alachua County, is part of a larger system of protected wetlands known as the Lochloosa Wildlife Corridor Project.
